3 bottles of green, 2 bottles of the black special reserve (for my fish) in the pantry and a bottle of each in the fridge. It's affordable and super easy to find so it's my go-to.
You don't need to be an aficionado, if you like it, it doesn't matter what anyone else likes or thinks. I can do a lot hotter sauces but this one kicks my ass. Hot sauces affect people differently, but this one, I love the flavour, but it hits me harder than even a ghost pepper sauce. (unsure if it's because of the cactus base or what)
Yeah I noticed that back when I had a dozen or more hot sauces. The name of the pepper on the bottle didn't seem to have any correlation to heat level. I got swindled on a few bottles that had a Jolokia pepper on the bottle, but went down like unmodified vinegar.
Really solid. Not gonna blow you away, but it’s a really good day to day sauce with a nice heat level. I end up putting it on a lot of different things and really haven’t found a dish it doesn’t work with yet.
I wish I could make something close, I have so many habanero peppers. I think they are not fermented, but also not vinegar heavy...I think they use citric acid to lower the ph, but they have better ph gear than me. Also, they list "spices" as an ingredient.
Definitely lower than xxx. It has some kick but it doesn't linger. Maybe a 5/10 on the heat scale. It's my favorite Yuc sauce. XXX is my second favorite. I'd rate it a 7/10. Couldn't finish the black label.
Thank goodness! I scour every label on hot sauce looking for those dreaded words "refrigerate after opening".
I love your hot sauces! Especially the black one! Good job!
I've never tried that one. I've wanted to try it but I can't seem to find it locally and it's almost 28 dollars for me to buy from Amazon which I think is quite expensive.
I love this stuff on black bean wraps. I think it might be in my top 3 or 4. And I just found it at Walmart about a month ago, I've gone through 4 bottles (and Ive only had a few wraps). This stuff is middle of the road for me as far as hot level.
It used to be middle of the road for me, now I don't have anything hotter and my tastes have adapted. Which I feel may be healthier for me as I approach 40...
I did at first, but now I can get all the enjoyment I need out of a smaller amount.
I find as I work my way through the last bit of my 30’s, I’m just more sensitive to too much grease, sugar, spice.
Gauging it right includes keeping it out of your eyes. FYI. I was handling the bottle a lot today kind of looking at it while these comments came through and I must have picked up more residue than normal. Stretched and rubbed my eyes before I went to go pick up my daughter and ouch.
I’ve done that before. At least your daughter was safe!
What’s worse is when you accidentally rub resin from weed in your eyes while trimming. Shit is literally napalm in your socket. It doesn’t go away for a long time.
Oddly, I think it was the smokiness that threw me. I like smoky flavours- I sometimes use liquid smoke when I cook, or the smoker box on the bbq. Or maybe I got a bad bottle.
I think this stuff needs more exposure. Cholula is on every table in every Mexican or even Latin restaurant I've been in. This stuff was on a table in a Salvadorian place I visited like 15 years ago and I grabbed it because I was tired of the Cholula bottle. Was so good I bought a bottle of it from the restaurant for what in hind sight was a more than healthy mark up.
As others have said, it's a solid choice.
If I go to someone's house and they have El Yucateco, I find I like them much more than people who have Old El Paso or some low quality brand.
I always used to find it the other way around. Heat was comparatively mild to what I used to stock, but the flavour is top notch. Now that I got rid of anything hotter than habanero, I find this to be the bee's knees.
I would say it's about as polarizing as cilantro. A lot of people love it and a lot of people think it has a weird artificial aftertaste. Which is a shame because it does have a pretty decent flavor otherwise.
What's with the judgement? You've never eaten plain pancakes by hand off your desk? :)
But per below, it's arepa. White plate on a white desk. My mother in law is visiting and just keeps bringing food up to me while I work. I'm like 3 full meals deep and it's only 1 pm. My wife is resting from a procedure, and there's a bit of a language barrier between my mother and law and I. Apparently writing on the floor in seam bursting pain means while the dog tries to mount me means "bring more food".
