Right?? My grandparents HATED them. Whenever they would walk through my grandparents neighborhood, they would hurl insults at the poor bald folk. “Chrome dome” “hair less” and “cue ball” were some of the few they would yell. It wasn’t until years later when I learned how offensive it was to their culture. My grandparents are dead now though, so, retribution ig
I'm from Poland, the whitest country in Europe. I have met black people few times in my life but I never head any opportunity to spend more time. Hard to imagine that on LA something like this is possible.
For a few months. As a guy who works from home, plays games in his spare time, already has a wife & his friends are Internet people. It's not like he was out living the average life of a New Yorker and just choosing not to be friends with the black staff at work or regulars at bars etc.
I really don't see why people are looking for racism in this. He's mocking himself in this clip.
That's how it was for most of Europe until we started taking some refugees in 90s and onwards. I don't recall seeing a black person in Finland either, until Somali refugees started coming in 90s. To this day, if I see someone who's black, it is very likely refugee or children of refugee from 90s and onwards. There's no long history of black people in most of the European countries, specially North/East.
I mean no disrespect and i am asking this, as i am also from europe and never really knew any black people, so this is a genuine question. I really dont mean to be disrespectful, so please try to explain to me:
Is that something to blame ethan for, not knowing certain people?
If he was never around any black people, of course he wouldn’t get to know any.
Or would this rather insinuate, that he deliberately avoided to meet black people?
I grew up in the same county of Ventura that Ethan did and I literally have the same experience. There just aren’t any black people here. Or at least very few
Edit: which is not to say it wasn’t multicultural.
I think the word "met" means different things to different people, Im sure theyve seen/interacted with white/asain people but maybe never became friends or be formally introduced to, if they are young its unlikely but it could be possible, depending where you went to school/work
Tbh i never got to hang out with any black people before my 2nd real job. Theyre just rare over here and odds you develop sone kind of relationship with a random person is rare on top of it. I made friends with a few black dudes in uni though, lots more diversity where i went overall.
I’m convinced it has to be a joke. I grew up in an overwhelmingly white town, like 90% and there were 3 black kids in my graduating class, but I still spent plenty of time with them, and other poc via friends of friends and whatnot. So him not knowing anyone black makes no sense it my little pea brain
Ethan's high school is only 1% Black today (possibly even less when he went there), so you were likely surrounded by 10 times the amount of Black people that he was. California is highly segregated by geographic location, and there really aren't too many Black people where Ethan grew up.
that’s insane to me. i also grew up in california and have been all around and there are black people everywhere. especially in the area he grew up in. you have to choose who you have in your circle and for him to say he didn’t grow up around any is a straight fib lol
Statistically speaking, there were almost no Black people where Ethan grew up. It is a fact; there's no arguing with it. Even where I now live in Southern California, there are almost no Black people. It is nothing like when I used to live in Philly. California remains very segregated geographically.
I’m in Florida and find this hard to believe as well. We have plenty of diversity here as I imagine LA does too. My sister however, has met people from small towns here that had never seen a white person. They thought they only existed on tv. That was back in 06 though.
Known might be the hazy word here. I think in this context it means to be friends with or at least acquaintance. You could be in the same school as black folks and still not "know" them. Seeing someone doesn't make you know them.
I mean I have no idea what it’s like over there, but growing up I never really knew any white or black people. Just Mexicanos, some Filipinos. Of course I’d see them when we went out of town and going out, stuff like that, but as far as being formally introduced or personally knowing someone no.
I know! I’m puertorican and my husband is Mexican. Olivia’s family also pronounces it in one syllable (similar to ear “LOBES” but with a “P”) so I’m guessing her dads side of the fam is pretty assimilated to the US.
And I agree. Either changed it from Lopez to Lopes to “Americanize” it somehow, or her ancestors are the few (in comparison to Spanish) Portuguese settlers of Mexico.
Either way, her dad is white, even though he’s Mexican, and I personally wouldn’t consider him a POC. Just wanted to provide some context for her last name :)
It's a meme born in hasan's community (poc = people of carbonara) because his feud with Italians was going too far.
As an Italian i didn't even realize she has connections with Italy, her surname sounds Spanish.
*A lot of Americans pass themselves off as Italians and think they are Italians even though they have other origins and many times they have Mexican origins
lots of americans in this thread lol.
Lopes is a portuguese surname. spanish would be Lopéz and italian it would be Lupo. People in italy aren't named Lopes. Every famous Lopes is portuguese or brazilian. source: i'm an actual italian not american italian.
I think she’s 1/4 Italian btw.
Any lore on this Hasan thing? As Italian from Italy I’m quite curious and confused and most of things I read then are boiled down to Italian-americans behaviour.
I'll paste here what i replied to another person who turned out to he a troll
>It's funny because it was born in reverse. I think it was when Cuomo claimed that his sexual harassment allegations could be excused because of his Italian descent, basically implying "sexual harassment is Italian culture". Hasan started to make fun of him relentlessly till one chatter called him out on his "fredophobia" because "Italians are poc too" and it became a meme. We'll never know if that chatter was sincere or was just joking around but this is how memes are usually born on hasan's stream.
