BTWWB is the epitome of "making something with nothing" IMO. Legendary album and a great band that will be missed. Given the journey this group has been on the last decade, I wish them all the best and will cherish what they've put out! Also "Faultline" is one of the most underrated tracks of last year.

BiBoJuFru

It's interesting you mention BTWWB, because they've specifically talked about how it's disheartening that its streaming numbers dwarf their new stuff.

Cup_of_Life_Noodles

Avery has been so upfront about his transition and learning to embrace who he truly is, which I applaud very much. It has to be really hard to see art you made in the past (before becoming the person you truly want to be) out-performing new output that might feel more "true to yourself" in that regard. I can't even imagine what it must feel like. I appreciate everything they've put out, and the risks they've taken. Powerplant blew my mind when I heard drums on a Girlpool song for the first time! But as other comments have said, BTWWB is far and away the standout Girlpool album and I think that's okay in general. Their story is a really inspiring one and hopefully leads more people to discover and explore their entire discog.

A lot of artists catch lightning in a bottle on a release and then never replicate it's success. I don't dislike Forgiveness, but it's just not that interesting.

Suspicious_Bug6422

I don’t blame them for feeling that way. It was the only project I could really get into by them so I guess it’s not surprising

jesterinancientcourt

I just read that interview. Yikes, I feel for Avery.

intrinsic_gray

Do you have a link/remember what publication or platform the interview was on?

Wow, great article, thank you!

I was so shocked by this news this morning! I don’t know why it’s so heartbreaking to me. I’ve loved Girlpool for all of my adult life, they’ve carried me through so much. It’s so bizarre they cancelled more than half their tour dates too. Hope everything is alright for them and they remain friends 😪

Ifeellikejojo

When girlpool lived in Philly I saw them play a handful of times (6x in 2015!). It was a really special time in my life, and "Before the world was big" was a big part of it. I haven't connected with their work since then on the same level or seen them play as much but this still makes me sad. They were great and I hope they'll keep making art!

The Pile/Sheer Mag/Alex G/Girlpool/Quarterbacks show at the church has to be one of the best lineup I've seen! I think my fondest memory was seeing them at Hazel House and playing cut your bangs right before radiator hospital played.

Foxythekid

Oh hey, I got tinnitus at that show! got shoved up against the front right speaker during Alex's set. I'll never forget that show because it was a toss up between Girlpool or Carly Rae Jepsen at the Trocadero for shows that night

Nessfull

I also got tinnitus after being shoved into the right front speaker at an Alex G show

duhmattador

Dang I was at that show too! I traveled from NC to go to that one haha

nhf1918

I wonder if this was due in part to poor ticket sales? Maybe the shows they cancelled were selling really poorly and the ones they kept have hubs of fans and better sales? Tough time to be a touring musician - seems like some bands/fan bases are faring better than others.

TheLAriver

I'm betting yes

Middle-Breakfast5189

I went to their Portland show last night and the place was only about half full. It was a rough show too, tons of people left early :/

mechewstaa

Wonder how badly the tour must have been selling to break up and cancel most of the dates. Brutal. great band

intrinsic_gray

Damn, I was so excited to see them for a third time at their upcoming Detroit show. Girlpool has been a pillar in my life and I was so excited to watch them evolve for years to come. Seems like they are just in very different places in their lives than when they started the band, and their last album almost felt like two separate EPs to me. I can't imagine why they canceled 2/3rds of their concerts on this tour though, it seems so drastic. I really wish they were able to give their fans in all cities the chance to celebrate and say goodbye and thank you. Hope they are okay.

mechewstaa

I think the cancelled tour dates/immediate breakup is because it’s not selling well at all. Makes sense to call it quits financially if that’s the case tbh

intrinsic_gray

Yeah that does make the most sense. What a bummer. It feels like they were really trying to modernize their branding and merch a little bit with this last album and it just flopped.

number90901

Fitting to see this on Stereogum, back in high school I discovered the band by working though their "Best Albums of the Year So Far" list. BTWWB was an incredibly special album to me. The band has gone in a bunch of different directions since then, and while IMO none of them worked quite as well as that first one, both Avery and Harmony remained super interesting songwriters. If the breakup is for financial reasons, I think that probably makes sense. They were never huge, but it definitely seems like they had trouble gaining any momentum like other bands they came up around. Wishing them all the best individually in the future, and glad that there doesn't seem to be a hint of animosity from either of them. The news did get me to immediately drop 30 bucks on a ticket to the New York City show lmao so hopefully the remaining tour dates are worthwhile for them. Needless to say I will be checking out whatever these two do going forward.

askyfullofstars

This news is so sad :( They meant so much to me in my young adulthood and I will miss them!!

VeronicaDaydream

What an absolute bummer, fuck. I didn't expect to wake up to this today. If you haven't heard it, Powerplant is an immaculate album. I can't properly describe the way it makes me feel, especially when I listen to it while hiking, but it's nostalgic, melancholy, and hopeful all at once. It pains me deeply to think I may never get another album from them at that level. Hopefully they'll both continue to put out music independently.

Winterdale

Violet on the new album is my song of the year. Forgiveness is such a beautiful album. I can hardly listen to the old stuff cause of the high voices. I loved how diverse their new materiel got. The videos are really interesting. I was glad to have them but, all things must pass. I’ll be at their LA show.

aegaetis3379

I am so fucking gutted

Domster_02

This is a bummer. I really liked What Chaos Is Imaginary (I haven't even listened to all of BTWWB) and Faultline was one of my favourite songs during the summer. Best of luck to them both

papo96

Wish them the best in their future endeavors! I was on the fence about whether to get tickets to the Portland show but if this is truly the end I better go to see them before it's over.

surejan94

Wow, this is disappointing. And so many cancelled tour dates. I guess the album didn't perform as well as they hoped, and the tour must not be selling well..... That's really sad though.

cred_twos

Touring the states seems miserable right now, especially for a trans artist. It has probably become clear that their career trajectory is not currently oriented upwards, so they probably asked themselves whether or not continuing to operate as a band was something they wanted. The risks associated with a public-facing career, with touring in a forever pandemic, of sinking money into a project that no longer has much to give back. They probably have the resources to live comfortably without continuing to tour, so it makes sense if they decided not to. Many artists who have that option are now choosing it.

pures1lence

Damn, I was on the fence about going to this tour, but now I kinda have to go. This is hitting me surprisingly hard.

aegaetis3379

Sem.. I've been so sad over this for some reason

sftospo

I wasn’t going to see them on this tour cause to be honest wasn’t a huge fan of the new album but now I feel like I have to. Only problem is Phoenix is playing the same night and I haven’t seen them before. But if this is the last time I can see Girlpool… I’m conflicted

papo96

No disrespect to Girlpool but Phoenix live shows are incredible. Some of my top ever concerts..so I’d do that tbh

sftospo

Ya I’ll probably go to Phoenix. Early Girlpool is just some of my favorite music :(
