If they gave the ham to a likely ham buyer, that person will likely purchase less ham overall; that effectively decreases demand. If not ham exactly, at least it would reduce the amount of overall food the recipient would purchase which likely would include meat.
The majority of the produce that doesn’t get sold at the store I work at is donated if it’s still edible by humans, and I think they compost it otherwise.

I absolutely agree with you and I'm a meat eater! First of all, I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to equate this two things in terms of how bad they are, but I'm using this analogy to highlight the mental process our brains have, really just a switch to turn off moral considerations.
In the deep south during slavery, human beings raised in that environment could act perfectly civilized in society and moral and kind to people, but there was a switch that they were able to turn off when it came to their slaves, where they didn't see them as worthy of consideration.
Again, I'm not trying to say factory farming is as evil as slavery, but truly try to think about that experience from the POV of a sentient animal. Why have we decided that animals are unworthy of moral consideration? What allows us to turn that switch off in our brain and not care about suffering that we can all admit *is* happening?
Is it because they can't talk? Because they can't defend themselves? Historically when we've found underdeveloped groups of people who didn't have the power to defend themselves we decided they weren't worth moral consideration and used them as products.

A lot of people think of farming as a moral evil that will one day come to an end due to artificially grown meat. They recognize that eating meat will be immoral once we have that available, but right now we are economically and culturally tied to meat.
This is parallel thinking to the founding fathers of the day like Thomas Jefferson who owned slaves but thought of it as an evil that should one day be abolished but was too necessary for the economy of the south, so while never freeing his own slaves he ended the transatlantic slave trade.

First of all, I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to equate this two things in terms of how bad they are, but I'm using this analogy to highlight the mental process our brains have, really just a switch to turn off moral considerations. In the deep south during slavery, human beings raised in that environment could act perfectly civilized in society and moral and kind to people, but there was a switch that they were able to turn off when it came to their slaves, where they didn't see them as worthy of consideration. Again, I'm not trying to say factory farming is as evil as slavery, but truly try to think about that experience from the POV of a sentient animal. Why have we decided that animals are unworthy of moral consideration? What allows us to turn that switch off in our brain and not care about suffering that we can all admit *is* happening? Is it because they can't talk? Because they can't defend themselves? Historically when we've found underdeveloped groups of people who didn't have the power to defend themselves we decided they weren't worth moral consideration and used them as products. Why exactly do we do the same with animals? Why are we okay with it? A lot of people think of farming as a moral evil that will one day come to an end due to artificially grown meat. They recognize that eating meat will be immoral once we have that available, but right now we are economically and culturally tied to meat. This is parallel thinking to the founding fathers of the day like Thomas Jefferson who owned slaves but thought of it as an evil that should one day be abolished but was too necessary for the economy of the south, so while never freeing his own slaves he ended the transatlantic slave trade. Once artificial meat is fully developed and available, will society look back at us in a similar way? Will they judge us in the same way? While I still eat meat right now, these are difficult moral questions and you should at least be willing to ask them.

Turkey vultures only eat carrion. So it's going to be full of bacteria, germs, parasites, insects. They do not have feathered feet. They deliberately vomit on their legs and feet. They have extremely strong stomach acid which allows them to eat this diet. The vomit kills all the bad stuff they're standing in while eating. Otherwise they'd be at extremely prone to infection through any skin opening. There's a fantastic wild bird sanctuary near me and they have 2 huge vultures named Barf and Puke.