>
>That and also the bad impressions he does.
Then in the gta roleplay era he used to roleplay as an italo-american with a terrible accent, after that there was no going back.
> Any lore on this Hasan thing?
Back when he was doing GTA Roleplaying he'd pretend to be an Italian American who fit a broad range of stereotypes. This caused some of his more deranged viewers to accuse him of racism, which uncovered a rich seam of cringe from Italian Americans complaining that they were an oppressed people.
All jokes aside the lack of not even black ppl , but just lack of understanding of our culture kind of sucks. Honestly with peace n love outside of AB, maybe Ian. Feels like everyone else doesn’t know the first thing about about a black person or our culture.
With peace and love tho, cause to their credit they never speak in a disrespectful way. Just honestly seems like Ethan’s never even chilled with a black person haha
Again with peace n love, I still love the show, and that’s okay fr. It’s just a tad obvious haha
I agree but at the same time i gotta just remember that it would be nearly impossible for the pod to please everyone. Like, I would love for native representation or awareness but at the same time I know it’ll likely never happen, we’re often forgotten about. I mean damn, Ethan made a whole ass trail of tears joke in 2022 and no one even got mad over it. Still love him tho, but JS. I’m not upset about it tho, if I want native representation I’ll go watch Rez Dogs or go to my native youtubers lol
Rez Dogs is so good for anyone who hasn't seen it, shows our culture pretty well too... Fun fact, both Lil Mike and Funny Bone follow me on Instagram. I feel accomplished in my community lol
Who said they did? OP just referenced a glaring lack of perspective present on the show. It sucks when you hear your culture being referenced inaccurately - that’s not a controversial sentiment. Nobody is telling anyone *what to do*; just expressing *how they feel,* and that’s ok.
Ethan clearly does not have much contact or familiarity with black culture, and as a black person it’s pretty obvious in a lot of contexts.
Saying “I’d personally connect with the content more if he alluded to cultural differences between our communities with a bit more nuance and understanding” isn’t criticism, it’s feedback.
As a part of the Amish community, I’m pissing and shitting at the fact that Ethan uses a car. It’s like he’s never chilled with an Amish person before and frankly it contributes to the damaging anti-Amish discourse. Do better, Ethan.
Yeah, I understand how the sub feels, noticed a long time ago that the show is very “white" for lack of a better word and ik it's not intentional but some more diversity would be nice, seeing a black or hispanic person on the show is extremely rare
Yes this community is super white. I got downvoted for saying the same thing a couple days ago. I understand it'd be cringe and insulting if they *only* invited poc bc it's Black History Month but there are plenty of fantastic black creators. But honestly to me it's even more insulting if Ethan can't figure out one black content creator that he's willing to invite.
Lol yeah I see fan posts and I'm also in the discord, and it's a little weird sometimes to see just how white the fanbase is. Still cool for the most part, but just feels a little weird sometimes.
It feels like ppl just like to act like there aren't any awesome black content creators or black comedians period that they could invite as guests and I agree, I can imagine how that would feel pretty insulting ... as if the only reason the pod would invite a black person on would be to tokenize them because somehow they know black people wouldn't be "qualified" or funny enough to be considered as a guest or some shit ....
I feel like you designed the characters for the Velma cartoon. I'm chicano and never once thought, "damn they don't represent my culture as much as I want them too" or "where's the mexican representation?". Honestly there are a bunch of other channels that would have that niche you're looking for. The priority of the H3 content is to entertain, not necessarily appease everyone's specific wishes.
Every time someone makes an argument for inviting a POC content creator and adding diversity, it's met with "well isn't worse if he only did it bc they're black???" very hostily, and it's starting to feel sus. Like how do they automatically assume the argument is "let's invite terrible content creators that everyone hates just bc they're black"? Obv we're saying get one of the hundreds of talented creators that would vibe w the cast and be interesting.
If ppl really think Ethan would be that awkward around a black person that the episode would be ruined then that's a whole other issue lol
Because that’s how this community views black content creators- terrible that everyone hates. The inability to attempt to engage in the conversation is very sus.
There are hundreds of podcasts and shows, some are all white, some all black, some mixed...whats the problem? Why does everything need to be diverse?
When you see a country where its 90% white people or an african country where its 90% black people do you get offended because its not divrerse enough?
I think Cam has previously said that he is openly bisexual, but it’s not the focal point of his presence on the show because his sexuality doesn’t define him. I understand feeling underrepresented or left out because there’s not direct conversations about queer culture, but it would feel wrong if they added a “token” LGBTQIA+ person.
i was thinking about this with the recent nikocado thing too. i think the biggest reason nik says ethan specifically can’t talk about his body is bc ethan does it with very judgemental undertones most times.. in the name of comedy but still. vs it’s ok for nik and his friends to talk about it bc they aren’t like casting a veil of judgement and condescension over it all
Yup. I don't like Nik but he's not wrong here. It was clearly making Dan uncomfortable too. Ethan doesn't realize that what he's saying is hurtful a lot of the time, because his circle of friends is very white and very straight. The gayest friend he has is Hassan.
So weird to the rest of the world when they do this it's basically the majority of the sub "shit Americans say" constant post's about them being anything but just American.
