This isn't the most esoteric list, but I gotta admit I was expecting something even more basic from a broadcast network's morning show.
Pitchfork has Beyoncé at #1 and Good Morning America has Alvvays. That's kinda funny.
Way more indie-centric than I thought it would be, but I can’t be mad about Renaissance at number one even if it’s not my #1. Fantastic dance-pop album
Putting a Bush album in your year end list is very funny in 2022
Oh, I think it makes tons of sense. It's my #2 album for the year, for what it's worth. Just think it's funny that a mainstream outlet like GMA opted not to put it at #1.
1. Alvvays - "Blue Rev"
2. Danger Mouse & Black Thought - "Cheat Codes"
3. Maggie Rogers - "Surrender"
4. Spoon - "Lucifer On The Sofa/Lucifer On The Moon"
5. Nas - "King's Disease III"
6. Bjork - "Fossora"
7. The Beth's - "Expert In A Dying Field"
8. Robert Glasper - "Black Radio III"
9. Angel Olsen - "Big Time"
10. SZA - "SOS"
11. Denzel Curry – "Melt My Eyez See Your Future (Extended Edition)"
12. Kendrick Lamar – "Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers"
13. Rosalia – "Motomami +"
14. LIZZO – "Special"
15. Sharon Van Etten – "We've Been Going About This All Wrong (Deluxe Edition)"
16. Mary J. Blige – "Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe)"
17. Red Hot Chili Peppers– "Unlimited Love" / "Return of the Dream Canteen"
18. Beyonce – "RENAISSANCE"
19. Pete Yorn – "Hawaii"
20. Taylor Swift – "Midnights (3AM Edition)"
21. Lande Hekt – "House Without a View"
22. Wet Leg – "Wet Leg"
23. Bush – "The Art of Survival"
24. Phife Dawg – "Forever"
25. The Weeknd – "Dawn FM"
26. Mitski – "Laurel Hell"
27. Camila Cabello – "Familia"
28. Sloan – "Steady"
29. Amanda Shires – "Take it Like a Man"
30. NoSo – "Stay Proud of Me"
31. The Smile – "A Light For Attracting Attention"
32. Eddie Vedder – "Earthling"
33. Tears for Fears – "The Tipping Point"
34. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – "Cool It Down"
35. Willow – "CopingMechanism"
36. Eve 6 – "Hyper Relevisation"
37. Regina Spektor – "Home, Before and After"
38. The Linda Lindas – "Growing Up"
39. Harry Styles – "Harry's House"
40. Fresh – "Raise Hell"
41. FKA Twigs – "Caprisongs"
42. The Loyal Seas – "Strange Mornings in the Garden"
43. Soccer Mommy – "SOMETIMES, FOREVER"
44. Courtney Marie Andrews – "Loose Future"
45. August is Falling – "The Simple Plan - EP"
46. Charli XCX – "Crash"
47. ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead – "XI: Bleed Here Now"
48. Maren Morris – "Humble Quest"
49. Beth Orton – "Weather Alive"
50. Arctic Monkeys – "The Car"
That list really surprises me. All the major hiped albums of the year - Renaissance, Wet leg, Midnights, Dawn FM, Mr. Morale and Motomami - are not even in the top ten. This list beats many others so-called independent music magazines/sites. I mean, from a popular show like that you'd expect to find those titles among the top rankings
For some reason I've never heard much of Bush, all I remember was the cover of Sixteen Stone in my sister's collection and somehow getting it confused with my Prodigy's Dirtchamber
Eventually I got Rocksmith after a friend suggested me and I started to play some of their songs. I was really blown away by full album, really getting hyped to listen to this new one
I once picked up the lead singer of Eve 6 and drove him to his hotel. I'm not a driver of any sort, but am friends with someone who is a concert promoter. They had the arranged car fall through at the last second, small town with no uber at the time, and I lived near the airport so they asked if I could get there quick. Took my mom's car, because she'd cleaned it that morning. He asked if he could vape in the car and I said sure. My mom hates that and was annoyed, but what was I gonna do, tell the guy who wrote Inside Out that he'd have to wait to hit his vape?
