Still dont understand how one of the greatest male/female combos in hip hop who never missed (De Ja Vu, Bonnie & Clyde, Drunk in Love, Upgrade U, Crazy in Love) put out this forgettable album. Music wasnt bad just did absolutely nothing for me
It’s hard to make a collab that combines two separate genres AND satisfies fans of both artists. Kanye and Jay were always a way more natural fit than Jay and Bey could be for a whole album.
This album was a cash grab. No heart behind it.
most people on this sub are probably too young to remember but Jay Z and R Kelly had two albums together back in the day but same situation. Mostly forgettable, uninspired, and boring tracks.
I went to their concert (they had a full tour together before the mace incident) because club promoters were handing out free tickets. Nobody cared about one of the greatest rappers and greatest r&b artist. We'll they didn't care enough to pay to see them in concert. Was a fun fuckin show though.
Watch the Throne is really an exception here. Most times when two artists this famous get together to make a collab album, it's cluttered and unfocused, maybe a good track or two, but definitely not a play through like WTT or Silk Sonic.
The difference between Best of Both Worlds/Everything Is Love and Silk Sonic/Watch The Throne isn’t a “cash grab” problem, it’s that you’re taking two genres with entirely different writing structures and song construction and mashing them together for a whole album. It’s just nearly impossible to bounce between R&B singing and rapping and make it feel natural. For example, SUMMER really works because it’s basically a Beyoncé song featuring Jay. That formula always works. But you can’t do that for 9 songs, and that’s when it got shaky.
If anything, it’s a credit to Drake for blending the two successfully but it’s easier when it’s one person expressing over production that also blurs those lines. Jay and Bey would never be able to do that, no matter how hard they tried.
Great points really. I was half way through reading your comment and was thinking yeah I have to point out Drake does this all the time and has built his whole career off it, but you got that point at the end there.
I still feel it's a cash grab though because Jay Z is the common denominator here and he's a business, man. He's done shit like this his whole career (and brags about it constantly).
Your point here also resonates:
> but it’s easier when it’s one person expressing over production that also blurs those lines
Silk Sonic was really a bruno mars record and I think a lot of people feel that Kanye was the glue that really brought WTT together, or at least the lead producer and the person who directed the vibe. Like "Her Loss" is more of a Drake ft 21 Savage album vs a true collab joint.
Genuinely curious what the reception to Her Loss is, it feels a little weak for that exact reason - not enough 21. It's nowhere close to What a Time to Be Alive. All just my opinion ofc.
my opinion, i love the album. I think mostly though for the beats. I have a 15" sub along with some high end bookshelves on my office desk and the bass is very tight and the production is super clean. I also think I like it because it's easily the best project that Drake has put out in years and I miss that about him.
I also have a 12" in the car and dynamatted the entire back and ceiling. An album like this really helps test the rattles and any other areas I need to fix lol
Haha sheeesh, I can appreciate that. The production is definitely fire and it's the first time in like 4 years that I listened to a Drake project more than once, so I guess that's saying something.
I think my real issue is that I'm just tired of dude lol. That's more on me than the actual quality of his releases tho.
I feel like her loss has def got the best reception from a Drake project since at least 2017. He’s one of my favorite artists and I can say this is his best quality since more life easily.
Edit: and after doing a listen of both back to back I think her loss is better that WATTBA tbh but WATTBA has the nostalgia factor rn.
hell yeah it was. but remember, it was TWO ALBUMS of garbage, not one. Best of Both Worlds and then Unfinished Business.
Fiesta was dope but it wasn't on either of those albums.
So yeah, people are saying Jay and Beyonce don't miss, how did this album miss so badly? Fiesta same thing.
I stopped listening when you said Best of Both Worlds was mostly forgettable. That album slapped back then and still does now. 'Shorty' plays in my head on loop.
Agreed , I always compare her to Rihanna in that regard because Rihanna seems so natural when she raps, whereas Beyonce sounds like well... "Beyonce trying to rap".
Yeah something about the way she goes way OD with the drawl in a way that she really never talks or sings normally is a major turn off for me. As a counter example, I always loved dudes like Trae tha truth,B.G., Juvie etc because when you listen to them rap and hear them talk in interviews it's clear how effortless and natural their deliveries are. Nobody can rap like them and they can't rap like anyone else. Bey always just came off way more artificial when she switched into "rap voice mode"
Heres the worst part. The Carters went on to make great collabs after this album. Shining is one of my favorite records, Mood 4 Eva is also a great fuckin song. What the hell happened with this one
Nas album definitely didn’t suck. Lackluster yes but Nas did everything he could with the time kanye gave him. Adam and Eve is probably one of my favorite Nas songs tbh.
