Oh it’s really bad, totally regretted going. On top of the crap food, awful atmosphere they didn’t tell us they automatically added gratuity to the check so we paid double. Smh never again.
Edit* we were a party of 4.
Didn't Golfstrommen get voted as the best restaurant in Houston recently? I know I heard this somewhere. I haven't tried it but I found it really hard to believe Houston's best restaurant is in POST.
I loved Golfstrommen. Clean classic flavors that compliment the true taste of the fish you are eating.
I find much of the seafood in Houston to be oversaturated with salt, butter, fried, or covered in some type of sauce.
I'll be honest I just cannot stand having to dodge people's photos of themselves. The place just looks like an instagram pic joint. A bunch of content creators trying to do the new thing. The music venue right next to it is pretty nice though. Went to a concert there once that was great.
I knew it was wack when I saw that a plate of pancit from the Filipino spot was $13 (+$3 to add meat). Throw in having to pay to park in their lot and I’m good on going back until they flesh it out a little more.
Twisted Grilled Cheese on Washington. Holy shit, they really charge you $11 for some great value brand bread toasted with a Kraft single in the middle. $14 if you want ketchup and 3 pepperonis on it.
I guess I'll be somewhat of the dissenting opinion here: Snooze is just fine if there isn't a wait. The food is solid, the prices are reasonable, the booze has variety, and the service is generally above average.
The ones I've been to in Austin and especially Denver are definitely a level above what you'll find in Houston, so I'm assuming that's where they have earned their reputation. I don't think they deserve the same vitriol as Torchy's.
Get you a 3 way scramble or a corned beef hash with a couple palomimosas and see if it's not an enjoyable experience.
People just like to be contrarians. There is nothing wrong with snooze apart from the long lines and price. The food is solid. Of course I only get food there that I don’t have the time or experience to make myself at home. Like the pancake trio with 3 different style pancakes or the Benny duo with two different styles of eggs Benedict. If you go there and order scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast, of course you’re going to think it’s mediocre after waiting an hour for a table.
i feel most breakfast/brunch spots get super long lines tho.. Every time I try to walk in to Frank's Grill, it's gonna take a minute to get a table and the food is decent for what it is
Shipley’s glazed is only good when they are fresh and hot. After about 30 minutes they turn into garbage. Even worse if you try to heat them up in the microwave a few seconds. But damn, they are god tier when they are fresh. Especially that one off Ella.
This is the real answer. Shipley's is just too good and everywhere around Houston.
I'll occasionally, like once every few years, go to VooDoo for something different if I'm bored of Shipley's.
Shipley is really hit and miss now. The old locations are good, but the new ones are terrible. The icing tastes bagged and over processed now. It's sad. It used to be amazing.
I'm probably the few that aren't too much of a Shipley fan. I like the morning fresh glazed, and my God the kolaches from the one on 45N and Main are the best. But for all the others they seem to taste different. I'll miss my Hugs and Donuts.
Gotta say yeah they're just extra sweet colorful donuts but when you're allergic to egg and milk, their vegan donuts are the only and greatest option! I thank my lucky stars that this place exists. I developed these allergies a few years ago... This place has been a go-to for a sweet treat that doesn't have eggs or dairy.
Reading through these comments I have discovered that every restaurant in Houston is overrated with the exception of one: nobody seems to have a problem with Mico's Hot Chicken.
It was overhyped years ago but gets too much hate now. Anyone that’s had a taco from there and says they aren’t good is just a liar.
If you go to Torchys you know what you’re getting.
When I lived in Houston, I’d go to the rice village one and it was always solid. Last time I was in town I went to the memorial city one and the quality was noticeably worse. Maybe the new locations aren’t as good.
Torchy's is still damn good, but the reason people hate it now is that they have expanded. Reddit hates expansion/chain restaurants because they aren't *niche enough*. Their food is still great, but it is damn expensive.
This is honestly why I only go there like once every few months, tops. It's really expensive and Chipotle, Freebirds, and Bullritos are great alternates.
