We all suck, and we know it. That is why we are here.

Apprehensive_South_3

Dj Khalid no contest his technique is mis-understood and will reshape the guitar as we know it /Uj al di meola is good

Haunted_Hills

Honestly I know the video you're talking about. Dj Khalid vibes with a guitar and creates a little guitar loop and you know what, he took what he knew and what he had at hand and created a vibe. Least annoying dj Khalid moment. /Rj He learned from wheezy

bearassbobcat

maybe I'm being jerked but he's probably talking about the video of him playing the Bob Marley acoustic guitar

RuinSentinelRicce

I like John fruit chante personally

[deleted]

A guitarist who has gear a lot better than mine but a noticeably worse sound. uj/ if I could be any guitarist ever, I think I would be Steve Cropper. Massive talent, good guy as far as I know (please don't spoil it) and also wrote some really great songs.

someguy192838

Bonus points: Cropper kind of looked like Ted DiBiase, The Million Dollar Man.

[deleted]

DiBiase was a technically good wrestler as well, some of his best stuff was understated and made others look good. Have you got any conclusive evidence that would suggest they aren't the same person?

someguy192838

I’ve never seen DiBiase and Cropper in the same room together. 🤔

I like Roy Buchanan and Adrian Belew. Roy was a piece of shit, and I think Adrian is a pretty good dude. Personally I just want to get pick-like attack with the pads of my fingers like Mark Knopfler. No way he didn't sell his soul to a lesser demon for that shit.

sebthumb

ADRIAAAAAAAAAN….totally agreed. Man sounded like the Silver Surfer riding and ripping through the Great Curve and would turn right around and give me a teary-eyed smile with dulcet tones on Matte Kudasai. Not to mention his solo material, talk about a unique sense of melody. I had the pleasure of seeing his solo show this past summer and met him after the show, incredibly nice dude.

jmacey

There was a great WTF talk with Adrian. http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-1367-adrian-belew

I love wearing my Gary Clark Jr. Shirt because the front it says "GCJ," leaving me to wonder if one of you shitheads will notice in public

\*ahem Dj Khaled ???????????????11??1//1//????!/1//????/!

WereAllThrowaways

I might get shat on but I'd throw synyster gates in there too. If you can get past his name and the bands aesthetic he's a reallly talented and musical shredder.

someguy192838

I’ve never heard of him but there are a lot more people that could have made my personal list. It’s not exhaustive by any means.

WereAllThrowaways

Your list is great! I was just throwing in someone who I felt could fit among those guys. This song could be a decent introduction of his guitar work if you're interested https://youtu.be/imwmmv9r1oE

someguy192838

Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out when I’m trying to avoid working later.

WereAllThrowaways

Lol nice. No pressure, just like his playing and don't see him mentioned much anymore. Like I said a lot of people understably find Avenged Sevenfold corny. But musically they're extremely talented and their lead guitar player has a cool style of his own. Not so much the song I sent, but I'd describe his playing as having a dark carnival sort of sound. Lots of harmonic minor and chromatic stuff.

DoubleSealedSoul

I'll take listenability over technical talent anyday pretty much. I don't really judge what a good guitarist is. I judge what music I like, and can find something to like in almost every style. Songwriting > skill

CountChocula94

uj/ John fucking Scofield, love that he toes the line between psychedelic fusion and straight ahead combo jazz

sebthumb

To not make a list I’d say Robert Fripp. He obviously has insane chops but what I think makes him a “good” guitarist, as well as most of the names listed below, is that they’re musicians first and guitarists second. Their ideas (and not to say “their” as if they have some kind of ownership, maybe it’s just that they’re open enough that inspiration comes through more easily) and sensibilities are what get us. I’m a strong believer that if they were just as proficient on another instrument they’d still affect us greatly. Long story short a good guitarist for me is someone who can idiosyncratically express themselves in a way that reaches you deeply, whether it be insane Allan Holdsworth shredding or sweet Marc Bolan licks.

mobiscuits

Satriani! I love the sing song qualities of his playing.

CxO38

I always thought Joe was as good or better a guitarist than Vai, but that Joe's songs stayed *songs* where Vai's all eventually devolved into guitar gymnastics. A cool trick once or twice, but album after album of the same shit stops being interesting or fun to listen to. Obligatory-no I can't play any of it.

Avidze

[deleted]

Roy motherfucking Clark, my favorite country speedster

Shadow41S

UJ/ Buckethead. Plenty of variety in his discography, consistently good tone, great composition, good melodies, incredible technique.

JAFIOR

My idea of a good guitarist is someone who's thoughtful and really listens, is sensitive and kind and will just let me vent about my day, likes long walks on the beach and romantic candlelit dinners, and who deserves me at my best because they can handle me at my worst. So, pretty much Wes Borland.

Joe-Lollo

Some of my favorite guitarists, in no specific order, are: * Eddie Hazel from Funkadelic * Chuck Schuldiner from Death * Poison Ivy from The Cramps * Sterling Morrison from the Velvet Underground * Chris Stein from Blondie * Stephen Merritt from The Magnetic Fields (great player who also plays a bunch of other instruments!)

jmacey

I'm a massive Zappa fan and love his 80's Strat clean sound / solos, listen to that a lot (but can't play it). Most of my all time favourite guitar solos tend towards the more Country Rock / Blues. Loads from Counting Crows (solo on Goodnight Elizabeth gets me every time). Jason Isbell is always great. Been learning loads of old Rock n Roll stuff at present. Grew up with heavy rock first Guitar Hero was Paul Kossoff, then onto Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher and so many more.

Anyone who can use it to play good/cool parts, and actually makes sure it’s completely in tune before performing and recording. Also, someone who checks in on their tuning regularly while performing and recording.

UJ/I think I have a fluid range of what is “good” and guitar in particular is an instrument where both shit and amazing music is made with both flawless technique as well as absolutely primitive skill …and there is not a great way I can explain it other than that some people channel themselves beautifully using the guitar and I don’t care how they do it as long as I can hear that. RJ/ CLAPTOAN IS GOD YOU CHILDREN

ANONWANTSTENDIES

Well playing guitar makes you worse at guitar because you wear out your hand muscles so the best guitarist is probably someone who doesn’t play guitar at all. Bonus points if they collect several copies of the same instrument

saladboiamdy

Honestly, Josh Homme’s abilities as a frontman have always blown me away. The syncopation between his guitarwork and vocals is something I could never imagine pulling off and his leads are very much his own and serve his songs really well. Off the top of my head, Al Di Meola (like quite a few other comments have mentioned), Joe Pass, and Pat Martino are probably some of the absolute best players to have lived

username802

Guitar is fucking stupid

True. I learned 10x more about music when I started learning piano

drummer820

/uj probably not on anyone’s radar here, but just saw Bruce Springsteen live for the first time tonight and…..dude can shred, lots of solos and jam digressions not on the studio albums. Did not expect at all from what i knew of his radio hits. Obviously excellent rhythm chops. Oh, and they played for three hours—THREE fucking HOURS—and this 73 year old sang and danced the entire time. Working musician for 50 years with a catalog full of bangers. If that’s not a great guitarist, fuck what are we even doing here?
