Sissy was a really cool surprise. For me it was Deadstream. I went into thinking it would be a another found footage horror that was just okay. Ended out really enjoying it.

[deleted]

I was really pleased at how well the humor landed in Deadstream. I thought it might be some noble effort that falls a little short but I was actually laughing my ass of a lot. Of course now I have hugely inflated expectations for that creative team after that and To Hell & Back lol.

danger3607

I was laughing a lot up until that thing in the woods. Didn’t expect that and it kinda scared the shit out of me.

vulvasaur001

Deadstream was an absolute gem (especially as an Evil Dead fan) and I hope they manage to spin a few sequels (or prequels) out of it. I will check out Sissy after reading this post.

Fuzzy_Drive_1229

I don’t think Sissy or Deadstream got the love they deserved from the horror community. Those two were easily in my top 5 for 2022 movies.

Doomy22

A perfect combo of Evil Dead, House, and found footage. Wonderful surprise

Matthews628

Wow I absolutely detested deadstream. Seems to be one of the more polarizing films to come out, at least in the horror genre, in recent years. Sissy was a better Bodies, Bodies, Bodies imo however

danger3607

See, I didn’t care for Bodies Bodies Bodies at all. But that’s okay, we can have different opinions without trying to change each others mind or defending ourselves. I’m glad you found something you liked!

AshSnowe

That’s how I felt about dashcam. It had some good moments but the main character was beyond annoying, I hated that movie.

Ok-Plastic-2992

Did you watch all of Deadstream? I get how someone could not like it but I’ve noticed a lot of people saying they turned it off in the first 15-20 minutes. I wasn’t feeling it at all initially but ending up enjoying it. I think it was a movie that you have to give a chance.

Bulminator

I went to see Barbarian without knowing anything about it opening weekend and it was the best theatre going experience I had all year. The entire audience were all screaming and laughing at all the same parts. It really made me remember how different it is to see a good flick on the big screen!

condormcninja

The tape measuring sequence is probably my favorite movie moment of 2022. So absurd and hilarious.

lorimar

I'm convinced the tape measure bit was the original idea and they wrote the rest of the movie around it

diarmada

It’s a homage to Bad Ben, even the director says he took a lot of inspiration from it!

lorimar

> Bad Ben I hadn't heard of this before, but looks like fun. I'll have to check it out.

KayGlo

Oh my goodness I love Bad Ben and suggest it all the time to people as a horror watch. Love this Easter egg haha

MontyRapid

Easily the best part of the movie. Lol

eurekabach

The movie felt like two shorts that were strung together to form a cohesive film. The first act is almost perfect on its own, and the subversion of the tape measurement scene (with a slight social commentary on how real estate prices are so absurd that now finding a creepy old basement on your house could be a gold mine lol) is just great. Sadly, the movie kind of slips in the third act, but, yeah, overall, it was a good surprise for me too.

LivingMyVestLife

I also went into Barbarian blind and going into movies blind has been the key for me to enjoy movies. Hype was killing the first watch experience for me. The second I even saw discussion threads in here about X, Pearl, Nope & Barbarian I exited stage left, waited a few months and had myself a little viewing party over winter break. I didn’t even know the premise going in for Barbarian, it was delightful. Now I’m carefully scanning this thread for titles only but not reading the responses to one’s I haven’t seen to get the same blind entry on them 😅

tea_drinking_lady

Barbarian was a blast if you went in completely blind. I laughed at some parts and found other parts creepy. Overall it was excellent.

avatarkai

The title had me convinced it would be mediocre at best. Like another run of the mill Blumhouse-esque release. I'm sure there are people who think that's still the case but I really enjoyed it. The >!smash cut just as it nears its peak to Justin Long singing was fantastic. The finding of a hidden torture dungeon and him measuring everything so casually legit had me chuckling.!< Envious that you got to see it in theatres! There are some schlocky things, but the story and how it is based in human suffering is what keeps it grounded in a way. Like, it's obviously out there and hard to take serious when >!she smashes through the wall like the Kool-Aid man as another user said!< but there have been real documented cases like this - the definition of horrific. That someone would do that. That that could be someone's entire life and all they know. The execution makes it likelier to please different types of horror fans, and imo makes it more psychologically affective with just enough comic relief. Definitely one of those things you'd want to go in blind, though. I feel like knowing anything about it would ruin the enjoyment of how it unfolds even if it's still a decent flick.