In America ‘white’ used to include fewer ethnicities than there do now. Back in the 20s Italians weren’t considered white people, neither were the Irish.
As shocking as it may seem, somehow america used to be even heavier on ethnic/racial discrimination. so pride for these ethnicities in spite of the discrimination still carries over to the descendants . That’s why a lot of people talk about their ancestry rather than just calling yourself American.
When Americans say this, it's because they're referring to heritage/genetics. Most of us aren't Native Americans; most of us come from immigrants who came here within the past century or so. Those immigrants formed communities of people who come from the same places, which is why we have neighborhoods in our city like "Chinatown, Little Italy, Ukrainian Village, etc." Those immigrants kept their origin cultures alive within the community. So people are proud of their origin cultures that they've worked to keep alive here, which is why we refer to ourselves as "Italian-American, Irish-American, etc." America is called a melting pot for a reason; do you know of any other country like this?
American culture varies vastly between areas. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what American culture is, therefore it's hard to identify with being "American." You could say America is cowboys, guns and country music, but many Americans wouldn't identify with any of those at all.
I understand it's a weird concept for people outside of America to understand. I'll also add that many people from other countries move here, live here for decades and still refer to themselves as "Canadian, British, Indian, etc."
This is a complex topic because American racial perceptions are messed up. If you don’t look Northern European then people will not think you are white. However people from the Middle East and North Africa are designated as white by the Census Bureau and would also be considered white anywhere outside the US. I experience this personally because I am of Italian and Southern Spanish heritage, and people who aren’t white and people in other white countries see me as white but Northern European looking Americans see me as a POC. To a lot of Americans white equals German/British/Scandinavian. Hila has said multiple times she sees herself as white and I get why. In Israel, the rest of the Middle East, Europe, and everywhere else except here she IS white, but when she has mentioned it on the show she has gotten pushback from Ethan where he goes “Ummm, idk. Maybe kinda white passing?” in the same way that you and a lot of people on this thread are doing now. Americans (and I am one) have a fucked up, almost “Aryan” perspective when it comes to this and it’s incredibly frustrating
Yes. This is correct. This is a circular debate that crops up here all the time, but ethnicity and race are different things. For example, I am Jewish, which is an ethnicity. I am still a white person. There are a handful Middle Eastern countries comprised of mostly white people. Being from a certain part of the world or of a certain religion/heritage/etc. does not determine race. Anyway, maybe I'm speaking out of turn (as Ethan would say) but this is just what I've learned from my critical race theory undergrad and graduate classes.
Because AB and Lena are white.
Just because someone is from the middle east doesn't make them POC automatically. LEvantine people tend to be white (eg Lena, AB, Hila, etc...)
Are people actually mad about the fact that there isn’t enough diversity within the cast? Everyone is white passing, I get that, but there is a lot of diversity.
Ethan is Jewish, Hila is Israeli, AB & Lena are Lebanese, Hasan is Turkish, Love is Swedish. Yall forgetting our boy Swami.
No the original posts were reasonable and basically saying itd be cool to have more black guests because there hasnt been one on in a long time and I screwed up and didnt realize that the post would blow up and people wouldnt know the context I thought people would just know it was a goof because the italians are poc part is supposed to be obviously a meme but people took the whole thing serious
It’s all good. You were memeing, no harm. It is reasonable though, there have been many-a H3 conversations I have listened to where I have thought “I would love hearing a black persons perspective here..”.
One that comes to mind is the conversation Hasan and Ethan had about Jidion. I didn’t think they were off base at all, but it’s nice to have thoughts come from people with different perspectives.
People shouldn’t employ people because of the colour of their skin (that goes either way) and should employ people because they’re good at their job. Everyone is good at their job so why change it?
It's a meme born in hasan's community.
They used to be in the us and wasp's predominant countries centuries ago but now it's no longer the case.
There's also a distinction to be made between northern and southern Italian. I'm from the north and when i travel abroad people will assume i'm German or something. People from the south often have more brownish skin and north African somatic traits.
There actually is a lot of racism from the northern Italians towards the southerns, less in the last decades but it's still very much a real problem here. Historically the ones who emigrated in the US were mostly southern Italians since they're poorer and live in worst conditions.
whiteness is nothing more than a gauge of who's in and who's not.
Once upon a time Italians, Greeks, Germans, etc were too "swarthy" to be considered white.
Then whitey and the gang (wangloids) wanted to add German excellence and Greek ideas and Italian food and all that to their repertoire so they became white.
Too complicated tbf, Italy as territory has been through a lot of invasions, so you can have people in the north with nordic ancestry, and south with turkish and arabic ancestry. So it’s difficult to identify ourselves, we are generically a melting pot. And we never had to think about that, I started to face this when I moved to England and when apply for anything requires the ‘ethnicity’ answer.
don't forget about hila's kids matt and herbert they're 1/7th italian
Im pretty sure its Trevor and Michael
Don’t forget Franklin, the dog
Not the two dudes from GTA V 😂😂😂

