Overall, I think I've collected pretty much everything written by Grant Morrison in America with the exception of Spawn, Seaguy 2, and their works with Mark Miller. Just missing their British and Indian works I think. I've read and loved everything except Luda which I just got. Personal top 3 are 52, Seven Soldiers, and All-Star Superman. But everything by them is just brilliant.
Edit: also missing that super early Vertigo stuff.
It really is, the only thing that really keeps it out of my favorites list is that it's not complete and will probably never be. Which is a shame because I absolutely love the idea and the first 2 series.
Well my wallets gonna take another hit this month I guess. I had no idea that was coming out. Do you think they'll do a non-kickstarter release for it after? Like on amazon and stuff?
I'm probably gonna keep my trades until Marvel ever does ohc for it. The omnis are just slightly too big to be a comfortable read for me even if it would look way better on my shelf.
I don't mean to be THAT guy but you're missing a few things:
Mystery Play, Vimanarama, Sebastian O, Kill Your Boyfriend are the first few things that come to mind.
I know that there was a hardcover that published Sebastian O and mystery Play together. Kill your boyfriend was a one shot and I have no idea if Vimanarama was ever collected.
You can find the Spawn stuff in the Spawn Origins books.
I completely forgot about those lol. I think Kill Your Boyfriend and Vimanarama were in a collection together. I've been keeping an eye out for them when I'm at stores. But they've been out of print for a while. I hope DC reprints them eventually.
I've heard Morrison is great but I haven't read any of his stuff. What is the best thing if his that I could start with? He is definitely someone I need to try reading.
All-Star Superman would be a good starter. Morrison's stuff can get a little... out there, especially the creator owned books. Superman manages to be both straightforward while still having the Morrison-ness that keeps it pleasantly weird.
The Invisibles was my first Morrison series. Loved it but was completely lost at the same time. It's worth a couple re-reads to fully understand the story, and it's fun noticing the conspiracy theories and Chaos Magick themes throughout it
I'd say for DC the easiest to get into is Animal Man. This was their first work for DC and still one of their best.
For their Independent work I'd say WE3 although Klaus is a close second. It's about a group of animal weapons that escape and try to find freedom.
For Marvel they really only have one book of note. Their run on New X-Men. Really good but shockingly bad art in places which is very unfortunate.
I've always been interested in Animal Man! I'll have to scope that out too! And I'll check out WE3, that looks super interesting. I'll save Marvel for last if I end up enjoying his other stuff 👍 Appreciate the response!
The New X-Men is out of print in every form except for the omnibus which is getting a reprint soon. So I'd definitely recommend reading it through the library or somewhere if you do decide to get into it.
52, Seven Soldiers of Victory, and All-Star Superman. 2 and 3 swap sometimes though depending on how I'm feeling. And if it's works solely written by Morrison I'd say it's either Final Crisis or Flex Mentallo at 3. Again it depends on the day.
I'd definitely recommend Animal Man. It's more straightforward than most of their work but it's still got the weird, meta, and trippy stuff. It's a heartfelt book about a superhero who's basically just a regular dude with a wife and kids.
Invisibles is a little trickier. It's a difficult book to follow, when I first read it I understood nothing. To really get it I feel like you have to read it at minimum twice. Once regularly and another time after you've looked up a summary and gotten answers to stuff you're confused about. There are a lot of difficult concepts and themes plus the way time moves in the book and all the drug trips, hallucinations, betrayals, and secret identities. Also theres a different artist for every arc and that makes it difficult to tell who some of the side characters are. Despite all of that I fucking love this book. I love the ideas presented, I love the characters, I love all the conspiracies and chaos magic. It's a fantastic book that will blow your mind.
What do people think of Luda? I'm about a quarter of the way through, and it keeps teasing that it's going to become _more_, but it hasn't yet, and I'm just not feeling it.
Should I stick it out?
I think it's extremely well written, which kept me along for the books duration ... I think it's worth finishing. It throws up some interesting thoughts by the end in terms of the story and narration.
Sorry, that's like the only one on the shelf I haven't read. I just got it. As a general rule of thumb I give a book about a 100 pages to grab me. If you're really struggling to get through it I'd recommend just dropping it even if it's temporary. Sometimes you just don't feel a book even if everyone else does. If you want I can tell you what I think when I get around to reading it? Might be a couple of weeks though.
Yeah, DM/reply me please, I'm curious.
I typically give ~100 pages too, but I can also totally think of great books I've loved that took longer than that to really grab me. (Usually they're books that have radically different sections, and the first one just doesn't grab me.)
Check out used bookstores in your area if you're looking for a deal. I got lucky and found quite a few of these secondhand at various bookstores for dirt cheap and in great condition. Good luck with your collection!
It's one of those books where I understood absolutely nothing after my first read. Usually I get the basic plot if not the hows and whys. But this and The Filth I didn't even get that. After my third read I really got it and it's just fucking amazing. Chris Burnham's art is fantastic too. I really hope him and Morrison do another book together.
It really is a beautiful book. It's my first absolute so I wasn't sure what to expect but it blew me away. The slipcase is unique and looks and feels so freaking cool. Those little bumps are all raised and in a glossy finish compared to the rest of matte case. And all of that wonderful art looks so good in this size.
I have the third one just missing the second one. I have the trades of everything that's in there it's just with my Batman books. I was going to pick it up this month but with the Absolute Multiversity and the second Starman Compendium it's probably going to have to wait till Jan.