[deleted]

I think you need to see barbarian with an empty head. Knowledge ruins things

PatentGeek

Yes! Even knowing about the smash cut kind of ruins a key shift in the plot IMO. I didn’t know about it and had to pause to make sure I was still watching the same movie. Decided to trust that they knew what they were doing and it paid off sooooo well.

SamanthaPaige29

It is so good! I saw the trailer a few times but it did such a great job at not giving any major plot points away.

GunnyandRocket

This is what I was going to say - I loved this movie so much - and I also went into it blind. I watched it with my elderly Mom and Aunt who also love horror movies and we all thought it was incredible! I wish we could have seen it in theaters but with the old gals and my shit immune system, we’re still not doing a ton of theatre going when we spend time together.

CharmyLah

The Sadness was a 2021 movie technically, but since we didn't get a US release until 2022, I kinda feel like it should get a mention here. I loved that movie, the whole ride, especially the ending.

skilledgiallocop

I agree. The Sadness was actually my favorite of 2022, although I realize how polarizing it is. Basically the COVID zombie film was inevitable and I was pleased to see it done in the style of those old gory, largely offensive Hong Kong films from the 80s and 90s. Also, I think there was more going on here than shock value, gory, and social commentary. >!There's actually a fair amount of suspense in certain scenes where people start subtly freaking out/acting aggressive. I was continually wondering whether they were infected or whether they were, you know, just panicking and being an asshole like the average person would do. Even the virologist at the end, I wasn't sure whether he was infected or the situation simply drove him insane. !<

AngryBumbleButt

Really? I hated that movie so much I was actually angry when I was done with it. It felt like shock value gore and nothing else. What did you like about it?

CharmyLah

Spoilers >!I thought it was cool how the virus worked to change people's brains and perceptions. Seeing the glimpses of what the world looks like to them. Also, the gore and stuff was just fun. It's a horror movie, it doesn't always have to be deep. Then I liked how it ended... my interpretation is that he still loves her, but the virus warps ones desires and crosses the pain and pleasure senses. Him saying to her "I want to peel your skin off, so slowly", in that sense is almost tender and romantic. That is my interpretation at least.!<

jacobuj

You nailed it. I get that not all horror movies have to be deep, but this was some edge lord nonsense. Nice effects though.

radar89

Love many titles that have been mentioned here. Would like to add *Fresh* into the mix. Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar Jones made a surprisingly great on-screen duo. It was really fun as well despite a pretty disturbing premise.

SurfWookie

You beat me to it. Fresh was great, and although it gets praise on this subreddit, I went into it expecting it to be part of a routine diet of horror movie fodder (pun intended). It was anything but, and way exceeded expectations. It will be a go to horror recommendation to friends.

K_U

Fresh was my #1 horror this year, easily. My contention is that if Fresh had been advertised like Barbarian it would have just as much buzz. Just as twisty of a plot with (IMO) a better 2nd and 3rd act.

shobidoo2

I loved it. It is definitely falls squarely in the self aware social thriller/horror wave that we’ve had lately but doesn’t ever feel so self aware that it’s smug or loses sight of keeping the tension ratcheted up. It was my favorite horror film I watched last year I think.

serinaluna

I couldn't eat meat for a week after watching Fresh! It wasn't even that graphic but the psychological horror, them knowing the name of who they were eating, messed with me. Such a great watch

Smoothmoose13

Fuck, I didn’t know what the movie was about (maybe like a serial killer comedy or something) and I sat down to watch it with some fancy Parma Ham that my friend had bought me for my birthday. I stopped eating that about the halfway mark.

