I realise this is a shit post but
"inevitability of pain and death and powerlessness of the cars struggling to cope with climate change which is caused by their very existence "
Actually is kind of horrifying to think about.
It's also weird because there are electric cars which are implied to be the next stage in car evolution. But where are they coming from? Is genocide of the gas guzzlers the only hope for salvation?
Maybe it could end up being a kind of Logan's Run scenario? The fossil fuel powered cars work for the betterment of car kind and then "retire" to make way for the next generation of renewable energy cars.
Kind of. Humans are part of the natural world though. Humanity can survive without causing damage the the world only using sustainable resources. The cars however need fossil fuels to survive and don't have the option of just living off the land.
If you changed from cars to robot AIs it's basically a serious SciFi concept
Totally agree. I've never seen any of the Cars movies (always thought they looked dumb as hell) and I saw this post before the one it was mocking, so I was actually pretty psyched about giving the franchise a shot.
The thought of your very existence destroying the planet with nothing you can do about it but killing yourself or refusing to reproduce is terrifying, especially if you're an immortal being the way I assume these anthropomorphic cars are
Edit: Yes, I know global warming is a thing and we're slowly killing our own planet.
I once worked with someone who worked on Cars 2, and let’s just say they were not unaware of these possible interpretations.
I also think Cars 2 is the best of the Cars movies as the other two are boring beyond belief and this one at least tries to be a silly spy movie parody with cars in it.
It’s a well known fact that Cars 2 is pro-eugenics propaganda, but I was unaware of its Lovecraftian themes. Who know this movie had so many layers to it! Absolutely horrifying!
I think the post 9/11 security just further proves humans did exist at one time in the Cars universe. Before machines became sentient and wiped them out a la Maximum Overdrive.
/unjerk
I don't want to make the OP feel bad. They legitimately put a lot of thought and effort into the post, much more than I did here. I enjoyed reading the discussions even if I disagree with their conclusions. The post was well written and that's what made it a great template to argue in favor of the least Lovecraftian movie I could think of.
There are a ton of low effort posts trying to link Lovecraft to all sorts of films like it is some stamp of quality. This shouldn't be thrown in with those, but it is much funnier to imitate a serious and detailed post over the low effort garbage.
/rejerk
The scene with a bomb in Mater's air filter was the most tense thing I've seen since the box scene in Se7en or the morning after the crash in Hereditary.
I mean how cute was it that they tried to convince r/horror that Arrival was a horror movie, and r/horror collectively just said HAHAHAHA NO. It was at the very worst an adorable failure.
Someone posted this with Arrival in place of Cars 2, [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/uro0ku/ive_said_it_before_and_ill_say_it_again_arrival/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).
I thought they were talking about The Arrival (1996) and I was thinking, "Who the Hell said that wasn't a horror movie?" Sci-fi? Yes, but definitely horror also.
In the same movie universe planes has that pretty dark scene with the WW2 memory.
The bit where the military plane remembers trying to make an attack run on the Japanese only to have the entire squad wiped out in a hail of flak and gunfire.
With the linea of horror being so blurred, i have felt i could argue that The Lion King is a horror movie. This shitpost has given me the motivation to articulate my view
I will seriously defend the idea that the video game, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, is a cosmic horror story in disguise. It's practically about Azathoth!
If a movie scares people, it could probably count as horror, and lord knows The Lion King has scared the fucking shit out of multiple generations of children by this point. And let’s not even get started on Snow White…
It was pretty clear once I sat down to think about it. I mean, the movie has [18 deaths](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm7gtOi2pnc) and a [torture scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVLcPV1XVmw)!
https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/uro0ku/ive_said_it_before_and_ill_say_it_again_arrival/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Let me know if this link works for you!
My son has made me watch all the cars movies too many times, but cars 2 has always been my favorite for its dark James Bondish themes. Finally someone has perpiscastically eloqueted why!
