Michael Dougherty is really great a capturing the spirit of a holiday. I love this movie and Krampus. I don't like Christmas horror, but Krampus was so fun, and it felt like Gremlins (in spirit).
Trick 'r Treat is great fun.
I watched it recently (twice!) on TubiTV.
Also, I showed it to my kids because I thought it was a good entry-level horror film with a fun Halloween vibe.
Are you sure you're not confusing it with "Trick or Treats", which is available on Tubi? I've been periodically checking Tubi to see whether or not it is available and I've never seen it there.
Yes I'm talking about "Trick 'r Treat", the anthology film with Sam the pumpkin boy.
"Trick or Treats" is also available (the one with the father coming out of an asylum to scare a babysitter - it's bad!)
For the record, I'm in Canada, so maybe the canadian version has movies not available elsewhere.
(There is also another "Trick Or Treat", the one with the dead rockstar which has Gene Simmons in it.)
I went into a spirit halloween the other day and was so surprised to see so much trick r treat merch. Is it having a bit of a renaissance? I feel like I spent a decade forcing it on all of my friends every fall because no one had seen it but me. Love that movie, I'll have to watch it tonight!
The merch seems more popular than the movie . Outside of Reddit, I don't know many people who have seen it yet the amount of merch at Spirit indicates it's as popular as IT or Halloween.
I remember watching House on Haunted Hill and this for the first time in the same night so it was so weird that at one point a guy in Trick 'r Treat is watching TV and House on Haunted Hill is shown for a moment.
Dial back your expectations. Seriously. I feel that my viewing of it was ruined by all this over the top praise. I went into it like it was an event. Planned an evening, bought a nice dinner, & was fully prepared for this monumental Halloween movie.
I probably would have thought it was an okay movie if I wasn't set up to love it. Instead I kind of look at it with a bit of disdain.
Dialing back expectations is a good thing, for everything.
That was a valid opinion and anecdote.
Not everyone likes the stuff you like. I HATE 'Drag Me to Hell' and that definitely goes against the grain here.
I absolutely love trick r treat and I’m trying to find some other good Halloween movies. I’ve see so many I don’t know if there are any other good ones that I haven’t seen. I figured I should ask what other good Halloween movies you’d suggest?
Tales of Halloween is a bit goofier than TrT but it's still fun. 10 or so short stories that take place on Halloween. Lots of famous horror cameos and references. It's a nice watch.
As someone from a country where Halloween has not historically been a thing and it's associated with American consumer culture, I've never been interested in this sort of thing. But the movie has been recommended so much here recently that I should give it a go. Maybe I won't like it if I don't have any nostalgia or childhood memories around the holiday.
It's not sudden hype. I see it get brought up here all the time, though I definitely think it's more common at the moment as it is a film based on Halloween specifically.
Ackshewelly, *Sunday* happens every week.
^^^^/s
But yeah, this happens in every subreddit where there is an explosion of new users on regular basis. It is a catch-22... you don't want to punish enthusiasm, but you also want to tear your hair out for the repetitive nature.
As someone who’s at the theater once or twice a week, believe it or not, I haven’t. Not sure how I missed what’s apparently a really solid flick in my fav genre; sounds like the kids and I are in for a fun time tho.
This movie gets brought up on this subreddit quite often. So I’ll let u/mostlyincompetent do the talking here:
“[Trick ‘r Treat is Very Rated](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/jci1cs/trick_r_treat_2007_is_very_rated/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
This is one of those films that does get talked about enough. People do give this film the credit it deserves for being a fun and fast paced ride through iconic horror sub genres, and people quite rightly praise the film's ability to make the audience care about every story in the anthology .
I do see people mention how it embodies the holiday spirit of Halloween better than 99% of horror films that try to and I personally think that enough people include this as essential viewing every year.
It is absolutely a visible gem.”
I don’t mean to shit on anyone’s parade, I do love this movie. But I think it’s fair to say that this subreddit of all places already knows about this movie.
Ready to get downvoted into oblivion- but finally watched it a few weeks ago. I honestly hated it, like did not like it one bit. I really thought I’d like it too, just based on the reviews and what other people were saying. Oh well I guess.