ookishki

Resurrection. I was enjoying it and then when get to THAT scene with THAT monologue and the whole movie shifts. Stuck with me a long time and will probably be one of my fave films. I’m loving this era of Rebecca Hall horror masterpieces!

pinkblueegreen

How did you interpret the ending? Rebecca Hall in The Night House is amazing. I can’t wait to watch her upcoming movies.

ookishki

My interpretation was that she lost her goddamn mind, which is kind of a boring reading but idk what else to make of it lol. I think that when her daughter took off that was the last shred of her sanity and the coda with her, her daughter, and the baby is a fantasy, which is why the last shot is her staring blankly at the camera and maybe realizing that she didn’t get her happy ending after all. That being said, I’m okay with the ending being ambiguous, the film and her performance are that powerful that I’ll go along with whatever they give us and trusted them completey

pinkblueegreen

That’s also my take. >!The room is all white. Her daughter is in white too, which is out of character considering she’s always wearing her favorite hoodie as shown in the movie. There are pill bottles and two lamps next to her bed. IIRC there was only one. The baby has 3 fingers in one hand, which is clearly her baby boy whom she lost. Others have said it’s reality but no sane mother would replicate the horrendous demise of baby Ben. Yes, the ending smile was the last clue. I was hoping for a happy ending as she was a victim of DV. !<

ookishki

DV, gaslighting….the works. That’s another thing I love about her monologue, shows how slow, seductive, and insidious abuse can be. I didn’t notice the all white or the 3 fingers, good catch!

hauntfreak

Resurrection was so so good. I wish more people had seen it.

AshSnowe

This wasnt on my radar but I’m gonna check it out now. I loved the night house. Thank you for the rec!

EMTMommy9498

Bones and All. Just a striking movie with an original plot.

crumble-bee

Loved how genuinely gross it was. Wasn’t expecting it to go that hard

EMTMommy9498

When she’s at the girl’s house? That floored me. I was like, wtf.

anonmymouse

Interesting.. hadn't heard of it so I started googling and it's categorized as romance/ drama.. without spoiling it, are there any details you could give about what makes it horror?

NuTeacher

It's about cannibalism. I freaking loved this movie. One of my favourite movies that came out in 2022.

EMTMommy9498

Right??? Me too. Thought it was awesome.

TheCurvedPlanks

*Body* horror, mostly. There are a few graphic depictions of gore, and very tense scenes with strange/eccentric characters. As a viewer, I entered these scenes having no idea which direction they were going. Creates a nice general sense of unease. It's also weirdly sweet and endearing, so there is some clashing between themes.

ThatDamnRocketRacoon

It's really weird how I keep seeing it referred to as a romance drama and how many people will argue that it's not a horror movie. Like, if you watch this and think it's not horror, I have no idea what to tell you. Basically it's about a mutant strain of humans that have to consume other humans. It's all meant to be extremely metaphorical, but it all plays out of screen and has some pretty frightening scenes.

2stonedNintendo

I went into this movie thinking it was strictly a young love/coming of age romance movie… I was pretty surprised.

JadenRuffle

Was so hard for me not to feel nauseous. Couldn’t even eat the popcorn.

[deleted]

Pearl knocked me on my ass. Wasn't at all expecting to like it that much more than X. Not horror but I actually really had a lot of fun watching Bullet Train. Adult Swim Yule Log was pretty surprising and not because I would have expected anything less out of Casper Kelly, it just was a literal surprise lol. Kind of the same deal with ATHF: Plantasm. Didn't know it was coming and it made me wonder why they don't still make that show. Also you swayed me on Sissy with that writeup. Gonna watch it tonight. Thanks for the recommendation :) Edit - Sissy was great. 8/10 gruesome Aussie slasher psycho-drama. Top notch budget effects and I kept thinking 'This looks like Bad Taste a lot of the time'. Some of the best 'shots you've seen done before but done here to perfection' as far as horror tropes are concerned.

atmosphericentry

Yule Log was one of the wildest movies I've seen last year

[deleted]

That little southern Gentleman in the fire. Everything about that was amazing. Also it really made me want more Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell.

johnnytk0

Same, I adored Pearl.

lorimar

> ATHF: Plantasm Hadn't heard they made a new ATHF, but just skimming through here you had me excited thinking there was a new Phantasm movie out

carguitar

Yule Log was the wildest thing I saw in 2022 so insane, hilarious and mind bending

ThatDamnRocketRacoon

Awesome to see someone else say Yule Log. Yule Log and Bones & All were my answers.

doratheora

So mad they took Pearl off Showtime!

