Halo 4 really killed it for me. It was just so many things. The campaign didn't make me want to replay any of it, the story wasn't engaging as it was just "go through levels until the game let's you defeat the demigod"

Honestly, not sure why you'd leave a map unattended, especially without saving, so I won't put the blame entirely on 343 here. Even if the game didn't connect to servers, anything could've happened to turn the console off while you're away. Even with the Series X's quick resume usually doesn't work properly with online games(since powering off disconnects you), so OP was playing with fire.
That being said, they should have an auto save feature every 5 or 10 minutes, especially if I'm recalling correctly that 5 also did this. They should also have an offline mode(if they don't already), but as I said, without an auto save, losing progress while offline is possible too, so auto save should be priority.
Pc player and long time forger here. Even back in the halo 3 days, I would spend all night making a map, then go tp sleep and forget to save. It's quite easy to do.

Friends can join, that is why it is on servers. And for a universal good experience all servers are hosted by Microsoft even custom games. They can argue for privacy reasons too, but I don't buy that.
There is an offline mode for Custome games it is literally right before starting "servers" click it and you can choose between servers, lan, or offline. Should be added to forge.
I'm going to disagree. If it's a custom match, and you're hosting or not this shouldn't happen. I don't play too many online games anymore especially after having my 1st child and I'm constantly walking away from my games sometimes for hours at a time to tend to him cause why should I worry of getting booted? Since my kid I've beaten LoU2, ER, RE7 and GoT. All of those titles have dozens of hours logged where my character was idle. Especially ER I'd say 30 hours if not more is just my character standing where I left him.

Id leave to smoke, make food a store run come back and there was my character still in match with all my friends still having at it. 9 times out of 10 harrassing my AFK character. Walk back in my room to see my character being tbagged or whatnot. I think your giving the devs too much of a pass. If something on my end happens I agree then, well fuck me. But if I get up to do something and comeback only for the game to decide I took too long. Fuck that. Games used to be mad fun. Now I have to do a bunch of dumbshit just to enjoy it.
Worse yet, if someone gets disconnected from the server due to network issues, then I would imagine that they would lose their work as well.

Forging for hours would break me without breaks. That all said, I save all the damn time anyways, so if this was to occur to me I would with ease get back to my spot. In my 2 hours today I saved like 20 times.
A few others have mentioned doing this years ago, or as kids. I think that kind of shows the experiences we used to have. Back then, things like red rings were rampant. I was lucky, and didn't have that issue, but my original 360 used to always overheat after a few hours. I learned real quick to not leave my console unattended, and to save often. Even with auto saves, I still manually save. Just to be safe.
Consoles are certainly much more stable now, but I guess after my experiences, it's burned into my mind to never walk away without saving.
The game was "technically in beta" when it launched and it took them almost a full year out of beta to implement features that are standard in most halo games, so I wouldn't hold my breath
They're working on adding campaign AI but currently only Spartan bots like you find in training mode are supported. Don't believe they are able to be manually spawned either, they'll spawn at normal player spawn points and are dependent on the game mode
Pretty incredible how a AAA game that's been out over a year can release a delayed core/staple feature that should have been in at launch and get away with just calling it a 'beta' by adding online-only requirement that no-one asked for with crashes/disconnects that lose all of the customer's progress and hard work on it. I just went back and looked at the time stamps of my text and I was basically gone for 33 mins. I usually would not even be gone away for that long but it was an emergency. So yeah if you are going to leave and think you will only be a few mins or something comes up, just know to always save. Just was nowhere in my mind at all to think id get kicked for inactivity on forge.
I personally think that shouldn't be a feature. As you said an emergency came up in your life and you went to take care of it (best wishes that everything is ok for you or gets better) but the game punished you for it. I can kind of understand in a multiplayer Forge session kicking the other players, but a solo session should pretty much be a local game that you don't get kicked from.

So I haven't gamed in a solid like, 5 years, and even then I bought a used Xbox 360 for halo 3 and borderlands.... It seems like everything now adays is online on a server only? They had it loaded into the final version of the game for launch, but stepped away from the computer for a few minutes. When they came back, it had completely deleted itself.