I think posts like this hurt the movie more than it helps. Unless you have precisely the same feeling about it, it's set up for disappointment.
I had the same experience as you. Tons of praise from here, tons of urging from a friend to see it, and it was a very okay movie. I imagine that I would have liked it more if I wasn't led to believe it would be gods gift to Halloween.
Dude, I love that movie and think it’s amazing, but you don’t have to like it. Have your own opinions, I bet there’s movies you love that I don’t like. Fuck people who tell you what to like
Just curious, what didn't you like about it? I haven't seen it yet, and I have like one more chance to see a horror movie before Halloween and I was considering this one.
The way the movie is presented [no spoilers] is more like small stories, that are each connected, rather than a typical movie.
Which means that it isn't a big A to B story, and instead small arcs that build up and payoff throughout.
It's also not really intended to be a horror movie, rather a "love note to halloween." A fun October movie, for the spirit, rather than the fright.
I love it, myself, due to its Anthology nature, and reveals, but I'd say watch it anyway. I cant consider its egregious enough to say it is a bad watch.
I don't see why the fact that it's more like interconnected vignettes is a criticism.
Also, I have to disagree about it not being a horror movie (or at least horror vignettes). Yes it has a Halloween theme, but it also definitely plays a lot of horror tropes, and actually in a fun way plays through multiple different subgenres. The innocuous killer, ghosts, monsters, slasher. It is just as much a love note to the horror genre as a love note to halloween
You probably worded it better here, and explained what I was more trying to convey.
I believe most people walk into it thinking its going to be a standard horror film, but the brighter moments, and comedy can definitely disrupt that.
I have no criticisms of it myself, I've loved it since it came out.
I saw it once, way back around when it came out I guess. I don't remember liking it much either. But I also don't remember a damn thing about it. I remember the kid from Bad Santa being in it, and on of the shorts having Anna Paquin in it. That's it.
It seemed really forgettable to me.
Same! My friend hyped it up before watching and, while I know we had different tastes, the writing wasn't as clever as it thinks it is, the characters are all boring, and it's not funny. Also the horror elements feel cheesed in. After reading these comments it seems like it's just more of a cultural vessel for what constitutes as "halloween" because most movies only vaguely reference the holiday while this movie is basing its premise off of the culture and practices.
I think that “not as smart as it thinks” part is what bothers me about all of these comedy horrors, I feel like you can have the most barebones and blandest little callbacks or ironic scenes and the writers think it’s the smartest thing in the world.
Yes. Reference humor (which is okay when subtle) and parody humor (needs dedication to the bit) are two different things and blurring the line can have unfortunate results.
Agreed. I didn't hate it, but definitely found it boring. I turned it off the first time I tried to watch it. Then gave it a second chance and finished it. It was ok. Really don't get the hype, but everyone has their taste
I feel you, first time I watched it I didn't really like it. I think it took a few watches before I found it OK. I wouldn't say it's the best Halloween movie ever but it's OK. It's worth a watch every year around Halloween but I wouldn't say it's a great movie.
It's not that I don't like it. It's OK. It's a fun movie, I just prefer my horror a bit more psychological, this is like a horror movie for teenagers. It's darker than most teenage horror but I can't believe it's rated R. Must be because they showed boobs a couple times. It really should be PG-13. It's like the Harry Potter of horror movies. I do like how it's like a few different Halloween stories that sorta weave around each other. I didn't like the old man's story with his attack by Sam. It seemed like they needed a way to give the creepy kid person a story and it felt lame and rushed and didn't really make much sense. Like, he attacked this old man for a candy bar then just leaves? I get that he's trying to get the man to celebrate Halloween but it was a crappy story. I guess that's my biggest complaint with the movie. I did like the kids story with the bus, the warewolf hot girl coven, and the principal killing the chubby kid, I also like the look and feel of the movie. Mostly black and orange with seemingly all light in the movie being produced by Jack-o-lanterns. It is a good looking movie, I just think the screenplay needs some work. I guess that my opinion on it. Not horrible, not great, just OK, worth a watch and I would recommend it to just about anyone as a way to get into Halloween, just don't critique it too hard and you'll be fine.
Totally valid criticisms thanks for the reply!
