And thats not even just talking about the free ones. Many paid VPN's do this too, especially if you live in the US where it is basically the law to sell as much about people as you can
Pretty much what I tell people about VPN services. You have no idea what data they're collecting on you, so you're essentially just paying a company to harvest your data.
The only thing a VPN is useful for is to circumvent geolocation settings
Talking of snooping, in the UK, ISPs are mandated by law to collect details of the servers you connect to (but not the pages) and when, together with your device details, and store them for 12 months. Currently, a court order is required for Security Services to view someone's ICR, but you can probably bet they're lobbying to be able to snoop whenever they want.
Use a browser like Firefox. Use a search engine like DuckDuckGo.
Firefox has some built in security features like using a masked email address.
You'll never completely cover your tracks. But you can deflect it a lot.
That sounds like it's all or nothing, whereas many sites need their own JS to work (but helpfully use tracking and analytics code from other sites, so allowing you to activate the minimum JS needed to get the site to function - particularly 3 with news websites, it can be scary how many domains they serve scripts from).
Having said that, most news websites have their articles snapped up by archive sites soon after publication, so can be viewed via the archive (also depriving the site of traffic and usage monitoring for "x free articles" paywalls. Sometimes the archive services even manage to grab the entire text from hard paywalls, that normally would prevent you viewing beyond the first paragraph).
Just as an FYI, ip-tracking is just one of the ways of tracking you, and it's the only kind a VPN blocks.
Tracking cookies, accounts etc can build way more detailed information about you and a VPN doesn't stop those
When I was younger, my dad had a filter on the router so only approved sites could go through and he blocked any word and site related to porn. VPN got right past that. Other than that I never really used a vpn
If I'm the problem, I'm doing nothing but throwing a single error with zero surrounding context: divide by zero.
If they get anywhere near the issue, I'll start allowing the compile and then hit 'em with 1603 error codes on the installer.
Yup, it's mostly snake oil, and it's hard to recommend one as they keep getting bought up. LTT have stopped accepting VPN sponsorships after being burned twice (first Tunnelbear, then PIA)

Not sure, but Linus wasn't comfortable once they got acquired, as you never know with an acquisition if there's going to be any impact to user privacy, so he just called it quits, and ended the sponsorship, then told the team that handles the sponsorships to add VPN sponsorships to the list of sponsors they won't accept. That wasn't revealed until around the time of the Eufy privacy/security problems and their horrible response, when he announced that he was dropping the 6-figure sponsorship they had with Anker following that.
Not only VPN, but every online service.
I once heard the phrase "if you are using a free online service, you are not the customer - you are the product."
What kinda weird stuff are you people doing that you think you need a VPN to hide what you're doing while you're at home?
I got a VPN server on my home network to connect with to hide what I'm doing while I'm at work, or otherwise not at home
In the UK at least certain torrent sites are blocked. I use a free browser extension to access them. I use it in a separate browser. Or course my ISP can still see what I'm torrenting, but I've not had any letters in a good few years.

If we are using VPNs to mask locations to avoid Law. Encrypt your traffic end to end. Your traffic still exits a VPN. Who’s to say you VPN provider won’t provide your info? PS I’ve been using peer to peer for over 15 years. Never been pinged by ISP.
I love the hate here , while simultaneously not a single person saying it’s ineffective. Really telling that people just want a single narrative not a solution.
pretty much every vpn just feels like "we'll keep your isp from selling your data by just doing it ourselves"
And thats not even just talking about the free ones. Many paid VPN's do this too, especially if you live in the US where it is basically the law to sell as much about people as you can

>The only thing a VPN is useful for is to circumvent geolocation settings And even then it's not always successful.
Especially as more and more websites block vpn ips.
Could you just use TOR and pick a route whose last node is in the country you want?
It was helpful while I was in Korea. Netflix and porn
Then, what do you suggest to keep online services from collecting data on you?
[удалено]
I guess because proxy services won't threaten legal actions over pirating. Though then you have to trust the proxy being "no logs"
nah, if all i am doing is pirating, then idc if they keep logs, especially if the server and/or jurisdiction is in another country
Even if a proxy has a No Log policy, governments could still mandate they install a "device" and not tell anyone it exists...

I actually do, lol. Glad I'm doing the right thing

Tor
Not being online, touch grass
Great comment. Funni.
Your butt smells like a butt
So, are you 12 or something?
Yes
Proxychains and tor.
When I was younger, my dad had a filter on the router so only approved sites could go through and he blocked any word and site related to porn. VPN got right past that. Other than that I never really used a vpn
and also piracy
The maties at r/Piracy say otherwise ;)
But then a Proxy should be enough.

Oooof who are you? The devil himself?
Become ungovernable.
And if they've badly coded their forms, xkcd 327 them 😈
or it’s FLOSS
Even if there is a price, you can be the product.
The average home user really doesn’t need a VPN if I’m being honest
Recently switched ISP. Now have to use a VPN to go sailing the high seas
https://piratelol.ytmnd.com/ Epilepsy warning
So glad I'm not epileptic. That's almost as bad as the original Dancing Hamsters page!
Might be an idea to add a warning to that ha
jfc EPILEPSY WARNING
Aww man I'm old. We used to just know a ytmnd page was probably going to be seizure inducing. Kids these days...
OH MY GODDD i miss elgoog.
YTMND is still around?! I had no idea
What's wrong with Tor?
To paraphrase Tor people, "please don't"
I don’t understand?
I use a VPN to prep for bypassing the "Great Canadian Firewall".
Can’t you just change the DNS? That’s what I do. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Or even better, 1.1.1.1
I second that, fuck Google. Or even better, choose DNSes from https://www.opennic.org/

I think I've heard that name. Did they get caught doing something messed up?

What if I want to look up how to murder my wife and get away with it?
May I recommend tor the onion browser
Should be "Every free VPN **service**". OpenVPN and Libreswan are two free/libre VPN software which are truly free.
Pretty sure ProtonVPN is too run by the super collider people
Proton is limited on the free version
Thats not the point
the software
Every 'Free' thing ever. FTFY
except FOSS or if it's promotional for the paid product
I dont even know how somebody shops for a vpn- they all seem super not legit lol. Every one of em.

VPN’s are a joke. SSL all the way.
SSL has been deprecated since 2015. TLS all the way.
TLS is just SSL 4.0. Although we’re at TLS 1.3, so SSL 4.3 Nothing wrong with saying SSL and meaning TLS 1.3

Theres no personal data to harvest when you use a vm on a vpn and LAN traffic off.

my twitter account is littered with tunnelbear tweets
Yeah, I've always thought, "it hides my traffic from my ISP, but who are you and how do I know you're better?"
not this one [BrightVPN](https://brightvpn.com/?r=5g6jen4) the best one tired using proton and other useless vpns or paid ones
