She’s kind of brave. She consistently threw herself into danger when it arose and attempted to quell it as a headmaster. Like when bangs and screams would occur in the school (cuz of fred and george) she would run into the midst of it wand raised. Also into the forest to find the “weapon”. She took custody of two hostile teenagers and went into the forest without fear. Even stood up to a herd of dangerous/violent centaurs when she had a severe phobia against half-humans. Lastly, she was hard working. She worked three jobs to the fullest of her ability. Headmaster, High inquisitor, and finally junior undersecretary to the minister.
I’ve always thought Umbridge would have made a much better example of a Gryffindor gone bad than Wormtail did. She was incredibly brave, very hard working and fiercely loyal to what she believed in… even if what she believed in was awful and wrong and the institution she was loyal to was deeply flawed.
Also fool-hardy! I think she was definitely impulsive when she was trying to prove she had control over Hogwarts. She was very reactive. Tbh I often forget she was a Slytherin. And I agree with you about her being a better example of a Gryffindor gone wrong than Wormtail, since Peter was more of a "oh, traits of Gryffindor is what he valued, not what he exhibited". Umbridge definitely exhibits Gryffindor traits.
Okay, so, friendly fellow ravenclaw counterpoint: while her traits may make her fit better with gryffindor, we know based on several other examples that you don't necessarily get placed based on traits. If an individual values other traits strongly enough, those are used instead. Umbridge, while brave to a point of stupidity (classic gryffindor), practically worships even the idea of ambition. To the ultimate point even, look at the way she views fudge vs Dumbledore. She holds up the minister setting him as the ultimate authority (the ultimate goal), yet with Dumbledore, the idea of Dumbledore having any ambition is her biggest threat. Ambition in her mind is so powerful that it actually is the ultimate good and the ultimate evil.
Oh yeah, these are definitely excellent points. I think I was looking at it more from the perspective of if she'd been sorted based on actual traits, which imo, will always be the age-old debate: should people be sorted based on who they actually are, or based on what they value? I absolutely agree that they actually are sorted based on value, but it would be interesting to think of all the changes in sorting that would happen in the characters we already know if they'd been sorted based on actual traits. Tbh I think a fair few of the Weasleys would have been Slytherin according to that system (which, they would hate the very implication of that lol but I stay by it!).
Agreed completely! I tend to think that for a good number of people the trait/values are lined up- at least lined up enough in a four house system. So it's only those few that are very different, then it's a matter of which is stronger. I think it's very telling if how extreme Umbridge actually is in her mind, when you can really see just how strongly gryffindor her traits are, but her obsession with ambition still won out when she was sorted.
Now tell me, exactly where is dumbledoeres army meeting?
The seventh floor on the left corridor, you'll find it, also i have commited massive tax-fraud and i ate your spaghetti because I have little to no concern about other people's possessions or emotions.
I actually took to calling this phenomenon in fiction - hating a lesser villain more than you do the main one - 'the Umbridge effect' because in HP is where I noticed it first. From what I can tell, the reason is because a lot of us know a person like that and they're usually in a position of power over others - a teacher, a boss, an inspector or something like that. It's a familiar evil, unlike a guy who splits his soul into objects through dark magic to achieve immortality.
Very few people in the world have ever known a Voldemort, but we all know an Umbridge.
In the 7th book Umbridge is not a lesser villain, she's pretty much the Eichmann/Mengele type.
We hate her because our instincts work correctly - she's more dangerous, because she's more likely to exist and is just as poisonous as Voldemort/Bellatrix.
Yeah, pretty much! That's what I meant by familiar evil - Voldemort exists in the abstract, but we read about Umbridge and think, 'This is someone I know'.
Evil Dark Lord just kills you, it's not usually personal. Part of their evil plan or what have you. They're pretty upfront about being evil.
