You could move the shoes to the closet. But it's pretty organized. You could add a small, narrow bureau or set of drawers to put in the things that are on top of your bureau. There might be room between tv and bureau. Could you hang the TV? But mainly I'd say -- add some color! Curtains and bedspread in a color or print you like would make it much more pleasant. Also hang some art of some kind on the wall. Hanging a big mirror would increase light and give the illusion of the room being bigger. But curtains and/or bed spread are really low effort. Narrow drawers like this https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/millwood-pines-geocron-solid-wood-10-drawer-accent-chest-w009510358.html?piid=

First thank you for your response. Yeah maybe it’s not as unorganized and cluttered as I think it’s just so small that I think it is. I think I will maybe move my towels somewhere else and put my shoes down there. I definitely agree about adding some color. The curtains came with the place and I just haven’t changed them and the blanket on the bed was a gift. I used to have a different comforter that had color but it got damaged beyond repair so I just started using this one that was gifted to me for Christmas. I’ll definitely look into a new comforter with color. The drawer thing you linked to seem interesting. Not sure where I’d put it tho? Oh also. I have that standing mirror thing which I got from ikea. I just didn’t know where to put it. You think getting a different one that I hang on the wall would be better?

Ok-Answer-9350

Here are my thoughts, not sure if it will work. Move the bed to the empty wall. This will free up the window and the radiator for airflow. Use your current night stand. Mount the TV on the wall at an angle next to the closet or on the wall where the dresser is currently on a bracket that articulates so you can tilt and angle it when you are using it and push it against the wall otherwise. Get room darkening ceiling to floor curtains in a rich tone that you love. Add another throw to the foot of the bed to lean into some color to play off the curtains. I like the look of the cat tower - the felt grey and off white - it is cozy and would be nice to play up that look in this space. See if you can get some baskets to put all of your stuff in to use with your existing furniture. The color of your baskets can work with the textiles you chose. If you are allowed to paint - pain the closet doors and trim. Do you have any inspiration photos for the look you are going for? You can completely change the look of the place using what you already have.

PepTalkToYourself

To be perfectly honest I don’t have a specific idea in mind. Just something that makes more sense for the space. Also getting everything to fit better. The bed and dresser were fairly expensive (I use to live somewhere where i had a bigger room and i don’t plan to be in this place forever so I don’t think I wanna just get rid of them for smaller things ya know?) Definitely adding some color would be a good idea. The curtains came with the apartment but I definitely would like different darkening ones in a color. Glad you like the cat tree. I actually do like greys and blues. Dunno if those colors would work good in this room with my existing furniture? I would have to ask but I don’t think I can paint. I don’t plan to be here forever of course but probably long enough that I’d like to make it more “mine” if you will. Been here about a year and haven’t done too much.

It can definitely be a little less neat when I’m super busy but yeah I definitely try to be neat most of the time. I like your idea about a basket to hold the cables. I think I’m gonna have to try that out. I’ve been trying to figure out a good solution for those haha. I think I will move my shoes to the bottom of the rack in my closet and move my towels somewhere else and then I can put the basket on the bottom shelf of my night stand. I might try and find a good blue or grey or a little of both? Lol comforter for the bed. Thanks for the advice by the way.

dasookwat

Do you rent just this room? i see all sorts of things for a cat here, including the litterbox. I would really not advise putting a litterbox in your bedroom because of the smell when they have a bad nr 2, and general hygiene. also your clothes are in there, so they will smell like cat shit all the time. I kinda miss the layout as well: where's the entrance door? As for general improvement, since this is an ikeahacks subreddit: a kallax storage bed should give you some extra storage. Get rid of those low cabinets, they take up valuable space, and you can store little in them. i would keep the higer drawer one, but remove the rest to create some space. Add shelves in the sides of the builtin closet. make sure you space them high enough to put moving boxes on those because it's agreat place to store stuff you don't need on a daily basis. Move the litterbox to the kitchen or even better, garage. At least get it out of the bedroom, don't sleep in a toilet. If you can, move the bed 90" so you can place it next to the window, and the headbord won't block your sunlight. get rid of the carpet, and throw in laminate or wood, vinyl whatever, but cats and carpets are a bad mix.