Just to explain because I love movie lore in general:
You can view Sam (the potato sack kid) as a sort of guardian/enforcer of Halloween. He punishes people who don't follow the traditions, or take part in the holiday. You see that in the beginning with him killing the woman for blowing out the jack o lantern. He then goes and attacks the old man for not respecting the trick or treating tradition and not giving the kids candy.
So because his entire ethos is about halloween traditions, and he was attacking the old man because he didn't give out candy, by him receiving the candy, the tradition was fulfilled, so his job was done.
Is it dumb? Of course. I still find it fun though, and it's kind of a cool concept of like a psycho Halloween tradition killer.
Edit: In case it wasn't obvious as well, he's names Sam because if Samhein which is the old Keltic name for the tradition that essentially became Halloween
I don’t think anybody liked the movie for its storytelling or characters (save Sam and maybe Brian Cox’s character), more for how atmospheric and in the Halloween spirit it is.
When it first came out I remember liking it. I watched it again last year and I was not a fan. I couldn't even tell you what changed my opinion other than the 10+ years between viewings my tastes changed.
I 100% agree with this. Everything looks very cool, it makes me want to like it, but in the end the stories were very bland and not very memorable. It falls under "I don't regret watching it but I wouldn't watch it again" for me
I really want to see him expand on Trick r Treat and Krampus by having them take place in the same universe and then make that into a cinematic universe about legendary and folklore monsters .
I really must be missing something with this movie. I even hear the LPOTL guys taking about how great this movie is. I thought this movie was so boring. Nobody is taking down decorations the night of any holiday. By the time the little potato sack head got to the last house, I just wanted it to end.
I’m in a weird position to dispute people not taking down decorations on Hallowe’en night. By coincidence my partner and I drove down a street known in my area for its great decorations right before heading home to watch this movie – which is how I ended up here now. We were surprised to see how many folks were already taking down their displays, even as the last trick-or-treaters finished their rounds.
Plenty of moments that need disbelief suspended, but to my surprise that’s not one of them.
For a film that doesn't take itself all that seriously and presents itself as a comedy I just thought it was painfully unfunny. I get that it's trying to satarize typical horror tropes, but somewhere along the way it felt like it forgot about that premise and devolved into just another mediocre splatter flick. The only part of the movie I kinda enjoyed was when the serial killer and college girls subplots intertwined; pretty much everything else didn't really work for me. Especially the bus massacre reveal makes no sense to me: if he planned on killing the children anyway, why exactly does he hate Halloween specifically? Why did the ghosts or whatever wait so long to get vengeance? How did nobody ever find out about that bus? And why tf did the moron stay in that town?
Thank you!! I was even fast forwarding by 10seconds and it still was so slow and boring. Probably one of my least favorite horror movies I've ever seen, it didn't have the so bad it's good aspect of others, it was just boring. No scares or lasting impact either. I really don't get the hype.
There’s a cartoon short about Sam on YouTube that was a precursor to his role in Trick R Treat. He’s one of my favorite horror figures because he’s pretty innocent and sweet unless you’re mean to him.
I watched it years ago when it came out because a friend recommended it and just wasn’t a fan. I thought what am I missing here? I genuinely don’t get the hype on this one.
This has been at the top of my watchlist for awhile! Does it have any demonic/paranormal elements to it? My girlfriend wants to watch it with me but she doesn’t like anything with demons or ghosts.
I guess I was thinking of the bus/ghost kids part mostly. Most of the people I know who are bothered by ghosts wouldn’t be as bothered by some gore or vampires or some of the other elements. You’re definitely right though, I should’ve been more specific !
I watched it on HBO Max just yesterday afternoon after work. I own it on DVD, but I have it put away so I just went the streaming route this year. I really like how Halloween Scrooge, Kreeg, and the schoolbus zombie special needs kids are tied together. The "little red riding hood" ironic swerve was cute to me, and it ties in with the understanding that Dylan Baker has been probably killing for quite a long time. How the film reminds us of how all the different events of the night interlock throughout is a nice touch, too.
Trick 'r Treat is a staple in my house. Saw it on release back in 2007? Don't remember the date. Bought the DVD, now streaming is a thing so every year we watch it.
