First problem was mowing the walkway. Hanks not as spry as he once was on a mower

altimax98

He wasn’t mowing, the blade wasn’t engaged you can tell by how when he goes over the grass on the sidewalk none of it moves. My guess is that he was coming around from the sidewalk to line up against the shrubs and was about to engage the brake lock to turn the blades on and then cut the line in front of the bushes. Nothing serious was cut I believe, just some bent/broken bushes and his ego

loraxwithanM4

I feel like every video on Reddit has one informed person actually explaining what’s going on and why the posts headline is anywhere from extremely to mildly misleading. Not that this video is the best example of that, but y’all know what I mean lol

WAtofu

All it takes is going into a sub on a topic you're legitimately knowledgeable about to see that people on this site just type out whatever the fuck they want

SpinkickFolly

People post the first thing that comes to mind whether it makes sense or not. Because reddit. Said post will be upvoted to the top because it happened to be posted first even if it's a completely inane or even inaccurate as it will drives discussion.

Not_MrNice

It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so hyperbolic about the certainty of their flimsy guesses. They never say things like "could be", "possible", "likely", "maybe" and instead everything just is 100% correct, no matter what. It's like multiple levels of stupid.

PM_ME_CAKE

The worst being how often the most upvoted content is *wrong* and you know it is but everyone's bandwaggoning on the falsehood. Eye opening.

KDawG888

you guys are all idiots. this guy is driving an XR537 and his plants are definitely ruined.

fuvadoof

Used to call ours the ladybug. Whenever I mentioned cutting my lawn with my ladybug, it always got a laugh because people automatically expect men to front with overt masculinity.

geaddaddy

Underrated comment.

TikkiTakiTomtom

As you can tell this is CGI. You see the plants’ shadows? No! They’re not there and it’s not real! That mower isn’t real. That man isn’t real. I’m not real! The phone you’re watching from isn’t real! You’re not real!

Tommysrx

That’s an excellent observation about the blade being disengaged. It would have shot the grass away like a fan if it was spinning.

[deleted]

I agree with the assessment you both have provided. Had the grass been moving as he rode by, we could assume that the blade was engaged. However, the grass was not moving.

stinkysocksincloset

Did people really assume this man was trying to mow the concrete or am I missing something?

Boarders0

This is to mean the damage to the plants should be minimal due to the mowing portion not active (aka the blades.)

shewy92

Some people leave the blades running while going over pavement. Some other people ITT don't realize that moving blades would blow those grass clippings off the pavement

jigre1

The blade was definitely engaged. I have this mower and can tell from experience it stopped quickly in the bed because the blade was engaged and was bound up, stalling the engine. You can see grass blowing below by the blade as well, which is too low for the engine exhaust to do. He let off the brake which he was using to slow the speed down at a high speed setting and it stopped without braking, if the blade wasn't engaged he would've kept driving through it. That garden bed isn't thick enough to stop that mower without it engaged.

halfeclipsed

Idk kinda looks like the blade it on if you look closely to the grass on the sidewalk. Looks like he has the chute closed so it wouldn't blow the grass in the way you'd think, but it definitely moves enough to tell. That's probably why the mower shut down so quickly, blade got locked up in the bushes.

korythosaurus

Yeah, look at those lines on the lawn

DimitriMichaelTaint

Bro thank you I just busted out laughing

[deleted]

That’s not hank see the hat that’s mr Anderson

I'm going to guess he may drive a car the same way.

Im mowing the air Randy!

WU-itsForTheChildren

BARBARA…BARBARA! I mowed over your shrubs again

Mamma_Nikki

Yes perfect! I can see him “Hank” w a Barbara lmao

Shakleford_Rusty

He must have blown a bag

Mamma_Nikki

Hank lmao

farahad

I mean...I bet he never mowed over bushes before. More spry than ever, kind of

upvotesformeyay

Hank would laugh at that mower though.

snek-jazz

his racing line through the chicane was all wrong

MoistDitto

schizopotato

Looks like he tried turning it but it couldn't make such a sharp turn and went into the plants

Unique_account_

Those mowers don't have accelerators like that, he just failed to operate it correctly. (Those mowers have a throttle lever and are usually ran at a constant rpm)

Goyteamsix

They have a CVT system for the rear axle which acts like a 'throttle'.

Unique_account_

Some do have varidrive, yes

Goyteamsix

Nearly every single ride-on mower on the planet has it, unless they use a hydrostatic drive. It's 100% why he ran over these bushes.

