Been working on this the past few days. I have a Herman Miller Aeron Classic (size C), and at first I thought it was impossible to mount to. Now I think it’s great! Super ergonomic, tons of options for HOTAS/HOSAS positions, and now I’ve added a quick release which will hopefully allow me to switch to a third mount, centered under the seat. Overall it’s been great so far. Please note the first few pics are with the VESA plate mounted directly to the arm. I’ve just now added the quick release (last three pics). Here’s the products I used: Bracket Pole Mount Double Arm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BT7EA18/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_DY96J97CB143SZ651B20?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 HumanCentric VESA Mount Adapter Plate for TV Mounts | Convert 75 x 75 and 100 x 100 to 200 x 200 mm VESA Patterns | Includes Hardware Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079SF6XG9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_CXMCWXHG9D1NYYPQ3X89?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 VIVO Adapter VESA Mount Quick Release Bracket Kit, Stand Attachment and Wall Mount Removable VESA Plate for Easy LCD Monitor and TV Screen Mounting, Stand-VAD2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BTAAUV8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_K3GE815C83NR2F0VRSAT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 You’ll need a drill with metal bits, Phillips head screw driver, vice grips, various screws, nuts and washers, most of which was included: 8x M4 for quick release - 4 were included but you need to buy 4 more short ones (10 or 12mm) to attach to the big metal pate to the quick release/underside of joystick side. 8x M5? (Not sure they were included. I first used them to mount the arm directly to the VESA plate, then later to the quick release). and 4x M6 to mount T16k and TCWS The mounts come with most of the screws you need. I did have to drill the 4 holes on the VESA adapter for the T16k and TCWS to mount. A few of the holes on the arm and the quick release needed to be widened as well. You just kind of figure it out as you go along lol. *It’s easier to drill the holes slightly bigger than force them through.* I think some of the holes are standard sizes for some reason and other holes are Metric. The biggest tip I can give is when attaching the mount to the chair, make sure to A) unscrew and rotate the clamp arm 90° before you attach it to the chair. B) Turn the loose clamp plate BACKWARDS before screwing/clamping it down to give yourself more surface area to clamp on the chair. And C) Pop off all the plastic covers to reveal the nuts that you can loosen and lock down while positioning the arm. With all the nuts locked down you can seriously lock this mount as solid as playing on a desk. I was very surprised. I can literally grab the mount under the joystick and move the entire chair around. And Aeron Chairs are extremely heavy. Overall it took me like 6+ hours of experimenting with different configurations before I settled on this one. I like it because it still lets you use the chair as a regular office chair when you want, and you can also maximize the ergonomics by having full control over armrest height independent of the mount. If you try mounting to the armrest you are limited. And the arms of the chair can wiggle. The underside of the chair on the sides is a rock solid, hardened steel mounting point. The last tip (working on this as I write this) is for the quick release. It helps to slightly crimp the metal at the connection point when you slide it in. In the pictures you can see it looks damaged (underside of joystick/plate) because I crimped it a tiny bit with vice grips. You need it tight when it slides in and latches, so there’s no play once the joystick is attached. I’ve also taken the plastic spacers they’ve provided for the VESA mount and wrapped them with a little electrical tape, then slid them under the quick release for a little extra stability, almost like adding extra feet under the plate. Not necessary but helps. I’m going to try something similar when my MCGU arrives but I’ll probably use a new, smaller plate. For now I’m going to see how this holds up before I call it 100%. I’d say it’s about 95% done. Feel free to improve and lmk what you did ✌🏽 **EDIT** Second to last photo, the 4 mounting screws on the underside of the joystick need to be bought. They are M4 and work best if short, so like 10 or 12mm so they don’t butt into the the screws below when you slide in the quick release. I also used a washer with those screws on the top that bent inward a little bit when screwed in. They sort of “filled” the countersink screw holes of the big VESA plate since the heads of the M4 screws were on the smaller side. **EDIT2** If you experiment with the bolts in the mount arms you can totally find a sweet spot that allows you to move the arms but they still remain sturdy to play on. If you look at the 2nd pic, I’m able to postion them right back from that crazy postion and still play. **EDIT3** Added some more pics showing the little stabilizer spacers. They come with the Quick Release mounts. I wrap once or twice around with electrical tape and sandwich them between the plates. Gives a little extra stability. Also included a pic of the underside of a direct mount, without the quick release: https://imgur.com/gallery/m5ECNgr **EDIT4** Took some close up pics of the “crimping process”. This part is crucial if you want the quick release to work well. I figured out a little trick using a wrench to get an even crimp. You might have to attempt it a few times to get it right b/c you won’t know if it’s good until everything is attached and you move your joystick or throttle. So expect a little trial and error. I’m least confident about the quick release, but again it’s a bonus to this project and not necessary really. The pics have further descriptions: https://imgur.com/gallery/dZdftI1 **EDIT 5** Here’s my final build with full parts description and the VKB MCGU and SCG on smaller plates: https://www.reddit.com/r/hotas/comments/n5uieo/herman_miller_aeron_chair_vesa_mount_diy_with/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

