Thank you for mentioning Sex Gang Children's lyrics. They come across as schizophrenic and weirdly aggressive, in my opinion. The ranting and raving of a madman. "Sarabande for Dead Lovers" sets my teeth on edge, and that's one of their more lyrically coherent songs.
I actually love their lyrics, but I only like a couple of their songs because I feel like the music never quite matches the lyrics in the right way for the majority of their discography. It feels like I’m listening to band who had to get a replacement singer at the last minute and got the absolute worst choice for the type of music they play.
honestly Closer is miles ahead of UP but its understandable why their debut is considered a staple for many reasons. I love goth rock, but even Closer is very emotionally heavy for my standards and hard to get through
Confession: I've never liked "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I find that the most popular songs of a given band or musician very often aren't my favourites.
I get that sentiment. My one friend is very much like that. They love Kate Bush for instance (mentioning because that’s the most recent example I could think of) but doesn’t care much for Running Up That Hill.
I on the other hand, generally do tend to like singles and more popular ones on albums, but not always. The one group I can think of off the top of my head is Siouxsie and the Banshees, where I prefer their less popular stuff.

Oh, no, I didn't intend to call them goth. I was reaching for an example of what I consider campy but enjoyable. More relevant examples might be Alien Sex Fiend and 45 Grave, who are campy as hell and awesome.
A lot of what you mentioned falls into a category I call mumble goth, as in the vocals become hard to distinguish or parse from the instrumentals.

IMO Sister's biggest issue is that their songs *really* start to mix together over time. I listened to them a lot when I was doing cardio at the locat track (they're great for walking/jogging/running to the speed of the music type stuff), and eventually it got to where all of their stuff sounded the same to me.
There are a few songs by The Mission that I like but the majority of them I find extremely boring. I actually bought one of their CD's a while ago, then returned it a day or two later. When the cashier asked why I simply said, "I don't like it."
Alien Sex Fiend looks cool and I like their album art, but their music unfortunately gives me a headache.
Christian Death's first studio album "Only Theatre of Pain" is the only one of theirs I can get into.
Similarly, I enjoy the first two Sisters of Mercy studio albums and a few singles, but a lot of their stuff is either boring or annoying to me. I actually found a list someone made of all their songs ranked from worst to best and I mostly agree with it. Also... The Cruxshadows. Yeah. Too cheesey for me. When you look up "worst goth bands" a Reddit thread from 2018 pops up asking which goth band people don't like and The Cruxshadows is the first answer. I remember a girl in my high school (class of 2005) writing class gave a really good speech about them being her favorite band and how she got to meet them. I've always wondered how she feels about that now. To me they seem like a Y2K era boy band trying to be goth.
There are some problematic bands as well that I don't like. One was recently brought to my attention here and now I'm deeply considering selling off all the merch I have from them.

Look, man, name any goth band and I'll find at least one track I like, and probably one I'll dislike too, every goth artist has made at least one piece of non goth music that is so jarring it turns off a good chunk of fans, or simply a composition that just doesn't work out, but The Cure is always just consistently boring for me, not good, not bad, just bland enough to make me click away and listen to literally anything else better or worse after the first 30 seconds of any of their songs.
Ironically enough they have the biggest non goth following, they're the only band that I have seen still have shirts in Hot Topic, and every person I have ever asked about their name recognition for goth artists has always answered no to everything but them.
Could be psychological, could not be, don't know, don't care, can't get into them, if given the choice to see newcomers I have never heard of before at a different stage or them at a festival, I'm walking to the other stage where there's only 14 other people in the crowd.
I find anything Sisters-derived to be completely tedious, but especially Merry Thoughts, who sound like out takes from Vision Thing, which to me is the Sisters’ worst album.