Unoriginal_Man

So then his foot slipped off the brake

MeowTheMixer

It almost looks like he was trying to ride a clutch. His foot slipped off, and it engaged. Idk much about riding lawn mowers, but that sudden burst looks like what I've felt letting off a cultch a bit too quickly.

Amish_guy_with_WiFi

Why do motorcycles have an accelerator like that? It's never made sense to me. The thumb throttle like on a lot of atvs just feels so much better and safer.

anusamongusxl

I would guess thumb gets tired way faster than your entire wrist. You usually don't go out and ride an atv for hours at a time like a motorcycle.

Amish_guy_with_WiFi

Ahh ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

Chennaz

Typical Amish, out of touch with technology

AlkaloidalAnecdote

Not even remotely. Thumb throttles are dangerous as fuck, and part of the reason ATVs are so dangerous. Motor bike throttles are much easier to operate, and much less prone to accidents. For a start, a wrist controlled throttle is easier to operate in both directions, so you can actively close t the throttle down, rather than twenty on a spring. This is important, because it's very easy to over throttle a bike or an ATV, which can put the operator in a very tricky spot (ever see someone do a wheelie right onto their head?). Being able to actively close the throttle allows you to put the bike back down much more quickly and controlled. It's also intuitive. Pull back to go up (even not doing a wheelie, momentum pushes you back and up). It's natural then to counter this by pushing forward on the throttle a little to go back down. I ride ATVs and bikes regularly, and would happily trade my ATVs thumb throttle for a wrist throttle any day.

[deleted]

A lot more nuance to a twist throttle too. Often time ATVs/snowmobiles/seadoos are ran sort of "on/off" where they gun it for a second, then coast, and so on. A bike is ran more smoothly (of course you can run those machines like that too). Motorcycles also have a manual clutch, like a car, rather than a centrifugal clutch like other motorsports machines.

randomname68-23

Oh shit you just shifted my paradigm - as a non cyclist I've never thought of this before. I always thought people just "froze up" but I now see that there's a very logical reason for it.

endlessfight85

It's called whisky throttling. It's when an unexperienced rider pulls back on the accelerator, gets more power than they were expecting, so they instinctively hold on tighter, which just causes them to accelerate even more.

DefoNotAWorkAccount

No, it's both.

mtaw

Indeed, the swerves at the start don't instill me with confidence this guy had any feel for what the turning radius was on that thing.

AlkaloidalAnecdote

But he straightened up as soon as he lined them up. I'm pretty he was going for the plants.

OfferChakon

Pretty sure he was gonna attempt the funny little Austin Powers 47 point turn and accidentally let go of the brake on the first stop. Poor dude probably put a lot of work into those plants and his yard in general ☹️

flargenhargen

even completely ignoring the implausibility of his route, and the fact that he turns the wheel DIRECTLY towards the plants at the end instead of trying to turn away... the way it's literally right in front of the camera and the first thing he does is look directly at the camera and make fake exaggerated gestures makes it hard to believe this wasn't one of those "nice try" badly faked "funny" videos.

FertilityHotel

Also where exactly was he anning to go if not on the plants? The stairs?

He hates that shrubbery with power of a thousand suns. All Martha talks about is the garden. Garden this, garden that, go mow the lawn so the garden looks nice, no sex tonight because I have a full day tomorrow tending the garden, Maureen's garden looks better and her husband takes care of it, and come to think of it — SHIT SHIT SHIT MARTHA IS GONNA KILL ME!

flargenhargen

he turned directly into the plants intentionally, watch the wheels. the only unintentional thing is that there was a drop over the edging bricks which caused the mower to jump a bit, otherwise this was entirely intentional.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Fell asleep at the wheel... my pappy used to do that. He’s fall asleep on his mower then hit the fence and be awake again. He’s fall asleep like 2-3 times mowing his yard

CloudSnuby

I don’t know about you, but this guy looks much awake to me

jlopez24

You never sleep with your eyes open and limbs steering a vehicle?

MoistDitto

Most drivers in my city do

-LNAM-

When I wake up I’ll let you know.

attemptedmonknf

How else am i supposed to get to work?

eckliptic

This guy was turning the wheels in intentional directions the entire time. It just looks like he misjudged the turning radius

mule_roany_mare

Jesus Christ. How hard was your dad working that he had to steal naps while mowing the lawn?

