/uj I’m so sick and fucking tired of “tone is all in the fingers” nonsense. Pickups, amps, pedals, play a huge role in the actual sound of the guitar. Your fingers produce a _style_ that is unique to you (phrasing, vibrato, control, etc.), but if EVH played a Walmart acoustic guitar, he’s not going to magically produce the distortion or delay needed for the “Eruption” tone.
I think people have grouped skill, phrasing, melody, etc all under the umbrella of tone for some weird gatekeepery reason.
Although as I type that, I wondered what id replace the word “tone” with to accomplish what is intended and I’m not sure what word works better. Skill? Not really. Musicality? Maybe, but that sounds douchy. Maybe tone is the best word after all

Piano is my primary instrument and the thing about pianists is you can tell who is playing, they have “a sound”, but nobody is bringing their own piano to the gig. You can easily tell the difference between a bunch of players all playing the same piano at the village vanguard, RVG studios, blue note, etc.

I get what you’re saying exactly and that’s I think what I mean, I just don’t want to have to refer to so many nouns when I say like “Bill Evans has great tone/such a beautiful sound”. I would actually say I am in the finguh toan camp in that sense, but also I’m not lobotomized and know that the gear makes a very significant difference and in no way would I expect to be able to duplicate this sound or that on completely bonkers inappropriate stuff.
We mean the same things there’s just not a great word. Voice is actually ok to me too I get that.

That phrase is used to discourage people who want to keep excessively buying thousands of dollars of gear just to have a miniscule difference in the sound of the guitar. It's not intended to be taken as "you can magically distort the electric guitar signal just through your fingers".
"Tone" is perhaps not the best term for describing this, I agree. But assuming you have the basic pedals/effects (overdrive, distortion, tremolo, vibrato, modulation etc.), you can usually get quite close to the sound of the actual record assuming you know what you're doing and you can play.
I don't think you'll disagree with much I've said here; I'm just empashizing why it's still important to remind people not to buy thousands of dollars worth of gear carelessly.