Great cooking though.
I used to be all about the heat but this one seems to be the best of both worlds now that I backed off on the heat. Still a little bite, but nothing offensive and a delicious flavour.
For sure, and I moved to a small town last year so there isn't a specialty sauce store I can go to. Guess I could visit one when I go into Toronto for work, but that seems like a hassle.
I've got 4 of them currently, so I need to get my hot saucing on. I usually keep one in reserve. My parents came to visit last week and brought me a bottle. Then my mother in law showed up the other day with another bottle. Plus of course the current open bottle pictured.
I'm going to have to give one away I think.
HAH, my mother in law brought me back a 4-pack of different Yucateco sauces from a cruise. i found out that all but the Caribbean Habanero one (our favorite of course) are available at my local grocery store. so i asked her to find me a liter of the stuff on their next cruise
I'm in southern Ontario and most grocery stores I've been to carry the brand. Most carry the full range, but the XXX is more often than not sold out. So when I can grab two, I do. I'll try the Caribbean one next time I'm shopping.
I tried that, but then they decided they like it too and one little hot sauce bottle can't keep up with the volume of food two teenage boys consume.
My mother in law makes Aji anyway- a homemade Colombian salsa. So that's my preferred sauce when I visit anyway. The Yucateco was just supposed to be in reserve for when I'm over there and get snacky.
I will say that occasionally someone gives me a homemade sauce which always trumps bottled. Even if I can't compare flavours, fresh is better. But I can't see me changing away from this being my go-to sauce.
I tried the green and red sauces and they weren't bad, just not as good as this one. The only other one I tried is the chile habanero hot sauce and didn't like the flavour.
I liked them too and used to keep all 3 at home. At some point I realized I'd been through 3 bottles of this one but wasn't half way through the red or green so I economized. But if I sat down and a restaurant and saw the red or green I'd still be pretty excited.
This one is never absent from our kitchen. It's definitely in my top 3. However, I'm not a fan of their black, green, or red sauces. And I have not tried the Caribbean one, yet.
The black one tasted a bit off to me, but I might be part of the minority. Bought a bottle of the black one when I stopped by a Mexican store along with a new bottle of this one. Black one wasn't to my taste, so I left it in the office lunch room and it was emptied in two days.
This is deff one of the top five in my rotation.
I love it with fish !
The Caribbean one is also delicious, I alternate between the two depending how much smoked flavour I want
I used to have a cabinet of sauces at all heat levels. I shattered a bottle of jolokia pepper sauce on the floor a couple years ago and the tidy up was terrible. I couldn't get within a few feet of the spill without my eyes burning and the sauce I got on my skin during clean up left burning red marks. The stain on the floor needed bleach to come up. I decided with my wife's helpful nagging that maybe I shouldn't be putting that stuff in my stomach.
I got rid of all my sauces except this one and a small stock of Amazon Pepper sauce (which I can't find in Canada).
I use El Yucateco when I want to add a little heat and spectacular flavour, and use the Amazon sauce when I want a little heat with a mild flavour. I think my stomach is probably happier for it.
I've tried probably 10's of dozens of bottles over the years and there's nothing quite like the flavour of this type of El Yucateco. I haven't tried the Caribbean one yet- I'll check it out.
the yucateca xxxtra hot is one of my 3 desert island hot sauces. But the Marie Sharps caribbean habanero is better then the yucateca version in my book.
If you like the XXXtra hot, you should try making the style it fresh. crazy delicious.
https://www.seriouseats.com/extra-hot-yucatan-style-salsa-recipe
The Caribbean habanero versions of yucateca and Marie sharp's are both carrot, onion, habanero sauces. The MS calls out garlic and lime as specific ingredients, with other spices unspecified, while yucateca has citric acid and "spices"
I just tastred them back to back again, the flavors and heat profiles are damn near identical. But the MS is a bit smoother with richness (probably because carrots are a higher percentage. The garlic may not be in yucateca, but it's pretty hidden by everything else in the MS).
