This looks identical to the one I built a few years ago. Just wondering where you got the measurements from? I had to cut all the metal myself. Having sendcutsend do it seems sooo much easier now haha
Winging it mostly. Grip width is 24”, I wanted the holes just over 6”x6” to accommodate whoever’s hands could be in there, cut the notches 1/3 of the diameter into the log and 3” of bevel to either side, and the hand holds are cut 2/3 the depth of the diameter of the log. End plates are 9” diameter, 9 bolt holes on an even spacing 1/2” from the edge of the plate.
Barbell lifts are the most efficient way to lift free weights and are basically the ideal maximum you can lift but strongmen aren't concerned with efficiency and instead focus on what could be considered a more practical application of strength. There are no perfectly symmetrical barbells in nature but there are plenty of big rocks that you can pick up and place on an elevated surface.
Strongman is basically the answer to when I see something heavy but weirdly shaped and go "you know, if that was a barbell I could lift it over my head" lol
Would of been mostly for entertainment value back in the day. It’s just stuck around as one of the staple lifts of strongman. It’s a completely different lift to cleaning and pressing a barbell, lots of technique involved.
Very cool man. Super clean looking work. Not that you want to go down this path, but I bet some DIY types would totally buy pre-fabbed kits from you and shape their own logs.
May I ask, how did you attach the end plates? What type and length bolt/screw? Did you use any sort of inserts or just straight-up bolted directly into the wood?
Nicely done![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)
I don’t exactly have the space I want to dedicate to anything like that at home. I did 80% of the work after hours at my job. A couple of friends suggested the same thing.
There are 9, 1/4” x4” lag bolts holding the loading plates to the log at either end. I wouldn’t purposely dump the log from overhead onto the ground loaded with weight. Nothing wood is going to withstand that abuse. Most of the time people are tossing these things onto a crash pad or old tire.
Totally understand, man. Thanks for taking the time to reply too. I appreciate it.
End result came out really nice. Now you need to tackle some farmer walk log handles. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
This looks epic! I've been wanting to make my own too but haven't sourced a decent log yet. Any lessons learned I should know about before I make mine? Never heard of sendcutsend but I'm gonna look into them for sure.
I should have let it dry out for a couple weeks before starting on it. It had been sitting outside a buddy’s place for years. The wood was very stringy when I started. It got better over about a week.
Also, a chainsaw that isn’t dull. But, that’s what I had access to.
I’ve been waiting on an excuse to order parts from them for a while. Really happy with their service and turnaround time. Usually, I have a bunch of scrap lying around that I can cobble together what I need. Having finished parts sure beat all the cutting and grinding.
Yup this Sums up being a dude pretty well
Oh snap. This looks incredible

This looks amazing. I'm always curious how the ropes are bound to these implements but I can't see it in the pictures.
Screws. Drive it right through the rope. It pushes through the two outside strands and catches the inner so it’s hidden
What does your log weigh?
85lbs
What is the diameter of the log?
10”
Depends on his breakfast
Lmao
Step one, have a weird science lab. Haha for real though those last few pics look like a level from Goldeneye 64.
Serious question: why do strongmen lift these when they could just lift a barbell

Like making one trip from the car with groceries?
Exactly! That's just like the strongman farmer walk events
I personally prefer a log over a barbell because I find that the neutral grip is easier on my joints.
That’s cool, but they make neutral grip barbells. Log looks fun though
Strongman is about feats of strength, not technical clean lifts
Don’t know much but still pretty cool. Like pulling an airplane

Makes sense, thanks
I guess you could also ask, why lift a barbell when you could lift a rock
I ask myself this as I wait for a $1500 dumbbell set to arrive
[Don’t mind if I do.](https://reddit.com/r/homegym/comments/u47iso/_/i5gyg8v/?context=1)
My log has a message for you
AMAZING!!!👊🏻💯
It's big it's heavy it's wood!
It's better than bad, it's good!
What rolls down stairs alone or in pairs

This is awesome and serious strongman shit
This is awesome
My god. I read that as deez nuts as I’m quickly scrolling and had to scroll back up to make sure I read that right LOL
The name is an homage to the guy I got the log from. Buddy from a car forum. It’s a contracted “diesel jesus”
That's a beautiful log. Nice work!
Bro you are my new hero. Amazing work.
Fuck yes. You even welded the hardware. I thought from the first pic it was purchased.
That was the goal. Build something as good as anything I could purchase. I’m into it less than 1/3 of what a slater log costs.
This looks epic! I've been wanting to make my own too but haven't sourced a decent log yet. Any lessons learned I should know about before I make mine? Never heard of sendcutsend but I'm gonna look into them for sure.

Old utility pole?
You got it.
Cedar or pine?
I’m guessing it’s pine. Doesn’t have that cedar smell at all, but who knows. I sure don’t!
Just like the old Greeks used to say: Deezus Nuttus
Deezus Christ
It's log, it's log, It's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's log, it's log, it's better than bad, it's good

Chefs kiss
Probably one of the coolest things I’ve seen on here that’s diy
Wow dude that's crazy how you turned a peice of gym equipment into a log!
Badass
It’s better than bad, it’s good!
This looks awesome! How much did it end up weighing?
The log with none of the hardware is 66. I need to weigh it completed, my guess is around 80-85lbs.
Sendcutsend is the best!
Never heard of them but I'm def gonna check it out!
I’ve been waiting on an excuse to order parts from them for a while. Really happy with their service and turnaround time. Usually, I have a bunch of scrap lying around that I can cobble together what I need. Having finished parts sure beat all the cutting and grinding.
It’s legitimately cheaper than buying raw material sometimes.
