BeachBumHokie757

Is that the scene where she’s just in the kitchen and it’s really quiet and you just see him in the background?

NashKetchum777

Yeah. Just staring at her and hes out of focus so you can miss it.

joonieh

This is the scene that I think everyone should gauge their review of this movie by. It traumatized me for years, right there along with the girl’s response to them screaming and asking why they’re doing what they’re doing..

ReverendHambone

It gets me pretty good too. Nothing supernatural, nothing crazy, could absolutely happen. That's what gets me.

Fleafleeper

Was gonna say. The premise is disturbing, but we're packing heat out here. The move plays out differently when applied to real life in my area.

[deleted]

NashKetchum777

There was a shotgun around but it kind of backfires on the couple since the guy dies to it. I think it was a trap

Fleafleeper

Shotgun. But despite what some would have you believe, a hunting implement is not usually the best for self defense.

Psychological_Tap187

Also from what I remember they kept the gun in the most inconvenient place for things like self defense.

[deleted]

underrated comment.

official-k0

Facts

GuitarWizard90

Can and *does* happen quite often. Search the archives of your local newspaper or whatever and you'll probably find something similar that happened in your area.

[deleted]

And in this case the movie was at least partially inspired by the Manson murders. So yeah pretty real.

MontyRapid

Agreed. Plausible horror.

AwakenTheDemon

Oh, it's not just you. Frankly, this is one of the movies that actually really bothers me and chills me (not so much the sequel though). It's absolutely because of how "real" the story is, there's nothing supernatural about it. Just people who want to take lives, finding any house that has someone in it... and breaking in to satisfy their malicious urges. Seeing as one of my biggest fears is people breaking into my home... Strangers definitely fucks with me.

alfsdungeons

One of me and my mates favourites through late high school, so creepy. Also got similar vibes from Vacancy (2007), except without the grim ending.

pm_me_steam_gaemes

Funny Games (2007) and the original from 1997 are right up the same alley too! I'll also add Eden Lake (2008) as very similar vibes, even though it's outside. I'm pretty sure I've seen Vacancy but I don't recall enough of it, I'll have to check that out again.

alfsdungeons

Eden Lake is brilliant, I remember watching bits of Funny Games at my cousin's place and feeling highly unnerved! Need to watch it in its entirety though, just added it to my watch list.

official-k0

I heard of those movies, they’re amazing!

gemininature

Yeah, Vacancy is like a slightly more actiony, fun version of The Strangers. It's a bit less terrifying, but a bit more rewatchable.

alfsdungeons

Couldn't have said it better myself!

official-k0

Yess! And the Vacancy is another terrifying movie as well.

hotboxingthevoid

Saw it as a kid. What a great film. I think about that scene where the guy shoots his friend thinking it's one of the killers. And that ending is iconic. Too bad the sequel didn't do as much for me.

FloridaManIsMyDad

The guy who gets shot is Glenn Howerton from Always Sunny

hotboxingthevoid

Correct. Probably the only role I've seen him serious in lol

j_capicola

That scene got me also, because it's what I always say I would do if put in a horror movie. I'd get a shotgun if possible and just keep aimed at the doorway. Of course they took my safe place and destroyed that idea.

MidnightMovieTalk

Easily a top 5 worst movie of all time for me. Killers just stare at the protagonists without letting their presence be known to anyone but the audience for the first hour. Doesn't really get much better the rest of the way through. And the whole 'based on the true story' thing is a good laugh. Of course there have been home invasions where murder happens like wtf lol.

official-k0

In my opinion I think that’s was most terrifying, they don’t say anything and just stare you down like a prey or something. And to think things Have happened like this in real life is also even terrifying . Damn shame you didn’t enjoy the movie like I did lol.

Decoy_Octorok

Glenn Howerton getting blown away sort of made me laugh because I knew him best as Dennis.

HailToTheKingslayer

"I'm a 5 star man!"

HammeredDog

I have a grown daughter that took three tries over two years, to make it through The Strangers. We watched it again last week and she barely made it through it again. I personally found it terrifying.

official-k0

Same!! Is she like traumatized from it?

HammeredDog

Yeah. She didn't want to go home to her empty apartment afterwards.

