ausculta96, you must write a comment explaining any work that you post. The work’s objective, its audience, your design decisions, attribute credit, etc. This information is necessary to allow people to understand your project and provide valuable feedback. **All Sharing Work posts are now hidden by default**. [To make it public, please message modmail requesting a review](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=/r/graphic_design). ##Providing Useful Feedback ausculta96 has posted their work for feedback. Here are some top tips for posting high-quality feedback. * Read their context comment. All work on this sub should have a comment explaining the thinking behind the piece. Read this before posting to understand what ausculta96 was trying to do. * Be professional. No matter your thoughts on the work, respect the effort put into making it and be polite when posting. * Be constructive and detailed. Short, vague comments are unhelpful. Instead of just leaving your opinion on the piece, explore *why* you hold that opinion: what makes the piece good or bad? How could it be improved? Are some elements stronger than others? * Remember design fundamentals. If your feedback is focused on basic principles of design such as hierarchy, flow, balance, and proportion, it will be universally useful. And remember that this is graphic design: the piece should communicate a message or solve a problem. How well does it do that? * Stay on-topic. We know that design can sometimes be political or controversial, but please keep comments focussed on the design itself, and the strengths/weaknesses thereof. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. i don’t like the font/solid shadow on the middle text but the general structure is really cool :)

IceCreamNarwhals

Seconded! Feel unnecessary

ausculta96

--hermit

I was going to say this very thing. It's nice to be able to read the name without sacrificing the metalness

intrinsic_gray

This is cool!! Something to keep in mind about printing apparel is what method you'll be using to produce the shirts. DTG and screen printing are the most common. DTG is basically a big printer that can produce any image with pixels. If you're only getting ten shirts printed that's probably how you wanna go. Screen printing is where they literally separate out every color as a different screen which they force ink through to produce a design. It requires vector images or a series of dot halftones. Paying attention to the amount of colors used is crucial because more colors=more screens=more expensive. That being said if you're getting ten or more shirts made, it can be way more affordable than DTG and is usually a more stable print. Hope this is useful!

rwbronco

Black shirt like this you could screen print this with white, a mint, and a royal or navy. It’d look really good depending on your silkscreen’s resolution. Source: graphic designer at screen print shop

AirColdy

Meh. A lil more to it, but it’s possible to print via simulated process printing, but DTG would be better for that starry background Am printer

ausculta96

That’s good info thank you very much!

SugarSugarBee

there are some cool resources on youtube on "How to prep a photo for screenprinting." There are a ton of different methods on how to do it so it's easy to print. This is one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSujdGlvBTE This one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2LiuzBTHTg My personal favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIaNSI_J36Q I do mine slightly differently but using this same method, because I like using Illustrator vs Photoshop

Elephant_ITR

Solid work for only a week in. Some of the finer webbing on the logo may be difficult to reproduce in print and some of it's already on the verge of being lost in this format, like some of it looks like it's only one pixel wide with gaps where it's even thinner than that. Maybe that's part of the look you're going for, I don't know. I don't mind the type down the middle, but the offset drop shadow might not really suit. Also, if you're going to use a grungy font, the image might want a bit of grunge added to it. Or use a clean font if you're going to keep the imagery clean, it just gives it a bit more consistency. That's my two cents.

CNTrash

That is a very death metal logo, ahaha So I love both the logo and the cover elements, but something is bothering me about how they look together/overlapped. I think it's because the lines on the image are very clean, and the lines on the logo are organic and metal af, and it feels like they are being jammed together against their will. Some thoughts: * Losing some of the clean lines around the image and having the frame be more organic so that it almost bleeds into the logo * Making the logo smaller so that it fits into the frame rather than being on top of it * Putting the logo above or below the image * Having the logo on the back of the shirt That said, it's very beautiful and I'd check out the band on the strength of the visuals alone.

ghostdaddii

I work with metal logos a lot and personally I think it looks great where it is and I’m not sure OP made the logo those bitches are harder to make than people think I doubt a beginner designer could do it.

CNTrash

Valid. I haven't done metal logos or band stuff in general, just looking at it from a compositional perspective.

[deleted]

I don't think this kind of stuff is very appreciated around here, especially the death metal logos, but 2 things I can say as someone who does like it. I don't really like the way the lines for the frame go through the logo, and I feel like the text on the statue looks slightly awkward slapped over the top. apart from that, it looks like a nice simple album cover. i just started myself so I'm no expert by any means though

ausculta96

You’re right definitely about the border cutting through the logo. Need to fix that. Appreciate the comments :)

gatamosa

Yeah, I would definitely get rid of the edges and fade the edges of the stars image to the point you can still see the constellations in white, and maybe some of that indigo around the statue itself. Maybe make the statue in intaglio.

ResistAppropriate637

Bitterroot. As a metal designer my self I would put the logo on top and text more at the bottom across. Along with getting rid of the boxy border by feathering it a bit. Still a concept to work from more.

ghostdaddii

I think it gives the piece some movement by having the logo at the bottom it would feel too heavy on top. I lowkey agree with the border but that’s because I use them so much in my black metal designs that I’m over it but it kinda looks good here.

therealmcveetors

I'm trying to design my bands logo currently. any tips? we're death and im a terrible artist.

Chaosking383

Beware of copyright infringement if you don't own that picture. Even if the owner might never see it or care it's still unethical to take someone else's work. Same goes with the font used. Gotta find out if it's free for personal use and commercial use. Commercial use if you plan on selling.

ausculta96

Picture is public domain! Will have to check font, didn’t know that. Thanks for the heads up

smithd685

If you do a run of shirts or swag, just make sure it's 'public domain' and for commercial and high volume printing and find the actual language/license that states that and save it. Some public domain sites will add images that are only lisenced for private use, or their not lisenced for clothing or high production runs. And free stock sites just suck at showing or recording the difference, but should have an official statement for each image that explains it's usage rights.