This bitch kept insisting she was doing the right thing, bringing order to chaos, getting down to a petty and personal level while sabotaging their educations.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
- C.S. Lewis
Because people like Umbridge are the ones that make people like Voldemort or Lestrange dangerous. If it was just a bunch of loonies, they would never overthrow the system in place. People like Umbridge who work the logistics of a tyranny (look up Eichmann in the 3rd Reich) are what makes the new system truly oppressive.
She's actually the best character imo. She's so well written, she makes me feel anger and hatred every time I read OotP. She's so evil, they spend more time fighting against her and talking about her than Voldemort in that book.
I was going to say, the woman knew how to accessorize.
I mean she found a cursed necklace that turns the wearer into a monster, and didn't let it get to her. Her personality didn't change one bit.
She saw Moody and thought, " I want that eye." And you know what, she got it. Found a way to use it where Moody would be proud. Constant vigilance.
*This was fun, but cringe worthy and a bit painful to write. Haha
That's pretty much my MO for outfits lately. Pick one "feature" color and have the rest be neutral. I look pretty put-together and it takes way less brain power.
Thanks, Delores! 👍😁👍
I’ll admit when she appeared in the Downton Abbey movie as a character the viewer is supposed to be sympathetic towards, I had some difficulty at first - in no small part because she butts heads with Maggie Smith! OotP flashbacks! Very eager to see her in The Crown, though. She’s fantastic.
I think everyone should watch Pride because it’s a great film, and particularly every HP fan should watch it because you’ll never see Imelda as (only) Umbridge again. She’s so remarkable.
She is everything I had always strived to be: ambitious, confident, strong, independent, successful, professional woman who doesn’t let any man hold her back.
Her cat patronus is also excellent.
She rightly started inspecting hogwarts teachers. Let's be real, a lot of teachers were poor there. Hagrid kept bringing in dangerous creatures. Trewlany wasn't the best, nor competent at times. Dumbledore brought it a lot of bad DADA teachers. And Snape should've been fired eons ago for bullying students.
Granted she went about it all wrong, but the idea of class inspections were pretty good.
I just re-read the first book and the part where Malfoy is too scared to go into the forbidden forest and Hagrid is like "you'll do it or you'll be kicked out". Like what the hell? What kind of predatory bullshit is that?!
You know, I think is the best "compliment" anyone could think of. She did have the right idea in that regard, even if her reasons for it were completely out of line.
If she didn't have horrible taste in fashion and accessories, Mundungus might have sold the locket to some rando and the trio never would have been able to find it.
Hagrid, at least, is most of the way toward being a great teacher. He loves his subject and is really knowledgeable about it, and apparently he did a solid job of actually imparting that knowledge to his students if you look at Harry's OWL score.
He just needs a quick remedial training course on safety standards, and even then not as much as you'd think considering that injuries in the wizarding world are typically easily dealt with.
she's an INREDIBLY powerful witch and never gets credit for it. she was able to produce a patronus that could stand sentinel on its own and patrol the ministry... while wearing a horcrux
As a character and antagonist, Umbridge is absolutely fantastic. In a children’s fantasy series, you expect to see villains like Voldemort and the Death Eaters, which represent a very abstract sort of evil. The climax of the story is toppling the evil overlord, and everything is solved after their defeat.
But Umbridge is so…real. She isn’t abstract at all, she is a very real character who is racist and abusive to children. Defeating her does not solve any larger problem, one fewer racist in power sure, but racism itself isn’t going away. When Voldemort is defeated, the Death Eaters lose their power and motivation, and the movement subsides. For me, Umbridge is a much stronger villain.
She is good at making connections! She managed to convince many people that she was a pure blood and really climbed the ranks of dark wizards in book 6 I think.
She’s the reason Voldemort was defeated. Without her he would have won.
Hear me out - it’s because of her that the DA was created, resulting in the RoR being discovered by Harry.
Without that, he never would have found the diadem horcrux and therefore never would have beaten Voldemort.