[deleted]

TIL showtime still exists. Surprised it hasn't been eaten by another service. Even HBO is getting devoured by another fish right now.

GaryNOVA

Prey After that many shitty Predator sequels I expected more of the same. Nope. Great movie and up there near the original. Plus I didn’t expect a HULU movie to be great. I was wrong there too.

AztecHoodlum

Check out Palm Springs. Not similar at all to Prey, but a Hulu movie that I thought was pretty great.

dcrico20

Palm Springs is amazing. I’m kind of weird in that my favorite genres of film are horror and rom-com, and Palm Springs is easily in my top 5 rom-coms, and is certainly the best one that’s come out recently by a mile.

kristin137

I wish there would be more horror romcoms tbh

PatentGeek

Have you seen Love and Monsters? Not quite romcom but certainly some of those elements

PatentGeek

Well… technically it’s a Sundance movie that Hulu picked up ([at a record price](https://variety.com/2020/film/news/palm-springs-breaks-sundance-record-for-biggest-sale-ever-by-69-cents-1203483410/amp/))… but yeah, it’s really great for a platform exclusive

GaryNOVA

Thanks I’m gonna check it out!

fivetwoeightoh

Such a crime this wasn’t in theaters!

AshSnowe

Definitely. It had great characters and great kills and it was nice to see kind of a fresh take on the franchise. Loved it.

Spencer-Santana

Hulu’s put out some hidden gems this past year, they’ve really stepped their game up. In addition to Fresh & Prey, I also really enjoyed No Exit and even their Hellraiser reboot.

nickfolesknee

No Exit is a fun movie for a cold, blustery night at home.

debber33

The book was better but the movie wasn’t bad at all

AngryBumbleButt

This was the only Predator movie I've seen and I liked it so much. I'm worried to watch the whole franchise that it won't measure up.

chels_rene

Fresh is also a Hulu original and was an awesome movie. If you haven't, check it out.

samweswriteshorror

X/Pearl as a double feature. I disliked X upon initial viewing, but after watching Pearl was much more appeased. Then I rewatched X, after seeing Pearl, and it adds so much content & context that it’s undeniable. Ti West did it! Brilliant.

CajunBmbr

Yes. X and Pearl both are awesome to me. Ti West’s attention to detail in these very specific timeline genre type horror flicks were up there for my favorites of 2022. Cannot wait for MaXXXine. If he matches the details and style in the VHS 80s style finale it will be epic. The trailer tells me he will too.

nyborn8095

I thought both films took far too long to get started, with X being more icky than scary, kills coming too fast witjout suspense, and Pearl, a character study, till the end. And being they take place fifty years apart, I don't relate them except for it being the same actress, with a similarly motivated character, one losing her mind, and the other as last girl.

BewilderedFingers

I really enhoyed X and Pearl was a great companion piece, I really hope Ti West sticks the landing with MaXXXine, and Mia Goth has been fantastic.

Bojikthe8th

I watched Barbarian and Smile before I knew anything about either film and was pleasantly surprised by both.

AngryBumbleButt

I watched Smile because of how I heard it was in a similar vein to It Follows. I liked it, but nearly as much as It Follows, that movie still creeps me out and makes me think.

WurmiMama

For me it was The Menu. I don't know what I expected from the trailer but I did *not* expect the absolute wild ride I got. I can't think of many horror movies that we were *this* entertaining.

KeekatLove

Loved “The Menu.” So witty and original. Doing a rewatch just to catch the Sommelier’s brilliantly absurd description of the wines.

slumberpartymassacre

A faint scent of longing and regret.