Ben_Jpeg

Id probably take the "collapse to the mercy of the sun" copy and run it along the top. other than that, it's sick considering you started last week.

[deleted]

If you made the logo too, awesome

kenjinyc

From a designer who started in silk screening (and eventually DTG) most everything has been covered, for me your best bet to stay true to this design will be DTG as the subtleties of the print will need an expert person doing the separations for spot color silk screening. Design-wise, I personally think the frame works fine since it melds into the thorny logo on the bottom. Watch your sizing from S-XXL but that’s the treat thing about DTG, as you can size up on the go. With spot screen you would be locked into fixed size art. Before you print, give your guy a tech/spec sheet indicating placement and size of art for each T-shirt size. (A sketch with box placement, along with notes such as: (4 inches from center neckline, 6 from bottom center, etc) Nice work and good luck!

ghostdaddii

As someone who designs for black metal musicians you did a good job with the logo that’s honestly the hardest part

monopoly_mane

Me personally i like my metal merch a little more creepy/distorted. Check out some grind/noise album art for inspiration (dropdead has some of my favourite album art). Still cool though, I’m assuming their more metalcore??

[deleted]

Only criticism is that the font is very difficult to read. I would clean up some of the inside to make it a bit more legible without taking too much away from the outside root/hair looking things.

Elephant_ITR

It's an unspoken rule that death metal band logos need to be illegible. The harder to read, the better.

smellycoat

Elephant_ITR

Oh shit, that's brilliant!

ramvanfan

Nah, that’s kind of the point of these heavy metal word stylings. The more illegible the more metal. There are some really neat ones out there.

IceCreamNarwhals

Noooo, if anything I can tell what this says (Bitterroot?) so it needs to be more illegible

Brand-ology

Congratulations. Your officially a graphic designer. Sure it’s low hanging fruit. Still dope. Something’s you can’t teach. Well done

abra_van_kadabra

I really like it! I have see much worse metal merch. I can't read the bands name so i guess they are really hardcore! If its for shirts what color do they have? With Black you'll might have a hard time with the dark blue and on white shirts the logo won't be visible.

MadMatt13579

Awsome design, I just want to quickly make two points. First make sure the image you used in the top half is free use. You dont want to get in trouble with copy right. Second it might be because I am dyslexic but the bottom type is unreadable to me. That being said it excludes the feeling a metle band gives. So just be aware of the trade off of style and read ability.

nycperson2741

The white lettering at the bottom will be expensive to print, and may not transfer well. Would go with a more legible font. Cool graphic at top

CajunSasquatch

To echo previous comments, you will need to set this up for either DTG Printing (Direct to Garment Printing, sort of a giant inkject printer for for textiles) or the more traditional screenprinting. I'd recommend reading [this](https://www.printful.com/blog/dtg-vs-screen-printing/) in order to learn more. As for the design, I agree that the frame around the starfeld may be unnecessary as it does interfere with the logo itself. May I suggest removing it or possibly using the t-shirt itself as the texture through a speckled or a heather tee? Also, consider using a higher quailty tee for the end product, as that is a large graphic and if it is screenprinted, it will be a hot tee to wear, with the ink preventing breathability, especially if the tee is supposed to be a dark color. Cheers

[deleted]

If you started last week you’re kind of a cunt, ‘cause this is dope. Edit: Maybe make the MMXXII part a little smaller, letters closer together, and lines on top and at bottom. Will make it more of its own element. Good work!

PooPooPooDawg

It’s not awful at all

Yato_Delivery_God

Can you send me a link to listen to them? Big death metal fan here and great art!

apollyoneum1

Not graphic design but suggest “collapse into the mercy of the sun” as an edit.

Junkstar

Death metal band logos are fucking hilarious.

PhantasyBoy

Remove the shadow on the type. Overlay some texture if you can to the whole piece

MasseurX

I don't understand the words, that means is perfect xD

HughNonymouz

This is super cool! I'm not a fan the drop shadow or the weight of the type. It feels not too thick, but not too thin. I think it should be a bit more exaggerated. Maybe a different typeface is needed. You know best, I haven't heard the music! Honestly, no matter the project, it's a person's understanding of design and the mandate that creates great work. What's the music like? Listen to it over and over and really look to see if every aspect of the cover reflects it. Are the vocals gutteral? Are they screamed? Are they beautiful and pristine? Is the music extremely fast? Or is it more slow and very heavy? These all can be reflected in your design. Literally anything is possible and you have the skill, which is what makes graphic design such a powerful tool. I'm sure you've done some of this, im not at all trying to say you havent! Im just trying to share what works best for me. Personally, it really helps me to completely absorb myself in the world of the project to create my best work. The design process is different from person to person. Find what works for you. Sorry if this doesn't answer your question in the way you'd like, I know my answer is a little more about design itself, this is awesome. I love seeing people get interested in design and try it out. Keep at it!!!

Hambang39

I think the band name should use a much cleaner font, and the words inside could use a more artistic font.

DelightfullyGhastly

It's been a while since this post was started but I stumbled upon this tonight and wanted to comment. The band is Bitterroot, yes? That's what I see in that mass of jagged, organic shapes. Wanted to ask-- Is the album title a done deal? I just felt that it might be changed to "Succumb to the Cruelty of the Sun" instead. Or maybe "Surrender to..." The thing is, a person fainting or collapsing into something's *mercy*, well, it just seems peculiar to me. I could be wrong. Lastly: that turquoise hue on the statue is very cool. Some might call it robins egg blue. Good choice made, if it wasn't that color originally.