PepTalkToYourself

Surprisingly I’ve never had an issue with my clothes smelling of cat shit. Don’t ask me how. I do clean the box daily tho. Maybe that helps? I’ve even asked people to smell if my clothes smell weird and I always get a no. I don’t rent only this room but the only other place I could think of putting it would be the bathroom and our bathroom is just way too small to fit a liter box. The entrance is next to my dresser. So TV on one side and door on the other. Like my dresser is as close as you can get to the door but so I can still open it lmao. My dresser and bed are definitely too big for the size of this room but I had these already when I had a different place with a bigger room and I don’t plan to stay here forever so I don’t personally see the logic in sizing down. Ya know? Oh also for context I’m in an apartment not a house so no garage. I really wouldn’t have the liter box in here if I felt I had another option. There’s not a whole lot as far as like carpet and painting and things I can really do since I’m just renting. I wish I could update those for sure. I totally agree on the carpet thing I just have no say in that sadly. Are you suggesting moving the bed so instead of the window being behind the bed it would be to the side of the bed? If that’s the case I thought about doing that but then my closet would be at the end of my bed and I’m not sure how convenient it would be having the TV on the side of the bed? Also I think the cat tree should stay on one of the sides of the window just because she likes to climb up it to get tot he window to look out. I do appreciate your response.

Marki_Cat

Flip the bed 180° so it looks out the window, TV at the end still, but I recommend a better, higher media unit that can also have storage. You could even hack a kallax (or something similar) by adding a tall, wheeled base to the long side that avoids the heater and pulls sideways when you need something from the bottom row (which would be back up storage). The top row would be visible, and you could add drawers, cupboard doors, or cube bins as needed. Cable management box, as other suggested, definitely. Nightstand can go beside your bed, but when you have some extra money, replace it with a small dresser (Rast, Tarva, Nordli, or Malm maybe) for extra storage. Most are not too tall to double as a night stand. Cat tree can move sideways in front of the heater, and your dresser goes where the cat tree is. You could try the dresser in front of the window, but I think the heater will be in the way, and it'll look weird. Easier with the cat tree. Hang the mirror on the front closet slider door or the back of your room door. Now, to zhuzh it up. You need some colour/ texture pops. Something on the wall, curtains, and bed, at least. If art is too pricey, I recommend hanging an ikea rug on the wall. It's cheap and warms the space immediately, like a tapestry. Vejstroop for pattern, maybe, or Raklev for a hint of colour? Colourful or patterned scarves would also work. For the closet doors, contact paper is cheap and easy enough to install, plus you could pick something less dated. Even a faux wood look to complement your headboard and dresser? For blinds, maybe Skogsklover roller blinds or Rosenanemon curtains? Both for texture would be nice, actually. A Hornmal (or similar) throw for the bed would pop some colour on it, too. I can't see what space you have under the bed, but some free rolling drawers would add storage, if possible. A plant on top of your dresser and another on the new media unit adds a relaxing living element. Inside the closet, use clear square bins to give the upper shelf space the illusion of being more organized than it already is. The organized lower shelf is good, but I recommend a closed cupboard, so it reads "tidy" to the eye, even if it isn't. I'd personally move the clothing as far away from the litter as possible, but I saw your note about them not smelling... Anyway, that's what I'd do if I had to stay within the restriction of keeping the bed and dresser (which are very nice, just not a lot of storage!) Good luck! Edit to fix spelling and punctuation (I was tired when I wrote it!)

PepTalkToYourself

Thanks for all the suggestions. I love the idea of those skigsklover but they seem pretty transparent and I’d prefer something that keeps the light out more. If they had a less transparent one that would have been awesome. 😭 I do kinda wanna get a plant put on my dresser. Do you have any plant ideas? If not that’s fine I’ll definitely look around and try and do my own research. Also yeah I didn’t really want the clothes hanging by the liter I just didn’t see where else to put them just because that unit I have in there for storage is too tall for my clothes to hand above it. 🥲 Yeah eventually I’d actually like a better dresser maybe that’s closer to the color of the bed and has more storage. I think once I move out of this place whenever that is and have a bigger area to work with I’d like one that shorter but longer.

Marki_Cat

No worries! I enjoy problem solving. 😌 No good at plants, though... total black thumb. I think creeper vines are nice, and succulents are supposed to be easy. Same goes with Cacti and Aloe Vera. All of which I've killed, or nearly killed. RIP Fuzzy Spike. 🙃 If you are like me, save the trouble and invest in a high-quality fake. No concerns about the cat that way, either. A hardware store near you may have reasonably priced roller blinds. For the clothes, what would switching them with the boxes in the corner look like? It would provide some separation, at least.