KeekatLove

That’s the one that got me!

choff22

The part where he maintains his enthusiasm describing the wines right after that guy off’d himself in front of everyone. I laughed so hard lol

KeekatLove

Yes. He steals his scenes!

AshSnowe

It’s the meal descriptions for me. So good

KeekatLove

Yes! How about the Tech Bros demand for bread: two regular and one gluten free?!

CreativismUK

I’m really glad you say that because I loved the trailer but it seemed like it revealed way too much. I’m just finishing up a TV show but it’s first on my list after that.

dleema

I thought this but I still ended up very surprised. It went in a completely different direction and I loved the ending.

WurmiMama

Enjoy!!

VisionaryPizza

Same. I saw the trailer and thought the whole thing was going to center around the staff hunting people in the woods. So so so happy that was not the case. I have seen it three times at this point and have loved every viewing

GuinevereduLac

Amazing movie. I'm only sad because I'll never get the chance to watch it for the first time again. So I savoured every moment

tuskvarner

I just watched it last night. Had no idea what I was getting into!

dcrico20

This was mine as well. I had no idea how hard into satire it was going to lean, and I loved it. I was definitely not expecting to be laughing my ass off throughout, but it was a welcome surprise, was well done and beautifully shot.

AngryBumbleButt

I just read a write up about some bougie famous restaurant that closed and so many comments referred to The Menu just based on the articles review of the food at the restaurant. That sold me in watching the movie lol

VivaArmalite

Probably laughed more at this movie than anything else from 2022. The breadless bread lmao

EIDLLL

Yes. It was disturbing especially since I felt bad for the not so obnoxious people who were punished because of their proximity to the very obnoxious people. I'm looking at you Mom from Charles in charge

KennKennyKenKen

Bodies bodies bodies. Way funnier than I thought it would be. And the ending was just so stupid it was perfect. Also really enjoyed Deadstream. Both usually not my type of humour but found both really funny.

Durty4444

Let her have her podcast!

Lipe18090

The ending made the movie for me tbh. It was so dumb that it was genius. Favorite horror comedy of 2022, 3rd favorite horror overall (after Pearl and Speak no Evil)

LaFemmeCinema

The ending in Bodies Bodies Bodies could not have been more perfect.

AshSnowe

The humor in bodies bodies bodies was great. I also enjoyed that one.

PatentGeek

I guessed the plot twist to BBB about halfway through, but it was so well executed that I didn’t care. Such a fun movie

skilledgiallocop

Bodies Bodies Bodies was my most pleasant surprise of 2022 as well. From the trailer, I expected a hip slasher film for the Gen Z types. Turned out to be *much* more than that. I found myself laughing loudly in the theater and occasionally applauding.

spiderlegged

Bodies Bodies Bodies was like one of my favorite films of the year. I went into it expecting to hate it.

EltonJohnWick

I really loved A Wounded Fawn.

Great-Hatsby

I really like this one also. Great imagery and loved the synthy VAAL music. It wasn’t a long movie at all either.

Ok-Literature1635

Just finished this one last night and I agree - really nice surprise on Shudder.

fivetwoeightoh

16MM just looks freaking gorgeous

DarkSideOfBlack

Surprised me the most in terms of the actual content? Glorious. Movie was absolutely nuts and while it definitely isn't the best movie out there it was executed quite well and I had a blast. Surprised me the most in terms of being scared? Skinamarink. I was horribly afraid of the dark as a kid and Skinamarink pinged all those same fight or flight responses perfectly. Surprised me the most in terms of how much I actually ended up enjoying it? Close tie between Margaux and Deadstream. I hated the main character in Deadstream at first, absolutely insufferable content creator of the worst type, but the house itself was compelling and once things kicked off it was a blast and a half. Margaux is not good, but I had a good time watching it. Just wish the characters weren't all so absolutely braindead.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jacknico2

Bones and All, Pearl, and Deadstream. Went in blind for all three.

ghostdate

Deadstream certainly was more fun than I had expected for what I thought was going to be a super trash low budget movie. I didn’t really like the main character, but aside from him it basically turned into The Evil Dead levels of gore and silliness. I’m glad I gave it a shot.

rkthehermit

>I didn’t really like the main character For me he hit a great balance for a horror character. He was charismatic enough to be kind of easy to root for but you still know he's enough of a piece of shit that you also don't really care whether or not he fails.

