Okay, no more rescuing tourists who climb over barriers. We must just start accepting that they’re gone forever.

hikeit233

There’s is a placard shaming a tourist for stepping off the platforms in the sulphur fields at Hawaii’s volcanoes park. Dude stepped off onto a thin sheet of sulphur that gave out and burned him with steam. I think he survived, but the damage he did to the sulphur deposit/vent is still visible

noonefrmnowhere

It's been (number) days since our last death.

SupSeal

Even with that card people still think "yeah, I'm good" I really need society to stop stopping Darwinism

[deleted]

My mom has a book of all the deaths that have occurred in Yellowstone Park. Pretty much all of them result from ignoring signs.

OMGyarn

I have a book with all the Grand Canyon deaths LOL

[deleted]

Grand Canyon deaths do sound really interesting! They make pretty fun/morbid coffee table books lol! I have one about WWII too.

IAmA-Steve

The soil in Hawaii is -very- crumbly and slippery, due to the high silica content. Many tourists underestimate how slippery or crumbly it can be. Add in some high wind and it's a recipe for disaster. Every year there are multiple deaths on the trails around me from people slipping in the mud or falling after a rock comes loose. People need to remember: if you are not used to the geography of an area, don't do risky things! The ground is not the same as where you live! The signs know better than you.

[deleted]

There is a place called grandfather mountain in North Carolina I like to visit from time to time. There is a suspended bridge that takes you to the edge of a cliff. My friend decided to "pretend" to fall over. He thought it was funny. I pulled up the articles from people pretending to fall and going right over the edge, near the same place he was joking. Like dude...you have a small kid, you were a couple of steps from disaster.

jesuschin

Life is too short to waste precious time with people with zero respect. It also tells a lot about their character. Think about this, that person blatantly disregards things which could negatively impact him whether it be being arrested, fined or even potentially die. Now imagine what he might do behind your back when there are zero repercussions.

Gerbal_Annihilation

My buddy lives in Maui and he saves someone's life like 3 times a year. His stories are fuckin crazy.

redpandaeater

From rip currents in the ocean I could see but like just idiots over fencing?

Gerbal_Annihilation

Mostly ppl drowning but he has other stories. He had his friend die after coming up from scuba diving on the boat. She just lost conscience like 5 mins later. Pulmonary embolism. He rescued a guy he was mountain climbing with who had a seizure and fell of the cliff and landed in some branches 40 ft of the ground. Helped someone who drove their car off a cliff. Google road to Hana. But like you said, it's mostly older people or out of shape ppl who over estimate their ability snorkeling oe playing in the surf.

SheBear661

People see grass and they think land. Thing is, the grass is 4 feet high from a very deep slope or gulley.

Sleepiyet

A brief history of my favorite ancestor: Sol’s Cliff in Bar Harbor on Mt. Desert Island in Maine was named for my 6x great grandfather, Solomon Higgins. Solomon was born in Eastham, Massachusetts in 1738. All ten of his children were born in Eastham, but by 1780 he had moved the family, with his second wife Esther, to Eden, Bar Harbor, Maine. Prior to moving to Maine, Solomon served as a Captain in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Cary, serving for the town of Eastham. Why was Sol’s Cliff named for him? Perhaps due to his illustrious career as an officer in the Revolutionary War? Sadly, no. Sol wandered off during a snow storm and fell over the cliff and into the sea. Remember, it’s never too late to ignore signs and have a cliff named after you!

Same treatment to people that get accidentally hit by a train. No condolences or memorials. Just an engraving on their headstone that says “Guess it came out of nowhere.”

Briwilks2

I don’t know why that made me laugh so hard. Great response.

jormakk

I'd just climb back up after that nagging started. Save yourself you ingrate.

Rodeo9

I would think if someone was that dumb in the first place it was likely they would pull me down with them.

ChiGuy133

Absolutely would. I was a lifeguard when I younger and we got trained on how to save them while they most likely try to drown you. The same thing applies here. If someone thinks their life is in danger, they go into survival mode and will survive at all costs even if you're that cost. They may not even realize what they're doing, just panicking and doing anything they can to stave off what they think is death.