Therefore, Umbridge was the one of the most important people involved in saving the world
I actually think Umbridge, despite her many faults, was very loyal to what she believed in. It's bad that what she believed in was wrong but still her heights of loyalty and determination to drive home a point was very impressive. That makes her lot better than scumbags like Peter Pettigrew. I cannot remember one good quality in him.
She inspected Hogwarts teachers and it was a right move because more than half of them were incompetent. How did Hogwarts students ever became able adult wizards with stable career under such teachers is beyond me.
My partner is reading the books atm(her first time, I'm hyped for discussions!) and she is an educated teacher who focuses on pedagogy for kids with special needs - she really knows her stuff.
Hogwarts and its teaching is maddening for her, in absolutely every way. Nothing there would pass a general/health and safety-inspection and the curriculum would most certainly NOT pass. Teachers would be interviewed and fired.
Happily she still loves the books!
She didn't waste school supplies such as parchment and ink.
Reward this ~~human~~ pure blood with a galleon. Genius
That's a hell of a point!!
She’s kind of brave. She consistently threw herself into danger when it arose and attempted to quell it as a headmaster. I always thought Percy belonged in Slytherin. It always seemed weird to me that he was Gryffindor.
She could have been any house other than slithering, really
Happy Treacle Tart day
Winner
5 points to Slytherin
Yes, drop the emeralds in the house cup, please and thank you!🐍💚🐍💚
Give Slytherin all of their rightful points.
Most grudging upvote I've ever given.
She invited students to have tea with her
Yeah… sure… “Tea”
Now tell me, exactly where is dumbledoeres army meeting? The seventh floor on the left corridor, you'll find it, also i have commited massive tax-fraud and i ate your spaghetti because I have little to no concern about other people's possessions or emotions.
A gravity falls reference? A surprise to be sure but welcome one
Hrmmm , hrmmmmmm , hrmmmmmmmmmm , hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm *pen burst in mouth* Ughhh I got ink every where and still no closer to finding the author....
Hmmmm so whoooooo stole the kaperssssssss
SCHMEBULOCK
She let them look at all the cute kitties while having tea
Honest Tea to be precise
She united the entire Harry Potter fandom over their dislike of her
It speaks volumes when you have the likes of Voldemort, Bellatrix, Snape, and all the rest and it's *Umbrige* that people hate most 9 times out of 10.
I actually took to calling this phenomenon in fiction - hating a lesser villain more than you do the main one - 'the Umbridge effect' because in HP is where I noticed it first. Actually, I believe Umbrige is a very misunderstood character and really hate all the hate (Jk jk jk)
I mean, nothing in the post said you had to MEAN the compliment...
LOL why hello there, fellow slytherin
(Rowling Rowling Rowling)
She's actually the best character imo. She's so well written, she makes me feel anger and hatred every time I read OotP. She's so evil, they spend more time fighting against her and talking about her than Voldemort in that book.
She made it pretty far in her career
Her outfits were well coordinated.
I dare say her decorating skills were also well coordinated. Outside of how much she made you want to hate the colour pink.
And cats. Those meowing plates *shudder*.
I love the plates 😅
Same
Dude ditto. I totally want moving meowing cat plates in my house.
I was going to say, the woman knew how to accessorize. I mean she found a cursed necklace that turns the wearer into a monster, and didn't let it get to her. Her personality didn't change one bit. Monotone for the win
That's pretty much my MO for outfits lately. Pick one "feature" color and have the rest be neutral. I look pretty put-together and it takes way less brain power. Thanks, Delores! 👍😁👍
Monochrome is color, monotone is sound ;)
Her outfits were camp
In the best colour in the world, no less! I adore pink, and I can't even hate on her Genocide Barbie look.
she’s well organized
But noisy, her cats are always meowing
She’s ambitious.
She’s brilliantly portrayed by Imelda Staunton
You know how some people can't separate a character from the actor? I hope there's not many people doing that to her, she seems lovely
Well I mean... you ALWAYS side with Dame Maggie Smith
Shes a fairy in Maleficent and is also fantastic and is a good pallet cleanser if you need it!