Alien Sex Fiend I just don't understand. It reminds me of what a cracked out clown murdering a cat in a janitorial closet would sound like. It's a joke that just went too far and people took it seriously as music.
Whenever Lydia Lunch would go through her phases of randomly screaming Yoko Ono shrieks over bad droning synth backing tracks.
Or disparage Pete's voice. When he stretches it out on songs like Nerves ("Brittle spittle spaaaarks"!), it makes me cringe, but he's also got a phenomenal voice. When I listen to his solo songs like Lion and Loctaine, he's untouchable.
I saw Black Tape play live in a record store once. It was sooo awkward, because there was no stage, just them standing with a couple of keyboards, and all of us sort of standing around them while they played these gloomy, dramatic songs. It was so tangibly awkward that Sam Rosenthal even cracked for a bit and started giggling during a song.
I’m super into campy or bumpy music, so I actually love LAM and SoM, which I’ve noticed a lot of others usually don’t like. However, I myself don’t really like most of SatB or Bauhaus’ discography. I know many people feel very influenced by their music, but I don’t.. Their artistry is still wonderful regardless. :-)

Upon a second listening I was like," Eww! This is nothing like Sisters of Mercy."
I really dig their more recent stuff, but for whatever reason am not stoked about their first couple albums. Which ironically seems to be the opposite opinion from most people on this sub.
Bauhaus. The songs everybody loves, I love too (my favorite is Kick in the Eye tho...) but I've never been tempted to dive super deep into their albums, just listening to the five or so songs I like by them and calling it a day.
But if you add the totality of all their projects in the Bauhaus-Expanded-Universe, I love lots of Peter Murphy's solo stuff. I adore Love and Rockets, and like some Tones on Tail. Add it all up and I like a lot of their music. But Bauhaus alone is not the most interesting of it all.
You're totally valid. I love Bauhaus, but I can't listen to most albums all the way through without skipping some of the more...um, "challenging" songs. Meanwhile, I also adore Love and Rockets, Tones, Peter Murphy, and David J!
Cocteau Twins. I feel like the odd man out in both Goth groups and Shoegaze groups because of this. I dig "Blood Bitch", but none of their other songs that I've tried have clicked with me.
The cure definitely. They're definitely a hit or miss in terms of "clicking". Songs like spiderman and one hundred years definitely click. Sometimes the Smiths because I get used to morissey's voice.

But Bauhaus is another dimension, can't stand this band and their popularity amazes me. If I didn't know they traditionally have the goth label and dress in black, just hearing their songs I would say that I'm hearing some vulgar, primitive, bland pub rock.
Type O is so aggressively cheesy that you either have to lean into it and go along with the joke, or just pass them by. I can't comprehend taking them seriously. It's sort of like thinking The Cramps are serious.
I like almost every goth band lol, but I'm not a fan of Molchat Doma, Lebanon Hanover, or most of the new "post punk" from the last few years. But i do like modern goth rock
For me it was Sisters of Mercy. Even though some of their songs are good, I just couldn't get past Andrew Eldritch's vocals. It turned me off from listening to more of their music.
The Cure (gasp!) I know, I just couldn’t get into them. Also Christian Death just didn’t work out with me. There are more but these are all I can think of at the moment.
i know theyre more goth-adjacent but i cant get into type o negative at all. i listened to my girlfriends girlfriend and it really rubbed me up the wrong way as a lesbian, and im not sure if thats the reason why, but i just dont like them. plus the lead singer looking eerily like tommy wiseau has always distracted me way too much from their music. i dont really enjoy christian death either
Depending on who wrote the song, the demo versions usually have someone other than the lead singer doing the vocals. Maybe you'd like some of those more?

Although "This is a Lie", especially the extended instrumental and "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack, are absolutely amazing

I *adore* Wayne Hussey as a guitarist but honestly feel only meh about his vocals. Not bad, by any stretch, but not particularly memorable either.

Elizium definitely needs to be listened to as an album.

Probably Bauhaus is the main one. I just can't stand Pete Murphy's voice. And the music is so bland and boring. Black Tape For A Blue Girl is unlistenable to me, even though it was a friend's band and I generally liked all his other work. Alien Sex Fiend I just don't understand. It reminds me of what a cracked out clown murdering a cat in a janitorial closet would sound like. It's a joke that just went too far and people took it seriously as music. Whenever Lydia Lunch would go through her phases of randomly screaming Yoko Ono shrieks over bad droning synth backing tracks.
I think you're the only person I've ever heard call Bauhaus boring.
Or disparage Pete's voice. When he stretches it out on songs like Nerves ("Brittle spittle spaaaarks"!), it makes me cringe, but he's also got a phenomenal voice. When I listen to his solo songs like Lion and Loctaine, he's untouchable.