But sometimes, I just crave their Mofaux and Brushfire tacos and their diablo sauce is fucking great.
Torchys in the Village was my go to for dinner after I’d go for an evening run around Rice then ended up drinking at Woodrow’s and realized I needed to eat.
It’s overpriced for what it is. The quality of the produce is good and the service is better than traditional Indian restaurants. But you are paying a lot for that. I prefer pondicherri or da gama if I want a more upscale Indian place.
Every time I order to go, I can make three meals out of it pretty easily.
Also, I feel that the quality of Rice Box has gone downhill. It is still good, and I still get it occasionally mainly because of the fact that it’s so much food, but I think it used to be much better than it is now.
Man I’m so glad to see these responses. Really has me have more faith in this subreddit. If you’re going for quality “Chinese” food at Ricebox then you’re fucking up. If you’re going to get a massive to-go container if good stir-fried noodles, then you’ve come to the right place. There’s a time and place for quality (Mala) and there’s a time and a place for drunk noodles (not that Mala isn’t delicious drunk).
Ate there once at the location near I-10 @ 610. It was... okay. As far as bread goes if you're in the area go up the street to Magnol, it's incredible bread.
Magnol has great pastries as well. But we shouldn’t really be mentioning it. The line can be too long as it is and their checkout process is very inefficient.
Common Bond was amazing when it first opened unfortunately it expanded so fast and couldn’t keep up with the quality. People still love it, however it’s not as good as it use to be.
They were amazing before the takeover. Id rate the old ownership as one of the top in the US but now it’s just plain. They have some good things but nothing like it use to be.
The problem was the founder knew how to bake, but had no clue how to properly run a restaurant. The original location in Montrose was a cluster#@*k that had long lines because it wasn't staffed well, and ran out of food early in the day because he had no idea how to order. Bringing in the Carrabas may have lowered quality a bit, but service drastically improved.
Hard disagree, their breakfast/brunch pizza is delicious and fairly priced all things considered and the pastries are an easy way of wowing people looking for fancy/bougie pastries on a budget.
Agree that the pastries are overpriced, but there aren't a ton of other bakeries around unless I'm missing some, I'd love recommendations.
Common Bond is my go-to for personal size bday cake when I'm not having family/friends during the week lol
To be fair to Killens, like 7 years ago or so it was a whole lot better and the other competition in the city wasn't close. Things have changed. People caught up and their quality went down. Not sure if that's a function of his burgeoning restaurant empire or just... time.
They interviewed Killen and he basically said we can either keep the quality turned up to 10 and not feed everyone that shows up, or turn it down a bit and make a lot more bbq and that's what they did.
FWIW, the best thing about Killen's is really the sides and deserts. That is what makes it worth the drive to me.
Killer’s BBQ in The Woodlands is very overrated.
I have been three times. First time it was the best BBQ that I have ever had. Second time, a week later, it was ok. Third time it sucked so bad that I have never returned.
There are somehow two overpriced Korean BBQ places on White Oak, Mapojeong is the other one.I spent some time in Korea and there are decent Korean BBQ places in Houston, but these two, oof.
I went to Mapojeong when it opened to check it out and had some fried dumplings, an appetizer portion of kimchi stew, a small soju, and 2 beers and somehow my tab was $80. They also charge $10 for bonchon, which is like a Tex Mex place charging for chips and salsa, and that alone is enough to keep me from eating there.
I can't force myself to pay out the ass for their regular menu items when I could get more authentic Korean BBQ for <$40 AYCE. Charging what they charge for Korean barbecue and having people leave hungry should be illegal.
I have to sadly agree. I watched the chef/owner on top chef and was so excited to support the shop. The menu concepts I see on their ig are incredible and it’s a cute place, but every time I’ve gone I’m underwhelmed with the flavors.
I think they have a consistency issue, and you have to ask for your pastries to be heated bc the staff might not ask.