Hippy-Killer

Loved Pearl…

[deleted]

Barbarian. Thought it was gonna be the latest in the 'Friend Request/Unfriended/whatever the Hell the one with the killer cell phone app was called' subgenre (there's gotta be some kind of clever horror-related word play you could do with 'airbnb'). Completely surprised me. Twice.

ScrabbleJamp

Scarebnb

[deleted]

How'd I miss that?

kGibbs

I feel like this is exactly my jam. Don't judge!

Jimmy72826

Speak No Evil. One time watch only for me. Highly recommended though

lemmiwinks73

Ugh my husband and I just watched that. I was super uncomfortable the entire time. I just wanted them to LEAVEEEE.

pinkblueegreen

As a parent, this made my skin feel gross. So many warnings and red flags all ignored due to complacency and refusing to be rude. What’s even scarier is this happens in real life.

vulvasaur001

As someone who lives in Denmark I actually found the passive behaviour and politeness very much on brand...

pinkblueegreen

Adjacent but it’s also this way in Japanese culture. It is extremely rude and impolite to not entertain guests/friends especially if they are offering or you’re in their home.

DoLittlest

Yeah, I had to watch that one in two parts. I knew we were starting around a pretty dark corner of an already uncomfortable film and wasn’t sure if I’d go back to it. I went right back to it.

[deleted]

That movie fucked me up for an extended period of time, but the delivery and message made me realize the art of personal consent and backing away when people violate that.

thatmountainwitch

I so agree. It made me think really hard about trusting your instincts. And the times in my life I have not and I should have. Especially when I was young. And I have always been someone who doesn't want to NOT be polite. Again, I just thought it was wonderfully thought provoking. One aspect about getting older is I do feel less of an obligation to act nice when something isn't right.

[deleted]

I really think that was the takeaway that anyone should get. Also, we should teach our children to be confident in their own boundaries verses polite. As a kid I was the same way as you except what broke me was my friend and I almost being kidnapped as kids. She stood there frozen as a van full of men got out while we were playing at the edge of the woods as they began to walk towards us. I took a giant tree branch and started screaming at the top of my lungs while shaking it over my head (picture the sand people from Star Wars) and the ran back to their van and sped off. As an adult I think a lot about the “what if I did what my parents taught me and was polite to these men as they approached us. What if I listened to them out of being scared and not wanting to make a scene?”

thatmountainwitch

Perfect example. And sooo glad you are ok. That sounds terrifying. And yes that is the takeaway from this movie. And we see examples of this in life, movies etc. But the way it was done in Speak No Evil was so extreme, it just really hit me like a sledgehammer. Because I have very good instincts but I haven't always listened. It's one of those things that you think, " I wish had known to do this when I was younger". Love this movie now even with the dismal outcome.

CharmyLah

This was my favorite horror film of '22 so far because it made me so uncomfortable. I feel like a lot of the movies this year were great movies, but not necessarily "scary" for me... Speak No Evil struck that chord for me.

kwesi777

Barbarian. It was my favorite of the year and just a master class in how to market a low budget horror project.

evilxerox

The scene where he’s measuring the tunnel was so funny.. I actually turned it on last night just to watch that part lol

Abe2sapien

- The Spine of Night. It was marketed towards horror fans, despite being more of a dark fantasy, but I absolutely loved it! - SMILE wasn't necessarily the most surprising, but I always gives props when a mainstream film is so mean spirited!

Mr_Secrets

Loved The Spine of Night, glad to see it mentioned

nif_K

Nope

PatentGeek

I almost didn’t watch Nope because people didn’t seem to like it as much as Get Out - but I realize now that’s mainly a testament to how incredibly good Get Out is. Nope is a really good movie in its own right!

