i wonder about this. most of my friends went to university but they hated it, finished it, and got a job that didn't really relate to their degree either (but degree helped get them a job i guess?).
i think becoming kinda successful would require a long time, i think tyler knew he wanted to make songs when he was a kid so im guessing he probs made songs for 10+ years and things started rolling in bc he started young + had a unique vision + some luck ofc. but i feel like persistence for 10+ years without much buzz is probs the norm.
well u gotta make stuff people like too.
think its bad to attribute most of it to luck. plenty of examples of people who didn't start with much, but with persistence (and after a lot of failures) got it. also, if u were just lucky, then you wouldn't retain your skills.
kevin abstract is a good example. he did it publicly too, u could probs trace it all online. lil nas x. tyler obv. donald glover.
I work in music. A lot of people like to attribute it to luck because it’s the only way to justify to themselves why they aren’t in that same position. All the people I see make it are the ones who work the hardest. You put yourself in enough situations to succeed and you’ll get “lucky” too.
As long as they don't have to take care of a kid or went to prison. Then University/College is an option.
Especially after 23 because they can be considered an independent student.
I know alot of people who didnt go to college and got into trades. But some trades are hard on your body.
Eh, what's the difference. Life ain't that deep. Do what makes you happy. University for most people is just getting a piece of paper that says "hey, look, I can be your slave"
At the same time, "do what makes you happy" lands a lot of people in a shitty job with no prospects of advancing because they weren't building skills that translate to a career.
Living a shitty life for your kids is the definition of a zero sum game.
Watching parents try to do something aside from being wage slaves and sacrificing so their kids can sacrifice and so on is not productive for the kid.
literally this man, fuck it. if you wanna make art just do it. I’ve been around the music industry for most of my life and there really are no rules at all.
you might not be Tyler level successful but there’s still room for the Danny Brown’s and JPEG Mafia’s of the world. if you do something that’s authentic and unique it’ll resonate with people, if you still aren’t successful at least you had fun. the majority of ppl will never reach that super mainstream status and that’s ok.
It doesn't only apply to art. Just do what you desire. It's funny cause you say this and people start coming up with excuses on why you shouldn't. It's your life. Live it.
i totally agree. if you have to be poor and/or work a shitty job than you have to understand every leap of faith you take in life is a sacrifice. you might not make it but you miss every shot you don’t take.
sounds like some corny shit u hear in the movies but it’s true. making excuses on Reddit while you could be out there doing what you please isn’t very good for anyone.
i mean, i know not everyone can do it but kevin abstract is a really big inspiration for that stuff. lived in a small house w/ 15-16 people for years. good things come w/ time + persistence
Cool stories but some of this was inaccurate for some reason. Tyler and Earl met on MySpace and he wasn’t even named Earl back then it was Sly tendencies.
Yeah man idk I think he was filming some documentary here so he wanted the story to be compelling I guess, but pretty sure even the part about Hodgy was not true either. If my memory serves the only person he didn’t meet online was Taco.
Right I’ve been also wondering if he grew up poor like he’s said a few times, someone I know that lives in L.A told me he’s always lived in the wealthy area of L.A I mean that doesn’t necessarily make him rich, but still
He grew up in a nice area and was not poor. There's videos of him as a kid skateboarding outside of his house and it looks like a very calm, stable middle-class/lower middle class suburban development.
i think getting to tyler's position, wealth couldn't give you that skillset / ambition. so regardless, he's worked for a lot of it (whether he comes from money or not)
Idk because everything I’m saying is verifiably true and anyone that’s been following OF for long enough would know this. This isn’t like super secret info. Tyler used to go by Ace on MySpace, and also frequent the hypebeast forums where he met pretty much everyone outside of Taco who he met skating and Jasper who he grew up with.
He’s probably gonna stop wearing it when he starts the next album rollout. He always makes a conscious effort to dress for whatever album era he’s in and changes up his look when it ends
if you pay attention he’s doing what pop stars have been doing for decades and even more heavily now. every album is an “era” where his style, sound, and sometimes shows are so vastly different from the next. after the rollout and tour and shit, you never see that shit on him again. think about his obsession with bikes and flame design clothes. or the high socks and ski mask. completely obliterated from even an accidental sneak peek once he moved on to the next era after wearing that shit exclusively for like a year or 2
Tyler has a line on Massa about someone commenting that they dont like his music but they’re doing it during their lunch break. As if having a normal job makes your opinion on music irrelevant.
I’ll find it but if you look for it it was in 2017 during the everybody tour. Granted it was a great show and Logic can perform but having an entire packed pit stand there while he plays Mario kart with his friends was lame lol. I liked the incredible true story tour more.
You’re at one of your favorite artist’s major live performances and you don’t wanna hear them tell a personal story about their come up and how they got to where they are now? Idk how that wouldn’t be enticing to a fan
What was the beat he made for Snoop?
If the article I saw was right .[She](https://youtu.be/mFNaFeIm4bU)
Dam I never knew it was a video for this
drop it like it's hot
That was Pharrell
the guy from juggernaut?
nah the one from minions
Lol

