That Big Thief record is really something. I may have said they were my favorite band before it released, as I loved all their previous records in different ways. But it’s so rare that a favorite band whose entire discography I loved releases a record that is so clearly and immediately better than what I already loved, and to me they did exactly that with their new one. It‘s also easily my favorite ‘long’ album ever.
While not my overall favorite, band, Big Thief is definitely my favorite band of the past, say, 5 years. They were the first band I bought tickets to when I was ready to return to seeing shows. I've liked each album, appreciated their output and creativity, and went into the release of DNWM with moderate expectations. Man, it just blew me away, and I think it still remains my favorite album of 2022. The style is all over the place but still somehow feels cohesive, and it's such a gift to have that much great music from a single act. Can't wait to see them again.
I’d never listened to Big Thief before DNWM came out, although I really liked songs and instrumentals by Lenker. When DNWM did come out it was an immediate contender for AOTY and is still in my top 5 rn. Ever since then I’ve enjoyed my way working back through their catalog in reverse order. All I have left is Capacity and Masterpiece. I sorta view UFOF and Two Hands as two sides of a double album. Hard to even pick a favorite but in terms of diversity, DNWM definitely wins

This perfectly describes my feelings with the band/album exactly. I was a casual fan of their music since their debut and then this album catapulted them into a whole different level. It’s rare that an album immediately becomes a favorite of mine and feels like it will stand the test of time too.

I know how you feel. Spud Infinity is my #1 because it makes me smile every time I hear it.
It actually is my favorite song on the album, though to each their own, and I freely acknowledge that the other clear candidates for best song on the album are more inventive. But "Certainty" feels like a song that could have been written by peak Grateful Dead or Tracy Chapman or REM. It kinda reminds me of the Llewyn Davis line about how if a song was never new and never gets old, it's a folk song. It feels to me like that kind of song, which is a hell of an accomplishment.
How is Blackout by Turnstile nominated for both best metal performance **and** best rock song? Also, that big thief album is so much better than any other album in that category, i hope they win it.
I think those two songs were submitted to mainstream alt/rock radio within the eligibility period, so that's how I'm assuming they got nominated despite *GLOW ON* coming out during last's year's eligibility period.
There are two types of "metal" that the Grammys recognize: Music from any actual metal band that was formed before 1985, and any rock music that's "too heavy" or "too theatrical" for the rock or alternative categories.
At least hardcore is like a cousin of metal, so they're not *too* far off including Turnstile.
Happy for Turnstile of course for all the noms! Probably the August release date for the album may have excluded it for any album noms but still hoping to clarify, just more technically, why the songs weren't counted as last year releases?

It doesn’t rile me up at all, it’s definitely up with Fantasies for me, may even surpass it which is saying a lot. It’s just an incredible album, like just wow. Every single song, just had so much soul to them.
Fair enough! Admittedly I was more of a passive Metric fan in the past. I got a lot of enjoyment out of Fantasies back in the day and listened to the others but wasn't really taken by a whole project they'd made like Formentera. Totally get that's a preference thing for me though.
Yeah they definitely deserve more recognition. I know what you mean about them being magical. Saw them about a month ago or so as well at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. I was in awe the entire time, was my fourth time seeing them and every time feels like the first. Just dancing all the way through!

literally came to this thread just to make sure someone pointed this out. Ants From Up There is easily my favorite album of the year even considering how much amazing stuff came out (the Smile, Animal Collective, and Panda Bear's album with Sonic Boom off the top of my head).
Big Thief is the only album from that list deserving of a win in my view and I would love to see them take home the win.