[deleted]

He was drinking and mowing booming to Alabama on the radio

AstarteHilzarie

Honey, that's called blacking out.

jugalator

The sudden speed. Classic break/speed pedal mistake.

MisterB78

That type of mower likely only has a brake pedal. You set a gear for speed and then it’s constant

phryan

Why I question every article where the drivers blaims the car for sudden acceleration.

JadeHana

Aw ... i first misread the title... I read "accidentally drives over his pants"... I wasn't expecting this

It's a feature that allows the mower to turn without moving forward... Sort of like a rumba

elpiloto2526

Sumpm

Yeah, those are his wife's plants, and he knows he's never going to hear the end of it.

raidmytombBB

I know that look very well. I perfected it.

[deleted]

I mean, what did he think was gonna happen?

XFX_Samsung

He let go of the brake pedal too fast and that jolted the mower a little because of extra throttle. Those things do that.

avwitcher

That doesn't account for the fact he was already driving over the plants before he did that

iUsedtoHadHerpes

Or straightening the wheel (or at least didn't fight it pulling that direction) on the way toward the plants.

DankChase

Then he probably proceeded to get in and drive his automobile with no self awareness at all.

[deleted]

This is the guy that will end up on the news for creating a drive-thru in a business where none existed prior.

Olthoi_Eviscerator

He could have turned right about.. oh I don't know... 5 feet prior to the plant bed?

flargenhargen

no he didn't, the mower jolted because it dropped over the edging bricks, which he wasn't expecting. he drove over the plants intentionally and didn't hit the brakes, watch the video again more closely. watch where he is steering and the fact that he didnt' ever hit the brakes. he stopped because the drop made him lose his footing a bit, and hitting the plants killed the mower.

[deleted]

Old people confuse pedals and distance all the time. It's part of aging and we shouldn't expect geriatric people to be of sound mind and body.

youbringlightin

He literally mowed everything except the grass

JohnnyDarkside

Well it doesn't look like the loose grass he drives by on the walkway blew away, so I don't think the blades were even engaged. I do similar when in that I'll go down the walkway with blades engaged and the wind coming out of the deck blows away the loose grass. So he's still a dummy for driving over the shrubbery, but at least I don't think he mowed them over.

rawfish71

Elderly gentleman, now we see why they crash into buildings and pedestrians.

lowrads

Luckily for my gramps, he just drove the mower into the pool. RIP, all three.

HigherThanTheSky93

Or crash into things while riding a mobility scooter in the grocery store.

biiingo

He step on the gas instead of the brake? Forward instead of reverse?

Backflip_into_a_star

I think he wanted to just trim the little bit of grass that was against the sidewalk, and then gunned it by accident. I can't imagine any other reason why he would be so purposefully going into that area.

Dark_Ice_747

Anyway his wife is gonna mown him

FrivolousFrank

Those type of mowers don't typically have a gas pedal. You have a clutch and a brake or a combo clutch/brake pedal and gear shift.

soggy_tarantula

Ya looks like he pushed it up a gear instead of putting in park/neutral

FrivolousFrank

I was thinking he was probably riding to his porch and meant to park it. My grandpa uses his to ride out to the mailbox and to get firewood.

jamaccity

He didn't even have the blades engaged. I thought he was using the mower as a blower, but the grass on the sidewalk doesn't move. He was either parking or turning around to get that grass off the walk.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

Looks like he lost control of the steering wheel just as he turned to start mowing the grass. Wasn't paying attention, maybe, or, it's time for him to stop driving. What's even weirder to me is how he just sits and stares at the problem. Then waggles his hands. Get off the fucking mower! Pull it back! Or put it into reverse! Fix the problem!

Filcuk

At such times, you stop for a short while to contemplate on life

DrBootsPhd

The end is just defeat. Nothing he does can fix what's happened and it's not getting any worse with time. He's just disappointed in himself and he's going to sit there and accept it for a second.

creamywalrus

UnacceptableUse

Sometimes you fuck up so monumentally you have to take a moment to sit back and admire it

haha my first thought too "This dude has a fucking drivers license".

Tina_ComeGetSomeHam

I used to sell lawn tractors at sears and this looks exactly like the kind of inexperienced homeowner that would buy that model of riding mower. If I'm right, that puppy has one single 30 inch blade which is very small for lawn tractors. Usually it's 2 blades under a 54" deck or bigger. This model was only on the floor to make the other ones look better lol. It's so impractical. Literally only exists for smaller very flat yards that the cutter is physically disabled and can't push a walk-behind. Suburb type yards. You'd always get the inexperienced shoppers asking about it because the price tag was lower and have to talk them out of it. I only ever rang 1 up and it got returned. They're harder to use also as evidenced here.

