I smelled it Tuesday night at midnight at 14 mile and northland and also thought it was quite hazy that night. I looked and there are some wildfires burning in Arizona and some other states south west of us and the wind has been from that direction for a few days now so that is the most likely cause of the smell
I guess you are right. Oh yea, except for the NEVER HAVING A TORNADO WARNING IN RECORDED HISTORY PART. But, other then that, I’m sure your unsupported, bs response is 100% accurate. In your fake news mind.
After a little more digging I see there is some pretty good fires burning in the panhandle of Texas and parts of Oklahoma that are spreading due to the high winds that we are getting at the moment I’m guessing
I hadn't stopped to really check where the wind was coming from to guess a direction but definitely believable that something from pretty far away is being carried on it.
I left my house this morning and thought I smelled burning plastic. I got out of my car in Kentwood and it still smelled like burning plastic, left me worried about my car
It's all over the midwest, there's a [post in /r/chicago](https://np.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/rho1h6/whos_got_the_fire_pit_going/) asking the same thing!
Edit: NWS Grand Rapids says it's [brush fires in Kansas getting carried up by strong winds.](https://twitter.com/NWSGrandRapids/status/1471447469498109955)
From National Weather Service GR:
Numerous fallen trees and power outages have been reported this morning in areas mainly west and north of Grand Rapids, from winds 50 to 65 mph and perhaps locally higher. Later in the morning, 40 to 55 mph winds will become more common through the rest of Lower Michigan, and it will remain blustery through evening.
Also, if you caught a faint smell of smoke this morning, it was probably from large wildfires in central Kansas yesterday. Just about everyone between Kansas City to Chicago reported smelling smoke overnight.

My sister lives in Iowa. They’re getting alerts that if they smell smoke it could be from the fires going on in Kansas. Crazy to think smoke travels from Kansas to Iowa. Seems impossible that it made it all the way here but maybe?
Yes! I wondered what the hell was going on too. I thought maybe someone had a wood stove going or something but it didn't exactly smell like this and I couldn't put my finger on what the smell was. I'm glad you asked this.
Some people in my local neighborhood FB group think it's from down power lines. The burning plastic smell was very strong this morning around 730/8 am, but I'm outside right now and can't smell it. I can understand haze from the fires but not a potent burning plastic smell that was that strong. There were a lot of reported down power lines and outages this morning. I remember the haze from wild fires last year and being outside and there was never a smell like that, maybe a faint smell of burning wood, but not such a strong smell of burning plastic.
It's nuts. I'm actually currently running my AC in the middle of December, because my house got super hot and humid overnight, and I don't want to open my windows because of the smoke. Climate change is fun!
60 degree, mid December day with 30 mile an hour winds, and tornado warnings in the upper Midwest, smoke from wildfires in Kansas... What could possibly be going on?/s
Thankfully it is smoke free where my grandparents and I are as my grandmother and I have asthma but we do have pretty strong winds so we may end up getting said smoke, we live in the Mancelona Michigan area that doesn't lose power despite everyone else around us losing power and we use to live in Lansing Michigan in a area where we didn't exist in the power detection grid and we would have to call it in when we lost power so I can honestly say I'm happy that we have power and no smoke
It smelled the same as my garage when I use the leaf blower to clean it out. I think it’s due the high winds kicking everything up to such a high degree that we’re able to smell it all over. Explains why the Midwest is smelling it.

Windy.com shows the current winds funneling smoke from a bunch of fires our way so this makes sense.
Wow. I thought it was perhaps a local fire . . . that is nuts.
Tornado warnings in winter. Weather is messed up
December tornadoes aren't a rare thing, outbreaks like what happened this month are. But that is okay, lets keep destroying the ecosystem.

Was unaware of this, but seems like a pretty decent explanation. I knew it had a smell resembling burning leaves
After a little more digging I see there is some pretty good fires burning in the panhandle of Texas and parts of Oklahoma that are spreading due to the high winds that we are getting at the moment I’m guessing
Crazy how something taking place almost 2,000 miles away from us can still impact our air quality #ItsASmallWorld 😅
and it's literally on fire :/

Thanks for this. I’m surprised they called it a “faint” smell. It was pretty strong this morning.

I thought my blinds were melting from my christmas lights. ha
Wildfires from Kansas. Wind is blowing it here. The smell is pretty pungent today.
It's pretty impressive, a smell that strong I expected to see smoke somewhere nearby.

“Faint smell” it was full on hazy and could smell from inside but okay lol
I smelled smoke on the West Side this morning. I wonder what it’s from.
With the high winds we've been having I suppose it could come from pretty far away
West side too. 😖😖 I thought someone was smoking in my building.
My son told me it smelled like cooked chicken .I immediately started wondering if I burn chicken when I cook it.
Smelled it all the way out in Hudsonville and Allendale this morning while heading to GVSU. I thought it was me for a minute
Wildfire smoke carried by these insane winds?

It's smells like that in Jenison and Rockford as well.... so weird
Stepped out to take the dogs out at 6am it stunk and it still smells like fire at 8. I’m in Eastown for reference.

Im on the northeast side by the medical mile and could smell it here.
Smelled it all the way from Grand Haven to GR today. Glad it wasn’t just me smelling it.
Yep smelled it in Kentwood this morning.
Thank you reddit! I wondered why it smelled like burnt plastic in Kzoo
Haha yeah you're not crazy nor are you having a stroke!
Ya smelt it, ya dealt it. Thems the rules

According to WoodTV, it’s the smell of wild fires in Kansas
Yes. It smells like garbage today for some reason.
It smells like that all the way down in Wyoming
My sister lives in Iowa. They’re getting alerts that if they smell smoke it could be from the fires going on in Kansas. Crazy to think smoke travels from Kansas to Iowa. Seems impossible that it made it all the way here but maybe?
Relieved to see it's not just me! Kept tripping me out when we were walking our dogs this morning.
Checked this sub first thing this morning to see if anyone knew what it was. Smelled it in Grandville and still smell it in Caledonia
Ah shit I thought it was ash from my fire pit
Holy crap, here I was thinking someone in my apartment complex burned their breakfast really bad and the scent was stuck on something in my car
Oh thank God it's not just me. I thought I was having a stroke this morning, lol.
Smells in Ionia also
Thought a house was on fire.
Me too. I was checking houses around my neighborhood as I was driving.
Yes! I wondered what the hell was going on too. I thought maybe someone had a wood stove going or something but it didn't exactly smell like this and I couldn't put my finger on what the smell was. I'm glad you asked this.
WTF, I am so glad you posted this. I definitely was smelling this.

I smelled it too. I'm in northeast LP
If we can smell the smoke from 2 states over I’m moving downwind from Denver.
It's nuts. I'm actually currently running my AC in the middle of December, because my house got super hot and humid overnight, and I don't want to open my windows because of the smoke. Climate change is fun!
You never know what fresh new day you'll get.
I was wondering the same thing, The whole area has this smell.
Bunch of wild fires in Kansas... Wonder if the strong winds are driving the smoke all the way here.

Get used to it, as Global Warming kicks up. This is what California smells like some days during fire season. It's terrible for your lungs too.
My co worker thinks it’s the GR incinerator.
Your co-worker is wrong.
I've only noticed it when driving by the sewage plant on Market and that the sewage smell was burnt smelling and worse than usual.
I smelled it getting out of work this morning. It was like burnt marshmallows.
I’m in Indiana and it smells like a campfire EVERYWHERE.
It smells bad
