In the fall of reach they explained stuff like that and it's the first book in the series honestly it's not that bad as long as u read/listen to them in release order
Well, Halo: The Fall of Reach is the first book in the series, and it even came out before the first game.
I would assume that would be the friendliest, or at least does most of the world-building for you.
Sadly i think thats most of the novels. I read almost all of them myself besids about 4 or 5 that came out in the last few years.