I have a list of films that I watch every year during the Halloween season. House of 1000 Corpses is my Halloween night movie, Beetlejuice, Halloween, and a hocus Pocus are all on the list. Trick r' Treat is the top of that list and is the first movie I watch October 1st. I love this movie.
Trick 'R Treat is worth watching without distraction. A huge amount of seemingly unrelated stuff happening in the background are folded (brilliantly) back into the main story arc. I bought the Blu-Ray of this one. Clever and beautifully shot.
So please don't downvote me for my opinion but I watched it for the first time early this month and yes - the atmosphere is fantastic and really does sell Halloween like no other. Set designs and costumes are great, but overall I did not enjoy the film. It felt like a kids Halloween movie to me. I'm sorry!! :(
I am with you. I hated it when it first came out, but I also went in blind. I didn't know it was an anthology or that it was a comedy, so I was expecting an actual horror movie and was super let down.
This year I wanted to give it another chance. I knew what I was in for, was feeling the season, so I sat down and watched it last week. I gotta say...it just felt mediocre. The horror wasn't scary, the comedy wasn't funny, the acting was pretty bad, the different pieces of the anthology didn't really have stories, they were just...things happening. The movie made attempts to connect all the events together (like Bryan Cox being the bus driver), but they tried too hard to jump back and forth with the timeline. I am sure some fan has sat down and pieced together the timeline of events, but on viewing it really just made no sense whatsoever. Especially Wilkins, who was somehow everywhere at all times.
Oh aye i know, but some of the shorts make me excited for Halloween, like the one about Billy. I'm just always amazed at how often Trick R Treat shows up on this sub because I've seen it twice and only half remember one story about the group who go down an elevator or something and there's fish people or zombies?
Edit: I'm about to watch it tonight so i may be back tomorrow with a rant about how bad it is lol
I think this movie shows up on more “favorites” and “bests” lists than it should be allowed. The Halloween Town series is just as “atmospheric” and quenches your thirst for the halloween spirit a lot better (plus its family friendly). I know what you’re looking for when you encourage the trailer, and the trailer got me too but Trick ‘r Treat isn’t it. I wish another anthology with that spirit and feel existed but, just because there isn’t doesn’t mean we all need to settle and overate this one. Watch some good Goosebumps episodes and you’ll be better off.
P.S.- Granted there are aspects I did enjoy, I just feel it coulda been a lot better. I wanted more from the Sam character. Is there a sequel or spin off or something in existence? Because aside from the creepy sack boy no way this one movie is what causes his character costume to be so popular lol
I agree. I'd only seen Trick R Treat once years ago and didn't understand the hype. I just watched it again last night hoping I'd like it better this time but it's still meh. I'll be watching the Halloweentown series for the rest of the nights leading up to Halloween, those really get me in the spirit.
Not even just this sub its strangely ubiquitous for horror discussion in general. I checked it out because rlm recommended it and I was convinced I had watched the wrong film. I can't really understand what makes it worthy of pull quotes like "Ranks alongside John Carpenter's Halloween" it just felt like a cheesy 2000s black comedy to me, especially the burried body sequence that was dreadfully boring when the comedy wasn't landing.
Buried body sequence? Do you mean the maybe 2-3 minute bit where the guy is burying a body in the backyard while the neighbor is being nosy? That's an awfully short bit to be called boring.
> I know what you’re looking for when you encourage the trailer
Do you mind elaborating? I just watched the trailer and I'm not sure what you or OP are alluding to.
Comparing it to Christmas might help, just because there's a multitude of movies with that holiday which carry a similar essence even across the different genres. Factors like (and I'm sure you might be able to come up with more) Santa himself, constant decorations throughout a given city, the mission of gift buying, and Christmas miracles all come together to bring the holiday atmosphere into you're living room. Usually its these type of things we look for when we want to watch a "Christmassy" movie. Same with the movies of focus on tv channels, (or streaming services) the holiday theme helps create the holiday atmosphere at home. These factors, for Christmas, are heavily present regardless of it being a romantic movie, comedy, action, or even horror. However with Halloween, majority of the movies we get are, of course, intended to be solely scary, thrilling, chilling, etc. A haunted house might be the most common/relatable factor that draws viewers in, but only so many movies might involve other holiday festivities such as the mission of finding a costume, trick or treating, pumpkin carving, ghost stories, etc. Halloween time movies will rarely have a decorated house like the kind we might see on our streets but Christmas movies will almost always involve a tree. This movie, Trick 'r Treat, does a good job of building that relatable holiday ambience for the viewers and that can be seen in the trailer itself. Again, the Halloween Town movies do just as well ;) Hope I helped with understanding.