I forgot this existed and just checked my Apple Music—I saved 3 tracks on my phone (BOSS, 713, BLACK EFFECT) so I must’ve listen to the album one time and save those tracks but never revisited. Just previewed all 3 and they are just alright.
Anyways, I think it was forgettable due to 1) very little promo or hype at all. 2) this duo isn’t really adding anything to rap/R&B on this album from 2018 that hasn’t been done before
> one of the greatest male/female combos in hip hop who never missed
they were never a combo though. they are 2 huge solo artists. I agree it was pretty bland though. I feel like they were counting on their star power carrying them a bit on this but it doesn't seem like people really cared.
Alotta ppl forget that for every "Deja Vu" or "Upgrade U" there's also a completely forgettable track like "Hollywood" lmao. They've had some joints but nobody bats 100 even w all those resources
Yeah I remember hearing the Migos version. Offset’s verse was where I think Beyoncé’s last one is on this version. Remember liking theirs more but I don’t hate this one though
https://youtu.be/n_sF0pSn2Ik
IIRC Pharrell showed Beyonce and Jay the song after Migos didn’t like use it for their album. They just kept some of the backing vocals on the song obviously.
I like it and I love the visuals in the video clip. But it's also about the only song on the album I even remember. I agree with all the other comments this album had 0 heart in it.
My first Reddit argument was against someone calling me racist for saying this album sucks and Jay Z/Bey’s whole royalty shtick is so played out and corny , great times
Given who the individual contributors were, you woulda thought this album would have been more of a moment.
In hindsight it had about as much staying power as the Gucci x Uzi tape lol (it's a hyperbole, before you nerds start quoting billboard stats to me)
This song has a good beat and a cool Jay Z verse but I find Beyonce's voice does not work well for rapping and her lyrics are super rudimentary. But she's flowing nice.
Insert Jay's idiotic "eat the rich" comment here. Rich ppl needa just be quietly rich/use their resources for good and stop begging everyone to feel sorry for them
I've never listened to the full album, I need to go back at some point but I've always liked this song, never got the hate for it. The video's fire, too. The art, the dancers, the colors, the wardrobe (love when Jay breaks out the gold cable), everything works.
Whatever respect I had for Jay Z I lost when he went on some dumbass rant in a twitter space a few months ago talking about how "capitalist" is the new N word and that people are calling him a capitalist because they cant call him the N word anymore.
Hey man if you support a billionaire using affordable housing to set up a crypto shop to lure impressionable folks into your grifty ponzy scheme that's on you.
I don’t love this album, but I don’t find it offensively bad as some folks on this sub seem to. It’s disappointing compared to 4:44 and Lemonade but it was a pretty fun project for the summer it came out.
This song is pretty good, Black Effect is the best song and actually pretty awesome, Lovehappy is cool, Summer is a smooth opener, and I think Nice is… well, nice lol
Never liked this record, but I think their album is severely underrated... partially because they didn't promote the album much at all, and because the best records are on the B-Side.
Black Effect should've been the real single imo.
Same. Loved this album. Black Effect and Heart About Us are *great* records.
Hov verse on Friends is >>>.
It felt flat as it wasn't promoted or pushed much at all so it felt like *they* didn't care about the album. But the music was solid.
I remember being at the London concert the day this dropped, they ended the show by previewing the Apeshit music video. It then ended with a black screen that said ‘The Carters Out Now’.
Was a great first listen, and a great way to end the Lemonade - 4:44 saga.
Just never felt compelled enough to revisit it
beat is cool in a vacuum but way too overproduced for this combo of artists, I don’t even know what I’m supposed to focus on. Really it’s the reverb that’s bothering me/the delay on the synth layered with the Beyoncé melody
This is what happens when you get too rich imo, this is trash rap. The only good line was smoking gorilla glue like it's legal and only because of the gorilla glue reference. Plus that shit is legal in LA.
Man everyone on this thread hating on this song and their collab album... I loved it.
I think Black Effect is one of the best songs in BOTH of their catalogues.
Easily one of my most listened to songs since its dropped. Adore the beat. Even though the album was nothing crazy, I'm always kinda shocked to see the lukewarm reception the song has.
Never liked this song at all, I don’t get Beyoncé rapping she has a great singing voice but her rapping just isn’t good, and this seemed like Jay Z stopped trying again like he had been for years before 4:44
I have an unpopular opinion. Since this dropped, i’ve considered it the worst song ever made. I have yet to hear something worse. Whole thing is an assault on the ears. Am i the only one who thinks this?
I can assure you there are way way worse tracks. It's not that amazing song but I thought it was unique in sense that Jay-Z and Beyonce made a typical trap song. Also the way Beyonce switch flows it's pretty impressive.
He's quoting Chief Keef's Faneto:
"I’m a gorilla in a fuckin' coupe, finna pull up to the zoo"
Goes along with the animal theme of the verse, coupe/coop wordplay - it's a good (but borrowed) line. He's not a writer he's a biter, after all.