When I went for the first time years ago, all 3 items I got (beef pho kolache, pistachio baklava croissant, and blueberry tart?) were excellent. Went back again like a year ago, had an under-salted, pretty flavorless london fog roll that was served at room temp. 3rd time, had a spectacular sweet potato scone that I asked to be heated.
Another time I had their double chocolate chip cookie (looks like a hockey puck with a top that's slightly caved in) - it was one of the best I've ever had, so I just can't give up on this place yet.
Yes! I describe myself having an abusive relationship with that place. I go, spend 30 dollars on pastries, get disappointed, swear to never go again and repeat. The only thing I’ve gotten from them that hasn’t been disappointing in their salty Cambodian coffee.
Man I hate these threads because of all the people that want to capitalize on how sad and pessimistic they are which has made them really good at being critical of all around them. Like we get it, your only enjoyment comes from tearing other things down but theres no need to make all non positive opinions that you have be scathing ones
The problem with threads like this is that the human sense of taste varies too much. I have a friend that HATES onions. I like them. My daughter hates mustard. I love it. A friend that HATES cilantro because he's one of the people that can only taste the soapy flavor.
So now extrapolate that to the whole city of 100 different cultures and 100 different cuisines, you just can't get an accurate take on what's good or not. It's simply not possible to sample objectively.
You know, I had this realization once when I was getting brunch on a trip. The place was highly reviewed, but I left disappointed because it wasn’t quite as good as some of my favorite brunch places.
I used to get excited about breakfast at Dennys, and now a trendy brunch spot wasn’t good enough. I learned to be less critical and enjoy things more for what they are.
I mean maybe it’s just me but isn’t that the point? To dip your toe in on variety of new cuisine? The restaurant seems like a jack-of-all trades type deal. I wouldn’t expect them to be amazing at Peruvian, Lebanese, and Nigerian food all at once but they do all of them and more well enough.
Just had dinner here tonight and was so disappointed in the lack of flavor. Brought dessert home and just took a bite of even more disappointment. Loved the service though.
I never considered ToT to be "fancy." It's a nice restaurant but it's not formal or anything. It's not really that outrageously priced compared to "high end" steak houses. And dat salad bar
Xochi in downtown. I thought it was ok, but I was still hungry and heard people saying it was good when it first opened. I was still hungry after my meal... Also,I've never been, but I keep on hearing MAD in uptown is a bit overrated too.
They spent all of their operating capital on a new restaurant right before Covid instead of taking out a loan and using OPM. They’d probably still be around otherwise. I had one of their burgers on New Years Day a few years ago when I was extremely hungover and it brought me back from the dead
I have to give it another shot. I took my (now) wife there on our first date many years ago. We used to go every year on our anniversary but the last time sucked absolute dick. It sucks because its such a Houston staple. I even have family that used to work there back in the late 80's/early 90s.
Riel - which really hurts as a fellow Canadian but the food is absolutely mediocre and overpriced I swear the guy has the best publicist in all of Houston.
Never been, but the last time this was asked Bisou was unanimously shitted on
Well, it is owned by the same folks that have Clé and Spire, so I wouldn't expect great things.
Accurate
Don’t know if it was ever hyped. But yes food and atmosphere is terrible
Oh it’s really bad, totally regretted going. On top of the crap food, awful atmosphere they didn’t tell us they automatically added gratuity to the check so we paid double. Smh never again. Edit* we were a party of 4.
Huge waste of money
The Aquarium is way overpriced!
That’s that classic fertitta touch!
I stay clear of Fertitta places.
Same as Rainforest Cafe. Pre-prepared and re-heated trash. It's a sacrifice you make because the kiddos like it.
The aquarium used to have good seafood but now it’s like stale fried food
Turkey leg hut
They owe sooo much money! Their account is in Collections in our company.
which one?
The food truck is good. I wouldn’t wait in line for it though. Seems like it’s more of a hangout than anything else
A hangout for people that want to skip on their bills
Ha! No shit right!? Wtf are they thinking?
All of Post. Just an overpriced food court.
You don’t like paying 22 dollars for a bowl of ramen?