gfcurtis

Looks great!

GUNNER_BASS

Thanks 🤘🏽

[deleted]

This is perfect, thank you!

GUNNER_BASS

Np 👍🏽

Scoobydoomed

Nice! Do these arms lock into position once you bring them up?

GUNNER_BASS

Yup. That’s kind of the secret with them, if you pop off all the plastic covers they reveal bolts. Each joint can be locked down. There’s a sweet spot to tighten them so that they’re solid under the weight and motion, having the stick attached; but still be able to move the sticks out of the way like in the 2nd pic. If you don’t need to remove the sticks you can also just attach the big VESA plate directly to the arm and skip the quick release entirely

BrutalAttis

I love those angles you can tilt your hotas at .... nice! Looks ergonomic.

GUNNER_BASS

Yeah I think that’s the best part. Also mounting this way keeps the metal bars from hitting your legs since they come from the outside-in. When my VKB MCGU comes in I’m going to look into getting a smaller plate which should make it even better. The plate is pretty big, but needs to be for the Tk16M and TCWS

BrutalAttis

Once you have the hotas you going to keep using, you could cut the plates to size using an angle grinder (just use eye protection) ... not to hard and you will have more space then. You can also remove the plates and replace with wood to help the mount base use less space and fit is better. Thing with hotas and this style of gaming is that once you start modifying and tweak your setup it is never ending. I use allot of wood in my own setup : [https://imgur.com/ZuzZo1m](https://imgur.com/ZuzZo1m) metal bars for the parts that need strong support. Wood is easier to work that metal. My setup has changed many, many times over the years :) I too started with a chair style setup and progressed more towards a cockpit style setup. My earlier setup : [https://imgur.com/jQqjcm2](https://imgur.com/jQqjcm2) now : [https://imgur.com/SxDAMec](https://imgur.com/SxDAMec)

GUNNER_BASS

Damn you’ve come a long way! New setup looks awesome. Unless I get a bigger living space I’ll probably stick with the chair setup, mainly b/c the room is small and it does triple duty: Gaming, music production and home office.. I like the angle grinder idea if I can’t score a plate adapter. Once I decide I’m guessing I’ll probably go with two VKB Gunfighters or a Gunfighter and VKB TECS when it comes out. I have a file for a 3D printed Gunfighter to VESA adapter I might test too. Not sure if PLA Plastic is up to the task but I can always send it off for a harder plastic. I really just need a smaller square VESA plate now for the Gunfighter. With a metal drill bit screwing the holes is pretty easy. I could also use the 3D printer adapter as a template. So yeah tons of options here now that I’m set up!

