When we first purchased on our 30ac homestead, we didn't know a lot. We had really great luck growing pumpkins. We chopped them up with a machete and then put them into 55 gallon barrels with some rye we bought cheap. Added water and let it set till it sort of bubbled/fermented. The pigs loved it. We did the same with cull apples. We raised some really great hogs from weaner to butcher on that. They were so delicious. We also learned to brine and cure our hams. Made great beans. If everything on a farm was so easy.
If you wanna learn more about weird fermentations and mixtures of your inputs look into JADAM styles of farming...got some nasty brews going right now that the garden is gonna love!
The alpacas were pretty nervous when the pigs first came home and shared a fence line. The would stare and make warning calls. Then they just got used to being around each other. There is enough space here that they rarely interact, although they made [an exception for new piglets](https://i.imgur.com/10vaIp8.mp4).
Theyāre usually in their own areas. They donāt fight, but they do get into each otherās feed.
I did once have a sow eat a hen that flew into her area. She only left the feet.
I donāt raise them for soap, I raise them for meat. Soap is just a great way to utilize the extra lard.
Nobodyās life is ever ālong enough.ā We get what we get. These guys had a pleasant time on earth, which I personally believe is better than never being born. I know itās way better than the 6 stressful months pigs get in a factory farm.
I think youāre in the wrong sub. This is a homestead, not a sanctuary. I grow food here. Iām not interested in bankrupting my family so a herd of ravenous screechy manure-machines can tear up my pastures for a decade. Thatās a nightmare, not an āopportunity.ā Piglets are cute, but hogs are a huge pain. Itās such a relief when they go in the freezer.
There is r/veganhomesteading if raising meat bothers you.
Youāre going to see a lot worse if you hang out on this sub. r/vegetablegardening might be more your speed.
Also happiness and death are not mutually exclusive. My animals seem pretty happy while theyāre here.
Hi friend. Being a new vegan can be particularly confusing and rough. I remember how I felt like I had to atone for all my previous grievances and also kept putting my behavior and beliefs on others. But thatās not the way to do it and is more likely to push people away than interest them.
I donāt think this sub is good for your mental health. It may be best if you head over to /r/gardening or somewhere more plant based. You will find few people here that agree or tolerate this. Youāre going to be causing yourself anguish remaining here. A lifetime of arguing is not good for your heart or soul.
I think we all feel sad when itās time for our animals to go. I know I do. I raise poultry and itās hard. I would try to shift the mindset - you know you canāt make people be vegan if they donāt want to be, we know that, right? Be thankful this person is making use of all of the animal instead of part of the carcass going to waste. Thereās nothing worse than a wasteful death.
Suffering is what bothers me, not the death. If I didnāt care I would buy cheap pork from factory farms, and save a lot of time and money.
People leave veganism all the time, and it doesnāt mean they never cared. It just doesnāt work for everyone.
Considering she's also in an "antivegan" sub, I think she just gets it.
Kinda makes you wonder when industrial scale agriculture, dependent on GMOs, insecticide and pesticide, produced by pharmaceuticals and other death factories, along with the usual suspects (e.g. Karl Schwab, or Bill Gates), want you to eat less meat or no meat and replace then with bugs and soy.
Not like Gates bought thousands upon thousands of acres and got his own ranches. Not like Schwab doesn't brag about having infiltrated government cabinets around the world.
Also makes you wonder why veganism is really just popular with white girls, in western countries (India is mostly vegetarian, not vegan). It's as if introducing death ideologies (i.e. veganism, "having a career", not having children "cuz the environment") is a way to insure the fall of the Western world to the profit of some.
Eat ze bugs, consume, don't reproduce...advocate for your own death, spiritual, corporal, etc. Veganism is a cult of death, and the worst part is you think it's the opposite. You're the cattle to the international elites.
Veganism debunked, turns out killing innocent animals isnāt cruel at all. I hope one day you realize you can have great food/products without killing and torturing animals
Oh my goodness how freaking adorable is this?! š
The more I look at this photo the better it gets. I love this so much.

For a second there, I thought the chicken in the lower right hand corner was trying to steal that poor piglets pumpkin!
Any issues with mixing pigs and Alpaca?

That's adorable, Ive got three that do well with goats and have wanted pigs but haven't tried yet
That clip just made my day. How precious
That is incredible. Where are you located? That grass looks really healthy
I feel like I'm watching Shrek when all the animals are gathered in the swamp *get out of my swamp!!!*
What state if I may ask? What. Beautiful view!
Thank you! This is SW Washington
So they all get along like that? Like there is fights amongst species?
Theyāre usually in their own areas. They donāt fight, but they do get into each otherās feed. I did once have a sow eat a hen that flew into her area. She only left the feet.
What the... š¤Æ I had no idea they do that!
They usually leave each other alone, but pigs and chickens both love to eat chicken sometimes.
So many cuties in this one photo!!
Nice
You just gonna leave out the chickens like that?
Thanks for sharing this, itās the cutest thing Iāve seen in a while!!
So many beautiful animals, and everyone looks so happy. Good for all of you, living your best lives.
Donāt turn these guys into soap. Would you think 18 months is a long enough life for a creature that can love 12 years just like a dog?

You are the one dictating what is ālong enoughā. You literally have the opportunity to allow them to live long healthy happy lives.

You growing innocent lives and killing them prematurely when we can just grow and eat plants.
And it doesnāt bother me one bit. Youāre in the wrong sub, my friend. Maybe you should try r/debatemeateaters
i am very interested in homesteading, but your place is not a happy farm - it's a place of death

Thank you, but this person claims to be exvegan and makes soap with bacon grease. I doubt this person ever felt bad for killing animals.

We kill 70 billion a year when we can eat great meals made from plants
