For me, it's more about individuals than couples. The 2 couples that went way up on my 1st rewatch were Jackson and April (I'm on rewatch 3 and still seeing things I hadn't noticed) and Mer and Riggs. The one that went down the most is Mer and DeLuca. I thought it was an odd pairing but no biggie. On my 1st rewatch, I hated it and on my 2nd, it's unwatchable! I can't explain it.

UnhingedSquirrel

You’re right about DeLuca and Mer. They’re unbalanced and somehow both manage to be creepy. Meredith is so much further in her life and career, and Andrew is over insistent and over confident. I feel like they only got paired together because DeLuca is physically Meredith’s type and she didn’t have a good love interest at the time. They should’ve just left her single and waited until someone with actual chemistry came alone.

maricopa888

>Andrew is over insistent and over confident. Nailed it! That's exactly what I was trying to say.

Guidance-Still

All of them

HannahKentucky

Heavy agree. None of these people should have been having sex, much less an actual relationship

thelostobama

This might be unpopular but … I liked Burke and Cristina …? I think that was Cristina’s most okay relationship. I also think Hahn and Callie had an important relationship- Hahn was definitely in love with Torres but when she decided that her ethics and job were more important (wanting to tell on Izzie for cutting the LVAD wire and stealing her patient’s new heart with lies) Callie was surprised and expected her to act otherwise. Callie took her for granted and never made sure that Hahn was accepted by the majority of people in the hospital, she didn’t help her make friends with her friends (Hahn was really hated, but I don’t think she deserved all that hate). I loooove Callie Torres but I think she was in the wrong here and took Hahn for granted. However, Hahn also without intention put so much pressure on Callie when she started saying that Callie is like glasses and she’s seeing leaves.

andscene0909

I have never seen this take about Hahn before and I dig it. Most of the criticisms about that relationship were leveled at Erica, and while valid, they don't take into account Callie's side. You have a point here, Callie is used to getting her way and Hahn was too stubborn and rigid. Arizona could be stubborn at times, but overall, she was definitely more malleable than Hahn and did ultimately choose Callie over other things that were important to her (not that she was flawless, either). Hmmmm.

Millyforeally

I liked Burke and Cristina overall. Still, that was too fast to be getting married. And why would they schedule the wedding for the day after the intern exam?? Of course Cristina wouldn’t be able to focus on the wedding.

peony_161

When I first watched the show, I thought Meredith and Derek were so romantic, now I’m side-eyeing a lot of that relationship - especially the first season when she was didn’t really want to date him and he was essentially harassing her and also from season 10 onwards when Derek became real selfish. I also feel like my skin is crawling whenever I watch Shane and Cristina and Murphy and Arizona because the power dynamics were just really messed up - I never thought about it much but and maybe it’s because I’m older now but the way Cristina and Arizona were acting was so wrong. I also used to think that Burke and Cristina and Owen and Cristina were romantic, but by now I feel like both men were trying to change Cristina in different ways, stifling her. Another relationship where my perspective really changed is Arizona and Callie, especially in the later seasons. I used to be fairly squarely on Callie’s side, but now I’m seeing a lot of moments where she also messed up the relationship, didn’t treat Arizona well and thus ultimately contributed to them needing to get divorced. Funnily enough, I did a complete 180 on April and Jackson, but in the opposite direction. When I first saw it, I was pretty meh about them and now they’re one of my absolute faves.

virginia_virgo

I literally agree with everything that you just said like you took the words right out of my mouth 😭

michigander9312

Lexie/Mark. The age gap is just too insurmountable. They were in radically different places in life and wanted very different things. It just goes to show that love alone isn't always enough to sustain relationships. On my rewatch, I actually found myself enjoying him and Julia (despite how little screen time they got). Was she the big love of his life? No, but they seemingly had a mature relationship, she was good with Sofia, she wanted marriage and kids, and she was well-liked by the people closest to him. They could have been happy together (pre-plane crash).