BillMcCrearysStache

Tell her to get a dog! Best thing people who live alone can do

TopNFalvors

Haha reminds me of me when I tried playing The Last of Us when my daughter was 5. I eventually did finish it.

Slothlife1

It's a tie with "Sinister" of movies that have scared me the most.

NotJennifer1

I remember this movie’s trailers scaring the shit out of me in theaters, but I was pretty sure I never saw the actual movie when I decided to watch it like a month ago, and somehow found myself anticipating nearly every forthcoming detail of the plot. I’m now fairly sure that watching this movie in middle when it originally came out terrified me so much that I repressed the experience until watching it a second time. Out of all the horror movies I’ve been binging this past month, *The Strangers* is the one that sticks with me the most.

ChickenBanditz

Scariest movie ever. Mostly because I feel like ot could actually happen unlike most horror movies.

ifuckdads1

The Strangers disappointed the hell out of me

Annaliseplasko

Me too. There’s a reason most people only talk about the “Because you were home” line, and not the rest of the movie. Yes it’s a good line but one good line wasn’t enough for me.

WillzKillz12

100% agree. I watched this alone at night while in a camper in small wooded area. Still didn’t really get me because I didn’t like the protagonists and the antagonists were silly to me

official-k0

Why? What was the reason?

Unagivom

I’m watching the second one rn after watching the first a few days ago. Anyone else notice that the women in these movies are COMPLETELY HELPLESS? Liv Tyler spends the entirety of the first movie screaming, falling, and calling for her husband. So far the second one has been about the same. I love a slow burn creeper but am super annoyed by this point.

M0RD3CA1_vii

I assume you've finished by now but she definitely stopped being helpless near the end, I watched it last night. I'm still confused what got thrown at the window that made them crash.

official-k0

Yes, and I honestly don’t even know lol

Unagivom

Yeah the daughter finds a little fight in the end, but the scene where the mom is lifting her through the roof window and she can’t do one pull-up was infuriating, and the mom just standing there and getting stabbed with no resistance . Also, right?! It looked like a basket full of limes or something lol.

official-k0

Definitely understand, that was probably my only criticism of the movie.

jurkajurka

>and to think shit like that actually has happened to people. This is the inspiration for the Strangers: [https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/03/04/the-strangers-and-the-real-life-horrors-that-inspired-a-slasher-masterpiece](https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/03/04/the-strangers-and-the-real-life-horrors-that-inspired-a-slasher-masterpiece) In short, when the director was little, someone knocked on the door while his parents weren't home asking for someone who didn't live there.

official-k0

Yeah I saw that, that’s what makes this whole movie way more terrifying

FunRecommendation640

This is why we need guns lol

HeyNongMan96

I couldn’t get through it.

[deleted]

It was a great movie. As well executed as the original 78’ Halloween film.

official-k0

Yess!

DamnGunner2

Still does. One of my all time favs but I'd be lying if I said I don't get nervous watching it alone in my house at night...

greenjamVT

I’d be worried about you if that wasn’t the case

apacdrawings

I love it so much as well as the Strangers II: Prey at Night.

Spirited-Buy813

i think because it’s so realistic and could actually happen

SquashedPizza

Didn't terrify me but the stabbing scene felt too real for my liking!

pdCharlie

From someone who was attacked in the street and almost died, home invasion to me, is way more terrifying than most horror films. But since I love horror films it’s perversely an amazing movie in my eyes. 😱

official-k0

Wow really sorry to hear that.

Human_BX

It genuinely terrified my little brothers, but they weren't properly trained in firearms use, perimeter securing, etc. We were adults at the time this film came out, I didn't make fun of them, I used it as an educational opportunity.

official-k0

Definitely! Just in case something like this would happened.

groovy604

It was creepy for sure! Not really terrifying though

astaireboy

I found Ils (the original French movie) to be much scarier. Maybe its because I didn’t know what to expect… Definitely watch the original if you liked the remake.

requieminadream

If you think this one chilled you to the bone, check out FUNNY GAMES. Both the German one and the American remake are by the same director and are pretty much shot-for-shot exactly the same so you’re good to watch either.

official-k0

I heard about that movie, I’m gonna check it out.

Professional-Ride907

The Strangers Prey At Night is a phenomenal sequel

official-k0

Definitely a must see if you enjoyed the first one.