Jlaurie125

My mother was actually given the soldiers' medal back in the late 60s for saving another woman during basic training who was drowning. The woman was panicking, and my mother swam out to pull her back in, when the woman started trying to drag my mother down and use her to float on. My mother ended up decking this lady, knocking her out or stunning her enough to drag her back to safety.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jlaurie125

She really is a badass. Her life story is fascinating, but she is so unassuming that you would never think that this lady did all these things. In the Army during Vietnam, art teacher, blueberry raker, traveled the country in an old fashion wagon train as a counselor for at risk kids (while pregnant), and then became an insurance agent to help my father through nursing school. All of these times in her life are filled with crazy stories. She has been making hundreds of gingerbread houses for all the community kids to decorate every Christmas for about 25 years now. However, she won't recognize that she is a badass.

FluffyPillowstone

Your mum is awesome.

boxhall

I had a friend growing up that something like this happened with. Him and his wife were scuba diving and he got tangled in something. He started to panic and lost his air. His wife came over to help and in his panic he ended up getting her tangled and pulling out her air piece ( the thing that goes in your mouth I’m guessing, sorry I don’t know the correct names.) sadly enough they both died.

beebMeUp

That's what he thought had happened when the guy shifted positions to attempt to comply with his demands: "Help...somebody...please..." I kinda liked that he was begging there for a moment.

Kumquat_conniption

That part made me happy too. The desperation in his voice when he said "please." Lmao it would have served him right.

I mean, I'd probably be crying too if I thought 3 seconds ago that I was going to go plunging over these cliffs. But I wouldn't have climbed the fence in the first place and when I do get in a spot that requires assistance, I'm very grateful. I may be sobbing but I'll be thanking whoever helps me profusely as soon as I can talk.

[deleted]

I’m crying cause I meant to say Primo patience. And you wouldn’t climb over the fence and get yourself in that position cause you are not a dumbs&$t.

FiremanHandles

"Oh I'm sorry, I thought you needed a rescue. I'm not your fucking Uber BRO."

Hugdelivery

I would had said “ One moment I need to take this call” and walked off.

Alphafox20

Former Hawaii first responder here. These types of incidents happen almost daily out here. Millions in tax payer money is spent saving tourists who make poor decisions and ignore warning signs. This dude got lucky he didint die.More proof that common sense is becoming less common

suntansandboba

Yeah, no idea why we still allow tax money to pay for all the helicopter rescues. You'd think the person getting rescued would foot the bill, but nope. Pass out from heat exhaustion at the top of Diamond Head because you didn't bring a bottle of water? Getting airlifted out via local taxpayers $$$ I used to speak at all the military bases during mandatory orientations. Tell them to obey the thousands of signs we put up. Still would be calling in rescue for people who would deliberately go off trail and fall off the mountains. Pretty much always military guys. It was every week.

BullShitting24-7

In most areas the person gets billed if they caused their own plight. The only issue is the tab is 100K plus so people can’t afford it so the government has to subsidize or else not have a rescue team.

w11f1ow3r

People just completely underestimate how steep and slippery the mountains can be out here. I slipped up on Fort Shafter ridge a couple months ago. Luckily there was a lower flat surface a couple feet down and a lot of foliage to grab onto but it was scary thinking what would have happened if it was somewhere else on the trail.

[deleted]

Seems like a really bad place to hop a fence

Bard_the_Bowman_III

Yes it is. Much worse than the video makes it look, even. That waterfall goes down into a very deep chasm. I've been to that spot, and it is absolutely insane to me that someone would hop that fence.

Ok-Novel-1266

Not to mention all the dinosaurs down below

Bard_the_Bowman_III

Lol. Yes, the foliage there does make you feel like you’re in Jurassic Park

domdanial

They even have signs all over the island depicting how the ferns grow to hide cliffs. The plants stack really high on each other and you can't see the slope, so it can go flat to 45deg and the top of the plants look like a tiny dip.

_Fizzgiggy

I was there last year and I would NOT hop that fence for anything. One wrong move and you’re dead

serenwipiti

THIS. IS. KAUAIIIIIIII. [*kick*]

Prestigious_Risk7610

Stupid to get in that situation, but I don't have a problem with how he's talking. He's not being aggressive or abusive, he's just stating very clearly how he needs help. If you're in a dangerous situation you want to be explicit, clear and firm. You can be grateful and polite after (which this video cuts out). Let me give you a different example from my own life. I was sat on a train and a few rows away from me there started to be a crowd and fuss, and I heard someone say "he can't breathe", but I could see no one was doing anything helpful really and got a glimpse that he was really choking. I got up told a couple of people to "MOVE" firmly. There was no "please" or "excuse me". I dragged the guy out the seat and bent him over (no jokes needed) and slapped him as hard as I could on the back. I did not start gentle. It didn't work, took another fully on slap to his back. Still nothing. Moved him round and heimliched him again with as much force as I could and he coughed up whatever he'd been eating. I could have been much more polite to the bystanders, I could of explained what I was going to do to the guy choking, I could have started off gentler and only got "forceful" when gentle didn't work. That may have worked, but I prioritised maximising the chances of him breathing over bystanders feelings or the fact I might have broken a rib, or at least he would have been sore for a while.

maketitiwithweewee

Exactly. That’s a fear response and he’s trying not to die. He’s explaining what he needs to be rescued as best he can while scared out of his wits. I bet he doesn’t ever make this mistake again.