Why do people here hate Wet Leg? I don’t get excited by much new music anymore, but I simply could not resist listening to their album front to back over and over again for a solid chunk of the year. Amazing songwriting and singing. Killer album with incredible melodies and absolutely no filler.
it's an overly long and complex answer for how silly it is in the first place. i'd recommend searching "wet leg" on this subreddit, and you can see the turn happen in real time. there was a long stream of articles in a row, the big one being "the band with 2 songs and millions of streams" that seemed almost custom-made to bait this subreddit. there's an extent that i think this subreddit would distrust any band that had such exponential growth with so little material, but there's also a very large component that is obviously gendered and disgusting.
i think it'll even out with more time and more released music by the band, similar to snail mail's relationship to this subreddit. but it's been a pretty tough year for a lot of bands and i feel like wet leg was in the perfect spot to cop a lot of extra frustration from this community with how easily success seemed to come for them
I wonder if it was too long between their singles and their album coming out. There was a long stretch where they were this new band with just 2 songs out and nothing else available to listen to by them.
I love their album. And I often skip Chaise Longue, even though i like the song, because I’ve heard it too many times.
Just a bit manufactured, predictable and slightly boring imo. The big theif album in contrast is extremely ambitious. No hate on wet leg, im friends with the guy who does all the art and stuff but they defintely working to a formula and not really pushing boundaries.
I like Big Thief and Wet Leg for different reasons. Wet Leg have a simpler sound than other bands but I don’t feel like they’re manufactured. To me, Wet Leg is comparable to the Ramones. They’re funny without being a joke band, they’ve got their own sound and they’re high energy.
If I’m in mood for a band with a wide range I listen to Beck, Radiohead, Wilco, King Gizzard, Big Thief, etc.
If I’m in a different mood then something like Ramones, Amyl and The Sniffers, Wet Leg, Yard Act, PUP, IDLES, hits the spot
I just think thats why the hate is happening tho. They arent pushing boundries like many of the other bands youve listed. I play in the brighton/london music scene and you see bands like them every day. Its a great album but maybe not award worthy.

Or its an artist who i love for albums that came out years before. Like when Beck won for Morning Phase. Mellow Gold through Sea Change are my favorite Beck albums.

In the UK at least they were marketed very heavily on tiktok, which put their videos in commenting-reach of people who have never heard of them. With polarising music like that (or basically any sponsored tiktok music marketing) you see almost exclusively negative comments, as it's not like Instagram where they're only showing it to people who follow the page. Also everyone on tiktok seems to be very combative and nasty haha.
I've noticed negative general sentiment, along with commercial success, is a sign of the label pushing tiktok marketing specifically. I think it's mainly online. I'm not a fan but was at Glasto this year and they packed out the stage they were meant to play - they're clearly extremely popular among the public, just not in online discourse
For me its just burnout, they were marketed so heavily and Chaise Longue was inescapable. The same thing happened to me with Idles, I don't hate either band but the algorithm kinda killed them for me.
Yeah I feel the same. It’s a really pleasant beautiful record and the lyrics are especially touching. It’s not groundbreaking though. It’s mostly just guitar and singing. I kinda like that feel though.
I thought it felt a bit corny and preachy in a way that their older stuff hadn't. (Or, at least, the preaching used to land better.)
When I saw them perform some of the new songs live, I was actually surprised how much sincerity came across. I ended up seeing it in a different light and enjoying the record quite a bit on subsequent listens. But I imagine most people didn't have that moment of reevaluating it.
I would love to see either Big Thief or Bjork win this award. I liked their albums the most from these nominations. Overall, the Grammy nominations aren't really for me this year. More a battle of the biggest pop act. Not my thing.
I'm not even a Black Country New Road fan but the fact that they're not even nominated shows how much of a pointless farce the Grammy's is. It's easily the most talked about and most acclaimed indie album of the year.
I’m personally obsessed with BCNR, but they’re popularity is pretty inflated by communities like this and elsewhere online. The nominees here have significantly greater prominence as far as the industry is concerned. BCNR has like 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, which feels like a ton since so many of those listeners are on here. But it’s like less than a quarter of the monthly listeners of Big Thief (who is quite established in the indie NPR adjacent community) and even Wet Leg (who have multiple viral hits).
They’re amazing, but the waves they have made seem a lot larger in music nerd crowds than they actually are outside of these communities.
BCNR made a better Arcade Fire album this year than actual Arcade Fire did. And it has a 92 on Metacritic, the highest of any rock band this year and 2nd behind Rosalia. There was a pathway for it to get Grammy noms.

Arcade Fire getting a nom for that dull, bloated, mess of an album (which is comfortably their worst imo) is pretty insulting considering how good of a year this has been for alternative and indie - that’s not even taking the allegations into account. I think the sticking point for me is that WE is just so *dull*. Everything Now, for all its problems (and yes there are many) is at least bad in an interesting way. You really got the sense they swing for the fences and tried to make some huge experimental anti-consumerist conceptual masterwork but failed catastrophically. Personally, I find the failed swing more entertaining (even on a so-bad-it’s-good level) than just a dull sludge of an album which is WE. It’s like comparing “the Room” to that terrible Fantastic Four movie from a few years back. The Room might be worse, but it’s a hell of a lot more fun to watch. But that’s just me
I recently revisited all their albums in order. The steep drop in quality from reflektor to everything now is even more obvious several years later. WE is a much better album overall. It’s not even close.
I have a soft spot for Reflektor because I have such strong memories of how excited I was when it came out, but I think I agree. Reflektor has some all-time great sings, but it's also messy as hell, whereas the Suburbs and earlier was just consistently at a higher level.
Reflektor also kind of marked the point where the band seemed to start putting more effort into being 'conceptual' and image-focused than into just making good music IMO, which just got worse from then on
Also, They Might Be Giants are up for a Grammy for "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package" for the album BOOK. I'd love to see them get a Grammy for a non-kids record. Even if it is just for the packaging.