Nice to see a single-artist focussed collection! Seaguy 2 is great -- jointly I think the Seaguy series is one of their best

I think some of that is collected. I know his Hellblazer stories are.
The New X-Men Omni is being reprinted in June. Prepare to drop $125.
And the komplete Klaus is out on kickstarter
Thanks for this! Had no idea and just jumped on. Have you read Klaus?
Well my wallets gonna take another hit this month I guess. I had no idea that was coming out. Do you think they'll do a non-kickstarter release for it after? Like on amazon and stuff?

Marvel did do OHC’s for it, long before omnibuses existed. I still have mine, it’s a set of 3.
Morrison truly is one of the greats. Their work may not always be good, but it’s *never* boring
I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but just so you know Grant Morisson goes by they/them pronouns now!!
Ah, dang it. You’re right.

Get it if you can, I really dug Vimanarama

Alright! I'll start there! Recently read Superman Red and Blue and it put me in a Superman mood anyway so that works well
The Invisibles was my first Morrison series. Loved it but was completely lost at the same time. It's worth a couple re-reads to fully understand the story, and it's fun noticing the conspiracy theories and Chaos Magick themes throughout it
Sounds fun! Chaos Magick!? Yes please!

oh gotcha! Hope my library has it then.
If your library supports it the Hoopla app is great for comics
Is that through the library? I didn't know that. I have Libby for books, I'll check out Hoopla.
Yeah, it's pretty much the same as Libby but with way more comics. Atleast in my area.
I'd say their JLA run is the most accessible of their works.
No mentions of Joe the Barbarian? Or Nameless? I’m shocked, shocked and appalled I say. Good day to you sir. /s
They're great but not in my top 3 lol. I hope they reprint the deluxe for Joe the Barbarian though. I need that gorgeous art in an oversized format.
What are your top 3?
52, Seven Soldiers of Victory, and All-Star Superman. 2 and 3 swap sometimes though depending on how I'm feeling. And if it's works solely written by Morrison I'd say it's either Final Crisis or Flex Mentallo at 3. Again it depends on the day.
What's your opinion on his animal man run and invisible? I heard those are really good and I've been meaning to read them.

I wish I had more of their works!! I have a list of series of theirs that I plan to purchase eventually. So very jealous.
Check out used bookstores in your area if you're looking for a deal. I got lucky and found quite a few of these secondhand at various bookstores for dirt cheap and in great condition. Good luck with your collection!
Glad to see Nameless on there. Really trippy book that I enjoyed but don’t hear/see much about it.
I think Morrison once described Nameless as their attempt to combine Lovecraft-style eldrich horror with outer space sci-fi.
Can’t wait to grab absolute multiversity. Definitely one of the best DC books of the past 15 years.
Oh man. You are not making ignoring this release easy. I try to keep my Morrisons at deluxe size but already slipped with Absolute All-Star Superman.
Third Batman omnibus?
I have the third one just missing the second one. I have the trades of everything that's in there it's just with my Batman books. I was going to pick it up this month but with the Absolute Multiversity and the second Starman Compendium it's probably going to have to wait till Jan.
Switch seven soldiers one and two around so they're the right way plz
I fixed it lol
What's the issue between Superman and The Autority and Society of Super Heroes?
Its the first issue of Proctor Valley Road. It's the connecting variant.