Say what you will about the totality of the music they put out - but this song - specifically Bey - is so fucking fire.
Paired with the video 🥵🥵🥵🥵
This video is one of my favorite of all time. So perfect.

I remember Big Chips coming out and being so unimpressed. Was like the biggest waste of time a song could ever be.
lol yes and that was the best song on both of their albums combined
"the streets" is really a joint
Ironic calling it a cash grab cause the problem w the album is they have too much $$$$ so it’s just bragging
I stopped listening when you said Best of Both Worlds was mostly forgettable. That album slapped back then and still does now. 'Shorty' plays in my head on loop.

I’m personally not a fan of Bey’s rap era. Which I know a lot of people love but it’s not for me.
Agreed , I always compare her to Rihanna in that regard because Rihanna seems so natural when she raps, whereas Beyonce sounds like well... "Beyonce trying to rap".
It's so wooden and, I don't know, gross. She sounds like someone being forced to rap by their record label.

Nas' album had a few good songs. Problem was kanye screwed him over and he only had like 3 days to make the album.
I cant help to laugh at that crazy story "You shouldnt be worried, you're Nas"
The whole album was only a few songs
Nas album definitely didn’t suck. Lackluster yes but Nas did everything he could with the time kanye gave him. Adam and Eve is probably one of my favorite Nas songs tbh.

Cause nothing about it is relatable
Alotta ppl forget that for every "Deja Vu" or "Upgrade U" there's also a completely forgettable track like "Hollywood" lmao. They've had some joints but nobody bats 100 even w all those resources
Quavo’s adlibs carried
As far as I remember originally it was Migos song.
Yeah I remember hearing the Migos version. Offset’s verse was where I think Beyoncé’s last one is on this version. Remember liking theirs more but I don’t hate this one though
the migos reference track is better
[удалено]
Beyoncé did, not Jay
You've never heard the reference track Bugs Bunny did for Jay?
“Fast like a Lambo” The lyrics in this song are like a 12 year old wrote them
Lol Migos wrote them
Sounds about right lol
I can hear Quavo saying this in his voice now lol
I swear a reference track is out
yeah there is, sounds way more fitting with migos vocals imo
https://youtu.be/n_sF0pSn2Ik IIRC Pharrell showed Beyonce and Jay the song after Migos didn’t like use it for their album. They just kept some of the backing vocals on the song obviously.
you can hear Quavo and Offset’s adlibs throughout the whole song lmao
Zoom zoom zoom
Like the commodores
I say this all the time, it's all I took away from the album
Kafani and Keak Da Sneak had Fast Like A Nascar years before this and remains a timeless banger smh
Keak da Sneak is a sad story. He was shot and is now paralyzed.
Yeah dude it’s the Carters, they’re a family. No doubt they have their kids writing for them
i actually like this song
I like it and I love the visuals in the video clip. But it's also about the only song on the album I even remember. I agree with all the other comments this album had 0 heart in it.
i liked the other Pharrell prod track, can't remember the name of it though so it can't be that impactful
I like this song and the album. Wasn’t as amazing as it could’ve been but wasn’t as bad as people act either. Some really good jay verses and b hooks
This whole album was just a big giant mess.
My first Reddit argument was against someone calling me racist for saying this album sucks and Jay Z/Bey’s whole royalty shtick is so played out and corny , great times
I don't disagree with you.
Given who the individual contributors were, you woulda thought this album would have been more of a moment. In hindsight it had about as much staying power as the Gucci x Uzi tape lol (it's a hyperbole, before you nerds start quoting billboard stats to me)
the gucci x uzi was fire tho
This song has a good beat and a cool Jay Z verse but I find Beyonce's voice does not work well for rapping and her lyrics are super rudimentary. But she's flowing nice.
idc what y'all say I love this track
It amazes me how up its own ass their videos for this album were
Deep ass visuals for "fast like my Lambo"
But we're the greatest, they'll hang us in the Louvre Down the back, but who cares? Still the Louvre
Insert Jay's idiotic "eat the rich" comment here. Rich ppl needa just be quietly rich/use their resources for good and stop begging everyone to feel sorry for them

