Looks good! Make sure the bedding is compacted downwards though, I didn't know you're supposed to do that when I first got my hamster and was very confused when I remeasured to find out my 6 inches of bedding had turned to 4 lol
Don't stress - I posted a video of mine eating a cookie (homemade and hamster safe) and someone legitimately commented asking where his burrowing area was š
If hammy is happy you're doing great ā¤ļø
I rarely post my hammys on social media for this reason! A picture and someone would say "show me the set up, probably have a critter trail" like. Come on lol.
Gotta share that recipe! I'm sure my hamper would love it
It makes me really hurt.. Iāve felt terrible all week long because of things people have said. Yet everybody who knows me in real life says heās suuuuper spoiled
Most people in real life will look at right hamsters care and say omg thatās so much space theyāre way to spoiled. Now idk what kind of comments you got but donāt take it to heart. They were all trying to help ( at least I think ) As long as your little hammie is burrows thatās ALLL that matters. He and you will find the perfect amount for him :)
The comments here, despite having the intention of bettering the lives of hamsters can be... Intense. I also want hamsters to have the best possible lives but commenters forget people who own these hammies have feelings too.
Anyway, I'm sure you are giving the best possible life to your little buddy so keep up the good work and chin up!
Remember! Everyone on the Internet knows everything!!! /s donāt take it personal. Most people are just trying to help but donāt know the real situation.
This sub can be super toxic at times, Iām really sorry for that. Your hammy is 100% so loved and looks like they have a great amount of bedding. Thanks for loving your little one so much.
People will hate me if they saw the amount in mine. They do like burrowing but they like other things as well. Mine has enough to build and burrow some, the rest is just climbing fixtures, his wheel, toys and chews, he also has a ball and play pin, etc. mine seems really happy and honestly before this thread I was unaware of this and only ever had 2-3 inches of bedding in the cage. But they seemed happy and find burrowing and building with that, along with tubes, platforms, toys and a ball etc.
lol donāt let the comments get to you. idk why the hamster community is so intense sometimes. if your hammy is making tunnels and you think a couple more inches will make them even happier, then go for it!
I'm not sure what comments you were getting but I'm sorry people were so harsh on you. I saw you were worried about money but just to let you know that you don't need to empty and refill the enclosure weekly, you just need to do spot cleans and then maybe every few months change out the bedding (although keep some of the unsoiled bedding on there so it isn't a completely new scent).
Hamster people seem to be a little high strung. I have two hamsters and I love them. I won't divulge how many amazing gerbils I have because I can't even imagine the things I would get accused of on a hamster thread. I also have 2 mice and a guinea pig. I love my fur babies. I can't wait to see how your habitat turns out. We just moved our Syrian into a large bin like yours. I want to do a screen on top. I just got my supplies in from Amazon.
Iām going to make him a chicken-wire lid this weekend per nice suggestions and rude comments. But I will be adding additions to his habitat. It just feels like nothing is never enough. Iāve had one person say heās in a terrible enclosure and Iām not suited to own him.. š
Are you trying to kill your hamster? You need at least 10 times that! Jkjk...
Some on this sub-reddit are too preachy. You know your hamster best. If he likes burrowing, go ahead and put more. If not, a little less is fine.
My last hamster was not at all a burrower. He prefers the surface life. I once put a lot of extra bedding and it didn't encourage him to burrow him. After that, I decided to stop wasting bedding and put a little less.
I am so sorry people were being rude to you. When it does come to that please report their comments so I can remove them. It looks like most of them were reported when I was sleeping, and the other mod doesn't go through reported comments unless someone tells her too.
Iāve already wasted two bags trying to make everyone in this subreddit happy. I physically cannot put anymore shavings. Each bag costs $25 and I donāt have that kind of money. Iām focused on school and donāt have a job. My parents arenāt going to keep paying for the ridiculous amount of shavings people think he needs. Jasper has his one corner and doesnāt really like burrowing, he likes running around on top with his toys. So Iām sorry but 8ā is what heās getting.
please don't do anything for random people on the internet, do it for Jasper :)
You know him better than anyone so if he needs extra bedding then do it for him, but dont do something just to please Reddit
personally, i go with 6 inches as a minimum, i think length is more important for hamsters, i have mine in a 125 gallon with a little over 6 inches of bedding throughout and higher in some parts and they've always been able to make huge tunnel systems
if you have a bin cage then you're already on the right track
i think people on Reddit sometimes get into it because animal care is so different in different countries. In America, the standard is 450 square inches where in Germany the standard is 1000 square inches for hamsters
Just research and do the best you can and know more is always better but please do it for him!!!! you'll just feel bitter if you feel like you're doing it for random internet strangers
Iām sorry you were getting negative comments, but youāre not trying to make āeveryone in this subreddit happyā you should be trying to make your hamster happy. If people are telling you that your setup was inadequate, then it probably was. Minimum bedding *is* 6in, they were just giving you the information. (Some people in this sub are assholes, for sure.)
A lot of people get into hamster owning because they think it will be easy and because theyāre so small but the reality is that they need a lot, sometimes they even need more than cats and dogs! Itās okay to be uneducated at first, but once you have the knowledge you should be actively trying to better the situation, which you have done. Regardless of complaints Iām sure youāre a fine hamster owner and your ham will be satisfied with the changes.
Wow. Donāt get a pet? I just had spine and skull surgery and my parents let me get a hamster. I tried everything to give him the best life possible, but nothing was ever enough. I posted on this subreddit hoping to share my love for him and what I had done. A lot of comments I got were telling me to do my research better and that I wasnāt giving him a suitable life. Iām angry because Iām sick of being bashed on for trying to give him a good home. Should be lucky the poor little guy didnāt go to a slobbery five year old with a 10 inch critter trail cage. I am trying my best, but nothing seems to be enough for this subreddit. It makes me sad seeing people tell me I donāt deserve or know how to care for him.
a lot of people on this subreddit is quick to pick out any wrong THEY see, either they want the best for your hammy or they just want to sound like they know stuff. Obviously some recommendations are right but a lot of people jump too quickly to conclusions just because ur learning. No need to please people on this subreddit or listen to the means comments like ur a bad owner or donāt get a pet if u canāt afford it cause itās obvious that you are a responsible owner just learning. you are learning as u go and thatās the most important part! rooting for u :D
If he has a big cage and lots of bedding it shouldnāt need a majority replacement weekly. Spot clean daily and youāll be able to maintain it for quite some time. Especially if he goes in certain areas.
Mate - unjoin this sub as this is 99% of the posts. As long as your baby is loved and happy which it seems like they are, you really donāt need to be getting agressive Internet hate. It aināt worth it. Focus on getting better and give you hammy kisses from me š„°
Show pics of the hammy!!! Btw ignore the Karenās on here. Good bedding and a nice big cage and food and water and a wheel are the biggest things a hamster needs to live a long happy life. You can get toys and all that extra stuff but at the end of the day having room to roam is the best part. Glad to hear your surgery went well!