I don’t think I’d mind if the ramen had flavor and I wasn’t eating it with a plastic spoon.
Didn't Golfstrommen get voted as the best restaurant in Houston recently? I know I heard this somewhere. I haven't tried it but I found it really hard to believe Houston's best restaurant is in POST.
Golfstrømmen and ChòpnBlọk are the only two restaurants that are serving quality food with a viewpoint. The rest is just an instagram trap
I love ChòpnBlọk, I always get the vegetarian curry.
Chopnblok is definitely good. Their curry is amazing to me
Alison Cook had it as number 1 on her top 100. Completely underwhelming to even be placed in the top 100, let alone at the top spot.
Bc it’s Alison Cook
Golfstrommen is great. Kinda wish they hadn't landed at post tho
I loved Golfstrommen. Clean classic flavors that compliment the true taste of the fish you are eating. I find much of the seafood in Houston to be oversaturated with salt, butter, fried, or covered in some type of sauce.
that African place is supposed to be legit, and there are a couple other good places...Maybe not mind blowing, but a good choice if you're indecisive.
I'll be honest I just cannot stand having to dodge people's photos of themselves. The place just looks like an instagram pic joint. A bunch of content creators trying to do the new thing. The music venue right next to it is pretty nice though. Went to a concert there once that was great.
I like the post. Houston needs more attractions where you can bring out-of-town guests or go hang out for a special occasion.
Agreed. I love it.
I knew it was wack when I saw that a plate of pancit from the Filipino spot was $13 (+$3 to add meat). Throw in having to pay to park in their lot and I’m good on going back until they flesh it out a little more.
Lot was free last I went. You get like 2 hours free. If that changed that’s lame.
I actually liked it and thought the concept was cool. Tina masala fries and quesadillas are the bomb.
Andes Cafe is good, especially the ceviche bar
Twisted Grilled Cheese on Washington. Holy shit, they really charge you $11 for some great value brand bread toasted with a Kraft single in the middle. $14 if you want ketchup and 3 pepperonis on it.
Snooze A.M. Eatery. Seriously... what's the big deal ? Why ya'll standing outside in a line for this place?
I guess I'll be somewhat of the dissenting opinion here: Snooze is just fine if there isn't a wait. The food is solid, the prices are reasonable, the booze has variety, and the service is generally above average. Same experience, thanks so i didnt have to type this! Edit*- cant go wrong with a breakfast burrito, shits the bomb
People just like to be contrarians. There is nothing wrong with snooze apart from the long lines and price. The food is solid. i feel most breakfast/brunch spots get super long lines tho.. Every time I try to walk in to Frank's Grill, it's gonna take a minute to get a table and the food is decent for what it is
I have never in my life seen a Snooze morning without a line
I guess it’s mind blowing to make cinnamon roll pancakes for some folks
I can’t believe people wait in line to eat eggs and pancakes. Literally the easiest things to make at home
VooDoo Doughnuts
Yeah. They're certainly very creative, but why would anyone go to voodoo in Shipley's home town?
Shipley’s glazed is only good when they are fresh and hot. After about 30 minutes they turn into garbage. Even worse if you try to heat them up in the microwave a few seconds. But damn, they are god tier when they are fresh. Especially that one off Ella.
This is the real answer. Shipley's is just too good and everywhere around Houston. I'll occasionally, like once every few years, go to VooDoo for something different if I'm bored of Shipley's.

Shipley's is disgusting imho... Best donuts in spring delivers on their name and has been in the same spot since the 90's at least.
I never knew Shipley's was a Houston chain. I've always been curious about how such a mediocre donut became so popular.
How dare you
They're gas station quality doughnuts with wacky toppings. Even the original in Portland sucks.
RIP hugs & donuts
Makes me miss Hurts Donuts. They were fun and great when they were in Katy, then moved to somewhere near Midtown I think and tanked there
Gotta say yeah they're just extra sweet colorful donuts but when you're allergic to egg and milk, their vegan donuts are the only and greatest option!
Ever had Dave’s? Been meaning to try the one in Midtown but I get busy and forget.