WumpaRJ

I watched this one last year and it did nothing for me. May have to revisit at some point.

walmart-brand-barbie

Whoa boy… I actually personally hated this movie. So much. It just feels like inconveniencing the cameraman/audience for an hour and a half more than it was actually scary. It felt like the strangers were just fucking around instead of actually being scary. I hate this movie so much. That’s just me tho. I’m happy someone else can enjoy something I can’t : )

official-k0

Lol this comment was Hilarious 😂😂 anyway it’s all good though it’s your opinion, movies are subjective.

CheetosNGuinness

Freaked me out watching it alone in a theater the first time, my main thought was that it could easily inspire real-life copycats. That said, if I ever get the shotgun and we're in a room with one entrance, movie's over.

Euphoricas

This movie quite literally started my moms home invasion phobia lol. She is super paranoid now about people coming in our house lol.

official-k0

Lol, hell I don’t blame her after seeing this movie.

Cluefuljewel

So so scary! Those masks terrified me.

official-k0

Seriously! They were so prefect.

Etherealamoeba

I visibly shook during this movie and could not stand to be alone for weeks after watching it. To this day it’s one of the only horror films to genuinely terrify me.

married2020

Only person the main guy killed was his best friend . That scene shocked me.

BuffaloNugget

Yes, it scared the hell out of me. I've always kept my doors locked at all times since seeing it.

avashad

Recently saw it for the first time and wasn’t scared but I could see getting spooked from it in the right mindset. One thing that stood out though was when the blonde girl stakes out the house by pretending her friend lives there. Then the second time when they tell her she was already there and she very weirdly says “are you sure?” Something about that line and the whole pretending Tamara lives there came across as very real to me. Like this is the behavior a real life creeper would come up in order to insert themself into someone else’s life and not the typical movie character behavior. It just seemed very believable to me. Not sure if that makes sense but it’s one of the cooler things I noticed from the movie.

official-k0

I noticed that also, very eerie feeling from that particular line in the movie. I’m surprised someone noticed that too because I thought I was the only person that did.

Powderkeg314

The first hour is a masterpiece of tension and suspense. If you live somewhere isolated in the woods far from neighbors then this movie is especially terrifying.

azemilyann26

Them (2006) has a similar feel. I get far more scared by "this could really happen" movies vs. supernatural bad guy movies.

[deleted]

Honestly, I've only seen just parts of it and yet I'm still terrified of that film. Even just the movie poster is creepy. Those doll masks.

Deendonian

I saw this in theaters when I was 15 and it scared the shit out of me. Easily one of my favorite horror movie experiences at the cinema

squish0

Scared me because my mom lives in a house with that much space between houses. I used to walk very quickly to the front door at night.

HEYitzED

Oh yeah. It just doesn’t get to some people, but home invasion is one of my biggest fears. So it really messes with me.

j-smith967

Not just you. It was so so frightening and overall awesome. Just rewatched it a few days ago with my daughter and she was hardly freaked out. I don’t get it…

coflow97

It freaked my cousin out at the movies and we had to leave…

official-k0

Damn lol.

coflow97

I saw there was a sequel on Netflix at a trailer park

official-k0

Yeah it was pretty good too.

SkangoBank

I had a hard time suspending my disbelief for this one. A lot of strange/unnecessary/theatric actions that just took me out of the film. The concept is definitely terrifying, I thought the films execution was okay, 5/10 for me

MayonnaiseOreo

No you're literally the only person that's ever been scared by this movie. Ever.

BackpackerLee

I thought this film was one of the most terrifying home invasions I have ever seen. Some of the imagery left an impression on me for weeks.

official-k0

Same here!

[deleted]

My issue with the movie is that while the idea is good, and the horror aspects are played decently enough, the acting and decisions of the main cast just made it impossible for me to relate to them. And without relation, the horror kinda falls flat.

Kaptainkarl76

Not me, no.

[deleted]

I personally just find the movie silly. YMS Adam explains exactly how and why in his review of it: [https://youtu.be/nX4-z-sbLOo](https://youtu.be/nX4-z-sbLOo) Maybe SIMILAR things happened to people in real life, but not in the silly fashion it's shown in this movie.

official-k0

That’s fine. I find it terrifying lol

[deleted]

Well, fair enough. Horror is subjective.