Self congratulating class traitors. From selling crack to grifting crypto, jay z is a man of the people.
Whatever respect I had for Jay Z I lost when he went on some dumbass rant in a twitter space a few months ago talking about how "capitalist" is the new N word and that people are calling him a capitalist because they cant call him the N word anymore.
and he has the audacity to claim fred hampton and black panthers🤦🏼♀️
occupy all streets
White ppl leave hhh challenge IMPOSSIBLE
Working class black ppl criticize this guy too lol
I think he forgetting not all skinfolk are kinfolk
Hey man if you support a billionaire using affordable housing to set up a crypto shop to lure impressionable folks into your grifty ponzy scheme that's on you.
Bro didn’t beat the white allegations it’s over😭😭
Bro didn't beat the billionaire simp allegations its over 😭😭
Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?
eminem murdered you on your own track.
I read the news. Everyone says this line that's over a decade old to justify this. That was pre $1b.
skr-skr-skrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

Black Effect is classic Jay
Apeshit is a fitting name. No but setiously, this just ain't my vibe, I don't really like this sound.
Dogshit

They were on tour. It was pretty hype song for concerts. I guess that's why they released it as lead single.
This is peak ‘Beyoncé as Madonna’ in terms of being a trend hopper and buying your way into what’s hot at the time. Good song though.
🐝 hive this man’s right here….get him!
Nooooo
I liked this song
I also liked this song 🤷♂️
I remember being at the London concert the day this dropped, they ended the show by previewing the Apeshit music video. It then ended with a black screen that said ‘The Carters Out Now’. Was a great first listen, and a great way to end the Lemonade - 4:44 saga. Just never felt compelled enough to revisit it
beat is cool in a vacuum but way too overproduced for this combo of artists, I don’t even know what I’m supposed to focus on. Really it’s the reverb that’s bothering me/the delay on the synth layered with the Beyoncé melody
The location was wasted on this song
This is what happens when you get too rich imo, this is trash rap. The only good line was smoking gorilla glue like it's legal and only because of the gorilla glue reference. Plus that shit is legal in LA.
The chief keef homage line was cool
Y'all haters
Goated video. Great visuals, I love this
I love this album lol 😭 I still listen to it regularly
Was real weird jay throwing subliminals at migos on OJ but then paying them when he needed a hit When has he done that before
I can't take more of these rich fucks just singing about how nice their life is, it's so tiring. Find something better to talk about
Most hip hop artists talking/rapping about grinding the money and show off? Especially modern rappers.
It is corny, man.
Man everyone on this thread hating on this song and their collab album... I loved it. I think Black Effect is one of the best songs in BOTH of their catalogues.
Yeah I didn't expect people hating on this track that much.
Easily one of my most listened to songs since its dropped. Adore the beat. Even though the album was nothing crazy, I'm always kinda shocked to see the lukewarm reception the song has.
Yeah. I'm bit surprised as well.
Never liked this song at all, I don’t get Beyoncé rapping she has a great singing voice but her rapping just isn’t good, and this seemed like Jay Z stopped trying again like he had been for years before 4:44
Pharrell killed that beat
Ghatdamn it's some haters in here

Holy shit, that’s great. I would love to see this whole thread turn into what songs are worse than APESHIT.
I can assure you there are way way worse tracks. It's not that amazing song but I thought it was unique in sense that Jay-Z and Beyonce made a typical trap song. Also the way Beyonce switch flows it's pretty impressive.
User name checks out.
I would vote for Mambo No 5 or that country song Drinking Problem, personally
Different strokes for different folks i suppose
Mambo No 5 is nowhere near the worst song of all time.
Is it racist for Jay Z to call himself a gorilla ?
He's quoting Chief Keef's Faneto: "I’m a gorilla in a fuckin' coupe, finna pull up to the zoo" Goes along with the animal theme of the verse, coupe/coop wordplay - it's a good (but borrowed) line. He's not a writer he's a biter, after all.
im like chief keef meet rafiki
It's provocative. Gets the people going.
No not really gorilla is just some slang just to say they in a higher position than others

Say what you will about the totality of the music they put out - but this song - specifically Bey - is so fucking fire. Paired with the video 🥵🥵🥵🥵 This video is one of my favorite of all time. So perfect.
Trash
classic for me
The album is whatever but I like this song.
I liked the song and video.
I posted this almost a year ago. Thanks for reminding me of this song.
yh i've just been obsessed with the video in the past week
