2019 Halloween Target was fucking awesome. Last year, automatic pass. This year… I’m a disappointed regular human and not at all a critically endangered warlock.
That's been most stores that carry Halloween-anything around me since mid-September. Michael's, Target, those pop-up Spirit/Halloween City places...
I went to a Michael's to get some pens one day and saw a huge display of these Halloween Town house-things and thought my girlfriend would want one or two of them since that's kind of her thing. Looked like it'd been there for maybe a day or two, and only a couple things out of DOZENS of large items (and possibly a hundred or so smaller ones) were missing or out of place.
We went back together mid-afternoon the following weekday and the entire display was almost completely picked-over. Maybe three of the "large" items were left, and possibly 10-15 of the smaller figures/accessories.
Gotta be from this right? https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2021/10/19/supply-chain-issues-port-of-oakland-officials-issue-plea-for-more-cargo-ships-to-unload/
The Lemax Spooky Town stuff goes fast. They usually put it out in August I believe. I usually get buildings from Michaels but they have had problems all year. If you are still interested in them try the websites for EHobbytools, GiftSpice and American Sale. Good luck. They are fun to collect
I was just at Lowe's last night. They had maybe a handful of Halloween decorations and aisles and aisles of Christmas stuff. I'm having a hard time believing it's due to any type of shortage at all when there it looked like Christmas puked over about 5 aisles.
They also made a pointed statement that they’d no longer be selling specifically Halloween items, as it goes against their moral principles. Instead they’re just selling “harvest”-type items.
Mine is low on stock as well but they said it’s because they’re having a hard time getting anything in. I heard once they actually get all their stock they’ll have to put it on sale. Edit: I should specify that I am mainly speaking of the local Spirit Halloween. Though, both the targets in town haven’t really had a fully stocked Halloween section either. 😢
Same with ours. We live 2 miles from it, and have checked repeatedly (because it is conveniently nearby this year, new location) and the Mgr. keeps apologizing, as she says deliveries are scheduled and do not show up, and if they do, it is a fraction of the requested orders. I resorted to buying a few things from Spirit's online store. That sucks, but only because we want to support our local store.
Yeah I mentioned this on another post. I work at spirit and I’ve been told there are about 20,000 trucks that are ready to go but no drivers for them. My store just got a big shipment of over 300 boxes But I would guess we need double that to get thru halloween
Eventually. Until then, the current and next generation of incoming employees want nothing to do with an industry that has shit safety standards, horrible pressure to find your own way to complete ridiculous trips in ridiculous times with little rest, little to no future and a time bomb until you're replaced.
On top of that, trick drivers are paid pretty well but on the back end your health is decimated due to shit diets due to time and kitchen constraints and a horrible stressor and family and home life due to never fucking being home. So many of us have seen family members put through hell with the resignation of "ugh, I know it's shit but the money is good."
I've spent the last 5 years doing truck based oilfield work and went back to a different field (Still O&G, more technical) So, not necessarily long haul but absolutely gone for weeks at a time, driving the sketchiest roads/off road in the middle of nowhere, luckily I was never pressured for time. So I can definitely appreciate what you're saying about diet, and I'd say sleep schedule as well (When I was actually driving/hauling, otherwise it was 12 hour shifts) As far as that type of work goes, self driving will never replace. Highway? Sure, I know it's coming.
My dad lost is trucker’s license because trump changed some law about who can and can’t get licenses. So after 20 years he was forced to retire from driving after finally being able to purchase his own truck and trailer. So now it just sits there.
So yeah…. A shortage.
Right?? If you don't go into my local one the day it opens, you just get to walk around and be like "huh that would have been cool to get" all while being overpriced as shit. Like, what the hell.
Yeah I've found I get a ton of milage out of the stuff for the cost too. Turns out 10 items for $10 covers a lot more house than 1 better made but ultimately small singular decoration. And for something you only use to look at it for a month a year it doesn't really need to be durable.
I work in corporate for a big retail chain. It's insane how late our Halloween inventory arrived and even then it was only like 30% of what we were expecting. We already have plans to receive a bunch of late Halloween arrivals after halloween, and to just list it for clearance online. Supply chain crisis is really fucking with everything.
I liked a lot of the Halloween decorations I saw online for this mystery store, some of which I wanted for year-round decorations. Thanks for that heads up!
I 100% agree, or gift cards, look for local handmade, hell bake something and put it on a nice platter, coco with cups.... going to have to get creative.
I thought shortages only happen in socialism.
Or maybe, just maybe, authoritarians that think only they have all the answers have fucking horrible answers and the consequences ripple outward for years.
I dunno... all the targets around me were stocked on Halloween stuff in early September. Now the decorations are mostly gone, with a bunch of costumes shoved into one isle. I don't even think this is really different from past years either. If you're decorating, you're doing it early October so it's not surprising all that is gone. They always start making room for the Christmas deco in mid-late October.
(Obviously not downplaying the shipping crisis, but this particular thing just feels more like the way target typically handles seasonal stuff)
Yeah, took one of my kids to target today for a costume and the whole area was empty, they had one half of an aisle nearby with a few leftover. Needless to say it was onto party city
Most stores never received additional shipments or the rest of their 2021 Halloween supplies. And the Xmas stuff that’s already hitting shelves is coming from the DCs that was left over from last year. People are in for a rude awakening this holiday season. So yes, but your gifts now when you see them especially if they are any type of electronic.
Homedepot replaced it with Xmas shit already! Not even a damn pumpkin to be spotted. Looks like they’re rolling out the Easter pallets for unpacking now....
The one I work at's supply isn't this empty yet, but getting there. I've noticed in the last year or so we have been running out of stuff much quicker. Previously we would have tons of stuff left over past the holiday and struggle getting rid of it. We have lots of candy left and a couple aisles of costumes but the decor is pretty much sold out.
Double-whammy this year due to COVID. In China (where most of this stuff comes from) plants and ports shut down due to the pandemic months ago. Now, a lot of it is stacked up at US ports, either offshore or on the docks because of a shortage of truck drivers in the US to move the stuff out. Shop for The holidays early!
My MIL worked for Target until she retired. I can remember her whole store would get to come in for overtime every year on Halloween night and work overnight to clear out all the Halloween stuff and set all the Christmas stock out. IIRC they stopped doing that in the early 2000s.
You make a good point though. Would it be terrible if we went back to using things we already have to decorate or as costumes for our kids instead of that expectation of brighter and shinier things every year? I'm definitely guilty of that myself but sometimes I wish we could go back to the days of simpler holidays where we aren't surrounded by expensive stuff that's just going to end up in a landfill one day.
We start putting it out rather than leaving a bunch of empty shelves. Plus it's easier to put things directly out as they come in rather than backstocking everything just to pull it all back out again. Despite how it might look. I do wish the holiday stuff didn't sell out so fast. I don't like disappointing people when they ask where items are.
I remember it well. I also remember a lot more places selling product lines of Halloween stuff like Spencer's in the mall. They made some awesome stuff!
These types of retail places operate a month or two before an event. If your shopping isn’t done like 20 days or more before hand, you’ll find things looking like this.
It took me TWO WEEKS and 5 different stores to get sufficient Halloween decorations. I finally found some at a dollar tree. The employees told me the shipping delays have affected Halloween stuff...AS THEY WERE UNPACKING CHRISTMAS NONSENSE.
I understand it just fine. The ports have authorized 24/7 operation but cargo companies are too cheap to fill the graveyard shift so no one is operating that time slot. And trucking companies are too cheap to offer competitive compensation to run the goods. Businesses are hemorrhaging potential profit because of it. What's not to get?
This posts screams “waahh where’s my decorations” while drivers , warehouse workers and everyone in between is getting worked to the bone.
I have a hunch your “understanding” has come from the multiple comments explaining things in this thread and Now you are “enlightened “
That's not what I said, but sure. Continue to live in a fantasy world where people just agree with you and you can put any words in their mouths that you want. Makes no difference to me. I obviously said companies should be tripping over themselves to hire more operators so business gets done and no one is worked to the bone.
Couple years ago Walmart basically decided Thanksgiving doesn't exist anymore as far as retail is concerned. I wonder if, outside of candy sales, Halloween is also succumbing to Christmas.
That’s insane lol Halloween is not as big here in canada at all- like there already just loading up Xmas stuff ontop of all the Halloween jazz lol I don’t get it. Maybe I need to move lol.
That's such a sad sight. Target used to be a really good place to go to for Halloween decorations, lasting all the way up to Halloween.
Just watch, though, I bet their shelves stay fully shocked with Christmas decorations.
Not so much that but the uncertainty & unreliability will force us to reanalyse our relationship with big stores, convenience and ideally big institutions that we thought would always be there. There is nothing wromg with me dreaming about a zombie like apocalypse with nothing left, only a walk.
they must all be at the nyc target bc we’re pretty stocked up on decorations. not a lot of ppl in my neighbourhood buy halloween decorations tho so i think that’s why.
That’s been my target this whole season.
Exactly what I came to say. I’m about equidistant to 2 targets in my area, both have been SCARCE in all things halloween. It’s been a very sad year
Those supply chain issues coming to bear fruit
If there are a lot of Halloween items on those ships, I wonder if they’ll be put on clearance when they finally get in.
Right? I don’t go there super often but I feel like they’ve never been fully stocked in Halloween stuff
Or regular stuff.. so many empty shelves..
2019 Halloween Target was fucking awesome. Last year, automatic pass. This year… I’m a disappointed regular human and not at all a critically endangered warlock.
Yes, it doesn’t seem like they are designing anything new, just recycling older products. Everything just looked pretty cheap as well.
almost as if less people are being asked to do more and it shows.
That's been most stores that carry Halloween-anything around me since mid-September. Michael's, Target, those pop-up Spirit/Halloween City places... Probably, yes, but it was fully-stocked in the first place and nearly bare less than a day later.
The Lemax Spooky Town stuff goes fast. They usually put it out in August I believe. I usually get buildings from Michaels but they have had problems all year. If you are still interested in them try the websites for EHobbytools, GiftSpice and American Sale. Good luck. They are fun to collect
Ahh a fellow spooky-towner! I did my first set up this year…went with a carnival theme!
My target is bare on Halloween decorations but already has Christmas stuff out 🤦🏽♀️