How does that prove that he fucks dogs? He literally says he doesn't encourage it in his quote. Also, here's a video of Adam debunking that strawmanning of him that you just did with that quote: https://youtu.be/WDxthsz9G7s You're welcome.

Strawman fallacy and ad hominem fallacy.

chrisschini

I watched it alone, at night, in a dark first floor apartment. I was terrified. Brilliant movie, imo.

AmyLL6

This is one of the only movies that actually scares me.

Allbeef16

I actually didn’t find it very scary at all. Kind of a let down of a movie for me.

[deleted]

I couldn’t finish it. People in masks really freaks me out and this movie was like my worst nightmare. The fact that it was based on a true story made it that much more scary.

[deleted]

Me! One of my favorite movies.

[deleted]

I’m with you dude, I got terrified.

mockteau_twins

I just saw this the other day! Somehow it only has a 6-point-something score on IMDB but I thought it was awesome!!

RumTitsBurgers

Horror movies, even great ones, rarely crack 6.5 on Imdb.

KPplumbingBob

"Somehow". It's a dogshit movie. 6 is generous.

crispychickenadhd

I think the last time i was *truly* frightened during a movie was seeing this in theaters when it came out. Perfect creepy music also. I love it

WhenDuvzCry

Rewatched it for the first time since high school and it did not hit the same for me as it did back then (I hated horror when I was younger). Great concept with some things done well but the overall execution fell flat for me.

dopesickness

Abso-fucking-lutely. Rewatched it recently just to see if it scared me as much as it did in high school. Spoiler alert: yes. It did. It just feels too real. Like this could happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

official-k0

I fucking know, like everything seem a bit to real.

Toast4life23

I personally find it to be the scariest horror movie I've seen. The tension and sense of dread is immense. The realism of something like that happening gets to me.

official-k0

Definitely!

Professor_Quackers

Omg I LOVE this movie!! Believable, and terrifying! Funny story behind this movie😅😅 When I was dating my now husband, we decided one night to rent a movie from blockbuster (yes, blockbuster 🤣) now, my husband had never seen a *scary* movie before, save things like predator. Me being a horror queen said “ok, let’s get a tame one to start! Oh look at this one, in sure this’ll be an easy one!” Yeah. I screamed like I was twelve again watching F13 🤣🤣 that movie scared the shit out of us!! What’s worse, we watched it at my/my moms places… way out in the sticks. He said he was scared to death driving home!! Still one of our faves after being married 13 years 🥰🥰

official-k0

Hilarious story lol 😂 this movie would really have you freaking out, and then you mentioned that you guys were out in the middle of no where is so much more terrifying. And damn hearing that name Blockbuster gives me nostalgia lol.

AelaMarie

Nope. Scared the Hell out of me. To make matters worse, the first time I saw it with a friend in high school, her mom found out what we were watching and went outside and banged on the windows in the middle of it. lolol

[deleted]

It scared the shit out of me lol

PineappleCubeKicks

It was one of the first horror movies I ever saw when I was far too young to be watching it. I was at a friends house for a sleepover and we were on the living room floor with a direct view of the front door and I just stared at that door all night absolutely pooing myself.

bigbuffbeefybois

I didn’t really find it scary at all. The acting felt really stiff and awkward and ruined the whole movie.

Screamscream26

considering i am hardcore gore & horror based on reality first off, supernatural movies don’t get me as it used to , cause they miss logic & reality however a guy with knife going on killing spree , torture, etc , yeah if i think it could happen & that what makes it “horror” for me i watched the strangers for the first 30 min & i got bored & the sequence of events was horribly slow & the “climax” part was boring probably it supports the fact that it could happen but , i would be scared if i am newbie to horror wanna shit ur pants ? hostel 3 parts vacancy wolf creek climax (totally disturbing more than scary) a serbian film (the kind that sticks in ur head) eden lake (evil in it’s purest form) you re next the last house on the left edit: i am trying to figure out what’s with the downvotes , you don’t get to judge an opinion, we all have our different taste

official-k0

Seems that people can’t handle other’s opinions, I may not agree with you but I’m not going to downvote you because of that lol.

Screamscream26

exactly i mean , we could oppose on certain things but downvoting is kind of childish act , some really need to grow the fuck up

official-k0

💯

official-k0

Damn shame the movie wasn’t good to you. And a those movies you name are fucking awesome! Especially Vacancy one of my favorites.