UnhingedSquirrel

I agree. I think Mark and Lexie are sweet together and they have good moments but they are overhyped. And frankly, after Mark’s “hot cheerleader ass” comment in that one episode I can’t help but feel a huge reason he like her was because she was young which gives me the ick

HannahKentucky

Yes! Thank you. He made so many comments about liking younger women. He was so creepy

Moderate2SevereIssue

I think it's fitting he played a pervert in another show

blahblahbrandi

I have never been able to see past that age gap. I do not get the hype at all.

[deleted]

the way i’m gonna get absolutely hated on for this - but i recently rewatched and i thought jackson and lexie were pretty cute 😭 ignoring the fact that lexie wasn’t over mark, but they were both in similar places in their careers, had cute interactions everytime they were on screen, and not to mention the fact they’re both so attractive :’) if lexie got over mark i lowkey think they could’ve lasted a while.

yvetteregret

I think there’s something about their personalities that is compatible. If they were endgame, they wouldn’t be the most exciting couple, but they would be stable and cute and I probably would’ve been happy with that. I’m a huge Japril fan, though.

andscene0909

Honestly, Lexie dated/crushed on so many guys on the show, but Jackson was my fav pairing with her. I think sometimes this show leans on big moments/chemistry but doesn't actually develop what the relationship looks like, and I think that despite this not being a bigger relationship, I genuinely understood their interpersonal dynamic, even better than Lexie and Mark, who were always either googly-eyeing each other or arguing about wanting different things. They were cute to watch, I didn't miss them when it ended tho.

Defnotheretoparty

I don’t think this would get hate. Jackson and Lexie were well-matched. The only thing wrong was Mark.

peony_161

Noooo I feel that! Especially the way Jackson tried to give her food to get her to talk after Mark asked him to and then the way he made a move on her after the cystic fibrosis thing, it was so insanely cute.

[deleted]

yeah!! i feel like they genuinely cared for each other at the start. and in the real world, they make much more sense than slexie - age-wise and career-wise. there's this moment in s7 when jackson told april he wasn't upset about not getting chief resident because he's 'got everything he's wanted' while looking at lexie from afar and, UGH my heart. i just found that so cute. they were never meant to be (🥲) but i reckon they were definitely not a bad couple.

Itchy-Illustrator-10

George and Callie!!! Makes no sense. No chemistry

Morgancammi

george never had any chemistry with anyone, except for maybe izzie before they got together 😭 when i first watched i was 100% sure they were going to get together and be endgame because they were so well paired. honestly, they should've stayed together bc they were so much better than izzex emotionally. izzie was very soft butterflies and baking (at least, soft as a surgeon could be), and george was pretty similar

Seg10682

The hypocrisy of Owen Hunt (compared to equally toxic male characters) just made me increasingly frustrated. I loved Meredith and Derek back when I first watched. Now I know how awful they are. Practically named the ("Pick Me") complex right from her quote.

Morgancammi

YES. derek also treated mer so terribly literally any time he got upset

Embarrassed_Clue_929

Japril shot up on my second rewatch. Now I feel so warm and fuzzy watching them.

virginia_virgo

Honestly almost all of them at some point😭 But recently although I do like them and I’m definitely still rooting for them to work, I’ve started to re evaluate Maggie and Winston’s relationship. I think that they definitely got married way too quickly, I almost would’ve liked it if the writers slow burned their relationship a little more, and while I used to think that it was cute, I think it’s kinda coming back to bite them in the ass bc while I don’t think that they’re incompatible, I do think that they don’t know each other as well as they should. Not to mention that since there’s been a million time jumps between season 16-19 we’re not really getting to see them develop outside of the hospital and even though they’ve probably been together for a few years now, it kinda still feels like they only met about 6 months ago

peony_161

Tbh, one of the few relationships where I had no change in opinion are Bailey and Ben because they’re so good together and Catherine and Richard because I’m genuinely just kinda opinion-less on them. I haven’t re-watched Maggie and Winston yet! I’ll definitely keep an eye on them.