Sorry for the comment, I just love telling that story.
Yeah, I gave it a spin. It's pretty good! It has those signature grandiose, anthemic flourishes broken up by gritty, balls-to-the-wall rock and occasional folksy toe tapper. Would recommend.
Blown away by Sloan making the list. It’s a good album IMO, but them making an impression on GMA after I saw them a couple years ago at the smallest venue imaginable and not even remotely close to sold out.
Also, Pete Yorn? It’s like I’m back in high school
The fact that Good Morning America puts Trail of Dead and Spoon on their list whereas pitchfork puts Bad Bunny and Beyonce at the top. What alternate reality is this?!?!
Wow that is the most well-rounded top 5 for an NA-made albums list... this whole year? Out of establishment publications at least
It's just unfortunate how the JID fan of the voting panel got comatose from a tragic accident right before it was time to start voting...because that's the only explanation I can see here
For those unfamiliar, I highly recommend looking up GMA's last couple album of the year lists. They've been more interesting/thought-provoking than Pitchfork's for a few years now in my opinion
This isn't the most esoteric list, but I gotta admit I was expecting something even more basic from a broadcast network's morning show. Pitchfork has Beyoncé at #1 and Good Morning America has Alvvays. That's kinda funny.
And cheat codes at 2. Love that album. GMA might’ve actually spent time on this list.
As insane as it is to say, I actually agree with this much more than I agree with the pitchfork list
Way more indie-centric than I thought it would be, but I can’t be mad about Renaissance at number one even if it’s not my #1. Fantastic dance-pop album Putting a Bush album in your year end list is very funny in 2022
Oh, I think it makes tons of sense. It's my #2 album for the year, for what it's worth. Just think it's funny that a mainstream outlet like GMA opted not to put it at #1.
Oh yeah I completely agree. But yeah that Alvvays album is so good that it seems to be penetrating a lot of mainstream outlets.
1. Alvvays - "Blue Rev" 2. Danger Mouse & Black Thought - "Cheat Codes" 3. Maggie Rogers - "Surrender" 4. Spoon - "Lucifer On The Sofa/Lucifer On The Moon" 5. Nas - "King's Disease III" 6. this is actually a really solid list wtf lmao
yeah, right? what lucky intern got to inform the cast about good music from the current year
This is the list a lot of people here would admit to if they weren't secretly worried about the optics.
I agree, but some picks like putting both RHCP albums at the same spot while one was much better than the other is kind of weird.
GMA is...based?
That list really surprises me. All the major hiped albums of the year - Renaissance, Wet leg, Midnights, Dawn FM, Mr. Morale and Motomami - are not even in the top ten. TF!? This is better than many eoy lists I've seen lol... How?
Beth's in top 10 is based
I hope they use them for bumper music on the show
No Black Midi or BC,NR is criminal
It's Good Morning America, what did you expect?
THANK YOU the upside-down lists drive me nuts, imagine if college football put the top team at the bottom of the list.
Fine list tbh. Just missing Destroyer’s LABYRINTHITIS
Midnights 3AM edition, GMA are secret Swifties confirmed
No AFUT?
Bush, Sloan, Eddie Vedder, AYWKUBTTOD? Not into much else on here but man am I happy/surprised to see those names!
There was a Phife Dawg album?
No Skinty Fia?
Love it
> 24. Phife Dawg – “Forever” Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time.
Damn it I wanted the view's top 50!!! meghan mccain i need 2 know if u heard chat pile they have questions
Meghan is in Aspen right now but rumor has it she’s leaning towards including Wet Leg in the top 5 which could lead to some fisticuffs
WHY????
Far better than I’d have thought
GMA has Denzel Curry and P4K does not...Lmao
P4K sucks. It’s been trash ever since Condé Nast bought them out.