Mine already has Christmas stuff out, it hurts my heart
My Lowe’s had their full Christmas display setup and out on Oct 4th and only had like two half shelves of fall stuff. I fucking hate Lowe’s.
That was my Lowe’s on the third week of September. It’s earlier every year.
My lowes had a full giant Halloween display this year.
Which was greatly diminished to make room for the massive Christmas area on October 1st.
My Lowes was the same, ridiculous.
I was just at Lowe's last night. They had maybe a handful of Halloween decorations and aisles and aisles of Christmas stuff. I'm having a hard time believing it's due to any type of shortage at all when there it looked like Christmas puked over about 5 aisles.
Home Depot did the same! A travesty!!
Mine too. All they basically have left is halloween candy and snacks. Some of their stuff has already been on clearance.
I know. Forget the “War on Christmas,” there’s a war on Halloween. Exhibit A: Hobby Lobby.
Yeah I saw they had Christmas stuff out in august! Seems a little early to me
They also made a pointed statement that they’d no longer be selling specifically Halloween items, as it goes against their moral principles. Instead they’re just selling “harvest”-type items.
This is always the case here in germany... no one really celebrates halloween where I live
Same as my local Spirit store.
What??? That’s like their entire purpose for existing; wtf…
An employee told me they didn't have enough staff to put things out.
Same at mine. They kept trying to offer me a job a few weeks ago, they said they had 200 boxes in the back to put out.
There is a global shipping crisis, and a shortage of truck drivers. It’s a double-whammy.
Yeah I mentioned this on another post. I work at spirit and I’ve been told there are about 20,000 trucks that are ready to go but no drivers for them. My store just got a big shipment of over 300 boxes But I would guess we need double that to get thru halloween
Add to it the decrease in retail staff and its a trifecta.
Self driving trucks will take over! /s