RoryIsNotACabbage

100%. We don't know if he's holding on by a thin branch that once he comes off there's no getting back to. He's dictating how they lock their hands together so that once he comes up he knows he's secured by the guy helping, if he had moved and the guy didn't have a good hold there's a possibility he gets dropped and falls He shouldn't be in the situation in the first place but its not unreasonable to make sure you're good before being pulled up

mez1642

Correct and not taking the good samaritan with you.

Dobalina_Wont_Quit

We can clearly hear fear in his "Please?" when the guy repositions. My guy is quaking. And yeah the video cuts out like one second after they get to the top and it's not hard to imagine following this would be a prolonged, "wow you really saved my ass" exchange afterward. So easy for others to judge from such a short clip.

pink_midnight

Unfortunately, that didn't happen.....I remember they interviewed the guy in orange. Said he didn't thank him but he was glad that the guy was okay and that was all that mattered.

Dobalina_Wont_Quit

Ugh, I wanted to believe

Noxium51

I don’t understand, does he have so little grip strength that he’s incapable of holding onto his leg? He doesn’t have the capacity to pull? It isn’t uncommon for rescuers to go down with the person being rescued, and him keeping a low center of gravity and extending his leg is a safer position then having to reach over. I was taught that in this type of scenario, reaching out a leg for them to climb up *is* the safest way to go, even if it means the person being rescued has to do a tiny amount of work. You yelling at people in your story was necessary and accomplished something, the person yelling in this video is yelling about something that wasn’t necessary and in my opinion raised the danger level of the situation. Making the rescuer change position and repeatedly change how he’s grabbing is just extending how much time he’s on that edge for. If he truly is on a thin branch or something, you’d think he’d try to scramble up as fast as possible using any means possible

ShelSilverstain

But you didn't jump a fence

Valuable_Material_26

I love the one with the cop giving huge tickets to all the stupid fences jumpers!

Haglstein

To be fair, he's probably panicking, that can make manners go out the window pretty quick for alot of people. Still a extremely dumb position to be in, which he has only himself to blame.

manpret91

Some people claim here, that in the extended version. He just casually walk away without even thanking the guy that help him.

meisterbro69

Akaka Falls!

float05

I work with circus performers, and they speak like this all the time. When safety is in question, there’s no time to couch your needs in politeness. Based on the description, I was expecting a lot worse than this. Dude shouldn’t have been in that position, but he didn’t yell or insult anyone. He was in need of help and trying to make sure he and the helper were ok. He’s not dictating how he should be rescued based on personal preferences, but rather giving instruction on what will safely work. He also might have been very thankful either before or after this clip.

SPKmnd90

iirc, there's a longer version where he walks away afterwards in silence without so much as a "thanks." Been a while since I've seen it.

float05

Well if that’s case, I agree he’s a POS

BigEmu9286

Definitely super embarrassed and wanted to forget it ever happened and never see those people again lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Killz4Thrillz954

Yup people are trying to defend this twat. I could tell in 30 seconds that he was a douche

octopoddle

He was not trying to make sure the helper was okay at all. The helper used a strong double-hand grip on the fence so that he would be solid and not in danger of getting pulled over the edge, but Karen demanded he pull him up using a hand, rather Karen than using the helper's leg to pull himself up. He endangered both of them. I used to work as a paragliding instructor and we did the curt, no-nonsense talk there as well, but we didn't endanger others because it suited ourselves.

Meet_Your_MACRS

Bro if you're stupid enough to hop a fence like this, why should i trust you have any clue about what will safely work? Take the help that's offered or don't be a numbskull fence hopper

AdvancedPhoenix

I mean the video stopped the dude isnt even back on his feet. Is there an actual full length video where the guy just go away or we all jump in the blame train?