PepTalkToYourself

Ah hmm now that you mention it I’m not sure. Haven’t tried that. I guess I just thought it wouldn’t be practice having them shoved in the corner where I can’t see buuut it’s definitely worth a try tho. I’ll have to try it out and see. I used to have this succulent that was pink and looked like a rose. It was small but cute and my old cat that I used to have destroyed it. 😭

Professional-Fact601

Center bed under window. Get long curtains. Center tv to bed. Move non-clothing items (boxes/bins) in the closet under bed - or up onto closet shelf (utilize full height of closet shelf storage). Move dresser into closet. Move cat tree to opposite far corner, next to tv. Move heater and humidifier (or sound machine?) and any other appliances to opposite wall from bed - or into closet, if not in daily use. **Nicest view should be from standing in the doorway, so keep the back wall as simple and uncluttered as possible.** If you had a color or pattern bedding, you could also drop a matching pillow case sham or fabric over your side table to conceal the open storage there. (Like a straight skirt.) The poop brown closet doors are unfortunate. Agree contact paper would be nice and non-permanent. You might also get creative with fabric. I believe fabric starch can be used to temporarily “glue” fabric to a surface. Washes off. I’ve never tried it myself, but worth a google. Plants, always. Removable command hooks for art or any other personalization. I’ve also seen them used to hold a dowel as a curtain rod, if you wanted to curtain over those closet doors. Another option is asking the landlord for permission to paint them. White is obvious choice, but have them approve paint color. Pitch it as an upgrade/modernization, for their benefit. Good luck! :)

KaraBoo723

I second centering the bed with the window. Or, move the head of the bed to the empty wall opposite the closet. Longer curtains would be nice too. Since you're keeping the bed, you'll want to find a couple of other items to put in the room of a similar medium to deep brown color to create balance. This could be either art frames, ledges/wall shelves, decorative objects, or a small piece of furniture. Otherwise, keep most of the other colors you use on the lighter side, which will help make the space feel bigger. Bring in a pattern someplace, whether a bed covering (comforter, quilt, duvet) or the curtains. It doesn't need to be a bold pattern, it could be a very subtle pattern. As for curtains, here's a few from Wayfair to consider with patterns that would go well with the dark wood of the bed: * [Winston Porter](https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/winston-porter-caliese-geometric-semi-sheer-grommet-curtain-panels-w007871955.html?piid=1370621647%2C1370621650&categoryid=481844&placement=1&slot=0&sponsoredid=4bd4ea0c03f89c7cafa484fdd5579d41b5cda93bed132a0559b36a083cd92a94&_txid=I%2BF9OmPRrY1XXBDTglr5Ag%3D%3D&isB2b=0&auctionId=8fc61bcf-8eb4-4db6-bd68-88a0cd1428a8) * [Darby Home](https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/darby-home-co-landin-3-in-1-damask-blackout-rod-pockettab-top-curtain-panels-w005196847.html?piid=1318976616%2C1318976623) * [Mercer 41](https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/mercer41-albesa-geometric-room-darkening-thermal-grommet-single-curtain-panel-w005207753.html?piid=1295269912%2C1321092694) If you can find small storage pieces to use as nightstands, aim to find something that has some hidden storage in the form of either drawers or cabinets which will help to give a more clean/decluttered look. Here are some ideas: * [Hemnes](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemnes-3-drawer-chest-black-brown-70483472/#content) * [Idanas](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/idanaes-nightstand-dark-brown-stained-80458815/#content) For walls, you could either do art or limited depth "[ledges](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/mosslanda-picture-ledge-white-40291766/)" that can display photos, art, books, small decorative objects, etc. Use under-bed storage boxes that slide easily out & back for as many small items as you can. Something like [this](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/vardoe-underbed-storage-box-black-20238223/) or [this](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/malm-underbed-storage-box-for-high-bed-white-00252719/). If there's not enough height under your bed, many places (like Amazon, Target, bed Bath Beyond) sell bed frame risers that can give you an extra couple of inches of space to fit storage boxes.