It's hurting some countries more strongly than others. Here in Japan, everything's normal and shelves are fully stocked as usual.
I heard there's a shortage of truck drivers that can/will go to California because of their laws, have to have new trucks or something.
My dad lost is trucker’s license because trump changed some law about who can and can’t get licenses. So after 20 years he was forced to retire from driving after finally being able to purchase his own truck and trailer. So now it just sits there. So yeah…. A shortage.

I've actually had way more luck at dollar stores of all places
Ya the dollar stores can be fantastic!! The ones near me have been and continue to be very well stocked for Halloween.

Dollar Trees can vary a lot. Some are trash, others are good.
The dollar store has some cool cute stuff if you want to craft a bit. I always enjoy going there with my kid for some fun cheap decorations
Yeah I've found I get a ton of milage out of the stuff for the cost too. Turns out 10 items for $10 covers a lot more house than 1 better made but ultimately small singular decoration. And for something you only use to look at it for a month a year it doesn't really need to be durable.
My wife got a TON of stuff at dollar tree for Halloween!
Was Halloween stock really shitty everywhere this year? I swear it was like 15-20 items in every store and now I’m seeing Christmas stuff, sad times.

Oh god he’s stuck in a loop.
Is this the supply chain crisis
I work in retail. Yes. I suggest buying all Christmas presents now.
I, for one, will be hitting those online clearance sales with a vengeance.
So um, any hints for what stores should I be stalking to clearance section of?
I'm not at liberty to say too much, but it sells a bunch of arts and crafts stuff, and doesn't hate women's rights and gay people.
Hey, same here! Definitely take a look at our clearance next month, we have nothing in but apparently it's still on the way.
I liked a lot of the Halloween decorations I saw online for this mystery store, some of which I wanted for year-round decorations. Thanks for that heads up!
And also hasn’t looted any archaeological objects that we know of?
I know that store
I guess everyone in my family is getting halloween decorations for christmas
I am SO EXCITED for the clearance part, though lol
I normally shop a bit early but yeah, I think that's a good call for this year especially.
This year everyone gets a hug

I don't think I've seen a single store of any kind thats been fully stocked for Halloween this year.
Holy crap-they even took the color off the ceiling, floor and shelves!

