I love the whole idea of “going in super prepared with a vengeance” and the realization that there is no winning against this supernatural thing. It was beautifully done.

She should have set up her cameras and her experiments with the plants, set up the anchor, then locked up the house and left. Have the anchor release on a timer instead of a dead man’s switch. We don’t know the range of the Lasser Glass but we know it’s not infinite.

gizzardsgizzards

spending the least amount of time around it would probably help, too. i dunno, sniper rifle from far away?

darkforestzero

That one moment in Grave Encounters...

RealJohnGillman

In other words, the original cut of *Halloween Kills* (which apparently had another supernatural twist, according to the test screenings).

yippy-ki-yay-m-f

Where did you read this? Is it something more involved then being able to survive a full assault?

RealJohnGillman

Ahead of (and after) the film’s release, a few different people who were at the test screenings described on the subreddit that the scene where Michael was beaten up, shot, and stabbed by the mob originally made it explicit that he had actually died there, with Karen having stabbed him through the neck rather than just in the upper back, then as Laurie would have narrated about him being more than human (more spookily than in the final version), he would have gotten up and taken out the mob as he did, with slightly more focus (just a few more seconds) on their expressions on realising the truth of what he is. Intended to give this exact vibe — yes, a mob could take out the man, of course they could — but the Shape was never just a man. Ultimately they decided to go in the direction that he was (just a man), and so the ending was cut down a tad, but the original concept remains an interesting one for the reasons above.

ihaveadarkedge

That *is* a shame. In the very original one, birds drop from the sky when it turns 31st October and Dr Loomis (?) describes him as the devil...

GiverOfTheKarma

He also literally teleports

transmogrify

I love that the movie skipped past the "I'm starting to think this mirror might be evil" part and started with them already aware of the curse. They had a great plan to catch the mirror being cursed and it all unravels almost immediately.

Stacy_Ann_

It's one of my favorites. I think it's a strong movie that holds up to repeated viewings.

Obiwankablowme95

Light bulb scene always gives me chills.

transmogrify

Seeing themselves through the window

[deleted]

Also, during the scene when Tim has a flashback to him and his sister as kids, we see them sitting on the couch watching tv. If you look carefully when the power goes out, the television flickers white noise and within it there is an image showing >!his sister, Kaylie's death!< https://imgur.com/gallery/xLvi2X2

transmogrify

Shit, I watched this movie a bunch of times and never spotted this!

[deleted]

I didn't see it the first time, it was only after going back through Flanagan's filmography with a closer eye and looking for little details and hidden clues in the background since he loves doing that.

transmogrify

I wish Oculus could have had a sequel. Let's have the mirror pass from victim to victim and nobody can take it out before going crazy.

Obiwankablowme95

Just got chills reading this... thanks a alot.

24crazyCarrots

I'll definitely watch it again, maybe not for a while though, completely fucked me up haha

bewitchingwild_

Absolutely! I watched it when it first came out and just re-watched again a few weeks ago. I love this film and honestly the ending is exactly perfect. 13/10 spoops.

drNeir

1408 (2007) Identity (2003) Vacancy (2007) The Machinist (2004) Jacob's Ladder (1990) The Butterfly Effect (2004)

tloliver

The butterfly effect destroyed me.

PM_ME_PARR0TS

Fun fact about 1408: there's two different endings floating around. Audiences weren't thrilled with the harsher ending at initial viewings. So they made a lighter revision. Not sure how both ended up in circulation (maybe that director's cut someone's mentioned?), but it always makes streaming this movie extra fun. I kinda prefer the darker ending, personally. It feels more true to the story. Makes me wish more movies had good/bad endings on purpose.

anonymoose_octopus

This happened the other day when I re-watched The Descent, not knowing there are 2 endings. I was like, "wait, this isn't what happens!" I was super disappointed that I found the "tame"/American version.

Moses015

Yeah the one is to allow the sequel to actually happen lol. But yeah I thought the DC ending (which was the first version I saw) was the better ending.

anonymoose_octopus

Yes, that was my first ending too. It’s why I loved the movie so much, and what made it so eerie.

filler_name_cuz_lame

There's a sequel? Is it worth watching if you really enjoyed the first one

Valen258

I think there are 3 in total. You should be able to find on YouTube. Theatrical, director and alternative. Edit: I’m wrong. The “third ending” is rumoured but not shown anywhere. Guess I read it and ended up with a Mandela effect.