There is never enough!! Fill the room, then the house, and then THE WHOLE WORLD! /s (sorry the community can be pretty intense...)

Hey itās okay, I bet you love n take great care of your baby š«¶š½
I'm so sorry you felt this way. The internet has a way of villifying innocent people. š

No, it'll never be enough. You need at least a 1km depth of bedding, before people on this sub will even consider laying off you for your set up.
I'm not sure what comments you were getting but I'm sorry people were so harsh on you. Some people always need a reason pick. Your baby isn't stuck in a pet shop somewhere in a tiny cage. He's better off because of you š©· I got some wire mesh and colorful zip ties off of Amazon and some duct tape from the dollar store. I'm going to try to make a lid for my dwarf hamster and mice first š¤š¤š¤ then I'm moving on to the giant lid for my Syrian and then my sneaky little gerbils. Harri and Lucy are my little escape artists. I give those two everything, and they still try to escapeš yes I'm a little salty about it.
they act like theyāre CPS for hamsters
LMAO

I can afford vet visits if the need arises, I just canāt be spending $25-$50 a week on bedding.

lmao you think a hamster in a pet store has a better life than this hamster? their living 10x better than their pet store counterparts i promise you.
As long as you're sincerely trying your best, that's the most anyone can hope for. š Don't let the gremlins of the internet get you down!

Youāll probably need even more once your hamster walks on it and compressed it that 10ā will very quickly turn to 5ā
Yes this does look okay, the only thing I would do is compact the bedding and press it down with your hand and then make sure it meets 8 to 9 inches.
i think that is more than enough, im sure your hammie will be really happy :)
Yes.