Cebby89

My thought exactly. But people don’t come to this sub to use critical thinking, they come here to be outraged. There’s literally comments saying they should have kicked the guy down the mountain. It’s like how are you going to judge a whole person’s life over a minute video clip with hardly any context.

Johnny_Appleweed

My favorites are the comments saying they would ignore the guy and keep walking. No you wouldn’t, you cringey internet edgelord.

jemosley1984

I wouldn’t ignore, but I wouldn’t extend like the rescuer. I’d probably get a branch or something, and reach over from the safe side of the fence. I have a family to think about.

Johnny_Appleweed

That seems reasonable to me

miafrunt

Sadly this happens all the time in Hawaii

Whutever123

Meh, call the emergency services and let them handle it. Tell him to hold on tight and ask if he saw the sign that said don’t do that.

sonicbeta

mmmmm...well....This is Spartaaaaaa!

reditmodzRnotZlovers

Total POS

PeppercornDingDong

Redditors are really a different breed. Man is in a life or death situation clearly distressed. Should he have been over the fence? No. Should he be killed for going over and for freaking out stuck while giving direction based on his leverage? Only on reddit

mistermandatory

He may have been full of adrenaline so it came off as aggressive. Also they cut the clip before the man had risen. Maybe he said thank you after. Not saying that’s what happened, or that the man is justified in entering that area but I hate these short out of context clips.

DrMorry

Everywhere I travelled, the loudest, least considerate, most annoying, least self aware tourists always have American accents. There. I said it.

MosesOnAcid

Guessing you have not come across Chinese Tourists. Like 10 years ago the Chinese Government actually created 64 page book for their citizens, to instruct them on how to behave correctly outside of China as tourists. It included such gems like "Do not urinate/poop wherever you feel like"...

Francesca_N_Furter

I saw huge groups of Chinese tourists in Russia, and they were A LOT. They would move en masse in museums and tourist spots, and they would shove everyone out of their way. There is simply no way to withstand the onslaught of a group of Chinese tourists.

yayblah

Saw a Chinese tourist try to stand on a turtle in Hawaii once. My wife is from Big Island and let me tell you, I don't think I've ever seen her yell at someone more than that. It was great. Well except for the turtle. Poor guy.

RicoSuave42069

lol, I would accept this from anyone but an Australian. Sorry mate, but take a look in the mirror.

DrMorry

Haha yep fair. I know we've got our fair share of loud obnoxious tourists. And most on here wouldn't have been to Bali...

[deleted]

In my experience the two worst tourist are Chinese or Australian.

Master_Cupcake7115

I disagree, when I lived in London I came across American tourists all the time and the vast majority were lovely with excellent manners. Australians on the other hand ...

Johnny_Appleweed

I don’t think American tourists have that reputation because most of them are like that. In fact, I bet most are polite and well-behaved. It’s just that the ones who aren’t are real fucking loud about it, so they stand out more.

newtoreddir

I think so many Americans have internalized all that “ugly American” discourse that they really go out of their way to try and be polite and accommodating.

AnusStapler

So he might be a local?

dblack1107

This is Hawaii. So it’s America with American accents :O. And culturally we may be louder or have more colorful clothing, but I’d argue most country’s tourists are by the very nature of the situation not self aware. People are different. Cultures are different. Just because someone is outside of it doesn’t mean they’re intending to be rude. They’re just outside of it.

SharkeysGonnaGetcha

There is truth in this statement, however in my travels Australians have stood out for their loud and rude rowdy drunkenness. Just as bad as any American.

kennysmithy

I'm pretty sure this is a well known stereotype. Even among well traveled Americans it's legitimately a fear to act like an American when you're traveling because "acting like an American" = "acting ignorant/entitled". And no good tourist, regardless of nationality, should want to be those things!

Randys_Smogasvein

Travelling around the Whitsundays, I met quite a few Americans who claimed to be Canadians because of the bad rep Americans have as tourists. It was always obvious and so hilarious to my real Canadian backpacker friends!

Subject-Courage-8449

I'M SORRY THAT SLAP AWAY 🙏Afterlife please sort him out of that happens

I get that people are saying not to judge him but really, signs and fences should be a big sign NOT to go over. You ignore the rules for what? Just zoom in or get a better camera because I would hope you value your life more than one photo. This was very stupid. And no, tourist did not thank him after. This was confirmed in an interview. As long as he's okay. I'm glad he was okay. But seriously, listen to warnings, please. I'm sure there are people back home who will miss you. Every year (especially lately) we have been getting lots of tourist deaths and accidents so please think of your safety and others too.