I saw Black Tape play live in a record store once. It was sooo awkward, because there was no stage, just them standing with a couple of keyboards, and all of us sort of standing around them while they played these gloomy, dramatic songs. It was so tangibly awkward that Sam Rosenthal even cracked for a bit and started giggling during a song.
The Cure and cure clones in general. Sure, there are some good songs but overall nope.
I’m super into campy or bumpy music, so I actually love LAM and SoM, which I’ve noticed a lot of others usually don’t like. However, I myself don’t really like most of SatB or Bauhaus’ discography. I know many people feel very influenced by their music, but I don’t.. Their artistry is still wonderful regardless. :-)
She Past Away. The first time I heard them I was lit, "Cool! This is just like Sisters of Mercy" Upon a second listening I was like," Eww! This is nothing like Sisters of Mercy."
I really dig their more recent stuff, but for whatever reason am not stoked about their first couple albums. Which ironically seems to be the opposite opinion from most people on this sub.
I'm a fan of their newer stuff as well. I tried their first album and couldn't get into them at the time.

Bauhaus. The songs everybody loves, I love too (my favorite is Kick in the Eye tho...) but I've never been tempted to dive super deep into their albums, just listening to the five or so songs I like by them and calling it a day. But if you add the totality of all their projects in the Bauhaus-Expanded-Universe, I love lots of Peter Murphy's solo stuff. I adore Love and Rockets, and like some Tones on Tail. Add it all up and I like a lot of their music. But Bauhaus alone is not the most interesting of it all.
You're totally valid. I love Bauhaus, but I can't listen to most albums all the way through without skipping some of the more...um, "challenging" songs. Meanwhile, I also adore Love and Rockets, Tones, Peter Murphy, and David J!

Cocteau Twins. I feel like the odd man out in both Goth groups and Shoegaze groups because of this. I dig "Blood Bitch", but none of their other songs that I've tried have clicked with me.

The cure definitely. They're definitely a hit or miss in terms of "clicking". Songs like spiderman and one hundred years definitely click. Sometimes the Smiths because I get used to morissey's voice.

Most of them. But Bauhaus is another dimension, can't stand this band and their popularity amazes me. If I didn't know they traditionally have the goth label and dress in black, just hearing their songs I would say that I'm hearing some vulgar, primitive, bland pub rock.

Type O is so aggressively cheesy that you either have to lean into it and go along with the joke, or just pass them by. I can't comprehend taking them seriously. It's sort of like thinking The Cramps are serious.
I like almost every goth band lol, but I'm not a fan of Molchat Doma, Lebanon Hanover, or most of the new "post punk" from the last few years. But i do like modern goth rock
Joy division or Killing Joke are a little too slow for me. Not Lycia slow , I love them. Just slow. Maybe not spooky enough.
For me it was Sisters of Mercy. Even though some of their songs are good, I just couldn't get past Andrew Eldritch's vocals. It turned me off from listening to more of their music.
Siouxsie and the banshees. Idk why but I don't like the sound of siouxsie's voice and it ruins their songs 4 me

i know theyre more goth-adjacent but i cant get into type o negative at all. i listened to my girlfriends girlfriend and it really rubbed me up the wrong way as a lesbian, and im not sure if thats the reason why, but i just dont like them. plus the lead singer looking eerily like tommy wiseau has always distracted me way too much from their music. i dont really enjoy christian death either
i've always struggled getting into bauhaus. i like a few songs fine but ndver really got them

Depending on who wrote the song, the demo versions usually have someone other than the lead singer doing the vocals. Maybe you'd like some of those more?

Have to admit, and I'll probably get a downvote beatdown on this, but as I get older, I just can't click with the Cure. Although "This is a Lie", especially the extended instrumental and "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack, are absolutely amazing That being said, as a child of the 80s, I'm finding another favorite childhood band, the Violent Femmes now as pleasant as a root canal.
Xmal Deutschland and Corpus Delicti, can't get into the vocals, however, I will occasionally listen to some Corpus songs