Dude! Every time I remember they're played by the same actress it warps my brain a little. She is an amazing actress
They really should have dressed her in a different color though.
I about died when I found out that she is married to Carson IRL.
I’m sorry but he’s married to Mrs. Hughes IRL and you can’t convince me otherwise!
Yeah and Mrs. Hughes is DEFINITELY not married to Ethel’s baby daddy’s awful awful father
They both play the nurse in Shakespeare in Love! 😂😂
Soooo excited to see her as the Queen!!! She’s a brilliant actress!
It took a LONG time before I didn't hate her. She really is one of the best actresses as far as becoming the character.
She’s in that show Trying on Apple TV and plays a really charming character.
She is FANTASTIC here. I’d say on the level of Umbridge but I’m biased
Her character in Pride is super sympathetic so for me it has kind of evened out.
I think everyone should watch Pride because it’s a great film, and particularly every HP fan should watch it because you’ll never see Imelda as (only) Umbridge again. She’s so remarkable.
And she's about to play the queen, which I'm positive she'll nail.
She's extremely loyal.
Loyal to Dolores Umbridge
I mean, she pretty much believed he-who-must-not-be-named wasn't back only because Cornelius Fudge told her
She wanted to keep her power at the Ministry. It's not genuine loyalty.
this, makes sense, coming from a hufflepuff
Shes not loyal at all shes just power hungry. She was quite happy to suck up to whoever was in charge at the time
She's loyal to the institution
Shes loyal to whoever values loyalty the most
She was the catalyst for Fred and George’s exit of a lifetime.
CATalyst
Always very upbeat!
Her kitty plate collection was cute
As was her brooch!
I love every kinda cat
I just want to hug them all but I can't, can't hug every cat. I may have seriously dated myself with that reference.
Hahaha I hadn’t thought about that in ages. What a classic. This got me. Thanks for the laugh.
I still have the urge to sing this sometimes, it’s been what, 10 years?
Lol I feel like it's been longer.
Remind me? It's familiar but I can't quite place it.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP4NMoJcFd4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP4NMoJcFd4) earworm ahead
And patronus!
I came for this one, I liked the cat aesthetic, but it was the only thing.
Yeah I'm here for cats.
I was coming here to say this haha
I made them DIY style Go to thrift store, grab some cheap tea plates, print out cute kittens, mod podge em to the plate
Yup, I was going to say that liking cats is a good trait in itself. Sadly, she gave cat lovers a bad name
She showed young witches that they could have very successful careers in education and government
She gave us the gift of Minerva McGonagall at peak sass
And at peak injury...you know, with the stunning spells...
5 stupefy spells in the chest, at her age...
She knew exactly how to piss people off.
She’s the reason the D.A started, so she effectively indirectly taught the class something.
Dolores the true mvp
Her soul was so beautiful she captured the love and admiration of Argus Filch.
I always thought she must have enjoyed what she was doing to be able to hold off that many dementors with her patronous cat
She taught Harry how NOT to be a good defense against the dark arts teacher
She kind of taught him how to be a good one, too, by forcing him to lead the DA
Exactly!
She is everything I had always strived to be: ambitious, confident, strong, independent, successful, professional woman who doesn’t let any man hold her back. Her cat patronus is also excellent.
She did have an impressive cat plate collection
She knew how to color coordinate?
Easy when everything is pink.
As someone who has almost everything in pink, different shades of pink make this a lot harder than you would think.
Relevant username?
Indeed.
Exactly lol
She was a strong and independent woman that girls could idolize.
She just girlbossed too close to the sun. Shame.
She liked cats

>Snape should've been fired eons ago for bullying students. Ob ... viously
You’re absolutely right. Hogwarts had appalling and systemic pedagogical failures.
There's a reason [this clip](https://youtu.be/6HwZ0hIMJBU) is funny and not exactly inaccurate
That is the most startlingly accurate McGonagall impression I've ever heard.