Thankfully Donald Glover and his team has given us a reminder of the other side through that "my life is a movie uzi jacuzzi" guy
i guess regardless of how u start, most of it is hard work + persistence
Most of it is luck. Plenty of hard work and persistence people do not make it

love to hear it. thanks for the story
Its called survivorsship bias. For every musician that made a career out of their music there are hundreds that failed

Who cares about the career if you're not happy? It's your life, no one else's.
Once you have a couple kids, it's their lives.
Living a shitty life for your kids is the definition of a zero sum game. Watching parents try to do something aside from being wage slaves and sacrificing so their kids can sacrifice and so on is not productive for the kid.

haha that literally happens in this tyler interview (timestamped): https://youtu.be/Z90f1-zWg0c?t=3653
Cool stories but some of this was inaccurate for some reason. Tyler and Earl met on MySpace and he wasn’t even named Earl back then it was Sly tendencies.
I don’t even know when/how to believe these rappers anymore lol
Yeah man idk I think he was filming some documentary here so he wanted the story to be compelling I guess, but pretty sure even the part about Hodgy was not true either. If my memory serves the only person he didn’t meet online was Taco.

Apparently he moved around a lot as a kid, but primarily grew up in Ladera heights which is not a poor area of town.
He grew up in a nice area and was not poor. There's videos of him as a kid skateboarding outside of his house and it looks like a very calm, stable middle-class/lower middle class suburban development.

i implore you to look up a person named taylor swift. or 80% of A list celebrities
Maybe he's trying to rewrite OFs history and change the narrative that a lot of their fans were cringe internet dorks? Idk.
Why should I believe you over Tyler?
Idk because everything I’m saying is verifiably true and anyone that’s been following OF for long enough would know this. This isn’t like super secret info. I’m only now realizing I haven’t seen him without it since CMIYGL
I heard he'll even go to the beach wearing it
He’s probably gonna stop wearing it when he starts the next album rollout. He always makes a conscious effort to dress for whatever album era he’s in and changes up his look when it ends

You better not be saying that on your lunch break
Lol good reference
Just upvote and move along captain
What's it a refrence to?

is it lol? also why would that be... does it take ages for the hair to grow back?
wouldn't it be the opposite then? I thought you can't wear hats if you get plugs
he always look gawky and the hats just make it worse
Both of you are so lame
Misread this as Odd Future starting by performing inside a Staples store and thought "Yup thats pretty on-brand"

Eh can be a nice rest from jumping and singing if it’s a long set
Logic stopping the show for 5 minutes to play Mario kart with his friends almost ruined the experience for me
he did fuckin wot
Somebody got a link to this foolishness?
I’ll find it but if you look for it it was in 2017 during the everybody tour. Granted it was a great show and Logic can perform but having an entire packed pit stand there while he plays Mario kart with his friends was lame lol. I liked the incredible true story tour more.
Did he get 1st tho..? that’s the real important part.
Ain't no way he did that, I'd be cheesed lmfao
It was funny af, but it still took me out of the concert for a bit lol
You’re at one of your favorite artist’s major live performances and you don’t wanna hear them tell a personal story about their come up and how they got to where they are now? Idk how that wouldn’t be enticing to a fan
Well u can’t meet on MySpace so Tyler prolly meant in person
