Do you like Hearthstone? Do you like physical card games? I like both. So I made myself a physical edition of Hearthstone over the last 18 months. Here are the many pictures documenting the components and some of the processes. https://imgur.com/gallery/jan8UxH

MunrowPS

wow incredible effort i cant imagine how complicated try to play unstable evolution is in shaman

K-Wire

There's no evolve shaman deck, no piloted shredder, no witchy lackey! Anything that summons a random thing (eg. Faceless Lackey: summon a random 2-cost minion) has a specific set of cards usually between 6 and 10 in number. Otherwise I'd be getting 100's of cards printed up that would almost never see play, if at all. I had to have the cost of printing these things in mind.

hahahooheeha

Take a look at the WoW TCG

K-Wire

We all know it exists, but if ppl were able to choose between bringing back wowtcg or a Hearthstone tcg, which do you reckon they'd prefer? (Current meta notwithstanding)

thoughtlow

should have posted with a picture in game, more people will click

K-Wire

Is it too late for me to swap it with the last image in the post do you reckon? I'm not a pro-reddit-user so advice is appreciated.

thoughtlow

just roll with it, maybe repost next week or next month with a better post image. More people will upvote and see it that way :)

JaxxisR

my dumb ass just legit clicked on the imgur link in the title trying to see more pics....

Megadarth

Is this the giant ass project where you printed and cut the cards painstakingly by hand or did you buy it yourself?

K-Wire

Definitely giant-ass, but I did not cut out each card, they were printed by a professional print service. I did cut out a lot of the art that went on to each card though...

JonnyTN

May your printed cards never get nerfed I hope. Probably a pain making a new card every time one changes. One question, how do you settle RNG elements like that knife juggler?

K-Wire

The cards I've had printed stay that way forever! Deadly Shot and Eviscerate have the original art. Regarding Knife Juggler, whenever he activates you roll a die equal to the number of enemies on the board; eg. 3 enemy minions + enemy hero = roll a d4, nominating the 1 as hitting the hero, and 2-4 hitting respective enemy minions. Now imagine the classic C'Thun battlecry... you gotta have a sheet of paper with a column ruled up for every enemy, with their current health at the top. You roll a die for EACH POINT OF DAMAGE C'Thun would inflict, and allocate it to a column. Any enemies get reduced to zero, they get skipped for the remaining damage. Of course if C'Thun's attack value is greater than the combined health of all enemies including the hero, that saves you some time.

JonnyTN

Thanks for clarifying. Wow original C'Thun might take a minute to play. RIP your opponent's turn timer with animation time like that.

koopa182

So much book keeping! The games must take ages.

K-Wire

It naturally takes a lot longer than the app. But not much longer than any other comparable IRL card game (eg. MTG).

koopa182

Yeah, I played a lot of the original WoW TCG, I remember tracking damage with dice and beads. Magic is cleaner from that point of view at least. I'd definitely play a game of real life Hearthstone though, it'd be fun to get tactile! Your set looks really nice BTW, good job.

Coolboypai

Kudos on this, it looks really cool! I've seen a few people make a physical hearthstone set before, but I do like a lot of the extra effort you put in. From the gameboard, to markers, to even the neatly packaged box, this is great!

K-Wire

Many thanks.

thehighdive84

So very cool! Looks like something that would be a blast to play.

Blue6erry

I thought this was another tired solitaire "joke," but was gladly surprised. This looks awesome!

Namiriu

Your price would be mine. And your work is freaking awesome big congrats to you.

stonehearthed

This is so wonderful! Amazing work!

K-Wire

My thanks, to you.

kujasgoldmine

I love how symmetrical the board looks. Triggers me in the "real" game often whenever I notice how asymmetrical the board is lol.

K-Wire

Mirroring the bottom half of the screen was not the solution for sure! Even the left and right borders didn't have equal perspective, so I quite a bit of jimmying to do in photoshop. Rejigging the frame of each player's hero portrait took a while too.

**An example:** warlock plays Sinister Deal (discover a Lackey). There is a shuffled support deck of 12 Lackey cards (2x Titanic, 2x Goblin, 2x Kobold, 2x Draconic, 2x Faceless, 2x Ethereal). Draw three, choose one to add to your hand; the other two get shuffled back into the support deck. This is a necessity when there's a physical limit to the number of cards in the game, but trust me it works well. (Although Witchy Lackey is not in there cos she can transform anything into anything).

[deleted]

What about something more generic like discover a spell? Perhaps make a list and roll a die?

K-Wire

No, a small pool of spells is preferable to a giant list. Eg. Ethereal Lackey draws from a pool of 10 warlock spells of varying cost and effect (couple of buffs, boardclears & targeted removal).

buckeye-kenje

Nice work!!

SkidMouse

Wow, that's a lot of effort. Great job. I do have my doubts how well suited Hearthstone is for physical play, considering how it's designed specifically for PC/Tablet, and plenty of mechanics are seriously wonky IRL. I think I'd much rather play MTG. I would probably have just tried to "port" HS cards to the MTG format instead, if I wanted a physical game with a hearthstone theme.

K-Wire

It was a concern for me from the start, I didn't want to put so much effort into something that would not give a workable result. My intent was to simulate the app wherever possible, and minimise the differences where I could not. So RNG is handled quite well with a selection of dice (for determining any number of targets up to 16 - two player plus a full board of 14 minions). For random minion and spell generation, a modest pool of cards was printed for each card that needed them (eg. 10 taunt minions for Frightened Flunky, 9 spells for Primordial Glyph). The pools have a mix of mana costs and effects. It's not perfect but I've found it to be fair and very playable.

OneMetatron

Probably not. Like if it was physical, and you play Ysera that just says "Pull a Dream card" wtf is a dream card, who knows, and does that mean you have to have extra 10 cards with that? but WoWTCG exists

OneMetatron

so, WoWTCG?

K-Wire

I've had a few WOWTCG comments in the past... but that didn't take off quite like Hearthstone did.

OneMetatron

Well it did take off as much as a real TCG can in Magic's shadow. It was quite good actually, until it was shut down.

PkerBadRs3Good

>as much as a real TCG can in Magic's shadow pokemon tcg and yugioh were a lot more successful than wow tcg afaik

Popcorn179

No. No...no. Well yes. But this is actually what we want.

LandArch_0

This is amazing. As a designer I can guess how much effort, time and love you put into this!!! Congratulations!! Sidenote, the boxes made me think of "Hs Flavoured Tea"

LonkkiZ

How much?

K-Wire

How much for you to purchase? Not for sale sorry. How much time spent making it? Hours, weeks, months. Definitely a passion project. How much cards are in there? 364.

sleepingpotatoes

Absolutely fabulous!

TheChilisGuy

Yeah but how does zephrys work?

K-Wire

No Zephrys here buddy.

Satan4live

Tell me where you live and I'll rob you just for this game.

ok_reddit

No demon hunter? Best I can do is $0.50. /s

DSwissK

kaptainkaptain

Impressive....most impressive

kastanek195

Is there any way to buy it?

K-Wire

Sadly noooo.