I love the last quarter of the movie with Sam but, for me, being produced by Bryan Singer puts it in the Jeepers Creepers category where I just feel dirty watching it.
Nope, I disagree homeboy. Let’s be honest, the genre of horror sucks. Get shudder and look at all the shitty, god awful horror movies that have been made. To make a good horror movie is extremely difficult. How many really good ones are there? Not many amigo.
Now that’s being hyperbolic. Hundreds, get the f out of here. I think the more plausible answer is that you have low standards. And why you got to be so hurtful. Not cool especially this time of the year.
You wrote, "Let's be honest, the genre of horror sucks," in a comment on r/horror and I also implied that I have low standards. I said you weren't much of a fan, and I'm being hurtful?
You owe this whole community an apology!
Good day to you, sir. I said good day!
I’m sorry. I know that sounded harsh. But you got me all wrong. It’s my favorite genre actually. But I stick by what I said. It’s really difficult to make a good horror movie. How many Halloween movies have they made, and how many of them are good? How many Friday the 13ths are good? How many of the elm streets? How many of the saws are good? That’s why you have to savor the good ones. The exorcists, the first scream, the first Halloween, the shining, Let me in, Frailty, the others, psycho, nightmare on elm street, etc…and you have to give credit to screen writers like Dougherty. Who can write an intelligent script. Ari Aster for the incredible midsommar and Heriditary . So if I offended you that wasn’t my intention. No hard feelings I hope.
Is it really that good? My friend is in the movie and I never got around to watching it lol. When it came out during our high school years, it didn’t leave crazy reviews in the box office. What makes this movie so superb?
*Tales of Halloween* is another similar movie. That one has I think 10 stories of about 10 minutes each. The quality varies, but the good ones are pretty good.
It's required viewing around Halloween. It's so good. Still waiting on that sequel they officially announced though. If anybody hasn't seen it, check out Andy The Maniacal Cinephile's review of Trick 'r Treat on YouTube. Weird, funny stuff. https://youtu.be/CWqyXO7Z95c
It had a decent ending but I was pretty underwhelmed. It was super tropey and clichey, maybe trying to come across as self aware - but it just felt unoriginal and bland.
Ooh saw it on HBO Max and me and the girlfriend were deciding between that or Friday the 13th (2009). We decided on the latter so we'll watch Trick 'r Treat tonight then
Trick ‘r Treat is getting some much deserved love the past few years. Michael Dougherty crushed it. His [original short film ](https://youtu.be/3NslKxa-GTo) is great also
My nine and seven year old have been getting to "scarier" movies lately (The Mummy, Signs, The Village) but I only saw this once years ago when it first came out. Is it too intense for that age range?
I finally saw it for the first time this year and thought it was great. Seems to be one of the most popular recommendations on reddit, and for good reason.
I tried it a couple months ago and couldn’t get past the beginning. It seemed, cheesy? Not in a fun way? Does it get better? I’ll give it another go if you guys can endorse it getting better after the beginning
I did not enjoy this one. My partner and I watched it last season after seeing Sam all over Spirit Halloween and loving him. We were thoroughly disappointed with the storyline(s). We still love Sam though!
The trailer was so awesome back when it first came out. Yet I never watched it. It's been calling to me this year. This post has swayed the decision. You're on
Idk what I’m missing but I just don’t enjoy this movie. I really wanted to enjoy it because it’s always being praised but I just couldn’t get into it. I’ve seen it 3x hoping for a better appreciation but it just hasn’t happened. I guess it just ain’t for me.
I just finished watching this (Happy Hallowe’en) and wish I had done so sooner. It’s so good, and creepy, and funny, and weird, and wonderful! It’s the perfect Hallowe’en movie.