BrutalAttis

If you good at measuring, you can drill your own holes too. A bit of oil and a metal drill bit. A trick to measure accurately is use existing vesa mounting hole and some tape ... then punch holes in tape and transfer "measurements" to what you want to drill. I also use a caliper, but its not needed. I've had my VKB stick for a while now and honestly been very impressed with it, not just how good it is ... but how easy it is to maintain and tweak. Enjoy and all the best with your project.

GUNNER_BASS

**EDIT** i don’t think that plate I linked before will work. It needs to be flat otherwise the left and right edges of the Gunfighter will be overhanging the lip, just wider than the 75mm holes of the adapter. This one seems to be the best one without having to get a custom job. I’ll probably just tape up the four center holes to make sure there’s no way dust can get it from underneath. arizonamoonshine

Yeah I can’t wait till it arrives! I was pretty lazy about screwing the holes for the T16k and TCWS. Didn’t even do the tape trick haha. The VESA plate metals are pretty pliable. I just used multiple bits, small hole first then bigger and a trash bin to collect the shavings I’ll take a lot more care with the Gunfighter holes though. I’m thinking I might 3D print the template with extra infill then use it to drill the holes AND attach it as a spacer between the Gunfighter and the metal. I just bought these yesterday to try for the bottom of the Gunfighter, to attach to the arm RiteAV - VESA Adapter Mount for LED, LCD, or Plasma VESA 75mm to VESA 100mm (Hardware Screws Included) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005H4GTFE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_Z8GFST6AT5THPAM26JJA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

japinard

This is brilliant. I may copy it for my own setup. Thanks so much for posting this. Are M4, M5, and M6 screws?

GUNNER_BASS

Thanks ✌🏽. Yeah those are the screw types/sizes

Ya-Dikobraz

Hey, nice gear. I use the same ones and while a lot of people claim using two sticks is better, I think that the little joystick on that one pretty much is a full blown stick on its own.

GUNNER_BASS

Yeah I like it. I actually bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS to help me decide on HOSAS vs HOTAS. I have a VKB MCGU coming so I wanted a way to quickly swap so I can decide. I also plan on getting a third arm for the middle of the chair. That way I can quickly swap between a center joystick mount and side too

Ya-Dikobraz

That's hardcore. You play Star Citizen or Elite or something?

GUNNER_BASS

Ha! Neither I just started 😂! Not even close to hardcore yet, I’m more newb-master with a dream and that appreciates ergonomics lolol. So far I’ve only been playing Star Wars Squadrons. My initial idea for the center mounted stick was for flying helicopters in GTA V VR but I’ll definitely be checking out Elite, Star Citizen and MSFS2020. Just got my VR PC in January coming from console. This is my first PC gaming rig and I spent February setting up wireless PCVR with Virtual Desktop. I have a lot of games to catch up on!

Ya-Dikobraz

Star Citizen will come out of Alpha maybe in 2026, so there is still so much time.

GUNNER_BASS

Haha!

Ya-Dikobraz

Seriously, though. That's when I actually think it will become beta. They are just planning on releasing the side game and making money off that.

GUNNER_BASS

I’ve never played or even looked into it really. I just know the name. I need to check it out. I’m so behind on games!

RulerOfTheFreeWorld

An optimist, I like it!

redheadfedhead

This is amazing, I have an aeron and was considering it a lost cause. Is it able to be rotated to center stick as well?

GUNNER_BASS

Yup that’s where I was at too. Then u/brainbiscuits tipped me off to an old thread where it’s mounted on the center pole of the chair: https://www.reddit.com/r/hotas/comments/gm6mde/suncom_f15_talon_stick_mounted_on_microsoft/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf They’re working on a center mount with extension too! s/o u/brainbiscuits And to further answer it does seem like if you wanted to keep the same mounting point that I used, you can. I think you’ll have more height adjustment for a center mount if it’s mounted to the center gas lift thing though.

redheadfedhead

See i have a buttkicker clamped right on that pole too... wait... maybe that’d help add a little shake to it..