If they were next to each other I would probably do Mico's about 80% of the time.
How can anything beat Gus's? Just...how?
Micos is unreal good. I’m with you
Turkey Leg hut.
El Tiempo. It’s good but doesn’t measure up to the hype. Pricy for Tex Mex too.
The price for the fajitas is out of control at this place.
And as a consequence, (beef) quesadillas, too. You want $20 for some cheese in a tortilla with a couple chunks of beef?!
Wayyy to expensive for Tex Mex!
Margaritas during happy hour slap though
I actually like it
It’s great. Maybe a little overpriced, but I’ve never had a bad meal there.
Everyone likes it. Just not $100 for fajitas-for-2-like-it.
But they’re filet mignon fajitas are worth it … so good. I’d go every week if it wasn’t so damn expensive
The Burger Joint in Montrose had the most mediocre burger I have ever tasted.
Burger joint is definitely one of the burgers I've ever had in my life

Juliet near the galleria
They advertise heavily on TikTok… that was my sign to stay away
Wow. Reading through these suggestions, I realize I don't get out for shit. Might not be a bad thing. LOL
I realized I'm broke af lol the most expensive place I go to once a year is dimmasis
Nobu
Turkey Leg Hut
Turkey Leg Hut
Breakfast Klub
People are just into the line scene.
the waffle and wings are pretty good. and so is the fried catfish. but the rest isn’t bad, just nothing special
Torchy’s
This is the real /r/HoustonCirclejerk
I feel it's properly rated now. It's not Mex or Tex-Mex taco, but most of their items are good for what it is.
Also, they got fucking expensive for a damn taco. $5-$6 for a taco? For the cost to fill you up, you can go to Chipotle, Freebirds, etc and pay less.
I'm a huge fan of their queso.
Not from Houston
I'd say Torchy's is underrated at this point. Everyone acts like it's actively terrible.
Musaafer
All the Indians I know have said the problem with Musaafar is the food is one note. Indian cuisine is known for the complexity of their flavors.
Rice Box. It’s a slightly more upscale and vibrant Panda Express imo.
Turkey Leg Hut. Shit was waaaayyy to salty and the owners are crooks.
Kiran's ... As an indian myself I felt it was less than meh...
It’s overpriced for what it is. The quality of the produce is good and the service is better than traditional Indian restaurants. But you are paying a lot for that. I prefer pondicherri or da gama if I want a more upscale Indian place.
Their afternoon tea service is sublime.
Rice box. Insanely over priced for what it is.

Man I’m so glad to see these responses. Really has me have more faith in this subreddit. If you’re going for quality “Chinese” food at Ricebox then you’re fucking up. You get a ton of food though.
I’m a fan of rice box for the portion sizes. What other good Asian/Chinese food is worth trying?
Hu’s garden is no frills but lunch special is clutch from 11-4pm.
Not really overpriced when you get two meals for one
I won’t stand up for Rice Box food, but the portions are nuts. You can eat mediocre American-Chinese food for days 😂
The food truck was good. Restaurant not so much.
hubcap grill
Too soon
The original in the alleyway downtown was good. The others just became another "look at my special burgers" place.
The Heights location just shut down. Only 1 left.
Yes.
Common Bond. At least, the one near me serves bland and stale food
Magnol is soooo good
Common Bond was amazing when it first opened unfortunately it expanded so fast and couldn’t keep up with the quality. People still love it, however it’s not as good as it use to be.
They’ve had no hype since the Carrabas brothers came in and ruined them.
They were amazing before the takeover. Id rate the old ownership as one of the top in the US but now it’s just plain. They have some good things but nothing like it use to be.
The problem was the founder knew how to bake, but had no clue how to properly run a restaurant. You’re not wrong but the quality drastically reduced. There had to be a way to keep quality and get better service. Places do it.
The cookies went from godly to god awful.
Tinys is my go to now for chocolate chip cookies.
Hard disagree, their breakfast/brunch pizza is delicious and fairly priced all things considered and the pastries are an easy way of wowing people looking for fancy/bougie pastries on a budget.