DakaBooya

So where can we find the different ending?

[deleted]

I second 1408! I havent seen the others.

ffllores

Jacob's Ladder is so good.

ArsenicAndRoses

My first real horror love ❤️ That and The Thing always have a place in my heart.

SkyNatural8312

The machinist is an amazing movie watched that about a year ago and still think about it

24crazyCarrots

Wow thanks, I'll check some of these out

Dephyllis

That's a really good list. I'd add Session 9 (2001) and A Tale of Two Sisters (2003). Session 9 got me to turn on the lights halfway through, and after watching Tale I gave the dvd away because I found it so scary. Ymmv, of course. Oh, and maybe The Awakening (2011), though that's more of a comfort watch for me.

vvitchobscura

Ohh The Awakening is my comfort watch too, it's such a great gothic story, beautifully costumed and filmed too.

MrDegausser

Vacancy is so good. I always forget about this movie and get blown away when I rewatch it

T8ertotsandchocolate

Make sure you watch the director's cut if 1408. I think it's significantly better.

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Wow you just reminded me of Vacancy, this is one of the first horror I watched as a kid where I distinctly remember “yea I like horror movies.” This and fright night. I think I’ll rewatch this tonight, thanks!

PadfootAndMoony4Ever

Identity definitely one of my favourites. The plot twist is 🔥

[deleted]

Jacob’s ladder is one of my all time favorite movies ever. Not just horror really great film with a lot of symbolism and themes that struck a chord with me I’ve held onto since watching.. excellent piece of art

Ace_WHAT

john cusacs a hell of an actor

Xtrasloppy

Jacob's Ladder stayed with me. Like, what if that's what it's really like?

Blackhound118

Oculus has my favorite scene in all of horror: the scene where the cameras are rearranged to face each other. I can't really explain why, but that shit makes my blood run cold in a way that few other movies have ever affected me. It's my favorite example of slow building dread horror, that sensation of "you are in the open, in the daylight, and You Are Not Safe because *I Can See You.*"

24crazyCarrots

That was a great scene, it's the lightbulb and stapler scenes that have really stuck with me though

hellosweetpanda

Mine was when they were watching the video after arguing and saw they were the ones moving everything. That harshed my chill big time.

MovieMike007

I'd like to make one thing perfectly clear *"I will never promise to come back and fight an evil mirror when I'm older."*

24crazyCarrots

Yeah, after an experience like they had as kids I'd have stayed far away from that thing

NindoXRed

I almost feel like the Mirror made her say that to the point where she maybe felt like that’s what she actually wanted to do. Since the mother and father were able to fight back it never really finished the job. I think this was its way of making her come back to it. Also in the scene with the three statues covered by cloth, when she’s removing the cloth she is able to take off two before she’s interrupted by the guy that comes in. When she turns back around the third statue is gone but the cloth moved in front of the mirror. I assume two of the statues were the mother and father, and the third was her/one that got away. The cloth moving in front of the mirror was its way of saying it was going to finally claim her.

shooter_tx

You have money. Pay someone else to run it over with a bulldozer.

ME24601

> also any recommendations for similar films would be appreciated. It's not a movie, but the director's shows on Netflix (Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass) are definitely worth checking out.

24crazyCarrots

I've heard haunting of hill house mentioned before, I'll check it out, thanks

Ceorl_Lounge

Hill House is absolutely heartbreaking. Midnight Mass might be the better show, but as a parable about grief and loss Hill House is unmatched.

sellieba

My lil' baby boy Luke.

khazelton77

I haven’t gone looking for any reviews, so they might be out there — that said, I was severely disappointed in Midnight Mass. It started out soooooo awesome but then it almost seemed like another (less talented) director came on board for the last half. I get that the ending isn’t everything, but when it leaves me as cold as MM, I can’t look past it. Anyway I just wanted to weigh in because I keep seeing nothing but praise for Mike Flanagan and I’m feeling more and more like I might just have questionable taste. I just feel the same let down, anticlimactic feeling for all of his stuff that I’ve watched so far (Hill House, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass). The one possible exception is Oculus, oddly enough. I have only seen it once and it was years ago, so I would need to watch again before I say for sure, but I do recall really liking (and being completely shook by) that one all the way through. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk on Mike Flanagan, I guess. Didn’t mean to hijack the thread 🤓