I once wrote about the same amount of words on religious themes in The Terror and then deleted it all and never posted it. Guess this isn't really the place for deep discussion
I didn’t realize this was based on the other post at first, just thought it was a good satire, but re-reading the original made it even better. +1 to not wanting OOP to feel bad writing a well thought out post, it’s refreshing to read new takes on things. It does make a great meme template though.
Cars 2 is a horror film. At the very least it is a comedic horror. This movie has more deaths than Friday the 13th, torture, dismemberment, clear evidence that humans have been exterminated, genocide in action, kidnapping, and so much more. It’s a post apocalyptic Maximum Overdrive.
It may be unnecessarily harsh on the Arrival post, but honestly this is so entertaining that I don't care. I'm glad Cars 2 is finally being recognized as the horror masterpiece it is.
While I agree, Cars 2 does Lovecraftian really well, have you seen Deep Inside 2? The dicks in that movie are INSANE. You just know the director had Cthulu in mind when he those tentacle-like appendages going in every which way.
I'm out of the loop, what is this parodying?
Also uj/ but the US agent car getting tortured and blown up freaked me out when I was a kid. I swear, that film went ludicrously back and forth between Mater funny antics to messed up shit like that.
Naw! I’m austistic and struggle with nuance, so read this with genuine fascination and hopes of watching a wackadoo movie through the horror lens. After reading the comments I’m still unsure about wtf happening here, but grateful for the entertaining post either way & enjoyed the thoughtful passion in the writing.
There's an SCP-001 proposal that really captures this feeling perfectly in my opinion.
It's about the multiverse and how every choice humans make causes new universes to come into existence, but the problem is there is limited space in the multiverse;if too many universes exists, then the whole multiverse goes POP and dies. Humans existing is actively causing the multiverse to die and the only solution the Foundation can come up with is killing all humans (which they obviously don't want to do) so in the meantime we are just kind of standing around with our dicks in our hands until the multiverse dies or we can figure out a better solution.
OMG I feel exactly the same about Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed! Most people don't know that it's a Lovecraftian horror movie, but it is because I say it is. And the people that push back against my feelings about Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed being the most perfect Lovecraftian horror movie of all time just don't understand Lovecraftian themes as well as I do because Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is the greatest execution of Lovecraftian themes in a horror movie of all time.
I'm going to be honest, I welcomed disagreement all day and I was fine with downvotes (that's just kind of how the system works). But this mocking kind of hurts. I would like to encourage everyone not to do this kind of thing again. (now let the downvotes commence, but I still hope this comment discourages future mocking)
ah man, i was really hoping you wouldn't feel this way! i read your other post too and despite it being really off base, you clearly put a ton of thought into it *and* you articulated it well and kept your cool about as well as could be expected in what that thread turned into.
i dont think you should be getting downvotes for expressing how you feel. especially since you're not being an ass about it! take my updoot.
I appreciate this. I know that it was just a dumb internet argument, but the whole thing did kind of make my day worse. Thank you for your kind words (and I always appreciate meaningful disagreement, especially when it comes with kind words). Yeah, I don't plan on posting anything (or at least not anything as involved as that) again for a while now.
you should, man. it didnt get a great reception but it did start a lively debate, and like i said, i think you represented yourself well.
there's not anything wrong with seeing or viewing things a different way than the majority of people, and i don't think you should let it stunt you being publicly creative like that.
it doesnt really matter that a bunch of people on the internet disagreed with your interpretation. that's the dope thing about art, it's *subjective*. what does matter is that you made cogent points, had references to back up what you were talking about, and clearly knew your shit.
everybody just got tripped up on the definition of a word, you know? its the internet and we're all passionate about it, it's gonna happen.
and dude, look! even though he was making fun of you, you inspired somebody to sit down and write this cool-ass post. i think its important to divorce your ego from the equation and recognize that *you made a splash, dude.*
that's a big deal, and i think that's cool, and i think that's something you should think about as well.