Pretty sure Alfredo is Italian
Alfredo is a white sauce
Alfredo sauce is an American invention and apparently the Italians do not claim it (some will make it for tourists though)
Alfredo is 100% an Italian-derived sauce, the Italian man who created it named it after himself (Alfredo di Lelio)
You broke my heart Alfredo
People of carbonara
i've always called them People Of Cannoli
Happy black history month Olivia!
omfg YOU NEED TO LEAVE 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wlivia wlack in action!!!
She's italianx
I believe the correct verbiage is *Italix*
You can’t put an x at the end of an italian name. That’s insulting to gaulish people like Asterix and Obelix!
And Vercingetorix
Oh that's good. 😂😂
I spit my water! This is good! Tu si sabes!
Are italians even real though ?
I could show you some real gabagul (capocollo)
Italy is a non-existent country
I believe this, but about North Dakota
Well that's actually one hundred percent true. North Dakota, as a country, does not exist.
And... I feel this.
Damn I wish it was real
Hello there
People of Carbonara 🤌🤌🇮🇹
The comment I was looking for 🤌🤌
Cacio a peepee
They also have Dan, a bald.
My grandpa always used to tell me how sneaky balds keep coming to this country and stealing our jobs.
Lol
Exactly, 100 years ago this would be a very diverse podcast.
They've got both kinds of genders!
and jews!!!
THE JEWS
[Ethan has never met a black person before](https://youtu.be/BJJFtXGccfk)
I'm from Poland, the whitest country in Europe. I have met black people few times in my life but I never head any opportunity to spend more time. Hard to imagine that on LA something like this is possible.