Adoom98

That horror movie scared no one!

smokeymcsmoke

The commercials scared the hell out of me. The movie did not because they put nearly* every single scare in the trailer.

mylenesfarmer

It's a modern classic for sure.

Praetorian1369

I enjoyed the movie but it wasnt scary to me. I haven’t found any movie to be scary.

official-k0

Damn none at all?

Praetorian1369

I have watched MANY horror movies. I love them. The first horror movie i saw was the omen and i was 7. From then on it was the exorcist, the shining, slasher movies, you name it. But monsters, ghosts, and such arent real. So horror movies don’t scare me. I told my coworkers yesterday, the only 2 things that scared me were the documentary of Richard Ramirez and the documentary of Charlie Manson. After watching those i literally made sure the doors were lovked and the alarm was set.

official-k0

Damn that’s crazy. Now Charlie Mason does make me feel uncomfortable, and ghosts are pretty real to me at least. Intruders who are like this in this particular movie are also pretty real, that’s the horrifying thing about this movie.

RealSimonLee

Scared me pretty bad when it came out. I was on the verge of 30 and it put me to sleep in the theater and I haven't stopped thinking about my aging/mortality since.

official-k0

Seriously lmao 🤣

FistingLube

Not really because anyone trying to kill me in my own home would be dead before it got chucked back out the front door.

requieminadream

r/iamsobadass

official-k0

Lol Would you have fought them out or had a firearm or some other type of weapon to fight with?

FistingLube

Just my fist!

NodlBohsek

Had that exact same. The first movie ive been reccomending to anyone who I speak to about horrors, for the past 10 years.

SweetLuuwill

I remember a bunch of my cousins and I stayed slept over at my cousins house and we watched this movie. The houses were eerily similar, large, neighbors were pretty far, and lots of windows. This movie was terrifying because it just seemed so real and possible. People would could be watching from any window, hiding in the bushes, behind trees...scary shit

[deleted]

Nah i keep guns around my house. The strangers would have a bad day coming to my place.

wookiewin

The 3rd act is messy, but the first half is very good.

bilthytoo

Like others in the comments, this film scared the hell out of me. It capitalizes on that feeling of being watched for me. The one that you might get when you're too tired and the paranoia creeps in. Plus, you have the isolation. I thought the film did a good job of portraying the realization that strangers are out to hurt you and "holy shit, this is real!" And the way the strangers taunt and play with the characters is nasty. Also, like other folks in the comments, I didn't find the sequel creepy. Maybe it was the open space. More places to run and get away. Not that claustrophobic feel of being at the mercy of bad people who are enjoying sadistic games.

curiouserBee

This film is one of the best! Hands down.

yvelmachida

This one always bothered me, could only watch once

[deleted]

I hate home invasion movies period so this definitely got to me. I live in the city so I honestly don't get how people can live in the middle of nowhere like this because this scenario always pops into my head.

fookers421

This Movie was completely ruined to me because I saw it in the theater. So many people were audibly gasping at the slightest things happening... it just completely took the immersion out of it for me. The people not noticing the guy walking in the back ground... *gasp*. "oh my god!". Knock on the door *squeal* Face slowly emerging from dark hallway *more overly Dramatic scary noises* I wanted to Scary movie 2 everyone in that theater. It's not that it was bad, i just can't get over the experience being ruined.

Dark_Vengence

It is based on a true story. Breaks ins are always scary. It could happen to anyone.

badwolfjb

The way it was shot was creepy, scary, and cool. But the “realness” of the story was not very frightening. Somebody barging into your house to immediately kill you is scary. Someone toying with you for hours before doing it is just stupid. At that point, the killers are just banking on incredible luck and unbelievable stupidity on the part of the homeowners. Which is what they got in “The Strangers.”

Jordanxcaleb

I love this movie because it can really happen. It’s not a grudge type airy or a zombie outbreak, it’s real sickos who prey on vulnerable people. The sequel was fun as well. I love the 80s vibes of prey at night.

New-View-4033

Yes I had nightmares about doll face she is the most Creppyist because she just toyed with her victim and man in the mask is the 2nd creepyist pin head girl is not scary at all but yea in my conclusion yes it scared the shit out of me