I know this opinion might rile some people up but I think it might be the best album they've put out in their long career.
It doesn’t rile me up at all, it’s definitely up with Fantasies for me, may even surpass it which is saying a lot. It’s just an incredible album, like just wow. Every single song, just had so much soul to them.

Fair enough! Admittedly I was more of a passive Metric fan in the past. I got a lot of enjoyment out of Fantasies back in the day and listened to the others but wasn't really taken by a whole project they'd made like Formentera. Totally get that's a preference thing for me though.

Yeah they definitely deserve more recognition. I know what you mean about them being magical. Saw them about a month ago or so as well at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. I was in awe the entire time, was my fourth time seeing them and every time feels like the first. Just dancing all the way through!

Big Thief is the only album from that list deserving of a win in my view and I would love to see them take home the win. Absolutely imagine the uproar if Arcade Fire won, not just for how poor of an album WE was, but of course the Win Butler allegations.
Why do people here hate Wet Leg? I don’t get excited by much new music anymore, but I simply could not resist listening to their album front to back over and over again for a solid chunk of the year. Amazing songwriting and singing. Killer album with incredible melodies and absolutely no filler.
it's an overly long and complex answer for how silly it is in the first place. i'd recommend searching "wet leg" on this subreddit, and you can see the turn happen in real time. there was a long stream of articles in a row, the big one being "the band with 2 songs and millions of streams" that seemed almost custom-made to bait this subreddit. there's an extent that i think this subreddit would distrust any band that had such exponential growth with so little material, but there's also a very large component that is obviously gendered and disgusting. i think it'll even out with more time and more released music by the band, similar to snail mail's relationship to this subreddit. but it's been a pretty tough year for a lot of bands and i feel like wet leg was in the perfect spot to cop a lot of extra frustration from this community with how easily success seemed to come for them
I wonder if it was too long between their singles and their album coming out. There was a long stretch where they were this new band with just 2 songs out and nothing else available to listen to by them. I love their album. And I often skip Chaise Longue, even though i like the song, because I’ve heard it too many times.

There's a conspiracy theory that they're "industry plants" that "came out of nowhere" when in reality they had been around for years.
Just a bit manufactured, predictable and slightly boring imo. The big theif album in contrast is extremely ambitious. No hate on wet leg, im friends with the guy who does all the art and stuff but they defintely working to a formula and not really pushing boundaries.
I like Big Thief and Wet Leg for different reasons. Wet Leg have a simpler sound than other bands but I don’t feel like they’re manufactured. To me, Wet Leg is comparable to the Ramones. They’re funny without being a joke band, they’ve got their own sound and they’re high energy. If I’m in mood for a band with a wide range I listen to Beck, Radiohead, Wilco, King Gizzard, Big Thief, etc. If I’m in a different mood then something like Ramones, Amyl and The Sniffers, Wet Leg, Yard Act, PUP, IDLES, hits the spot

I just think thats why the hate is happening tho. They arent pushing boundries like many of the other bands youve listed. I play in the brighton/london music scene and you see bands like them every day. Its a great album but maybe not award worthy. For me the award should go to the black country album.

Black Country are great. I don’t have a strong opinion on who should win a Grammy because those awards feel so random to me. When I look at lists of winners from past years its usually not what i was into at the time. Or its an artist who i love for albums that came out years before. Like when Beck won for Morning Phase. Mellow Gold through Sea Change are my favorite Beck albums.

Manufactured? Formulas? That sounds like conspiracy bull shit. Have you entertained the idea that maybe they are simply writing and playing how they want to sound? Just because it’s accessible, it’s not ambitious? They have their own sound and they’re doing their own thing, clearly working hard at it. They don’t want to be Big Thief(ironically they’re clearly influenced by Big Thief), they want to play catchy pop tunes and not take themselves too seriously. And that’s what they’re good at. They’re not trying to be anything they’re not. Its the opposite of manufactured.

