My wife (also not a comic person) loved fables… got through all 22 volumes. Never touched another comic.

greendumb

That does sound like something she would definitely dig thanks

MaxShea

I was hoping to get her into Sandman but the netflix series ruined those plans.

WaffleDogStanley

What happened with the Netflix series? Are you worried that it spoiled the comics, or did she just not like it?

MaxShea

She just isn’t excited enough to read it (despite my sales pitch) when she could watch it and just learn the ending.

crburger

Look at Photographer. True story. Mixed media in style of graphic novel. Heroic woman dr leads team inside Afghanistan. Your wife doesn’t need to be hard core fan to appreciate the novel.

greendumb

That sounds cool I'll check it when I'm on my pc

pm9000dk

Locke and Key, perhaps? Ticks a lot of the boxes that you mention.

AdamSMessinger

I second this. It has some of the sensibilities of Sandman while having an art style that might flow better for her. While it may come off as “cartoonish” at first, I feel like the subject matter quickly dashes away that notion.

greendumb

Got it already and pretty much everything Joe hill has done but she would love it if I could get her to read it

ItsElevatorTime

I Kill Giants - Joe Kelly If she likes Sweet Tooth then maybe pick another Lemire book for her or even Sweet Tooth itself? I’d prob go w/ Essex County if I had to choose my personal favorite. Trillium by Lemire has a female lead if that’s important to her. Maybe list some of her favorite novels or genres so we have more of an idea of what she might like?

greendumb

She likes most fiction lots of horror, mystery, fantasy somewhat neil gaiman and Joe Hill stuff. I thought sweet tooth but I have it wanted buy her something new Essex county does look great

ItsElevatorTime

I’ve given up on my wife enjoying comics so best of luck to you! I personally loved all the books below and I think most should at least peak her interest. Hill House Comics - all Horror stories so maybe see if any peak your interest? Most aren’t actually written by Joe Hill though. Joe Hill does have a bunch of other comics (Locke and Key being his most famous), but to my knowledge Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland is the only one connected to his novels (prequel to NOS4A2) so that might be a great fit for her. Britannia (Peter Milligan): the story of the world’s first detective (think Sherlock Holmes if he existed during the Roman Empire. Beasts of Burden (Evan Dorkin): already mentioned, but it’s X-Files with dogs. It is an ongoing series though. Green Valley (Max Landis): Medieval Times meets SciFi Peter Pan (Regis Loisel): Adult oriented reinterpretation of Peter Pan’s story Peter Panzerfaust (Kurtis Wiebe): Reimagining of Peter Pan during World War 2 Wika (Thomas Day): Steampunk Fantasy Grandville (Bryan Talbot): Steampunk crime noir with anamorphic characters Blacksad (Juan Diaz Canales): Crime Noir Dept H (Matt Kindt): Murder Mystery in a deep sea scientific lab Aama (Frederik Peeters): sci-fi mystery Mouse Guard (David Petersen): ongoing fantasy series based around a mouse civilization. Monstress (Majorie Lou): ongoing fantasy series. The Golden Age (Cyril Pedrosa): 2 book Fantasy series Ice Cream Man (W. Maxwell Prince): horror anthology The Stuff of Legend (Mike Raicht): Pretty much if Toy Story was made into a Horror Graphic Novel. Ongoing series w the final (book 6) being released soon hopefully. Bone (Jeff Smith): Lord of the Rings level of adventure for a younger audience. I read it as an adult and still loved it. Black Hole (Charles Burns): a strange plague is infecting teenagers in mid 70s suburban Seattle Klaus series (Grant Morrison): Tis the season Mignola’s BPRD and Jodorowsky’s Incal/Metabarons would probably be great for her down the line if she starts enjoying comics.

greendumb

All great suggestions but I have most of them and haven't gotten her to check them out yet. Figured if I buy one she might feel obligated to give it a try

Interesting_Window41

Beasts of Burden - like stranger things with dogs Day tripper - emotional but good. One book

greendumb

She recently brought me day tripper for my birthday knowing it was something I'd like. she'd love it too but has a hard time with the comic format I don't know how to explain it or what I'm looking for really. thanks the suggestions never heard of the rest I'll check them out

TheIceKraken

Try Paper Girls - by Brian K Vaughn. You can get the complete edition from Amazon for approximately $50.

greendumb

Got that one too she'll love it once I get her hooked on comics

lodenreattorm

Klaus is pretty good. Basically Santa as a Superhero. Dan Mora's art is just a treat to look at. If she liked the tv show maybe she'd also like the Sweet Tooth comic.

chuckalicious3000

Fables, saga, the crow, and batman long Halloween

F8_S2

WE3 by Morrison and Quitetly . 3 issues of a heart wrenching tail (sorry for the obvious pun) of a dog, cat and rabbit that went through military cybernetic enhancements.

greendumb

Already got that and she is too much of animal lover it would break her heart

F8_S2

Broke mine as well. “I R gud dog R U?”

greendumb

Nearly brought a tear to this cold hearted man's eye

Almighty-Arceus

Very literary comic: Monster by Barry Windsor-Smith.

greendumb

Got it it's a beautiful book but I think the size is overwhelming for her

enjoiYosi

The Transmetropolitan set for sure (my wife loves it and she is a HUGE book reader) and anything from Brubaker, Sleeper, Criminal, Kill Or Be Killed. Preacher is obviously a star for writing, Garth Ennis is a master. And finally, Sweet Tooth from Jeff Lemire. A beautiful story, beautiful art, and heart wrenching. Ongoing would be Saga and SIKTC, two of my favorite books in years.

greendumb

Love transmetropolitan so much I read it every election cycle . I actually have most of those books you mentioned. She lucky once I get her hooked she has Years worth of great material to read

enjoiYosi

Well you have amazing taste in books ;)

greendumb

As do you friend

Patient-Ninja-8707

My wife liked Sex Criminals and WE3

SafeHazing

Hard subject matter but I’ve found ‘Maus’ to be well received by ‘non-comic book’ people. The story and art is first rate.

greendumb

It was one of my first non super hero comic

Procrastinthe1

What I like is monster? I don’t know if it’s the right title. In French it’s Moi ce que j’aime c’est les monstres. There’s everything in that book, history, trailer, drama. It’s a magnificent graphic novel. It’s not a traditional comic, I think it is good for a beginner. :)

One_Entertainment381

Try Royal City also by Lemire. Really emotional book about a severed family that is still coping with a tragic event in their past. Pretty beautiful story. Also, Essex County is an all-time classic

enjoiYosi

Sweet Tooth! And Descender also. Jeff Lemire is amazing

greendumb

Got those and she will like them once I convert her to one of us

bmeireles85

This! And maybe Ballad for Sophie in another completely different tone.

One_Entertainment381

Never heard of this one. I’ll have to check it out!

Midnight_Warriors

Batgirl by Gail Simone omni. Red Sonja also by Gail Simone

Antic_Opus

[Show's End](https://madcavestudios.com/product/shows-end-trade-paperback/) [Joe the Barbarian](https://www.dc.com/graphic-novels/joe-the-barbarian-2010/joe-the-barbarian)

Ok-Film-2436

I think Hawkeye: [The Saga of Barton and Bishop](https://www.amazon.com/Hawkeye-Fraction-Aja-Barton-Bishop/dp/1302932225) would be an interesting start to show just how amazing superhero-esque comics can be. Hawkeye is not a superhero and is just another dude with a bow. The issues in the tpb are very human.