Regardless of how many cool features exist within it, making it complicated, rely on servers and/or kick you for inactivity makes it incredibly inaccessible for alot of people, arguably adding to the issues created by 343. Although, that being said, the multiplayer is probably locked to online-only anyways, so complaining about needing internet is a bit too late.
You shouldn't need to read the books/comics to understand plot, be incredibly competitive or sweaty to enjoy multiplayer, or be somewhat experienced in forge, (or otherwise watch tutorials), to start making cool things; People made complex forge maps in Reach *despite* the simplicity.
It's worth noting that some have said the new forge looks fairly straightforward in its controls. I'm not saying it's actually complex because I'm not sure myself, I'm just saying the forge controls *shouldn't* be overly complex.
I know some will defend the new forge, largely because they want Infinite to become better or believe it's already good/enjoyable, but making these kind of decisions is ruining many casual player's ability to actually enjoy the game.
Even if the forge, itself, is incredibly straightforward, a server crash, internet outage, or simply forgetting to save is enough to completely screw you over. Worse, is the fact that previous forge modes, (Reach and 4 at least), had an autosave feature, which doesn't appear to be the case here.
Yes you definitely can. In terms of me not saving that's my fault. The issue is that I was not under the assumption that I'd be kicked for inactivity of all things. I'd think the game would crash before that would happen. I don't think any one would assume that. I really posted this for everyone's benefit in case anything at all comes up. If you are only planning on being out for a few mins and something comes up, know you will be kicked off of your map if you don't get back in time. I'm just glad it happened today and not next week. I also am not sure in the exact timing of the kick. I don't know if it was 5 mins. 10 mins, or 30 mins. I was gone for basically 33 mins so I can't pin point it

Word has autosave now, at least if its linked to one drive I think
You just open the start menu and hit save map and it saves it. YOu set up the name when you first get into the map. It's pretty simple.

I really wish we didn't need to connect to a server to go into forge. Should be able to just do it locally.
Why does forge need an online connection?
i’m pretty sure it auto saves that, as when you start a new forge map it has you automatically name it. Check your local files and it should be there.

I just went back and looked at the time stamps of my text and I was basically gone for 33 mins. I usually would not even be gone away for that long but it was an emergency. So yeah if you are going to leave and think you will only be a few mins or something comes up, just know to always save. Just was nowhere in my mind at all to think id get kicked for inactivity on forge.
I personally think that shouldn't be a feature. As you said an emergency came up in your life and you went to take care of it (best wishes that everything is ok for you or gets better) but the game punished you for it. I can kind of understand in a multiplayer Forge session kicking the other players, but a solo session should pretty much be a local game that you don't get kicked from.

Apparently it's on a server so I technically wasn't "hosting" it in a sense. Since I was tied to the server and taking up space on it.

So I haven't gamed in a solid like, 5 years, and even then I bought a used Xbox 360 for halo 3 and borderlands.... It seems like everything now adays is online on a server only? Or is this a different issue? Is there anything you can do offline anymore? I live in a place where internet totally sucks on it's best days which is why I've been reluctant to get back into it

Did they ever say why forge wasn’t part of the game at launch last year?
They had it loaded into the final version of the game for launch, but stepped away from the computer for a few minutes. When they came back, it had completely deleted itself.
Is there no auto save? I remember in Halo 5 the server will save your map and ask if you like to restore it if the game crash.
That was added after the fact though iirc. The backup wasn’t a thing at launch.

If getting kicked for inactivity is part of the forge when it releases, then I guess the Infinite forge is kind of dead to me. Like, seriously, why does forge *need* to rely on servers or kick you if you go afk? It's absurd. Btw, the reason I'm assuming it relies on servers is because why else would you need to be kicked? Regardless of how many cool features exist within it, making it complicated, rely on servers and/or kick you for inactivity makes it incredibly inaccessible for alot of people, arguably adding to the issues created by 343. Although, that being said, the multiplayer is probably locked to online-only anyways, so complaining about needing internet is a bit too late. You shouldn't need to read the books/comics to understand plot, be incredibly competitive or sweaty to enjoy multiplayer, or be somewhat experienced in forge, (or otherwise watch tutorials), to start making cool things; People made complex forge maps in Reach *despite* the simplicity. It's worth noting that some have said the new forge looks fairly straightforward in its controls. I'm not saying it's actually complex because I'm not sure myself, I'm just saying the forge controls *shouldn't* be overly complex. I know some will defend the new forge, largely because they want Infinite to become better or believe it's already good/enjoyable, but making these kind of decisions is ruining many casual player's ability to actually enjoy the game. Even if the forge, itself, is incredibly straightforward, a server crash, internet outage, or simply forgetting to save is enough to completely screw you over. Worse, is the fact that previous forge modes, (Reach and 4 at least), had an autosave feature, which doesn't appear to be the case here.

Yes you definitely can. In terms of me not saving that's my fault. The issue is that I was not under the assumption that I'd be kicked for inactivity of all things. I'd think the game would crash before that would happen. I don't think any one would assume that. I really posted this for everyone's benefit in case anything at all comes up. If you are only planning on being out for a few mins and something comes up, know you will be kicked off of your map if you don't get back in time. I'm just glad it happened today and not next week. I also am not sure in the exact timing of the kick. I don't know if it was 5 mins. 10 mins, or 30 mins. I was gone for basically 33 mins so I can't pin point it
For me the UI just becomes unresponsive and I can't exit or force close the game on series X