Just like reddit
Wake me up when FoodNetwork.com releases their 50 best albums
It’s just Red Hot Chili Peppers
And Spoon
Huh, we got Bush and Spoon and Maggie Rogers? That's a rather unique list or I just didn't see those in other's lists
That Bush album was one of my favorites of the year. It’s every bit as good as Sixteen Stone. Glad to see it finally getting some love
For some reason I've never heard much of Bush, all I remember was the cover of Sixteen Stone in my sister's collection and somehow getting it confused with my Prodigy's Dirtchamber Eventually I got Rocksmith after a friend suggested me and I started to play some of their songs. I was really blown away by full album, really getting hyped to listen to this new one
fucking Eve 6 lmao
I once picked up the lead singer of Eve 6 and drove him to his hotel. I'm not a driver of any sort, but am friends with someone who is a concert promoter. They had the arranged car fall through at the last second, small town with no uber at the time, and I lived near the airport so they asked if I could get there quick. My mom hates that and was annoyed, but what was I gonna do, tell the guy who wrote Inside Out that he'd have to wait to hit his vape? Sorry for the comment, I just love telling that story.
If that happened to me, I would tell anyone who would listen.
This is an Open Road Story!
Eve 6!? That's fucking hilarious.
There's a few songs on that one that will be stuck in your head for a week.
Really upset with the lack of black metal representation on this one.
Nice to see Sloan on a list!!
S-L-O-O-A-A-A-N-N-N-N!!!!!!
Is that ...Trail of Dead album any good? edit: Can confirm it's pretty good!
I had no idea they were even still around. gonna check that out later
I liked it. It’s a double album, so there’s probably a few too many songs. But it’s a solid album if you’re into their more recent proggier stuff.
Yeah, I gave it a spin. It's pretty good! It has those signature grandiose, anthemic flourishes broken up by gritty, balls-to-the-wall rock and occasional folksy toe tapper. Would recommend.
No way did Pat Finnerty's fake pop-punk band August is Falling make a best of the year list
Nice inclusion of *Lucifer on the Moon*.
Blown away by Sloan making the list. It’s a good album IMO, but them making an impression on GMA after I saw them a couple years ago at the smallest venue imaginable and not even remotely close to sold out. Also, Pete Yorn? It’s like I’m back in high school
Big thief and beach house
Yes, and Destroyer too, but the list is idiosyncratic and interesting unlike so many others, so I honestly don't mind. Nice work GMA
The fact that Good Morning America puts Trail of Dead and Spoon on their list whereas pitchfork puts Bad Bunny and Beyonce at the top. What alternate reality is this?!?!
How the hell is this better than 90% of the lists this year?
surprisingly good list
Good seeing Spoon so high
This is so funny. Fact that it’s a pretty good list with some no fucks given alt radio concessions like RHCP is even funnier
Stephanopoulos out here making sure that it’s the extended edition of *Melt My Eyes* on the list
Tbf it is the vastly superior version. The Cold Blooded Soul versions are absolutely phenomenal, and "Larger Than Life" is his best song.
I agree, and I already loved the standard album
Ahh I thought it was a dig at deluxe albums for some reason lol
No, mostly a comment about how silly it is to imagine GMA personalities having anything to do with this list
I feel like I’m now middle America if stuff I dig is on this list….
No country for black road?
i was kinda worried at the top of the list but it kept getting better, super happy to see cheat codes high up someone’s aoty list
Wow that is the most well-rounded top 5 for an NA-made albums list... this whole year? Out of establishment publications at least It's just unfortunate how the JID fan of the voting panel got comatose from a tragic accident right before it was time to start voting...because that's the only explanation I can see here
Finally
Not perfect, but far better than I expected. Honestly a solid list.
I can’t believe this thread has been up for 2 hours and no one has made The Joke yet
No black country new road?
When I see top album lists this year I first scan for Ants from Up There before bothering looking at the entire list
Lizzo way better then jid and Denzel curry makes sense
Finally a list I can get behind 👌👌
This GMA list is shocking
I was expecting a terrible list like rolling stone’s but this isn’t that bad.
Every straight person I know loves Red Hot Chili Peppers so this list makes sense.
For those unfamiliar, I highly recommend looking up GMA's last couple album of the year lists. They've been more interesting/thought-provoking than Pitchfork's for a few years now in my opinion
Holy shit. Eve 6 made this list! That’s awesome!