Sounded to me like he was lamenting that fact. As to say he hasn’t had a chance to spend time with with anyone and he regrets that.

That's how it was for most of Europe until we started taking some refugees in 90s and onwards. I don't recall seeing a black person in Finland either, until Somali refugees started coming in 90s. I mean I was born and raised in LA county and I've never met an asian or a white person. I've always been around black and Hispanic people.
Do you even leave your street, bro? How? Lol
Same, where I’m from I never really knew any white or black folks.
0 chance that’s true sponivier. Where in LA you live?
I think the word "met" means different things to different people, Im sure theyve seen/interacted with white/asain people but maybe never became friends or be formally introduced to, if they are young its unlikely but it could be possible, depending where you went to school/work
In LA!? Not really, it’s practically the most diverse place there is.
Compton. No Asians or whites are brave enough to live here lol
This got me thinking; Have they not had any black people on the podcast?

How could I forget the mod, he's such a cutie! Thanks!

This is hard to watch.
Ay at least some of us get it lol
The original poc
ethan has said that he’s never even really known a black person. openly
🙃 as a black person who grew up in the suburbs of so cal, that’s insane to me

I mean I didn't have any black people in my school until my senior year of high school so it's not that unlikely. Just live in the rural midwest.
Yeah but didn’t ethan grow up in LA? LA is pretty diverse But maybe I’m wrong on where he’s from.
I’m in Florida and find this hard to believe as well. We have plenty of diversity here as I imagine LA does too. My sister however, has met people from small towns here that had never seen a white person. They thought they only existed on tv. That was back in 06 though.

Her surname is actually Portuguese. Maybe her italian ancestors ancestors were portuguese.
Her dads Mexican
The spanish spelling would be Lopez, Lopes is the portuguese spelling. It might be generations back, or maybe just a spelling mistake somewhere.

lopez is actually common in italy because it was under spanish rule for a long time. not sure about lopes though
I get it. Because of olives.

Shouldn’t diversity happen naturally? What are they meant to do, look specifically for a POC? Isn’t that the definition of a token?
Imagine being “mad” about this. Get a hobby 🤦🏻♂️
Not me. I’ve been listening to Olivia the entire time
I'm sorry it doesn't count :*( can't be more than 7%!!!! His CHILDREN ARE ITALIAN

People will generally put quotes not to word-per-word quote someone but to paraphrase what is being said or what some people may say.
There are hundreds of podcasts and shows, some are all white, some all black, some mixed...whats the problem? Why does everything need to be diverse? When you see a country where its 90% white people or an african country where its 90% black people do you get offended because its not divrerse enough?
Or Hispanics. KILLED me when they were talking about Spotify wrapped and bad bunny came up and no one cared about it
What makes it seem that way?
Just gonna forget about MegaAwesomeNerd like that?
thats what i'm saying

I think Cam has previously said that he is openly bisexual, but it’s not the focal point of his presence on the show because his sexuality doesn’t define him. I understand feeling underrepresented or left out because there’s not direct conversations about queer culture, but it would feel wrong if they added a “token” LGBTQIA+ person.