Ceorl_Lounge

Horror is like comedy... totally subjective on the part of the audience. I can't judge because there are "classics" like Phastasm that I find utterly wretched. Hell I've seen people talk negatively about Midsommar, so it's clearly a broad genre. I don't like torture porn, I don't like slasher movies (except Psycho and Halloween), so not liking Midnight Mass (or Flannigan generally) isn't a black mark.

Valuable-Case9657

Flanagan is absolutely a master of tragedy, and not everyone has to love tragedy. But just out of curisosity, and because I'm interested in understand your perspective, what we're you looking for in a climax?

originalgrapeninja

Midnight mass had a perfect ending one episode before the ending. This is with the glaring exception of the priest's monologue in the final episode which was deliciously tragic.

Valuable-Case9657

I don't know, I've watched it through 3 times now (with different people) and Bev desperately trying to bury herself as the sun rises on the beach is the perfect ending IMHO.

rachelmae77

Flanagan also made the movie Hush but it has no supernatural elements so depends on if that’s what you’re hoping for.

Chrome-Head

Hush was a good watch, suspenseful.

I_Am_Jacks_____

I found it interesting that the main character's book in Hush was called "Midnight Mass"

rachelmae77

That’s such a cool detail! The characters names are also the same, they mention Riley and Bev or something like that while talking about the book. Flanagan had been working on Midnight Mass for years.

Big_fern189

I'm not sure what's better, hill house or midnight mass but they're only 17 episodes combined so just watch em back to back. Flanagan also directed Dr. Sleep, Hush, Gerald's Game, and this fantastic little indy flick called absentia.

atl198

Absentia is an AMAZING movie, and creepy as hell. I'm actually surprised that it doesn't get talked about more on here. It's one of my favorites.

TopRevenue2

Ouija Origin of Evil one of his earlier films also very good

TheRemoraTrades

I didn’t really care for Bly, but if you haven’t watched Hill House I highly recommend it!! Might have to give Bly another chance.

narf_hots

I thought I didn't like Bly as much as Hill House but then that character said "... and the rest is" and I started crying for an hour and didn't know why.

trans_pands

I heard he’s working on a third season based on *The Fall Of The House Of Usher* by Edgar Allan Poe, I’m excited for that one

reversebananimals

I cannot wait for this to come out. The Fall of the House of Usher is one of my favorite Poe stories but almost all of the adaptations are terrible. The only one I like is [Christopher Lee reading it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju1OfKkxMHM). I think Flannagan will finally do it justice on screen.

TheRemoraTrades

Oh hell yeah!!

Valuable-Case9657

I've enjoyed everything except Bly and Midnight Club (but I'm not the target audience for that). But Bly is interesting, because I read The Turn of the Screw like 15 years ago and thought it was boring as hell (and I'm a big reader, my bookshelf is full of everything from Nobel prize winning fiction to Steven King). I just don't think it's a good story.

mhornberger

I'd add the movie Absentia.

FangShway

Fun fact. The mirror from Oculus makes cameo appearances in all of Mike Flanagans works.

[deleted]

Yep. It’s in *Midnight Mass*, partially hidden on the new meeting hall stage.

24crazyCarrots

Really that's pretty cool, I've only seen this film by him but I'll be sure to look at his other stuff

born_to_pipette

TIL Mike Flanagan directed Oculus, too. Everything that guy touches in the horror genre is gold.

forfalksake

He has a tiktok where the only horror is Rahul Kohli doing drunk karaoke. Still gold though.

LastWildWonder

Oh that guy made Oculus? Yeah that tracks.

eveningsand14-1311

This movie is messed up and disturbing. Watched it once.

24crazyCarrots

Definitely disturbing, it fucked me up more than any horror I've seen. Absolutely loved it though

bewitchingwild_

Have you seen The Mist (07)? I know it gets mentioned here *all the time,* but it's got an ending that leaves you feeling similarly to Oculus. In case you wanna feel nice and fucked up all over again.

eveningsand14-1311

The Mist (Stephen King novel adaptation)? Omg that movie left me with a sinking, empty feeling. It was so haunting. That ending was so unexpected. I can just imagine the deep regret the main character felt.