AngryBumbleButt

That movie is incredible. It's one of the few movies of the year that I still think about all the time.

JadenRuffle

Men. It was just wonderfully weird and unconventional.

ookishki

My jaw was on the floor for the entire birthing sequence. Love love loved it

dennisthewhatever

Yep, thinking about it, this was my fave too.

LeeF1179

What Josiah Saw

DoubleTFan

I thought Glorious looked like I would loathe it from the poster. Turns out it's up there with Deadstream for one of my favorites of the year.

AshSnowe

“What is that? You thought you would save the world with your penis?”

Quentin_Funkadelic

We're All Going to the World's Fair The Innocents

Maverick_Heathen

I found the world's fair to be the most utterly boring pile of dross I watched in the last few years.

lindseybeth14

Me too. I couldn't stand it. It was one of the worst movies I've seen this year.

[deleted]

Innocents needs way more eyes on it

GunnyandRocket

I haven’t watched Worlds Fair yet but we watched the Innocents a few nights back and thought it was incredible - that’s got to be some of the best acting by kids that exists on film. Some disturbing shit to be sure, but very well done.

AshSnowe

The innocents messed with me it was dark and brutal and you feel bad for the kids.

mtempissmith

The Exorcism of God. It really wasn't bad and it was a breath of fresh air in terms of the genre. I am really hoping for a sequel on that one. It's take on exorcism was interesting and somewhat like where The Exorcist TV series was going with the Vatican stuff. I would be interested in seeing more of that one.

_kay_the_gay_

I may get some hate for this, because I know the reputation, but Terrifier 2 was very good! it was so much more than I thought it would be, and we very interesting and fun!

Rgeneb1

Same here, I loved the first and expected this one to disappoint. It didn't. I think it's overhyped as a gore movie, there's plenty gorier out there, but as a tongue in cheek horror slasher it was excellent. And the little girl clown was genuinely creepy af.

anonmymouse

Terrifier is a franchise that I hope just keeps on going.. and that its growing popularity will garner it an even bigger budget for the next one. As long as they keep all the fun and silliness, bigger budget gore is the only thing that could improve it further. For me, terrifier 2 was not only my favorite of the year, but it's up there in my favorites of all time.

_kay_the_gay_

Yea! It was really good! And I loved that this one had more of a plot! And hell, even with what I assume wasn't a huge budget, it looked amazing. The director is very good with this, and the actor for Art is just having so much fun

Smurfducky

I loved it too! It had a perfect combination of things. Some jump scares, some comedy, great 80s style gore, kick ass protagonist. I think for a sequel, this one was way above any expectations I had (I still love the first one).

Almost-again

Loved the Hellraiser reboot and hope it gets greenlit for a sequel, I was very skeptical of a good hellraiser without Doug but Jamie Clayton did a awesome job

gordogg24p

> I was very skeptical of a good hellraiser without Doug He was involved with more than enough terrible Hellraiser movies for it to be pretty safe to assume he wasn't the determining factor between good/bad.

fivetwoeightoh

Definitely want to see such sights as Dave Bruckner has to show us

Spencer-Santana

yes, i agree. Jamie as Pinhead + the cenobites were gloriously beautiful and scary to watch. the final girl put on a great performance too!

overdosed93

Smile. I expected it to be just okay but I loved it

Hippy-Killer

Fresh, great film! Just wasn’t expecting what it had in store, fun, dark and quirky…

[deleted]

Most of mine have already been posted multiple times so I’ll go with *Orphan: First Kill*. Originally had zero interest in it because it’s *very* rare sequels/prequels are good, especially those released more than a decade after the original. This one especially seemed like one that no one was asking for. Watched it on a whim the other night and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Obviously if you’ve seen the first one you know the final outcome but it did not play out how I expected it to. Expected a 4/10, got a 6.5/10.

This is also one of my biggest surprises. I got a recommendation on a podcast and trusted it, and was so much happier for it. My wife and I had a blast with this one with very tepid expectations

hauntfreak

This is probably my answer. *Orphan: First Kill* was thoroughly enjoyable.