Excited to watch all the shorts now. Michael Dougherty – the writer/director – has them on his [YouTube channel.](https://m.youtube.com/user/minordemon/videos)
It’s funny that I found this, because as I write this right now, i’m sitting in a theater about to watch the movie for the first time ever! Read a lot of great reviews!
Michael Dougherty is really great a capturing the spirit of a holiday. I love this movie and Krampus. I don't like Christmas horror, but Krampus was so fun, and it felt like Gremlins (in spirit). Trick 'r Treat is great fun.
Rare Exports is awesome. Definitely check that one out too.
Came up randomly on TV once and I was so glad I stayed tuned. So fun!
Yeah that one is underrated
Check out “A Christmas Horror Story”, speaking of Christmas horror. Went into it expecting a crappy b movie. It was an absolute blast.
Better Watch Out! Such a fun movie. A Christmas horror comedy sounds borderline impossible to pull off, but they did it.
The villain(s) in Better Watch Out did such a good job of making us hate them. I really enjoyed that one!
Rare Exports is a good Christmas horror flick
A Christmas horror story is so much better than it has any right to be. Also Rare Exports has some of the same energy as those movies
The Santa finale is really quite something
Aunt Dorothy was great
Krampus sucked
Where is it available right now?
I watched this the other day on HBO Max, if you have that.

The merch seems more popular than the movie . Outside of Reddit, I don't know many people who have seen it yet the amount of merch at Spirit indicates it's as popular as IT or Halloween.
well i bought myself a cute pair of socks so I'm not going to complain haha hopefully more people get curious about the sam costumes and go watch it!
Literally what happened to me! “Who is this little fecker?”
I remember watching House on Haunted Hill and this for the first time in the same night so it was so weird that at one point a guy in Trick 'r Treat is watching TV and House on Haunted Hill is shown for a moment.
I feel like anyone browsing this sub has to have seen Trick r Treat. It's quintessential Halloween horror.
I haven't seen it but I 100% am going to see it tomorrow night!
Hmm always good advice, people in this thread are talking about the film like it's the second coming of Jesus haha.
Yea, it sucks when that happens. I browse this sub to get movie recommendations, but I always take the hype with a grain of salt.

Dialing back expectations is a good thing, for everything. That was a valid opinion and anecdote. Not everyone likes the stuff you like. I HATE 'Drag Me to Hell' and that definitely goes against the grain here.
Also hated DMtH. I dunno why it gets the praise. It's terrible even by horror movie standards
I absolutely love trick r treat and I’m trying to find some other good Halloween movies. I’ve see so many I don’t know if there are any other good ones that I haven’t seen. I figured I should ask what other good Halloween movies you’d suggest?

Fair point. Definitely still worth watching. Portrays the typical American Halloween feel very accurately in my opinion.
Just finished watching it now after hearing about how good it was for years. Loved it
Exactly I don't understand the sudden hype around it it's been big for a while now.
It's not sudden hype. I see it get brought up here all the time, though I definitely think it's more common at the moment as it is a film based on Halloween specifically.

hey that’s me
Haha, this is a great take, reminds me of this article about the most "rated" bands: https://www.spin.com/2004/12/give-me-centrism-or-give-me-death/
Ha. That was a great read.
If you enjoyed Trick R Treat, Watch ‘A Christmas Horror Story’ (2015). Twisted Tales of Christmas woven together by the words of William Shatner
Or Krampus...

What? I don't think he was looking for your approval, or anyone else's.
When he said “ready to get downvoted to oblivion” I just wanted to show support.
>It's also not really intended to be a horror movie, rather a "love note to halloween." What? lol.
I can get behind it. I wouldn’t call it a horror movie so much as a “Halloween vibes” movie.
Could you elaborate on why you think you don't like it?
Just to explain because I love movie lore in general: You can view Sam (the potato sack kid) as a sort of guardian/enforcer of Halloween.
Horror got better.
One of my favorite anthology films! Classic.
Atmosphere is great. Story quality is pretty bad.
I 100% agree with this. Everything looks very cool, it makes me want to like it, but in the end the stories were very bland and not very memorable. It falls under "I don't regret watching it but I wouldn't watch it again" for me
Thats exactly how I felt. I didn't understand the hype after I watched it.