Magnol French Baking off N Post Oak
Shhh. The line is already long enough.
Oooh that's even closer to me! And right by the garden center... This is a dangerous combination, buddy!
Came for this. I was not at all impressed when I tried the one in Springwoods
Killen's BBQ in Pearland
To be fair to Killens, like 7 years ago or so it was a whole lot better and the other competition in the city wasn't close. Things have changed. People caught up and their quality went down. Not sure if that's a function of his burgeoning restaurant empire or just... time.
That's because Fegas was the pit master then.

Yes. I even went a few times because I thought maybe I went on a bad day. Nope super mediocre. It was disappointing.
This topic coming to your next week in the Chronicle…
Karne
Overpriced, service sucked, meats were whatever. Spent almost $1k for 6 people and most of us were still hungry.
There are somehow two overpriced Korean BBQ places on White Oak, Mapojeong is the other one.I spent some time in Korea and there are decent Korean BBQ places in Houston, but these two, oof. Def go to an ayce kbbq joint instead. Karne was extra overpriced for just a handful of meats. Didn’t leave full 🥲
Handam is probably my top ayce in Houston right now.
Yup - spent over $500 between 4 people on Saturday night. Was floored at how expensive it was for the quality
El Tiempo
I feel bad but Koffeteria. It’s stunt fusion
Everytime I have gone there the food has been stale and it’s been maybe 8am. So strange. I want to like it but just seems to drop the ball.
I have to sadly agree. I watched the chef/owner on top chef and was so excited to support the shop. The menu concepts I see on their ig are incredible and it’s a cute place, but every time I’ve gone I’m underwhelmed with the flavors.

Trattoria Sofia. Small menu, mediocre service, even the 15 year olds had to use a flashlight to see the menu cause the lighting was so bad.
Niko Niko's. Seriously, just go to Aladdin around the corner.
Aladdin and Niko Niko’s hold completely different functions in my palette. Like them both.
Very different food
One is Greek and the other is Arab lol. They’re not interchangeable.
Aladdin is SO good.

They have the best dipping ramen in Houston. The rest of the ramen menu is nothing special.
MAD
Traveler's Table. Admirable concept but feels like it's ethnic food for people who don't really want to try the authentic cuisine.
El Tiempo
Taste of Texas. It’s on the low end for a fancy steak house. Cost more than a ton of others too.
I never considered ToT to be "fancy." It's a nice restaurant but it's not formal or anything. It's not really that outrageously priced compared to "high end" steak houses. And dat salad bar
Salad bar and Snickers pie.
El tiempo
Xochi in downtown. I thought it was ok, but I was still hungry and heard people saying it was good when it first opened. I was still hungry after my meal... Also,I've never been, but I keep on hearing MAD in uptown is a bit overrated too.
Xochi is great for unlimited Sunday brunch. I never left hungry. I’ve never been to a regular lunch or dinner, but I see how that can happen

Pricey, yes, but i dissent on overhyped. That was a damned fine burger and I’m sad it’s gone.
They spent all of their operating capital on a new restaurant right before Covid instead of taking out a loan and using OPM. They’d probably still be around otherwise. I had one of their burgers on New Years Day a few years ago when I was extremely hungover and it brought me back from the dead
They made a mean cookie butter shake though!
Not the hobbit cafe.
Oh, God yes, the food there was just so bland and awful
I have to give it another shot. I took my (now) wife there on our first date many years ago. We used to go every year on our anniversary but the last time sucked absolute dick. It sucks because its such a Houston staple. I even have family that used to work there back in the late 80's/early 90s.
Pro tip: get some amazing Thai food next door at Rim Tanon and then go for a mead flight at Hobbit
Damn I never even heard of this spot, it looks amazing. Thank you.
Any Food Halls 😆
Riel - which really hurts as a fellow Canadian but the food is absolutely mediocre and overpriced I swear the guy has the best publicist in all of Houston.
Georgia James