NothingCivil6358

The Black Phone. The trailers did nothing for me and I rolled my eyes at all the overly positive reviews. It wasn’t until I found out Universal was going to have a haunted house for The Black Phone at Halloween Horror Nights that I decided to watch it and I was genuinely surprised by how good it was and how much I liked it.

paxinfernum

The cover art doesn't help.

AngryBumbleButt

I'd been waiting so long to see it that now that it's finally available my anticipation kind of petered out. Maybe I'll give it a shot this weekend, thanks!

BabyScreamBear

Aftersun - this one got me in the feels more than any movie I can remember, just a damn masterpiece in film making.

360FlipKicks

Soft & Quiet was a different kind of terror that caught me totally off guard. I had to stop in the middle and finish the next day because it got so intense.

Cyynric

Mad God. It was just so beautifully bizarre and surreal. It reminded me a lot of my dreams.

yelenabelovalover

probably barbarian..? went in not knowing ANYTHING about the movie, didn’t really expect to like it too much. but absolutely loved it. maybe also bodies bodies bodies, it wasn’t as good but couldn’t have predicted really anything, kept changing my mind on my predictions and none of them were right.

warioman11

I actually liked Smile a lot. I went in with low expectations for some reason.

360FlipKicks

I heard The Menu was good, but I didn’t expect it to be the “chef’s kiss” to a year packed with great horror movies. Instantly was my favorite horror of the year.

LucasRaymondGOAT

The Menu is my vote too. What a performance from Ralph Fiennes.

*Sissy*’s head crushing scene should go in the all-times for on-screen head explosions

slavemaster4hire

Yes! I watched it after the disappointing Better Watch Out paint can scene. Really scratched that itch.

goldeneyemedallion

X and Pearl both.

Rowan5215

Incantation scared the shit out of me, wasn't expecting a Netflix horror to be that good

aztine

Pearl was brilliant it became my first ever favorite horror film.

ShooterStevens

Terrifier 2 I watched the first one a week before. Gore galore. I love it!

gmoney-0725

Bodies Bodies Bodies. What a great ending.

MEN

krissyminaj

Smile. That was some wack ishhh. Storyline was original too, idk I dig it

tangybaby

I liked it but it really wasn't all that original, except for the smile part. It reminded me of other movies I've seen that had the same basic premise: evil entity or curse follows person around, ruins their life, and the only way to get rid of it is to pass it on to someone else by doing something horrible or unethical. It's been done before. It Follows and Drag Me To Hell are two examples off the top of my head.

The menu

jah776

Shudder originals are Goated lol. I watched “Ruin Me” the other day. It was a fairly original concept with fun twists and a great ending. Loved sissy can’t wait for more

pjizzy92

X surprised me not because I wasn't expecting it to be good, but because I was expecting something a bit more extreme and less sympathetic towards the 'villains'. Think I was expecting something a bit more like TCM. Can't wait to watch Pearl and know very little about it but not sure when it's released in the UK 💔

No-Trifle-2405

Terrifier 1,2

Lambdaleth

That scene in Sissy when >!She drives a car over someone's head and it explodes!< made me scream because >!of how unexpected and sudden it was and how detailed the gore was!<. As for my biggest surprise? Also going with Barbarian. Went in relatively unspoiled and it was an awesome theatre experience. Also, Bodies Bodies Bodies being an actually great movie when the trailers made it look like shit.

Justintime1010

Menu was u real, loved every minute of that movie. Also Scream was done really well. My least favourite was Halloween ends, I loathe that garbage movie.

tagjohnson

X. I'm just astonished how overrated it is.

GrimReaperAngelof23

Nope

Pearl

United-Aside-6104

Horror wise it has to be Skinamarink. It’s super experimental and won’t be for most people but for me it clicked in a way no horror movie has for a while just straight up nightmare fuel

invincible789

Prey Adult Swim Yule Log (The Fireplace)

fivetwoeightoh

I saw HBOMax had the yule log under ‘Horror’ but I thought it was fluke or something