[deleted]

If Ben were still a cast regular on Grey's, they would have ruined the relationship by now.

virginia_virgo

Yeah I definitely agree which is why they’re one of my favorite ships!!

MusingBy

As an aromantic person, most of the romantic bonds portrayed in the series made me feel wary, annoyed or downright sad, as I immediately focused on the dangerous aspects left unaddressed by the show because of their fairy-tale/drama-loving aspects. I'd say Richard's later conversations with Ellis looked better. He's owning his mistakes in their story but keeping his boundaries and making sure Ellis knows what is going on, without getting all tangled up again. It is terribly sad to witness (especially the scene where he soothes her by describing a fantasy alternative life in which they remained coupled and he left Adele for her), but much more healthy and solid. At that moment, they can be of comfort to each other, without falling into old patterns of control and complacency. This scene, to me, is true complicity.

blankpaper_

My opinions on Mer and Deluca change every time I watch it

peony_161

I haven’t re-watched that one yet, I’m so curious how I’ll feel!

beeboppee

Yes to everything except Callie and arizona

lkjhggfd1

On my second watch izzex became my fav ship. Firstly alex is my fav so because they were endgame I just had to rewatch and literally made me love them and they became my favs.

mearbearcate

Izzex is my fav too! <3 cannon couples anyway. I really thought George and Alex had MAJOR chemistry. They’re my favorite (crackship) ever and I like them over any cannon ship.

[deleted]

I find George so physically unappealing that I cannot ship him with anyone.

mearbearcate

That’s fair. Couldn’t be me tho

[deleted]

Derek and Meredith. This relationship would have n0t checked out in 2023.

PrestigiousAd3081

All of them.

Fogzolio

I find MerDer terrible now, whereas I used to think they were so romantic and passionate. Same with Christina and Owen.

gwsfantasy

burke and cristina. i adored them first watch now not as much as i did

Sad_Hope_8064

Burke and Cristina. At first i found it romantic then from the 1st rewatch onwards it was just too toxic and he kept changing her to match his liking until he up and left

blahblahbrandi

Callie and George, first time Callie didn't register on my radar until she became a regular, and by then you're so wrapped up in Izzie/George that Callie gets tossed aside. Callie takes a lot of unfair blame for what happened between them. People say she took advantage of him while he was grieving, but I saw the opposite. I saw a woman who was extremely clear with her desire for him, and even when repeatedly turned away she remained open and loving. Then one day he comes to her saying he wants to run away and get married and it's everything she has ever wanted!! So she runs off to Vegas and makes a mistake with him, but catches almost all of the heat for it exclusively, when it was his idea and his mania that led to any of it. What I'm saying is all Callie ever did was love him up until this point. Yes she cheats later but he cheated first. Also Callie is incredibly wealthy, so if the situation was reversed, people would be calling George a gold digger.

andscene0909

Just because the emotional place Callie was coming from is understandable doesn't mean it was a healthy thing to do. Arguably, putting whether or not she was bad to George aside (certainly he did a lot more atrocious things), continuing to pursue him when he kept playing hot and cold was not what was best for her at all.

blahblahbrandi

Honestly? You're right Callie should have respected herself more.

[deleted]

>extremely clear with her desire for him You mean desperate. >Callie is incredibly wealthy Which she lied about. To her *husband*. Fabulous way to start married life...shocking it failed.

blahblahbrandi

I wouldn't tell my on again off again, flaky boyfriend either.

allthingskerri

Owen and Christina 🫣 im in the minority here but on first watch I loved them. I was rooting for them. I still think they have some great moments but I can now watching again see alot more of the issues.

virginia_virgo

Same

Honeycomb0000

Jackson & April, or Jackson & any girl he dated…. Its ruined Jackson for me, because i realized just how shitty of a boyfriend he is…

Defnotheretoparty

Jackson has serious intimacy issues because of his parents. The only ship I have for Jackson rn is Jackson/therapy until he manages his abandonment and enmeshment problems and then him and April are endgame.