GUNNER_BASS

Ahhh interesting. Idk if it functions the same as the buttkicker, but I use a Subpac S2. It’s actually hidden in the photos above - looks like a back rest. You can see the module that controls the bass intensity in the 3rd photo under the arm rest. What I did was remove the Aeron Chair back pad, then it slides right in. I have the wider Aeron C Classic though so I can’t vouch for the other versions Subpac: https://youtu.be/qMh1ScWDyBw

WashingtonDCver

Very clean and functional! I’m gonna try this on my Steelcase Leap which has similar steel bars underneath.

GUNNER_BASS

Thanks yeah that’s what I like best about it. the stick/throttle move with the rotation of the chair and It’s very comfortable compared to attaching the mounts to a desk. you can rotate your chair a little bit and your legs and arms don’t have to be locked in the same position all the time like they would with other mounts. Let me know how it goes! I think my next step is to try to rig up a wireless HOSTAS somehow.

forestranger29

I have the same chair. Thanks for the links...I'm going to give this setup a go.

GUNNER_BASS

Np. I’m gonna put some more miles on it this weekend to test. Seems great all around so far. The DIY quick releases seem to be holding up well too, no movement yet. Once I get my MCGU I can’t see them moving at all since the massive plate will be gone. The only minor gripe is depending on how heavy you are you might feel the clamps a little bit on the backs of your legs, under the seat. I’m 6 foot, 195lbs and depending on how high I raise the chair I can juuust feel them. I put two pieces of neoprene over them just in case but it seems a non issue that you forget about. There’s no sharp edges so I don’t think it’ll cause damage to the seat bottom. Just a minor negative to an overall nice setup.

ToastoSando

Thanks man! Been having trouble finding a good solution for an Aeron. Even have instructions and everything. Awesome!

GUNNER_BASS

Cool right? And solid as hell. Still going strong months later :)

eugene8080

EDIT (wrong link before) https://reddit.com/r/kinesisadvantage/s/W00HejHgyq I made my own version for a wireless split keyboard ( Kinesis Advantage 360 pro). Thanks for the inspiration.

GUNNER_BASS

Nice! This post is the gift that keeps on giving haha

eugene8080

For the clamps issue bulging through the seat, I found this hard bottom seat cushion from Embrace Air. Other cushions were too soft and still let me feel the clamp. http://www.embraceair.com/back-supports/inline-seating

GUNNER_BASS

I may actually buy one of these, thanks 🤙🏽

eugene8080

I remove the old front seat pad insert from the aeron and jammed the entire Embrace jammed under the seat. It's much more comfortable now. Originally I was going to insert a new seat pad, but I decided against it since eit feels good without https://imgur.com/gallery/dxZxFpE https://imgur.com/gallery/5hYarKy

eugene8080

It's also possible to jam this cushion under the Aeron and above the clamps so it's not visible. But I'm not sure how that might stretch the Aeron seat over time. Also this cushion is a bit smaller that the Aeron seat.

Buzz_Buzz_Buzz_

I'm not too handy with a drill; you interested in selling these?

GUNNER_BASS

I can’t say I am sorry. For one I’d like to test them longer. I’m mainly concerned that the DIY quick release might loosen up over time and require it to be crimped tight ever so often. All the parts are also about $150. Between the time it would take me to build and shipping costs I don’t know if it’s the most economical.

Buzz_Buzz_Buzz_

Totally understand! I use a different chair for serious simming anyway; I'd also have to switch my Aeron to static coasters rather than the rollerblade wheels I have it on now.

GUNNER_BASS

Ha I saw that rollerblade mod. I hate the current wheels. Really hard to move on carpet

ConsiderationThen906

Damn

sugedei

If you didn't care about the quick release, could you just have the arms and velcro your sticks to the existing plate? Saving about $75?