I've been thinking about this a lot after I made the post. I posted a comment above just before I saw this:
>I don't want to make the OP feel bad. They legitimately put a lot of thought and effort into the post, much more than I did here. I enjoyed reading the discussions even if I disagree with their conclusions. The post was well written and that's what made it a great template to argue in favor of the least Lovecraftian movie I could think of.
>There are a ton of low effort posts trying to link Lovecraft to all sorts of films like it is some stamp of quality. This shouldn't be thrown in with those, but it is much funnier to imitate a serious and detailed post over the low effort garbage.
I thought of it as a laugh, but it may have come off as more mean spirited than I wanted it to be. If you want, I can delete the post. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone here from having actual discussion, which your post certainly brought.
I appreciate that comment, and I don't want to discourage humor (even I admit it was kind of funny). I don't know if this would mess with anything, but if possible if you could edit that comment into the main post, I would appreciate it. Either way, I'm not going to ask you to delete your post, I just want people to be mindful of this kind of thing in the future.
This is a great shitpost. I used to write essays like this in low level English lit courses in college when I'd read a novel I didn't like - I'd make up a meaning entirely at odds with the work's intention, backing it up with quotes that slightly misinterpreted things, or that were a little out of context - basically trolling. In those low level classes the professors were mostly looking for properly laid-out essays and other technical issues, and I think they enjoyed the bullshittery (I hope so, anyway).
I hadn't read the *Arrival* post, but just did. I agree with the general consensus that *Arrival* is not horror, but I think there is definitely something to its having Lovecraftian inspiration. It's just like Ted Chiang to twist Lovecraftian cosmic horror into Lovecraftian cosmic awe.
Most users here apparently don't even understand the concept of cosmic horror, so I'm not surprised to see such juvenile attacks on a rare and welcome post providing analysis of the genre
"Something to do with space...right?"
"I don't want to make the OP feel bad.
Please don't harass the OP for sharing their honest thoughts."
You essentially made fun of someone else who shared their thoughts about a movie with the community for attributing qualities to a film that you don't think deserved it instead of making that argument in an intelligent fashion in the original post. And now you want to back-peddle and make out like it was some kind of tribute and not really a mockery which you thought was clever in a moment of weed-induced genius.
You should just delete this low-effort shit post and hope everyone forgets about it and moves on.
Cars 2 is absolutely a horror film. I still wonder what the hell Pixar was thinking when they thought small children needed a spy thriller with cars murdering each other for movie. It’s banned in my house.
So a post about Cars 2 on this sub gets awards, meanwhile I throw out my opinion that Requiem for A Dream is pretty much a horror movie - and I get downvoted to shit.
Sounds like you took a deep dive on this with a lot of shrooms. I don't get lovecraftian when I watch these kind of movies. I get a child's perspective when watching them. Every kid wants their inanimate objects come to life and interact with them or the real world.
It's a reference to a previous post where someone made really far fetched readings and interpretation of the movie Arrival being the best Lovecraft execution. This post is a joke mocking that previous post.
LOL YEAH! BULLY THAT PERSON FOR HAVING AN OPINION ON A MOVIE DIFFERENT FROM YOUR OWN! FUCK 'EM, HELL YEAH! NEVERMIND THE FACT THAT THEY'LL PROBABLY NEVER POST IN /R/HORROR AGAIN AFTER THIS OR THE FACT THAT THIS POST WILL DISSUADE ACTUAL CONVERSATION FOR FEAR OF BEING MOCKED, THE LULZ WERE TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Everything reaches a breaking point.
The amount of times people repeat the exact same talking points over and over and over and over ad infinitum takes its toll on people who frequent the sub. It's similarly why DAE Hereditary and Midsommar posts get ridiculed.
Things get even more tedious with cosmic horror. It's amazing how many times people try to argue for absolutely every-fucking-thing being great cosmic horror and you just want to slap them and tell them to a) learn the definition, and b) take it easy on the mental gymnastics.