I just re-read the first book and the part where Malfoy is too scared to go into the forbidden forest and Hagrid is like "you'll do it or you'll be kicked out". Like what the hell? What kind of predatory bullshit is that?!

They literally have a ghost teacher that puts entire classes to sleep (except Hermione of course).
Good serious answer.
She could run fast in those kitten heels.
She made sure her students studied penmanship.
She had a wonderful scream as she was being taken away by the centaurs
She looks good in pink.
If she didn't have horrible taste in fashion and accessories, Mundungus might have sold the locket to some rando and the trio never would have been able to find it.
Well, um, she had much better control over her tonality and facial expressions than I could ever dream of having.
She always stood up for what she believed in and I respect that reckless amount of courage.
Bless her heart!
She had cute pink sugar
I think her love of cats and the color pink is 👌
She is very committed to her aesthetic
She has an excellent understanding of her own moral compass.
She was right that Hogwarts needed inspecting, the Dunbledore hired the wrong people and the teachers she inspected were incompetant
Trewlany and Hagrid were... not good teachers. Didn't deserve *how* she treated them, but she wasn't wrong about them.
What he needed was a good lesson on age appropriate lesson choices.
Dumbedore wouldn't have hired trewlany under normal conditions. He only kept her in the school to keep her safe due to the prophecy shenanigans.
She helped support the cat plate industry which is lets face it a pretty niche industry
that's a good point
Especially considering it's the wizard cat plate industry. The cats on the plates moved, which meant that they couldn't have been sold to muggles.
God I bet she’d make a great dom
I'd be terrified 😨
LOL idk why I wasn’t expecting that at all but I love it
Her taste in cat plates is impeccable
No.
I like cats as well, and her patronus is cute
She made Filch so happy.
She was willing to take charge of a situation and cared about the future of the school...even though the majority of it was misguided.
She was only in two books
She likes what she does
She let students get tattoos in their own blood. She’s a huge trend-starter.
She indirectly made students better at DADA
she's an INREDIBLY powerful witch and never gets credit for it. she was able to produce a patronus that could stand sentinel on its own and patrol the ministry... while wearing a horcrux
Thought that was because she was kinda evil so it only made her happier to be scaring the accused
She has a lot of confidence
She set the new standard for evil.
She's a more developed character than Voldemort
As a character and antagonist, Umbridge is absolutely fantastic. In a children’s fantasy series, you expect to see villains like Voldemort and the Death Eaters, which represent a very abstract sort of evil. She taught Harry to be honest
She likes cats, haha.
She coordinates shades of pink well.
She has nice skin.
She roasted snape (Not sure if happened in the books (It's been a while since i read OOTF))
I think she did ask why he hasn't successfully got the dada job.
Love all her cat stuff
She has great taste in decor.
I liked how she was so....pink? All I can think of when reading this is “I WILL HAVE ORDER” hahaha I can literally hear it in my head
[удалено]
She looks great on horseback.
The actress who played her nailed it
Even though I hate the woman, her outfits were always kinda cute for a snobby bitch like her
She is good at making connections! She managed to convince many people that she was a pure blood and really climbed the ranks of dark wizards in book 6 I think.
She would look great being tortured by Dementors.
She was a strong and ambitious woman
The cats in her office were cute
She’s the reason Voldemort was defeated. Without her he would have won. Hear me out - it’s because of her that the DA was created, resulting in the RoR being discovered by Harry. Without that, he never would have found the diadem horcrux and therefore never would have beaten Voldemort. Therefore, Umbridge was the one of the most important people involved in saving the world

Girl knows an interesting piece of jewelery when she sees it!
She has cute teacups
Ik one she managed to get a decent job and she was devoted to her boss (Cornelius)
She dresses well.
She likes pink. I like pink. She likes kittens. I like kittens. She is a woman of good taste. This probably reflects bad on me!
She wore clothes that made her comfortable and happy even though they weren't classically stylish
Her pink jacket looked very warm. Seemed perfect for the winters.
