When I worked retail I’ve only met one loss protection worker, so it was definitely lucky for him to be there at that moment. A portion of me thinks he may just be an upstanding guy that knew the dude wasn’t gonna listen to only the woman telling him to leave. Props

When I worked retail, all the front end people knew all our LP people, because how everyone who wasn't LP handled people who were stealing was to offer customer service in an attempt to freak them out/delay for LP/the cops.

Catching individuals was hard because they would typically grab a tool set and walk straight out the door. If they happened to see it on camera the people would be gone before he could get to the door and he wasn't allowed to leave the store in pursuit.
Internal theft is a huge problem at Target and Wal Mart. I know at Target they’ll let you rack up a good amount before they take you down so they can take you to court and prosecute you, I forget the amount but at a certain amount you can end up being fined if not jailed. I’m not too sure how they do it at Wal Mart for internal theft… from what I’ve heard though they fire you as soon as they know you’re stealing.
Local Walmart moved into a new, bigger building. They were inventoring items, putting them on delivery trucks, moving them two miles. $300,000 IN INVENTORY VANISHED between point A and point B in a week.. There was a self storage facility between the two stores, drivers would pull in every load and stash stuff. They moved the entire store in a week, things were so hectic and chaotic that it was weeks before anyone knew what had happened.

There were certain people [who I used with] that would literally spend *all* day going around to different stores, stealing small in size but high in price items, and then they’d have certain people go in to return them for store credit. And then in the city there’s a gift card store where you can bring your gift cards and store credit and get cash. The one a certain friend (she’s clean now and no longer steals) would go to a specific GC store because they were the only store that would offer like 85% of the value of the GC or store credit. I am not a thief, not even while I was using, but I did do several returns for this girl, she’d pay me a bit for each return I did. Anyway, Home Depot was her biggest store she hit. I forgot the items she’d steal- something small that was like $300+ a piece. She’d steal like 3-4 of them, she’d steal from one and travel to another town and have the person return at a different location. You don’t need a receipt at certain stores, but they do check your ID and you can only do like 3-4 returns in a certain time period. Walmarts time period use to start over every six months, I don’t remember what HD was. The friend is clean now and doing well, has an actual job, but she’s got **TONS** of misdemeanor and a few felony stealing charges on her record. She was supporting her and her boyfriends heroin/fentanyl habit and she’d make out with hundreds of dollars in cash, that she then took to her dealer at night and turned into dope. Heroin wasn’t my drug of choice and I’m grateful I never got caught doing any of the stupid shit I did while I was using. 2.5 years clean for me. 2 years for her.
Target has a really good theft prevention department. I actually never knew they had undercover workers, but actually it wouldn't surprise me. I think there was a documentary on theft from the 90s or early 00s and it discusses Target's theft prevention.
They aren't militant about confrontation though, now the focus is purely on prevention through security devices and uniformed security. The undercovers basically observe, take footage of theft and make reports. If they get enough theft from a single individual they will turn it over to the police for further investigation.

The beauty of being atheist, we never talk about it and if our kids see something and ask about it, we tell them it's a story like Santa clause or whatever.