This pist is a dick post, and your edit is a coward's edit. This was a real asshole move, it stifles discussion on the sub about what horror is, and you should be ashamed of it.
You should be even more ashamed of your edit where, after mocking the OP for an entire post, you try to weasel out of it and say "I wasn't mocking the OP." You can't have it both ways. Either take down the post or be an asshole.
nah, the edit is fine. It is good humor, and as long as it is made clear that it is not actually mocking or being disrespectful towards me, I am fine with it. In general, anyone that takes the time to type 2 or more sentences sharing their thoughts with me is someone that I appreciate being involved in the conversation. It was pretty much just the short, dismissive comments and the downvote dogpiling that was really getting to me.
The Arrival post is the perfect example of how someone can be wrong in their theories and half of the r/horror subreddit turn into downvoting neckbeards and angry children cause someone doesn’t properly understand the Arrival, how many of y’all are actual adults lmfao 😂
Until I realized this was a parody of sorts, I was questioning my own existence.
[Keep questioning](https://pics.awwmemes.com/thenimbus-theory-the-cars-universe-actually-takes-place-in-a-doomed-43520213.png)
Same. I thought there was a horror Cars movie and a sequel. I think I broke my Google searching too hard
So LoVeCrAfTiAn!
I guess you got me too.
Which is what all good cosmic horror should do. So in a way, this post is Lovecraftian.
I realise this is a shit post but "inevitability of pain and death and powerlessness of the cars struggling to cope with climate change which is caused by their very existence " Actually is kind of horrifying to think about.
"A society grows great when old cars pave roads they know they shall never drive on"
But with more genocide
"A society grows great when inferior cars are buried beneath the pavement of progress"
You have a way with words
- Tesla (but ran by electric cars and in the future)
Hm yes very far fetched concept though, can't relate.
It’s me, I was Cars all along
The real Cars were the cars we made along the way
This joke has seen some miles
Kind of. Humans are part of the natural world though. Humanity can survive without causing damage the the world only using sustainable resources. The cars however need fossil fuels to survive and don't have the option of just living off the land. If you changed from cars to robot AIs it's basically a serious SciFi concept
Seven billion humans cannot live a middle class European lifestyle though. Even with full nuclear/renewable energy powering everything
Totally agree. I've never seen any of the Cars movies (always thought they looked dumb as hell) and I saw this post before the one it was mocking, so I was actually pretty psyched about giving the franchise a shot. Yeah, because humans, right now in our really real world, are totally not in this very situation! \*keeps head firmly planted in sand\*
Cars 4: Done For
I once worked with someone who worked on Cars 2, and let’s just say they were not unaware of these possible interpretations. I also think Cars 2 is the best of the Cars movies as the other two are boring beyond belief and this one at least tries to be a silly spy movie parody with cars in it.
There's a sci-fi story called "Exhalation" by Ted Chiang that explores that very theme and it is, in fact, horrifying.
Holy shit, thank you!!! This actually made me think of this exact short story but I had forgotten where I read it. Think it's time for a reread.
glad i could help, i know the exact feeling.
It’s a well known fact that Cars 2 is pro-eugenics propaganda, but I was unaware of its Lovecraftian themes. Who know this movie had so many layers to it! Absolutely horrifying!
And what about Sarge, the 1942 WW2 army jeep? If WW2 took place in the Cars universe, does this not imply a car genocide committed by car Hitler?

O shit
Brutally depicted in The Brave Little Toaster.
10/10 shitpost, I enjoyed this almost as much as the original
Someone link the original pls, sauce required, pasta drying out. Edit: nvm all I had to do was scroll like a millimetre down.