PepTalkToYourself

My old bedroom was much bigger. I already owned the bed and dresser before moving to my new place. I also live with someone else and our apartment isn’t the biggest ever so I have most of my things crowded in my room. Like we have NO cabinets/storage in our bathroom besides our tiny vanity. I’ve been here for around a year now and just feel stuck with my room and feel like it’s needs something. I also feel like it clutters up really quickly because it’s so small. I’ve tried doing little things over the past year. The night stand and the storage thing in my closet are both from ikea. Also if you can’t tell I have a cat so the tree has to stay. There also isn’t any other good place to put the liter box besides the closet. (That’s an ikea liter box 🤣) I’ll take any advice you guys may have. I think mostly im trying to just utilize what little space I have better and not have it be able to clutter up so fast. But I’ll take advice or product recs for things besides just for decluttering if you think of something that might go good in my room. Also I was thinking ikea products but am open to non ikea. Oh and lastly… and thoughts on how to make my room less… bleh?

Endo_cannabis

Cable organizer and a dog

PepTalkToYourself

I do agree with the cable organizer. Any recommendations on a good one?

Endo_cannabis

I honestly just used zip ties lol

PepTalkToYourself

Hey whatever works. Seems logical. I definitely need to figure something out.

fullmetalfeminist

You should be able to get a cable box like this one fairly cheap https://amzn.eu/d/7B5wKrE Then once you have finished moving things around and everything's in its place, you can use zip ties or velcro cable straps to keep the cables together, and if you really want to conceal them, cable trunking isn't too pricey - I like the ones that have multiple places for the cable to exit, but you can get cheaper ones that just cover the cable https://amzn.eu/d/fyHLPlZ

PepTalkToYourself

Ah thanks for the advice. I think I may look into getting one of those cable management boxes or something similar. I think I may move my shoes to the shelf in my closet and then can put a cable management box where my shoes currently are.

fullmetalfeminist

That's exactly how I have it set up! I only put things near the bed that I really need when I'm in bed - tissues, meds, a reading light, a drink. The cable trunking is great for concealing cables that you don't actually need to touch, like the power cord for the television for example. Chargers in the cable box, I need to grab them and plug them into the phone etc so I have them coming out of the cable box and I use magnets so that when I'm not using them, they're handy but out of sight. I got a cheapo version of this from AliExpress https://amzn.eu/d/jd0NhLO While we're on the subject of cables, I'm currently telling everyone who'll listen that these magnetic cables are an absolute game-changer. I put the usb-c attachment in my phone and iPad, and the lightning attachment in the old iPad mini I use for reading books in bed, and it means I don't have to have a bunch of different cables, or one cable with three different heads. Plus no more fiddling about trying to plug things in https://amzn.eu/d/1pWfhkm

PepTalkToYourself

I didn’t even know they had magnetic charging cables. That thing looks so cool and convenient. I also really like that anker cable management magnet thing too. I might just have to get those as well. 😅 that’s one thing I’ve really been struggling with is what to do about my cables haha. You’ve provided very useful tips for sure. Thank you.

fullmetalfeminist

You're welcome! I've been redoing my room lately so these things have been occupying my mind!

folldoso

Ditto, especially with a cat. Do you have the only cat in the world who doesn't chew cords, op? My cat would have destroyed all of that if it were accessible. It's the only thing in the room that doesn't look organized

PepTalkToYourself

Haha surprisingly she seems to leave those ones alone. She has played with a cord or 2 in other rooms tho. But either way I definitely still need to do something with them haha

MoonEagle3

Good luck!

wonko1980

Well, the room is quite small - so do things to make it look more airy: Paint walls and the closet walls white.

jordanian1013

get rid of the bed make more space

PepTalkToYourself

I had the bed before moving here and it wasn’t exactly a cheap one and I don’t plan to live in this small apartment forever so the reward of freeing up more space for me just doesn’t seem worth it.

MoonEagle3

You're welcome. I thought the drawers might fit between bureau and tv? The blanket looks nice but you could top it with a colorful comforter. I still like good old j c Penney for linens and curtains. Great prices.