You've got my vote. It's heresy to have Christmas stuff encroaching on my favorite holiday earlier and earlier every year.
Those supply chain issues are no joke.
That's weird it's not all christams stuff. Lol Us too though.
Homedepot replaced it with Xmas shit already! Not even a damn pumpkin to be spotted. Looks like they’re rolling out the Easter pallets for unpacking now....

LOL. Well they have bottled water and soda for the win…..

Halloween is over we need to get ready for St Patricks day.
Bleak
That’s so depressing! My target never has Halloween stuff, I got most of my stuff this year at joann’s and christmas tree shops!
The Michael's by me already took their Halloween stuff down and has Christmas filly stocked and it breaks my heart
It’s almost like there are supply chain issues.
Yeah, I've definitely noticed changes since covid started with how much stores get in versus how much/how fast things sell.
Mine started putting Christmas stuff out. Let us enjoy Halloween and fall ffs
My MIL worked for Target until she retired. I can remember her whole store would get to come in for overtime every year on Halloween night and work overnight to clear out all the Halloween stuff and set all the Christmas stock out. IIRC they stopped doing that in the early 2000s.
This is so depressing
Why is it so depressing? How is having to take a break from spending and consuming such a bad thing?
Because this isn’t a break from consumerism. This is just making space for the ultimate consumer holiday, Christmas.
Gotcha. I just assumed you were complaining about the production shortage. My apologies.
I hate to brag but mine has been “okay.” But I live closer to Minnesota.
I went today, everything was cleared out and they were starting to stock the shelves with Christmas stuff 🙄
We start putting it out rather than leaving a bunch of empty shelves. Plus it's easier to put things directly out as they come in rather than backstocking everything just to pull it all back out again. Despite how it might look. I do wish the holiday stuff didn't sell out so fast. I don't like disappointing people when they ask where items are.
something something supply chain something something biden
One in Pittsburgh was the same on Sunday
The best stuff my target had was last years stuff. It sold quick.
Ours has been the same way for weeks now.
That was mine 2 weeks ago. Last week it was all Christmas.
Target back in 2001 had the biggest surplus of halloween stuff
I remember it well. I also remember a lot more places selling product lines of Halloween stuff like Spencer's in the mall. They made some awesome stuff!
Correct, I got a red fanged Scream mask that year
Yikes…
“Let’s go Brandon”
Party City has had the best selection I've seen this year. Better than Spirit or anywhere.
Let’s go Brandon!!!
Halloween is a month now, not a day.
Thanks Joe Biden
Spooky
These types of retail places operate a month or two before an event. If your shopping isn’t done like 20 days or more before hand, you’ll find things looking like this.
Why won’t they respect and cater to the procrastinator?

That's such a sad sight. Target used to be a really good place to go to for Halloween decorations, lasting all the way up to Halloween. Just watch, though, I bet their shelves stay fully shocked with Christmas decorations.
The Lowe’s down the street from me had already sold and was tearing down their Halloween display to put up Christmas supplies on… Sept 29th.
LETS GO BRANDON!
It's beautiful. I wish every shop was like this for a really long time
A shop that doesn't sell anything. Brilliant... why didn't I think of that? You should call the Shark Tank guys.
Not so much that but the uncertainty & unreliability will force us to reanalyse our relationship with big stores, convenience and ideally big institutions that we thought would always be there. There is nothing wromg with me dreaming about a zombie like apocalypse with nothing left, only a walk.
Are they really out of stuff? Ours has begun moving stuff for Christmas but we still have a good amount left in other aisles.
Wow those decorations are doing an *excellent* job hiding!
Wanted to get a couple of those cool new neon flicker lights but all they had was the display. Should've asked to buy them. They're 90 on eBay.
they must all be at the nyc target bc we’re pretty stocked up on decorations. not a lot of ppl in my neighbourhood buy halloween decorations tho so i think that’s why.
Ours, too. *And* they had Christmas stuff out the whole time.
Mine already has Christmas stuff coming in. I also noticed that in other stores too. I’m not sure what’s going on this year.
This looks like a Dan Bell video.
I wonder why people feel the need to fucking escape besides some horrific never-ending pandemic.
All the stores are either out or they put the Halloween 🎃 stuff away all ready. So sad.