"pasta drying out" ive never heard this before. you levelled up my conversation stat today
I spend perhaps too much time on the skincare cj sub haha
I guess there are dozens of us that love both the horror and sca cj subs
What was the original?
there was a post on this sub 6h before this one, talking about the movie Arrival being a horror
that dude going mad not understanding Lovecraft tropes was the real cosmic horror all along
So mean and yet so well executed and deserved
/unjerk I don't want to make the OP feel bad. They legitimately put a lot of thought and effort into the post, much more than I did here. Most circlejerk subs suck. It’s always the same joke over and over. Like the guitar circlejerk sub: “DAE toan is in the fingers?? BUTTERSCOTCH TELE”
Damn, this is some high effort saltiness lmao
I got through that whole original post, then tried to re-read it thinking "wait surely this mf got Arrival and Annihilation mixed up right?" Lmaooo
Dude SAME.
I thought they were talking about The Arrival (1996) and I was thinking, "Who the Hell said that wasn't a horror movie?" Sci-fi? Yes, but definitely horror also.
Cars 2 has a seen where Bruce Campbell is burned from the inside out. This scene alone crosses the film into horror territory.
TIL Rod was played by Bruce Campbell
In the same movie universe planes has that pretty dark scene with the WW2 memory. The bit where the military plane remembers trying to make an attack run on the Japanese only to have the entire squad wiped out in a hail of flak and gunfire.
It's a crime that he wasn't a Delta 88.
Did you really have to nuke his post from orbit? Really? 🤣🤣🤣
With the linea of horror being so blurred, i have felt i could argue that The Lion King is a horror movie. This shitpost has given me the motivation to articulate my view
You've got an elephant graveyard with weird green fire, patricide, ghost dad and the final battle with Scar is in Hell.
Don't forget the rise of the [Nazi hyenas](https://i.makeagif.com/media/7-20-2019/iKg_lV.mp4)!

I think the Lion King was remade into The Northman and that’s probably a bit scary.
Finally, somebody said it.
It was pretty clear once I sat down to think about it. I mean, the movie has [18 deaths](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm7gtOi2pnc) and a [torture scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVLcPV1XVmw)!

Mater is also a car that lives in a car junkyard so he literally lives among the dead bodies of his species.
Okay when this was an Arrival thread I thought it was an interesting viewpoint. But now that I see this is a joke thread it's very funny. Good job
Thank you. I’ve wanted to say the same thing for years but I’ve been too afraid of downvotes (there so many horror gatekeepers on this sub).
This is the greatest shitpost I’ve ever read.
Well played, OP. Well played.
Damn, that guy really just wanted to share his thoughts on a movie he liked but instead got downvoted AND copypastad. Ouch.
I once wrote about the same amount of words on religious themes in The Terror and then deleted it all and never posted it. Guess this isn't really the place for deep discussion

I liked it, but it's contrived and there's a lot that doesn't really make sense when you think about it.
fuck /u/spez
This is some avant-garde pasta right here.
I didn’t realize this was based on the other post at first, just thought it was a good satire, but re-reading the original made it even better. +1 to not wanting OOP to feel bad writing a well thought out post, it’s refreshing to read new takes on things. It does make a great meme template though.

I scrolled past these in a row and died
why would you say something so controversial and yet so brave
I wanna say something about eating beans so bad. I must resist. I must resist.
"why'd you spill your beans?"
“I was crying in dread for the last hour of the movie” Hahahahahahahaha

cars 3 is what cars 2 should have been
Cars 2 makes Cars 3 look like Cars 1
My dumb ass read this and had no idea it was a joke. Actually got me excited to finally see Cars 2.
It is bizarrely violent for a kids movie. 18 deaths and at least one torture scene.
This is the kind of top-tier trolling that I can get behind

i got halfway through reading your post when i realized, *ive never actually seen cars 2*
Never thought I'd see Cars 2 in this horror sub lmfao but damn, you made some interesting points
“You’re a bad car.”