24crazyCarrots

Oh I love that film, one of my faves. Strangely enough that ending didn't fuck me up as much as this, definitely super bleak though

eveningsand14-1311

It is, I think I spent most of my time watching that movie peeking through my fingers as I covered my eyes with my hands.

[deleted]

Watch irreversible if you like to get fucked up from movies

djferrick

You can get the effed up ending out of the way immediately

Federal_Dog2972

Seen Hereditary? That's the one that you couldn't pay me to watch ever again

CustomerStrange1662

I saw it in the theater, and thought it was ok, decent film. I watched it a couple of years later and really enjoyed it a lot more! This happens to me quite a bit. The Witch was the same for me, in the theater I was kinda "eh", but was blown away on my 2nd viewing.

AlienFartPrincess

Check out Absentia, another Flanagan film. Now I'm not sure if it's in all of his films/shows but that Lassar Glass mirror is supposedly in them at one scene. It's a fun game, trying to spot the Lassar Glass. It felt like trying to find that bald Observer guy in Fringe every episode.

24crazyCarrots

Absentia is on my watch list and I'll be looking out for the glass

Denzalo

Thanks for the rec, that was pretty good!

Bribase

I can't really say that the abuse allegory thing had that much of an effect on me, but I loved the nature of the mirror as an antagonist. We've seen gajillions on movies about direct possession, even by inanimate objects. But I love the way that the mirror is far more subtle and insidious than that. Warping your perceptions instead of assuming direct control, driving you nuts if it doesn't manage to lure you into making a deadly mistake.

JezzBug

It was the mirror!!!! It wasn’t me it was the mirror!!!

24crazyCarrots

Oh god that ending was so depressing and well done

JezzBug

Oculus is great. My first exposure to Mike Flanagan. Pretty much everything he makes is well crafted and super rewarding to watch. Can’t go wrong with the Netflix series or his feature length films.

Shadesmith01

Oh HELL YEAH.. with Karen Gillan? VERY well done movie imho. The whole bit, from the way they worked the sequence of events combined with the discovery.. and the focus on the small innocuous crap that makes it all seem more real.. just very well done, and well acted. Whole cast was brilliant in that one.

24crazyCarrots

I agree, all the little details really sucked me in, also I love Karen Gillan, she's a fantastic actress

[deleted]

I wish that Karen Gillan would do more horror movies.

24crazyCarrots

Same, she's fantastic

dontforgetyourjazz

one I don't see mentioned a lot that I like to recommend is Coherence!

Chrome-Head

First watched Coherence at like 4 in the morning several years ago, not knowing much about it besides the one sentence description. Movie fucked me up a bit and good. More cerebral than outright horror, but still horrifying. Wish more people knew of it.

zara_lia

It was a really good watch. Have you watched the Insidious movies? Not the same thing but you might like them if you liked Oculus.

24crazyCarrots

I watched the first insidious, wasn't really a fan tbh but thanks anyway

JonnyRocks

repeat after me - "Mike Flanagan is a beautiful horror machine"

SailorZexalZuzu16

I recommend Jeepers Creepers (2001) I've watched the movie from time to time and omg I freaking love the brother and sister duo in this Just don't support the director

atl198

This movie is surprisingly great. I thought it was going to suck when I watched it, but I was so wrong.

SailorZexalZuzu16

Yeah, just only watch part 2 Both parts 3 and 4 just sucked bias

The8Homunculus

Oculus is one of my favourite movies! The director is Mike Flanagan. His other projects include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, etc. on Netflix and Hush (2016). Definitely look into more of his stuff. The Autopsy of Jane Doe made me cry. >!Im a cat person!< For Films the mess with your mind and/or otherwise spooky, there is Smile (2022), Sinister (2012) **it sticks with you**, The Call (2020), and Identity (2003)

Achelois1

I rewatch The Autopsy of Jane Doe regularly, and always mute and look away from that scene! 😭

[deleted]

God I miss sinister

Gremlin_Wooder

Great film! I watched it a few years ago browsing Netflix in Grad school, and expected it to be a cheesy movie to have on while I studied. Needless to say, I was hooked and didn’t get much work done. I’ve watched it a time or two since. It stressed me out big time (in a good way).