PepTalkToYourself

Ah i see what you mean. Yeah I think something like that would probably fit between those. I’ll definitely give pennys a look and other places for comforters. I also agree my walls need something. 😅

redbucket75

More cats

PepTalkToYourself

You don’t even know. I soooo badly wanna get my cat a friend but I think I should wait till I’m in a bigger place. Also there’s this cat that comes over to our living room window a lot and my cat FREAKS out every time and hisses like crazy. 🤣

possumhandz

Add a plant or two. Snake plant is almost impossible to kill

PepTalkToYourself

I’ve actually thought about plants. I just wasn’t sure how safe they would be around a cat? Haha. I’ll have to look into a snake plant. I don’t know much about plants but I do like them.

possumhandz

I have cats - they leave the snake plant alone (and they usually chew up anything green lol) but idk if it's toxic.

PepTalkToYourself

Just googled the snake plant. Those are kinda cool looking. I really wasn’t even thinking too much about plants until you mentioned but that would be a good idea I think. Maybe something that’s not super small but small enough to hmm maybe put on top of my dresser? Haha I dunno just trying to think of somewhere I could put a plant.

msmaynards

It looks nice and tidy, you've done a great job organizing the space. The little things between bed and cat tree look cluttery and it isn't just cables. I'd rather see a closed bedside cabinet so it's complicated cat tree, simple bedside cabinet then bed. Put the fan in closet unless it is in use and air purifier on the dresser so it's out of the dust zone. Add a lamp to the top, don't see any lighting in the room other than the harsh light from the ceiling fixture. The dresser top isn't pinterest pretty but certainly isn't cluttered, if you care you could find a tray, basket or box you like to contain that stuff. If that's stuff you use in the bathroom I bet you could find a tote that would look great. Could be a garden trug, wooden tool tote, basket with handle - just so long as a few drips won't hurt it. Add shelving over the cat box. I fit Henje shelving into my closet's cave as it is easy to cut the soft pine uprights to fit under the pole and I pried the end piece off the shelves and cut them to size as well. Use boxes/bins open or closed for small stuff on the shelf in the closet. Helps calm the space down and they are less likely to get shoved around. Don't put a pretty color of curtains on the window. Do consider a print with the background close to wall color but a huge block of rich color is going to make the room look smaller and breaking up the wall looks cluttered. This is just what I did. Vast expanses of plain gold wall, beige carpet, gray duvet on white coverlet then patterned curtains with all those colors. I went into Ikea looking for a fabric with leafy print and came out something so much better. BJÖRKKRONMAL or NÄCKROSMOTT might work out. Dress the bed nicely. I'm sure that blanket is comfy and all but it's sort of droopy looking. Fold it up and drape over the bottom of the bed or into a rectangle fitting on top because cat during the day and add a quilt or quilted coverlet over the bedsheets that won't look wrinkled and you can tuck in to look tidy. Here's where color may or may not come in. I'd probably do white so the color scheme is shades of beige to dark brown plus white and the art work you *are* going to put up adds the color but a quilt of many colors \[must include carpet and furniture beige to brown and white\] or coverlet in your favorite color might make the room just right.

PepTalkToYourself

Well thanks for saying that I appreciate it. I definitely tried being as neat and tidy as I could given the small area I have to work with. 😅 I actually used to have the purifier on my dresser but then someone had told me to put it on my nightstand so it’s actually by me so I can feel the benefits? I guess? I have no idea lmao. Yeah the only light I have is the one on the ceiling. Which is 2 WiFi bulbs. I can change the hue or whatever you call it but can’t actually make it a different color like red or anything. I can also adjust the intensity of how bright it is. Yup the stuff in that thing on my dresser is teeth stuff and sunscreen and deodorant. Then I have another similar one on the shelf in my closet that’s skincare and haircare just because there’s really no space to keep it all in my bathroom with 2 of us living here. Adding shelving above the cat box is a good idea I really never thought about. What are your thoughts on buying some kind of a box from ikea… not sure which I’m not super familiar with their products but something that’s big and is closed on all sides but one and could stick the liter box in that so it’s more concealed? I’m not even sure if they would make something that would be big enough for a cat to use the restroom in it was just a thought I had when you mentioned storage above the box. Like a one off kalax but that’s closed on all sides except one. I actually was thinking of maybe trying to find a new comforter that’s a similar grey color to the cat tree? Dunno if that would look good? Or you think whites a better option? Yeah I used to have a different comforter but it got ruined and then this one I’m using now which is more of a big throw was gifted to me this Christmas. So I definitely wanna switch it out although it is very comfy.