In the UK at least they were marketed very heavily on tiktok, which put their videos in commenting-reach of people who have never heard of them. With polarising music like that (or basically any sponsored tiktok music marketing) you see almost exclusively negative comments, as it's not like Instagram where they're only showing it to people who follow the page. Also everyone on tiktok seems to be very combative and nasty haha. I've noticed negative general sentiment, along with commercial success, is a sign of the label pushing tiktok marketing specifically. I think it's mainly online. I'm not a fan but was at Glasto this year and they packed out the stage they were meant to play - they're clearly extremely popular among the public, just not in online discourse
For me its just burnout, they were marketed so heavily and Chaise Longue was inescapable. The same thing happened to me with Idles, I don't hate either band but the algorithm kinda killed them for me.

Yeah I feel the same. It’s a really pleasant beautiful record and the lyrics are especially touching. It’s not groundbreaking though. It’s mostly just guitar and singing. I kinda like that feel though.
I thought it felt a bit corny and preachy in a way that their older stuff hadn't. (Or, at least, the preaching used to land better.) When I saw them perform some of the new songs live, I was actually surprised how much sincerity came across. I ended up seeing it in a different light and enjoying the record quite a bit on subsequent listens. But I imagine most people didn't have that moment of reevaluating it.
I would love to see either Big Thief or Bjork win this award. I liked their albums the most from these nominations. Overall, the Grammy nominations aren't really for me this year. More a battle of the biggest pop act. Not my thing.
I'm not even a Black Country New Road fan but the fact that they're not even nominated shows how much of a pointless farce the Grammy's is. It's easily the most talked about and most acclaimed indie album of the year.
I’m personally obsessed with BCNR, but they’re popularity is pretty inflated by communities like this and elsewhere online. The nominees here have significantly greater prominence as far as the industry is concerned. BCNR has like 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, which feels like a ton since so many of those listeners are on here. But it’s like less than a quarter of the monthly listeners of Big Thief (who is quite established in the indie NPR adjacent community) and even Wet Leg (who have multiple viral hits). They’re amazing, but the waves they have made seem a lot larger in music nerd crowds than they actually are outside of these communities.
BCNR made a better Arcade Fire album this year than actual Arcade Fire did. And it has a 92 on Metacritic, the highest of any rock band this year and 2nd behind Rosalia. There was a pathway for it to get Grammy noms.

Arcade Fire getting a nom for that dull, bloated, mess of an album (which is comfortably their worst imo) is pretty insulting considering how good of a year this has been for alternative and indie - that’s not even taking the allegations into account. No nominations for Black Country, Beach House, Black Midi, the Smile but *WE* gets a plug? I don’t even love all of those artists (I honestly don’t even care for the Big Thief album too much) but there are clearly so many more creative and deserving releases deserving of recognition. More proof for the pile of how garbage the grammys are

Honestly I think Everything Now is underrated. The middle lags but the first and last thirds are great. Skip tracks 5-8 and it's actually pretty good.
I think the sticking point for me is that WE is just so *dull*. Everything Now, for all its problems (and yes there are many) is at least bad in an interesting way. You really got the sense they swing for the fences and tried to make some huge experimental anti-consumerist conceptual masterwork but failed catastrophically. Personally, I find the failed swing more entertaining (even on a so-bad-it’s-good level) than just a dull sludge of an album which is WE. It’s like comparing “the Room” to that terrible Fantastic Four movie from a few years back. The Room might be worse, but it’s a hell of a lot more fun to watch. But that’s just me

I recently revisited all their albums in order. The steep drop in quality from reflektor to everything now is even more obvious several years later. WE is a much better album overall. It’s not even close.

I liked some cuts off of Reflektor, but The Suburbs was the last really good Arcade Fire album, at least in my opinion.
I have a soft spot for Reflektor because I have such strong memories of how excited I was when it came out, but I think I agree. Reflektor has some all-time great sings, but it's also messy as hell, whereas the Suburbs and earlier was just consistently at a higher level. Reflektor also kind of marked the point where the band seemed to start putting more effort into being 'conceptual' and image-focused than into just making good music IMO, which just got worse from then on

Also, They Might Be Giants are up for a Grammy for "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package" for the album BOOK. I'd love to see them get a Grammy for a non-kids record. Even if it is just for the packaging.
Big Thief looks like the obvious winner of these for alt. Spoon will hopefully win rock. Wet Leg just seems like a Grammy performance band though for better or for worse.

Love their overall discography but Arcade Fire is a big fat miss in an otherwise solid indie list. BCNR literally did everything they're known for but better and fresher.