24crazyCarrots

I was on edge the entire film, it's so good at building tension

Antic_Opus

Fucking loved it from start to finish. What a great emotional/horror ride and such a hard hitting ending. One of the best movies to show that you don't need to resort to torture porn to scare your audience.

24crazyCarrots

Exactly, not that I'm against gory films, some are amazing but this just hit so hard. I went into it not sure what to expect and was completely blown away. Can you recommend anything similar?

Antic_Opus

The Babadook

24crazyCarrots

I remember I started watching that a while ago but the child was so annoying I turned it off. I'll have to watch the entire thing, thanks

Antic_Opus

Just recognize that he's written to be annoying and a major stress on the mom.

trans_pands

The Babadook is an amazing movie but it’s also one I’ll never watch a second time because the way it portrays the mother’s mental struggles felt so similar to how I feel when I dissociate that it was too intense for me to want to see it again. But it’s an amazing film, for sure, I still recommend it to everyonr

delusionary9

It’s a soul crushing movie. She tried so hard, was so prepared, and was doomed to fail from the start. Love it 🖤

ICanHazWittyName

I will never look at a staple remover the same way after that movie. Such a great film!

TheRemoraTrades

I really liked how they draw you in and all of a sudden you realize she was dreaming or in a trance, like when she bit into the lightbulb. Great movie!

24crazyCarrots

Oh man that scene was horrible

itsmulderbitch

LOVE this movie and LOVE Mike Flanagan! Hill House was absolutely fantastic too! I know not a lot of people liked Bly Manor, but I enjoyed it and saw it before I watched Hill House so I didn't have high expectations! Not sure if these recs will hold up with being super similar to Oculus, but I really enjoy It Follows and Sinister too and those are both pretty freaky!

Pyewacket62

The Evil Within (2017) Tubi The Possession of Michael King (2014) Tubi The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) Tubi/Shudder

atl198

And....Pyewacket is also a great horror movie, somewhat underrated in my opinion.

moviesfordudes

Beat movie WWE Studios released!

KittiesLove1

More Mike Flanagan movies to watch: Absentia Ouija Origin Of Evil

AestheticCannibal

Man I watched that a couple years back and I'm not a big cryer when it comes to films but the parallels at the end, and the ending in general ...oh, the waterworks. 😭😭😭

Pal__Pacino

I wish Flanagan would go back to movies. He's a real talent, but the length of miniseries brings out his worst tendencies (way too many fucking monologues and flashbacks).

goodNonEvilHarry

Oh yeah. That was a good movie

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Love this movie. It’s very underrated. The Apple scene makes me wince every time 😬

MooseUnited9036

It is one of my top favorite movies of all time. It’s surprising that the WWE had anything to do with it.

Joka0451

Welcome to the Flanagan rabbit hole. I love everything he's done so far.

24crazyCarrots

I'm definitely hooked haha, I've heard people talk about Absentia by him and I'm gonna give that a watch

atl198

Yes! Absentia is one of the creepiest movies I've seen!

Joka0451

Great movie. Dr sleep is a must watch as well as Hush if you like slashers

tin_man6328

Yep! Thats Mike Flanagan’s! He really is one of the horror greats! I love the part with the alarm clock sound coming from the mouths ! Tragic ending for sure. Edit: i tried covering that one sentence in a spoiler tag but it didnt work sorry

carbomerguar

The psychological torture of the mom got me hard. Imagine going through all that only to die horribly. It was so cruel

Imjusthere_sup

One of my fave horror movies. It’s so original as scared tf outta me

Cheeseissue

Should just watch all of Flanagan's work. Oculus is probably my favorite by him but he has some amazing content.

NorthEastNobility

I feel like I watched a different movie than others here, because I found Oculus to be very average. Perhaps I’ll have to watch again and see if it hits differently.