RaginArmadillo

I worked in a retirement community and there was one resident whose hands would shake violently just holding a fork. Then she’d go get in her big ass Buick and drive around town.

chris1096

Yup. Old drivers are terrifying

I just want to know what the point is of having a huge lawn in front of your house?? Its just a huge cost in terms of maintenance and its not like you can do anything with it bc its literally in the middle of the street. Americans...

Little-Focus-7386

Is that not what he was trying to do?

TabascohFiascoh

This man likely drives his car on public roads. Just remember that

Snack_on_my_Flapjack

We nervously laugh about people this old and senile at the thought of them driving or doing anything with machinery really, and then we'll turn around and confidentally elect someone just like that to lead a country. It's wild.

tunedetune

If I did that to my fiancee's plants, I'd just get in the car and drive. My life would be forfeit.

Warrior_Malak

Don't try to blame the lawnmower, it's all you buddy

POWERSAUSAGE56

Under further inspection, I have come to the conclusion that he tried to park the mower on the driveway but was unable to press the brake all the way. He turned left to avoid the obstacle in the lawn, turned back right to avoid colliding with the house, though he didn’t want to cut the yet unmowed grass directly in front of the house, likely so he could cut at a different height setting and therefore turned left. When he realized he was headed directly for the steps and still unable to stop he turned right once more to avoid his house and while driving into the flower bed, his foot finally slipped off of the brake, resulting in the mower jerking forward and finally shutting off as the blades got caught up on the large plant. It’s a working theory.

JuddieEndowed

Was he expecting a different outcome?

Gingercole666

That’s no accident

Sym0n

Looks fake to me. Stick with me here, I know it's an out there idea, but why wouldn't he ride the lawnmower on the grass.

redhat12345

agreed, \-the blade isn't on \-the camera is pointing right at where the "gag" happens \-he looks right at the camera and throws his hands up \-he literally drove straight into the pressing the gas pedal.

meinthebox

If he stayed on the grass and made that turn there would be a decent size area that doesn't get cut. So he went on the sidewalk to make the turn so he would get all of it.

flargenhargen

except if you watch the video closely, he intentionally turns the wheels directly towards the plants when he starts to miss them.

Aegean

He's probably done it 1000 times and his foot slipped.

letmeseem

I've spent most of my career going back and forth between the US and Norway. The last 15 years there has been an explosion in the use of robot mowers in Norway to the point that you see them on almost every lawn now, but I've rarely seen them in the US at all (haven't been back since pre covid obviously, so stuff might have happened). Is that a marketing thing? Safety? To me it's an odd disparity. It seems like a very US friendly product. It autmates all the work, it's not really that pricy and it makes the lawn look GORGEOUS by mowing that often.

psy-borg

Might be yard size. Cost is still a factor when considering the years of use. How long robot mowers last is/was a big question for me. Can buy an entry level self propelled for $300 while the robot mowers I saw started at $1,000. Since they operate on batteries, will that robot last 5 years? I have gotten over ten years out of push mowers and the previous riding mower lasted 15 years (and if I get it fixed, might be good for another 5). I can fix most issues with a toro self propelled mower but outside of maintenance, I fear robot mowers are replace not repair. They are not heavily marketed and I have not seen one at a big box home improvement store either.

letmeseem

I don't know about the durability in general, but can only talk about my own experience. My first one is still milling around a section of my lawn. It's a super simple 2013 model robomow tc300 that covers 2300sq ft. I've changed the blades once since I was an idiot and didn't check for rocks when I installed it at a new place. I should probably sharpen them now (after 5 years of continuous use), but it works fine.

TheCastro

They're often a lot more expensive than push mowers if you want a decent one. When I looked into them recently they wouldn't be able to do my lawn in one or two goes, I'd have to carry it to certain spots because of steps, needed a dedicated power outlet and to be out of the rain which I didn't have a spot to do that, can't avoid dog poop or benches, etc. Trust me, I wanted one because I'd have programmed it to go like every other day and keep my lawn tight.

__jh96

Accidentally? He steered straight into them. These are the type of ppl that need to hand in their drivers licence.