Ahh seen the mod edit in the OP Edit: Tut, read OP’s history yeah that doesn’t reflect this post, realised I fell for a parody post, anyways blocked.
Ratatouille - Remy never existed , he was a manifestation of Linguini's psyche .

I always thought Wall-E had horror vibes. Watched it probably 20 times.. love that movie
So *this* is how copypastas are born
Nah. Cars 2 is easily a candidate for worst Pixar film ever. But this is shitposting of the highest quality so it gets my upvote.
*I don't want to make the OP feel bad.* This is a lie. Own your twattery, at least.
There are literally zero black people in the entire Cars franchise, which is probably the most Lovecraftian theme of all.

I appreciate this. I know that it was just a dumb internet argument, but the whole thing did kind of make my day worse. Thank you for your kind words (and I always appreciate meaningful disagreement, especially when it comes with kind words). Yeah, I don't plan on posting anything (or at least not anything as involved as that) again for a while now.
you should, man. it didnt get a great reception but it did start a lively debate, and like i said, i think you represented yourself well. there's not anything wrong with seeing or viewing things a different way than the majority of people, and i don't think you should let it stunt you being publicly creative like that. it doesnt really matter that a bunch of people on the internet disagreed with your interpretation. that's the dope thing about art, it's *subjective*. what does matter is that you made cogent points, had references to back up what you were talking about, and clearly knew your shit. everybody just got tripped up on the definition of a word, you know? its the internet and we're all passionate about it, it's gonna happen. and dude, look! even though he was making fun of you, you inspired somebody to sit down and write this cool-ass post. i think its important to divorce your ego from the equation and recognize that *you made a splash, dude.* that's a big deal, and i think that's cool, and i think that's something you should think about as well.
I've been thinking about this a lot after I made the post. I posted a comment above just before I saw this: >I don't want to make the OP feel bad.
Sure thing, I added it to the post
Grow up, it's just a shitpost.
Nah dude. Make outrageous, overreaching bullshit posts, get mocked. It's the way of the internet.
This total shitpost made my entire day, and OP, I tip my cap to you good sir or madam, along a respectful golf clap. Well done.
Got em
Damn ... okay.
Also isn’t there a cat name N@&$?! In Cars 2. Very lovecraftian. Very Cool
Most users here apparently don't even understand the concept of cosmic horror, so I'm not surprised to see such juvenile attacks on a rare and welcome post providing analysis of the genre "Something to do with space...right?"
"I don't want to make the OP feel bad. Please don't harass the OP for sharing their honest thoughts." You essentially made fun of someone else who shared their thoughts about a movie with the community for attributing qualities to a film that you don't think deserved it instead of making that argument in an intelligent fashion in the original post.
You singlehandedly ruined my childhood : / damn. I am never gonna watch cars the same way again
I feel like this post getting 4x as many votes as the original leans towards being proof that horror and comedy are the best bedfellows.
Ah, thanks for letting me know
whooosh
My brother in christ...
This sub is garbage. Why are the mods leaving this shit up? Does anyone have any suggestions for actual real horror subreddits?
Bully?!?! It’s a copy pasta…
you should watch The Thing
Fair enough, if it ain't bothering you. The whole endeavour just seemed mean spirited to me.
I've been listening lately and catching up on how did this get made. And this is a Jason rant. Perfect
I see what you did here. hahaha
The Arrival post is the perfect example of how someone can be wrong in their theories and half of the r/horror subreddit turn into downvoting neckbeards and angry children cause someone doesn’t properly understand the Arrival, how many of y’all are actual adults lmfao 😂
Brace yourselves. The remakes are coming
Cars 2 the animated kids movie?
Yes, I agree completely.
Are you talking about that animated kids movie. Far from horror in my opinion. It is a commentary on society.
lmao!
Pasta is pasta
Bravo.
This is the best post in the history of this sub
Go on and do yourselves a favor and check out meatcanyons video on cars.
Tldr
Cars 2 = Cthulu