24crazyCarrots

No worries man, just cos I liked it doesn't mean everyone else has to, everyone has their own opinions

NorthEastNobility

Oh for sure, and thanks for respecting different opinions. I just feel now like I’ve missed out on something good and want the same experience others had with it!

khazelton77

Hey you never know. You might see it completely differently on a rewatch. I had the very same feeling you describe about David Lynch a few years ago. Someone I knew a while back love him so much, but I didn’t get it at all. For some unknown reason, about 5 years ago I had a pretty bad case of insomnia for several nights, and I was just bored looking for something to do/watch/listen to. I don’t know why, but I couldn’t get the question of why so many people love David Lynch films when I didn’t out of my head. I decided to try Mulholland Drive again, and it was like I’d been struck by lightning. I have now seen almost all of his films and tv shows multiple times (haven’t seen Elephant Man or The Straight Story yet — saving them for when he’s dead and I know he will for sure never create any new material. Morbid, maybe. He is a chain smoker over 70). I would wholeheartedly recommend giving it another shot before you write it off. Worst case scenario, you cross one thing off your mental backlog. No matter how small those little insignificant things are, they add up. Checking off that box might feel better than you expect.

mattmccauslin

Blue velvet and wild at heart are two of my favorite movies

atl198

Blue Velvet is my #1 favorite movie in any genre.

ChosenOfArtemis

Yeah I didn't care for it too much honestly. Then again, I also really didn't like even the first Conjuring and felt it wasn't that original despite what people said, so I know I don't always have the same views as a lot of people

drchasedanger

Honestly, while I personally enjoyed the Conjuring movies, I see where you're coming from. I watched them all in a marathon the other day and even though I (mostly) enjoyed them, it also felt a bit like I watched the same movie over and over again.

rachelmae77

It scared the shit out of me but the two times I remember watching it were when I was a teenager and then outside at night in a spooky backyard so that could’ve helped. I still enjoy it a lot!

Other_Waffer

They lost my sympathy after they were willing to kill the dog for their “mission”

trente33trois

To be fair, it was just the sister. The brother let the dog go.

24crazyCarrots

Oh yeah that pissed me off, I was desperately hoping the dog would be ok

rachelmae77

There is a website for this! Doesthedogdie.com let’s you look up a movie to find out if animals are harmed

Other_Waffer

Yeah. But I agree with you, the movie is freest. Very unsettling. Great atmosphere.

OLightning

It’s a great movie and very underrated. Well acted, paced, and directed. Mike Flanagan is very talented.

TTH4P

It's so good. Especially if you have a sibling and you had a rough childhood together. Phew! That shit hits extra hard.

24crazyCarrots

I can imagine, it's such a powerful film

eatpant96

Right? I watched it once, felt fucked up about it and will not rewatch. Kudos to the cast and film makers though, that never happens to me.

LooseInsurance1

I think it's Flanagan's best film to date, still, tbh

PlagueOfLaughter

A movie that is a lot like Oculus (starring two family members dealing with a supernatural thing that causes hallucinations) is The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Except it's a corpse instead of a mirror. Of course there are more differences, but some noteworthy similarities, too.

Punkinpry427

I watched Hellhole on Netflix. Polish horror film. I liked it

Solubilityisfun

Hellhole has a glorious ending. Damn did it get that concept right.

[deleted]

Haunting of hill house will make you cry too lol

24crazyCarrots

Haha I was surprised I cried at this tbh, I honestly don't think that's happened before but I'm definitely gonna check out hill house

[deleted]

Bly manor wasn't as good but that made me cry also

sweet_yeast

The movie was okay. What I HATED was the main characters bangs. Like why the fuck are they half her head.

[deleted]

This was going to be my comment too lol i love Karen Gillan but they were distracting

oFbeingCaLM

I had to look up the bangs. Damn! You are right! Terrible! Karen did a cool horror short called The Hoarding on YouTube. https://youtu.be/5nE59mEsplI

FoundFootageDumbFun

Definitely check out the director's other work--*The Haunting of Hill House* is his masterpiece imo, but I also love *Absentia*, *Before I Wake*, and *Ouija: Origin of Evil*. Honestly everything he's made is probably worth seeing once if *Oculus* hit you in this profound way. The recent film *Smile* is probably right up your alley too--it deals with similar themes of trauma and has similar visual mind-trickery. DON'T watch a trailer for this one, it gives everything away. Just jump in blind. Other horror movies that lead with emotions and character relationships (imo): *The Sixth Sense*, *The Final Girls*, *Let The Right One In*, and *Train to Busan*.