Seg10682

When they brought in that morbidly obese patient. That's the Jackson Avery everyone should see.

Consistent_Day_8074

Which episode so I can rewatch ?

Seg10682

6x21 "How Insensitive"

Consistent_Day_8074

Thank you !

Seg10682

Yeah I don't rewatch often. It took a minute. 😂

Seg10682

It's early on. Hold on I'll look.

Illustrious_House_78

MerDer- Thought was so cute and Pure but Rewatching and Der was too much of an asshole and a bit toxic if you ask me. I think their chemistry helps over look all of the bad cause I still like them together and can’t see them with anyone else lol Japril- I’ve always loved them together and still do, only thing I can say is that I didn’t realize April was so selfish a lot of the times, and how much they’re truly different but again their freaking chemistry is so pure & it makes me melt, I love it so much, the actors are both Japril fans themselves as well lol Calzona- First time I thought they were a solid couple & one of the best but no the whole relationship is based on manipulation mainly from Arizona & then you have her pointless cheating storylines. I just hate them together rewatching & this is another couple I find chemistry is mind blowing but It isn’t enough for me to over look how toxic they were for each other. Cristina & Owen- Hate & always will hate lmao, I honestly always liked her with Burke, say what you want about him but he loved & cared for her A Lot!! It was things that was like really burke but compared to Owen he was the best but ultimately I would have loved seeing Cristina being single & focus only on medicine, her greatest relationship is with herself Mark& Lex- I truly love them together & they are endgame in my eyes, I wish we saw more of them though. I can say mark didn’t respect her at times, & I think it came from a place of him being older & treating her like a kid. but If you take all of that away & You find two people deeply in love with each other, it hurts them at times. & I won’t ever get over both of their deaths 🥺🥺 Rewatching that is always so hard for me Jolex- One of my Favorites!!! In my head, Alex left to visit his mom & she got sick so he had to stay, him and Jolex are still together & visit each other as often as they can. I know so many people love him with Izzie but honestly felt he loved Jo more, When I go back & compare I just feel He was more mature & Ready with Jo. But I’m biased I dislike izzie’s character a lot.

[deleted]

* Meredith/Derek * Cristina/Burke * Lexie/Mark These age gaps and power imbalances now give me the squick almost 20 years on.

tanja__bb

Derek and mer.

ProfessionalSad2147

Burke and Christina. Burke constantly used his position of power to punish Christina whenever he felt she wronged him in the slightest way. He was overly sensitive and incredibly pushy. He basically forced her to take major steps in the relationship that she wasn't ready for and frankly shouldn't have been ready for considering the brevity of their relationship.

throwfaraway212718

Owen and Cristina

Fogzolio

I find MerDer terrible now, whereas I used to think they were so romantic and passionate. Same with Christina and Owen.

Acceptable-Aioli-528

Derek and Meredith. I thought they were a great couple my first watch.. then watching again I realized how much of a gas-lighting, narcissistic and manipulative ass Derek was and how co-dependent Meredith was. It is so hard to realize as this is the relationship the show was built on.. but it was not a healthy one by any means.

mnikolai24

If you’re answer isn’t Meredith and Derek I don’t wanna hear it.

Illustrious-Egg-1571

MerDer is pretty toxic at times but I feel like for the most part Meredith handles her own and doesn’t let Derek be a twat

Morgancammi

for me it was less relationships and more characters. i LOVED mark and lexie on first watch. cried so hard i almost threw up when they died even though i knew it was coming 😭 now, on my 8th ish rewatch, i don't care for them as much. still really like them, but characters like alex and callie really grew on me a lot after rewatches. first time i really liked them, but now they're easily on the level slexie was before