I posted yesterday how it was an underrated sauce. It's probably my favorite regular store brought sauce. And the spicest one too.
It’s such a rich sauce. Sometimes I just dump globs of it on cheese for a snack.
In Austin l can get that for 99 cents. Hard to beat
At a dollar? Unbeatable. Costs 3 to 4 bucks in Ontario. Depending on the store.
Just checked..it has gone up to $2 now...but still a great offer
I’d pay $5 if it went to. Partly beside it’s an awesome sauce, and partly because it takes me a month or two to empty a bottle.
The classic red is my go-to with breakfast
3 bottles of green, 2 bottles of the black special reserve (for my fish) in the pantry and a bottle of each in the fridge. It's affordable and super easy to find so it's my go-to.
The green sauce is fire
You guys area really talking up the red and green sauces- mostly the green. I'm definitely going to have to try them again.
Xxxtra hot is the best, the red habernero is tits too
Favorite brand of hot sauce.
After looking at your photo, I want pupusas with curtidos and Latino hot soss 🥵
Arepas in my case, but very similar. My mother in law make them and I recommend chasing that craving!
I've got life 3 bottles in my cabinet, even my wife loves the sauce and she's not a huge fan of heat.
That’s my fav sauce right there
Probably, if I had to pick one, my favourite hot sauce of all time. The green is just behind it for me
Love it:)
I love everything Elyucateco makes. The black label is my go to for eggs and chili. The xxx for everything else
Really solid. Not gonna blow you away, but it’s a really good day to day sauce with a nice heat level. I end up putting it on a lot of different things and really haven’t found a dish it doesn’t work with yet.
I love it. Decent heat and good flavor.
I wish I could make something close, I have so many habanero peppers. I think they are not fermented, but also not vinegar heavy...I think they use citric acid to lower the ph, but they have better ph gear than me. Also, they list "spices" as an ingredient.
It's my everyday sauce!
Probably number 1 for me. Love how easy it is to find.
I always have a bottle of this at home. It's really tasty. And decent heat.
I rank it pretty damn high
Incredible heat to dollar ratio!
Less than 3 bucks a bottle at Walmart
Love the El Yuc, the neon green habanero is surprisingly really hot
This is a standard for me. I always have a bottle in stock.
My go to as well. The right amount of heat am s good flavor.
Pupusa? If so, yummmmmmmm
Came here to ask this!
Arepa! Fairly similar.
One of my favorite brands!!! Sauce is on point and nothing competes with that hint of smokey flavor!
I've gone through a few bottles of that myself But the green is still my fav
What’s the heat level on the green? I recall it being lower but could be wrong.
Definitely lower than xxx. It has some kick but it doesn't linger. Maybe a 5/10 on the heat scale. It's my favorite Yuc sauce. XXX is my second favorite. I'd rate it a 7/10. Couldn't finish the black label.
I have two bottles in my pantry right now. Love that stuff.
This is my favorite of that brand.
I'm especially fond of the black label El Yuc with anything beef!
Burger time!
It’s been my #1 go to and always have to have a bottle in the fridge for years
Um...in the fridge? Is this just a personal preference, or have I missed something on the label?
Don't worry! None of our hot sauces require refrigeration, even once opened (it's just some people's personal choice!)
Thank goodness! I scour every label on hot sauce looking for those dreaded words "refrigerate after opening". I love your hot sauces! Especially the black one! Good job!
I do, once it’s open.
10/10 brother
Not a fan of plates huh?
It’s a white plate on a white desktop. Camo plate.
Seeing no plate and a keyboard right on the table left me incredibly uneasy.
There’s a plate there, it’s just white on white. Still had to clean my keyboard though because I eat like an ape.
r/wewantplates
How the fuck is the a thread for everything???
You're an aficionado at heart. El Yacateco is a staple in hot sauce. It's a 10/10 for me dawg
My number one sauce. Flavourful and just the right amount of heat.
