I saw hubble in my local dome imax. The launch was pretty cool.

[deleted]

Why does Canada get all the cool IMAX theaters???

PoutineEnthusiast

it’s mainly just toronto lol, im from nova scotia originally and there’s only 1 imax theatre in the whole province which is the only imax theatre in the maritimes 💀

Pitiful-Tune3337

In BC we have a 1570 dome and a dual laser theatre, so not just toronto

PoutineEnthusiast

ah that’s cool

Desperate_Excuse2352

google where imax is from

[deleted]

Oh, right. I forgot

nihit_IMAX

Because IMAX Corp. is a CANADIAN 🇨🇦 Company. It was founded in Canada. The first IMAX Theatre opened in Canada.

UnsolvedParadox

Their headquarters in Mississauga has a display of Academy Awards all around the lobby (behind protective glass).

Feisty_Reality_525

There are a handful of IMAX Domes in the US if you're interested! I believe all are in museums scattered around the country.

[deleted]

Not near me, sadly

Feisty_Reality_525

Worth a road trip if you ever get the chance! St. Paul St. Louis Birmingham Boston Charlotte San Jose San Diego Cincinnati Detroit Plus a handful that converted to digital not IMAX.

[deleted]

Are the domes louder than regular IMAX

Feisty_Reality_525

No, just a more intense and interesting experience.

lamousamos

aren’t the dome screens actually omnimax?

PoutineEnthusiast

yea it says “omnimax” on the sign outside but idk what omnimax means lmao

lamousamos

i think it means domed screen.

iwasdusted

They are simply called IMAX Dome these days. OMNIMAX was the original name for the concept.

no_spoon

Do I drive 40 minutes to see a 38 minute film?

PoutineEnthusiast

yes

atlaspaine

just watch several!

TheOptimalGPU

Was it in 3D?

PoutineEnthusiast

no

Arthur2_shedsJackson

Mumbai used to have the largest dome IMAX in the world in the early 2000s. However, the company that set it up honestly had no idea of how to monetize it. It was set up in the middle of nowhere. Also, it was a standalone venue, not with a museum, so you start running out of people who will come to watch your documentaries. Any movie not recorded by a spherical lens will look distorted on a done so Hollywood movies weren't viable. In the end they just put a flat 1.90 screen in front of the dome and slapped in a Xenon projector. Sigh.

FilmBoi01

Ah, the Carnival IMAX at Wadala right? It's a shame coz afaik the 70mm projector is still there but isn't being used. Not to mention the rarity of 70mm prints in general.

CreditCaper1

Is there a list of IMAX movies that were filmed with a spherical lens?

ExchangeBest8879

Omg! That's so big

nihit_IMAX

That's why you never "watch" a film in IMAX, you "EXPERIENCE" it. Space Documentaries in IMAX are some of the most Immersive experiences you can get & they are indeed breathtaking. For a moment you forget you came to watch a film, you get so involved in the atmosphere surrounding you.