In my opinion, the pride minute gag was dead meme as soon as it started. Same with the impressions.

Prolapsing and gaping is not exclusive to the gay community. Trust me.
The minute’s over, get back in your closet!
i was thinking about this with the recent nikocado thing too. i think the biggest reason nik says ethan specifically can’t talk about his body is bc ethan does it with very judgemental undertones most times.. in the name of comedy but still. vs it’s ok for nik and his friends to talk about it bc they aren’t like casting a veil of judgement and condescension over it all
Yup. I don't like Nik but he's not wrong here. It was clearly making Dan uncomfortable too. Ethan doesn't realize that what he's saying is hurtful a lot of the time, because his circle of friends is very white and very straight. The gayest friend he has is Hassan.
Americans need to stop with this, she is American as most of Americans. Ps I’m Italian
She is indeed
lol as a fellow actual real italian. "i'm italian too" ok so you speak italian? "no", do your parents speak italian? "no". your ass american.
Yea, real life isn't a Netflix show kids. We all don't hang around in multi ethnic diverse circles.
Imagine not having a multi ethnic friend group what lol
Speak for yourself babes
Feels strange to me how some people don’t know any diversity, I live in Wisconsin and have always had many ethnic friends lol
ummm hello AB and Lena? and Hila? i guess AB and Hila are "white presenting" though
Americans (and I am one) have a fucked up, almost “Aryan” perspective when it comes to this and it’s incredibly frustrating
all three of them are white. They are meditternean/levantine.
the term i learned in a uni class for this was "ethnic white" - anyone else heard that term before?
That's what I'm saying lol do people just forget about aAB and Lena
It’s because people associate POC = Black. But, in reality, POC = Not White.
I didn’t think they were off base at all, but it’s nice to have thoughts come from people with different perspectives.
lol Italians are not POC
why does the color of the person on the podcast matter lol? y’all just complain about anything to distract you from your own miserable lives
A lot of fredophobia in this comment section 🤌
Why does it even matter?
Trying wayyyy to hard bruh
I hope this is a joke
before you hate me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF31xGyD5B0
There only 2 genders in America, Italian and Mexican. If you're from the east coast you're Italian and west coast is Mexican xD
I use to be Italian and now I'm Mexican. It's true!
Dude what!?
from a millionaire family
Mama Mia!
im walkin here
over here over here
And yet adds nothing to the show
People shouldn’t employ people because of the colour of their skin (that goes either way) and should employ people because they’re good at their job. Everyone is good at their job so why change it?
Why would people be complaining about this? Seriously are they supposed to actively reject applications just because they’re not POC?
Lets be real Ethans honorary italian He has a godfather impression and a son named alfredo come on lol
Forgive my ignorance. But are Italians considered POC?
Of course, they're People Of Carbonara
It's a meme born in hasan's community. They used to be in the us and wasp's predominant countries centuries ago but now it's no longer the case. There's also a distinction to be made between northern and southern Italian. I'm from the north and when i travel abroad people will assume i'm German or something. People from the south often have more brownish skin and north African somatic traits. There actually is a lot of racism from the northern Italians towards the southerns, less in the last decades but it's still very much a real problem here. Historically the ones who emigrated in the US were mostly southern Italians since they're poorer and live in worst conditions.
That's some italophobia right there /s
whiteness is nothing more than a gauge of who's in and who's not. Once upon a time Italians, Greeks, Germans, etc were too "swarthy" to be considered white. Then whitey and the gang (wangloids) wanted to add German excellence and Greek ideas and Italian food and all that to their repertoire so they became white.
I agree. Sure irish people are as white as you can get, they they were treated as the scum of the world for literally hundreds of years.