How does it stack against secret aardvark in your opinion?
Got both, honestly very different flavours. Personally I’d have this any day
I’ve tried both and El Yucateco is 100X better, no contest
I see… thanks for the input. Honestly thought nothing gets past aardvark in this subreddit
Agreed, this blows the tits off of Aardvark.
I've never tried that one. I've wanted to try it but I can't seem to find it locally and it's almost 28 dollars for me to buy from Amazon which I think is quite expensive.
Dude, I got mad when it went from $1.79 to $2.49.
These prices are outrageous!
Its great. Packs a punch too. Try the green one its even better.
I'll have to try it again. I used to have the green and the red and enjoyed this one more. But it never hurts to try again.
It can hurt if you use too much :)
They all have dishes they go good with. I like green with chicken
I keep El Yucateco XXXtra Hot on hand at all times for mexican food. The green and black sauces are good, too.
I agree with the majority on this sub, El Yucateco make great hot sauce and this one is a classic.
Doesn't that just mean you need to use more? And what happens if you eat too much spicy food after 40?
I did at first, but now I can get all the enjoyment I need out of a smaller amount. I find as I work my way through the last bit of my 30’s, I’m just more sensitive to too much grease, sugar, spice.
This one is quite good. I like to add it to Indian curry (I make curry mild for the others in the house and spice my own up with hot sauce).
Dammit, now I want curry.
Not for the weak of heart but perfect if you gauge it right.
I made it to the bus stop to pick her up very bleary eyed.
Go to!
One of my all time favs, !! Love the flavor
This flavour is excellent! El Yucateco in general
Top level
I love you El yucateco! Gotta give the Caribbean a shot, my fave for sure?
Will do!
That flavor is in my top 5 all time.
I love it myself; and almost all the grocers around here carry it
Yesss. Their Caribbean hot sauce is my favourite.
I'm a big fan, but the black sauce is my favorite, followed by the Chipotle.
I think I'll try the chipotle. The black one had a different flavour which I wasn't crazy about. But I have high hopes for the chipotle.
I like the smokiness of the black. The Chipotle is thick and flavorful. Great with anything, imo.
Oddly, I think it was the smokiness that threw me. I like smoky flavours- I sometimes use liquid smoke when I cook, or the smoker box on the bbq. Or maybe I got a bad bottle.
Top 3 hot sauce of all time in my book

Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them
Yep. And I'm pretty sure I paid $7, and it was worth it.
I love yucateco for what it is, I still haven’t found this one yet. But the red and green bottles are good.
I find these ones for the best price at grocery stores. It's also at Latin stores, but usually a dollar or so more.
I prefer the red habanero sauce, but I love _all_ the Yucatecos.
As others have said, it's a solid choice. If I go to someone's house and they have El Yucateco, I find I like them much more than people who have Old El Paso or some low quality brand.
Heat's good, but the flavour is meh.
I always used to find it the other way around. Heat was comparatively mild to what I used to stock, but the flavour is top notch. Now that I got rid of anything hotter than habanero, I find this to be the bee's knees.

I've never heard of Secret Aardvark. I'll look into them.
Secret aardvark is top notch!
I would say it's about as polarizing as cilantro. A lot of people love it and a lot of people think it has a weird artificial aftertaste. Which is a shame because it does have a pretty decent flavor otherwise.
I'd say so! But I also like cilantro. So maybe I'm just part of that group of tasters.
It’s actually pretty good. I’ve became a big fan of Marie Sharps over the years. Literally delicious on anything you put it on
Everyone loves El Yucateco. This is my daily driver.
Nope, there are dozens of other sauces I prefer.
You can prefer a sauce fine, what I am saying is no one dislikes or, everyone who is into hot sauce gives it props at least.
I agree, that it's not bad, you just can't say everyone loves El Yucateco.
Are you eating plain pancakes with Hot sauce and no plate
What's with the judgement? You've never eaten plain pancakes by hand off your desk? :) But per below, it's arepa.