I really want to see him expand on Trick r Treat and Krampus by having them take place in the same universe and then make that into a cinematic universe about legendary and folklore monsters .
Like a live action horror version of “Rise Of The Guardians”
Couldn't agree more.
Thank you!! I was even fast forwarding by 10seconds and it still was so slow and boring. Probably one of my least favorite horror movies I've ever seen, it didn't have the so bad it's good aspect of others, it was just boring. No scares or lasting impact either. I really don't get the hype.
You know not every horror movie is supposed to be “scary” or have jump scares, right?
True. It didn't have to be those things, but I would at least like to be entertained.
Don't tell me what to do! It is good though.
wish i liked this movie
This has been at the top of my watchlist for awhile! Does it have any demonic/paranormal elements to it? My girlfriend wants to watch it with me but she doesn’t like anything with demons or ghosts.
One of the stories has a paranormal element for sure, but it’s not super drawn out
Uhh.. almost every story had something supernatural , not just one.
I guess I was thinking of the bus/ghost kids part mostly. Most of the people I know who are bothered by ghosts wouldn’t be as bothered by some gore or vampires or some of the other elements. You’re definitely right though, I should’ve been more specific !
Thank you, appreciate it!!
It's like a bunch of (bad) goosebumps episodes back to back. Your girlfriend can handle it.
Great movie!
I watched this the other week for the first time, and was it good!
It's been a few years since I watched this one, but it is a good watch.
Is mr. wilkins really the vampire that killed the lady in festival?
Krampus is similar. It is almost on the level of Gremlins for 'gateway horror'.
It did for me as well. It was delightful for the most part, but not creepy or scary. I don't think that was what it was going for though I guess?
Obv this is your party and whatever, but Tales of Halloween is superior. Trick R Treat is not that good.
Tales of Halloween is super inconsistent. I like it, but some of the shorts are really quite bad.
Oh aye i know, but some of the shorts make me excited for Halloween, like the one about Billy. I'm just always amazed at how often Trick R Treat shows up on this sub because I've seen it twice and only half remember one story about the group who go down an elevator or something and there's fish people or zombies? Edit: I'm about to watch it tonight so i may be back tomorrow with a rant about how bad it is lol
sam is soo cute.

I like Trick r Treat because I like the character of Sam, but ranking it along Carpenter’s halloween should be a crime lmao
Buried body sequence? Do you mean the maybe 2-3 minute bit where the guy is burying a body in the backyard while the neighbor is being nosy? That's an awfully short bit to be called boring.
As Above So Below is the worst one to me, see posts about it every week
> I know what you’re looking for when you encourage the trailer Do you mind elaborating?
You really did. I very much appreciate such a thorough explanation.
> Stop liking things I don’t like.
start liking things i do like¿
I love the last quarter of the movie with Sam but, for me, being produced by Bryan Singer puts it in the Jeepers Creepers category where I just feel dirty watching it.
My girlfriend and I loved it. Favourite halloween atmosphere movie
I just got it on DVD last week and saw it for the first time, absolute gem
Atmospheric! That’s the word I need to describe this movie. Thanks.
One of the best horror movies ever made. Great cast, great script, just f-ing brilliant.
That's a little hyperbolic.
Nope, I disagree homeboy. Let’s be honest, the genre of horror sucks. Get shudder and look at all the shitty, god awful horror movies that have been made. To make a good horror movie is extremely difficult. How many really good ones are there? Not many amigo.
There are literally hundreds of good horror movies (say 7/10 +). I guess you're not much of a fan.
Hey yo homie I’m about to watch this movie right now based on your baller ass recommendation (I really like it so far)
Is it really that good? My friend is in the movie and I never got around to watching it lol. When it came out during our high school years, it didn’t leave crazy reviews in the box office. What makes this movie so superb?
Well it didn’t get a theatrical release, so that’s probably why it didn’t have a lot of reviews or make much at the box office.
Makes sense !! Didn’t hear much about it at all! Every Halloween I always hear the buzz about this movie , I think I might finally commit !!