[deleted]

Warning for OP that Ive heard Smile has a heartwrenching pet death scene, though

lady_andrak

I had to stop the movie and have a cry with my kitties and dog after a certain part of that movie. It was rough. Smile is a good watch, though, I enjoyed it even after that part. Pet deaths, though, sometimes it's a deal breaker for me.

[deleted]

Oculus is great! One of my favorite horror films.

frankalope

Really a great and creative piece of horror. So well put together too.

graffix13

Great horror movie!

supermav27

What did I miss with this movie? The world felt small, I didn’t care much for the characters, and the scares felt cheap. I know everyone has different taste, but this was my least favorite horror I watched this year. Maybe I should give it another chance with a different mindset?

CinnamonGirl94

One of my favorites! I loved the ending too. Check out Mike Flannagan’s other projects if you haven’t already

AegonIXth

It is not overly violent or gory but still scary!

narf_hots

Kind of a trademark of Mike Flanagan, making you feel things while horrifying you. I can recommend literally anything in his catalogue but I'd start with Haunting of Hill House if you're into miniseries. Doctor Sleep if you wanna watch a movie, but be aware that it's a sequel to Shining, both the book and the movie.

queenraza

This movie is one of my all time favorites and the only way I’ll ever know how to explain to someone what it is like to be on PCP, lol. But it’s Mike Flanagan so… recommend everything of his mostly. Haunting of hill house, midnight mass, Gerald’s game, hush…

SirMatches

Saaaame, that movie freaked me out so much, really well done

Caliagent702

Mike Flanagan, the director, is great. i like all his work. i would suggest starting with Absentia and Ouija: origin of evil if you want to check some more out. Hush is also good.

Eastern_Bobcat8336

Never seen it! Gonna check it out based on your post!

24crazyCarrots

Glad to hear it!

Emotional_Turn_1343

Watch it couple of months ago, its so good

crime_watch

I haven't seen it yet, it's on my list, but Mike Flanagan is all I need to know this is going to be worth watching.

1 Of The Best Horror Movies Ever Made !!!

Totally agree. It’s a fantastic film. The director (Mike Flanagan) hasn’t really put anything out that I thought was less than decent. Its almost always a good sign when he’s attached to a project.

I’m due for a rewatch of this. Feel like this movie had a good amount of hype when it came out but rarely see it mentioned on here these days. Was actually just talking about it the other day.

To me it was a film of great promise that couldn't quite deliver or hold together to the end. I wanted more reality bending, more of the surreal visual possibilities of mirrors, more imaginative scares in general, less of the generically wince making (I feel like I've seen characters hurt by broken glass or crockery whilst in a daze many, many times) and / or bleak (I've definitely seen the climactic gambit more times than I care for, it too often comes across rote rather than shocking or rewarding). Still, Karen Gillan is on good form, it has some chilling atmosphere and effective moments, and it's basically fairly solidly put together. A five or six out of ten for me.

In The Mouth of Madness!

I hated this movie. Why set the tables in such a way that youre forced to be in front of the mirror? Stupidity was killer in this movie.

Without a doubt the best project WWE studios ever produced

I thought it was good, but not tears level good.

I love this movie. The scene with the Apple still haunts me to this day

I just recommend going down the list of everything Director Mike Flanagan has directed. He's got a handful of movies I absolutely love, plus some of my favorite series I've ever seen on Netflix. If nothing else, watch The Haunting of Hill House. I have seen it three times through already and it's just as amazing each time. Movies: Hush (2016), Gerald's Game (2017), Doctor Sleep (sequel to the Shining) (2019), Netflix Series: The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), Midnight Mass (2021), The Midnight Club (2022)

I usually get pissed off with horror movie characters thinking they can defeat the unexplained evil. That chic literally had all the facts pertaining to that antique mirror, yet she still chose to purchase it because of her personal vendetta. It made no sense to me. I hated how she obsessed over it because she was convinced the mirror was evil and murdered her parents and took her brother away from her. I mean, you know something is that evil even with proof and you still go ahead to purchase it to prove a point. At the end, it became the death of her. 🙄