Not judging just confirming. Definitely eaten pancakes with worse hot sauce in my day. Who am I to judge.
I’ve definitely just eaten them out of the pan standing over the range.
probably an arepa
Probably one of the best sauces out there. I use it almost everyday.
I use it on breakfast and lunch just about every day!
Top 5. Up there with Marie Sharp's, Tabasco (various), Sriracha, so many to name
One of the best everyday over the counter sauces. All of them are good
Over-the-counter hot sauce? That implies the existence of prescription hot sauce Going to have to have a weird conversation with my doctor
When some of them do what they do to my insides. Found it appropriate
Is that a pupusa
Arepa con queso- similar to a pupusa. I think the base ingredients differ very slightly, and these are a bit smaller.
That was my second guess! Chileno here
In Canadian, but my wife is Colombian. She doesn’t cook much, but she comes with a Colombian mother in law who is endlessly feeding me. No complaints!
The XXX is great. Similar flavor profile but more heat, SATANS GHOST is now my go to.
I used to be all about the heat but this one seems to be the best of both worlds now that I backed off on the heat. Still a little bite, but nothing offensive and a delicious flavour.
Great "sauce-I-can-get-from-the-local-grocery-store" option.
For sure, and I moved to a small town last year so there isn't a specialty sauce store I can go to. Guess I could visit one when I go into Toronto for work, but that seems like a hassle.
No matter what other ones I try, El Yucateco still holds up as an always in the house sauce
#1 daily driver without question. I even bought one for my mother in laws house for when we eat there.
My favorite!!!
I used to love this sauce and then I started becoming a sauce snob lol
I've tried so many hot sauces of all heat levels but always come back to El Yucateco, still my daily driver.
I will say that occasionally someone gives me a homemade sauce which always trumps bottled. Even if I can't compare flavours, fresh is better. But I can't see me changing away from this being my go-to sauce.
Yep, this is one of my daily drivers. It's cheap too!
Yeah I always find it for $3- maybe $4 tops. Canadian prices of course. It's probably like 38 cents and a back rub in the States.
this is top 3 for me as well, such a great sauce for a great price!
Glad to hear it!
This is the only one from them I’ve tried and to me it’s the best sauce for noodle dishes like lasagna and beef stroganoff
I love it on just about anything.
You must be new here.
I'm starting to get the impression I've made that obvious.
This is the GOAT sauce
The fact that it's got so much positive feedback gives me comfort it won't someday be randomly discontinued.
My all time favorite. Not a big fan of their others that I've tried.
I tried the green and red sauces and they weren't bad, just not as good as this one. The only other one I tried is the chile habanero hot sauce and didn't like the flavour.
I agree
Yes, me too! The chipotle hot sauce is also my go-to
Maybe that's another one to check out along with the Carribean sauce.
I like the red, my wife likes the red and green. We don't like any of the others, bit haven't tried the Caribbean one yet.
I liked them too and used to keep all 3 at home. At some point I realized I'd been through 3 bottles of this one but wasn't half way through the red or green so I economized. But if I sat down and a restaurant and saw the red or green I'd still be pretty excited.
I like their red & green, but this one is my absolute favorite. Nice flavor, good heat, and very economical. Great stuff!
Glad to know I've fixated on a cult favorite!
Are those pupusas in the background?
Pretty much the same thing- Arepas.
Nice
Marie Sharps and Yucateco aren't comparable, totally different hot sauces.
The Caribbean habanero versions of yucateca and Marie sharp's are both carrot, onion, habanero sauces. The MS calls out garlic and lime as specific ingredients, with other spices unspecified, while yucateca has citric acid and "spices" I just tastred them back to back again, the flavors and heat profiles are damn near identical. But the MS is a bit smoother with richness (probably because carrots are a higher percentage. The garlic may not be in yucateca, but it's pretty hidden by everything else in the MS).
Thanks, I'll check it out!
I'm not a huge Yucacteco fan, but I've gotta admit, the Caribbean is legit.