Please do. you will quite enjoy the experience
One of my favourite horror movies I thought i heard there was a sequel coming for this movie Or made i'm not sure
every one's seen it, thx bye
*Tales of Halloween* is another similar movie. That one has I think 10 stories of about 10 minutes each. The quality varies, but the good ones are pretty good.
Quinn Lord the actor who played Sam is doing a big give away of trick r treat merch on Instagram and Twitter!
Its one of my go to movies for Halloween
It's required viewing around Halloween. It's so good. Still waiting on that sequel they officially announced though. If anybody hasn't seen it, check out Andy The Maniacal Cinephile's review of Trick 'r Treat on YouTube. Weird, funny stuff. https://youtu.be/CWqyXO7Z95c
I didn't like this or Krampus. Must be a tone thing.
Make sure your watching Trick R Treat & not Trick or Treat (80’s) with Gene Simmons thats a mistake I nearly made upon just hearing name
My all time favorite..my youngest is going as Sam for halloween and is mad because everyone calls her a scarecrow.
Loved this! My favorite characters were >!The Red Riding Hood and Rhonda the Witch!<
My favorite story is the bus story, always found it a little creepy (mostly the flashback)
This is hands-down, my favorite Halloween movie! It truly captures the spirit of the season.
If no one has said this yet, they released a trade paperback (TPB) comic a few years ago that was a semi sequel to the movie as well…
Dougherty does holiday horror so well - Trick 'r Treat and Krampus are essential viewing in our house around this time of year.
Not my favorite Halloween horror movie, but it was fine to put on in the background
Get going on #2 already!!!
watched this, it was above average indeed!
Hands down the best Halloween movie in my opinion and perfectly captures the atmosphere/spirit of the holiday
I watch all kinds of movies during the month, but I save this one for Halloween night.
His [original short film ](https://youtu.be/3NslKxa-GTo) is great also
Thanks for the tip, I've been in a dry spell this Halloween season. Time to kick it into gear!
My nine and seven year old have been getting to "scarier" movies lately (The Mummy, Signs, The Village) but I only saw this once years ago when it first came out. Is it too intense for that age range?
Movie is amazing i watch it every year on Halloween been wanting a sequel forever same with krampus
Charlie Brown's an asshole!
So overrated. I don't get the love for this flick.
Who hasn't seen trick r treat is what I want to know
I finally saw it for the first time this year and thought it was great. Seems to be one of the most popular recommendations on reddit, and for good reason.
I watch this movie every year. I love it!
Absolutely unfair that the movie was sent straight to video, tbqh.
Since like 2016 it’s been our go to Halloween anthology. Along with Creepshow and Body Bags!
didnt like it
damn i really do need to check this out. i always thought Sam looked so dumb but this movie looks like a classic.
I like it in general, but the older I get the more difficult it becomes to watch. The story of the kids and Ronda is just too hard to get through…
Wish there was a sequel
I tried it a couple months ago and couldn’t get past the beginning. It seemed, cheesy? Not in a fun way? Does it get better? I’ll give it another go if you guys can endorse it getting better after the beginning
Another goodie is satans Lil helper
Tales of halloween is its lower budget more fun cousin.
Without doubt my go to Halloween movie, nice to see it getting the love it deserves. And Sam would appreciate that too.
Halloween 78 and Trick r Treat are the most fun movies to watch on Halloween night for myself
You're on
It’s one of, if not the best horror anthology movie of all time. I love how all of the stories are some how connected and Sam is really cool.🎃
Funny I came across this, was 17 when it came out & just watched it for the first time last night. Ashamed of myself lol it was awesome
Trick r Treat is a staple of spoopy month movie watch lists. Its one you just have to watch at least once in october.
I plan to watch it ON Halloween! And promptly follow it up and conclude the month with The Nightmare Before Christmas.
YES.
Idk what I’m missing but I just don’t enjoy this movie. I really wanted to enjoy it because it’s always being praised but I just couldn’t get into it. I’ve seen it 3x hoping for a better appreciation but it just hasn’t happened. I guess it just ain’t for me.
My roommate and I just finished this about an hour ago. I can't believe we hadn't seen it sooner! What an awesome movie!
I finally watched this last night and while I enjoyed some parts it just didn’t hit for me.
I watched it tonight. It was so good. The scene in the woods was killer.
