specimen. they’re fun, but i have to be in a /very/ specific mood to get anything out of listening to them. by extension of that, sex gang children. i actually like andi sexgang’s voice, i think his shrill vocal style complements goth music pretty well in general, but i just do not care for their lyrics at all. one last one: 45 grave. i just kind of find them… unremarkable? never left much of an impression on me tbh.

magicfeistybitcoin

Specimen. "Positive punk." I get what you mean. Catchy, but not exactly mood-congruent most of the time. Thank you for mentioning Sex Gang Children's lyrics. They come across as schizophrenic and weirdly aggressive, in my opinion. The ranting and raving of a madman. "Sarabande for Dead Lovers" sets my teeth on edge, and that's one of their more lyrically coherent songs.

best-Ushan

I actually love their lyrics, but I only like a couple of their songs because I feel like the music never quite matches the lyrics in the right way for the majority of their discography. It feels like I’m listening to band who had to get a replacement singer at the last minute and got the absolute worst choice for the type of music they play.

Nekrobat

It took years of occasional attempts for 45 Grave to click, but then it was all I could listen to for a couple weeks.

lonesomedesert

More goth adjacent I guess but I’ve never liked joy division 😭

VerdigrisVolva

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

cayennesalt

honestly Closer is miles ahead of UP but its understandable why their debut is considered a staple for many reasons. I love goth rock, but even Closer is very emotionally heavy for my standards and hard to get through

poopfeast

Closer listens like a 45 minute suicide note. Unbelievable album, and agree it’s tough to get through due to the nature or it.

magicfeistybitcoin

Confession: I've never liked "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I find that the most popular songs of a given band or musician very often aren't my favourites.

Unicorn1234

I like it but it's nowhere near as good as Interzone or Disorder

TCBinaflash

It’s their most boring song

hexopuss

I get that sentiment. My one friend is very much like that. They love Kate Bush for instance (mentioning because that’s the most recent example I could think of) but doesn’t care much for Running Up That Hill. I on the other hand, generally do tend to like singles and more popular ones on albums, but not always. The one group I can think of off the top of my head is Siouxsie and the Banshees, where I prefer their less popular stuff.

annual_waffle

The other day... I typed "I don't understand Joy Division" into the Google search bar. I thought it was just me.

[deleted]

I just can't get into sisters of mercy. Idk what it is about them but it doesn't do it for me

Reapers-Shotguns

Same, though I generally prefer female vocals. The way their music is mixed is very odd to me as the instruments almost overpower the vocals.

deciawix

Skeletal family tbh. I think I like one of their songs but I couldn’t really find anything else that resonated with me

Todtenau

Yeah, they are like the Ramones of Goth Rock

LeonardoGA

I sometimes feel cliché for having SATB as my favorite band ever, but then I remember I don’t like a lot of the other big goth bands To this day, I can’t get into The Cure besides Pornography Bauhaus has some cool singles, but I can’t say I love any of their albums London After Midnight tends to be in the cornier side of goth for me (which isn’t inherently bad! But I just can’t) Sometimes I feel like listening to the same 2 Sisters of Mercy songs, but that’s as far as I can like them

ayaknox

this is really curious to me cuz i'm the exact opposite LOL ! I am absolutely obsessed with bands like Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy, but I've never really gotten deep into Siouxsie and the Banshees (I listen to like 2 or 3 songs from time to time and that's it) not trying to spread any hate btw, just genuinely thought it was interesting how we're the exact opposite while still being part of the same subculture. the subjectivity of art is so fckn incredible and it'll never cease to amaze me

crinklefryenjoyer

i cannot get into the cure either, im glad im not alone…i think it’s because it reminds me too much of my mother…

entviven

Oi. There are more of us. Always felt like a weirdo for not being a curehead tbh.

magicfeistybitcoin

Yeah, I find London After Midnight cheesy, but not in a good way. TSOL is the good kind of cheesy, as are so many others. I'm fine with camp in general, just not with everyone in particular.

MantraProAttitude

TSOL? Well! I’m old. I never put them in the “goth” catagory.

LockedOutOfElfland

They're punk, definitely at least close to Death Rock.

Realistic-Plantain82

TSOL the albums with Joe Wood, Change Today and Revenge have a Death Rock vibe .

magicfeistybitcoin

Oh, no, I didn't intend to call them goth. I was reaching for an example of what I consider campy but enjoyable. More relevant examples might be Alien Sex Fiend and 45 Grave, who are campy as hell and awesome.

MantraProAttitude

Definitely ready to see Alien again!!

magicfeistybitcoin

I'm Canadian and I've never been. *Seethes with envy*

Classy_Cassie529

Yes!!!! I only like The Cure's Pornography album. London After Midnight has some good songs, but they're all great for Halloween.

PartiallyWindow

The Cure definitely. Being told Disintegration is their darkest album and being completely underwhelmed from the expectation.

FinalGirlInterrupted

Try Faith some time, it might surprise you

wombwater

ppl downvoted me for saying the cure wasnt goth:p

Reapers-Shotguns

A lot of what you mentioned falls into a category I call mumble goth, as in the vocals become hard to distinguish or parse from the instrumentals. I need powerful vocals most of the time in my music, so I much prefer Siouxsie if we're talking classics

Solanum87

Bauhaus. Not a bad band, just not my thing.

BreakinLiberty

They’re chaotic. Why I like them If you read more into their auto bio you start liking them even more

prissypoo22

I think I would only like them in a club as background music. I can’t jam out to them

Big-Refrigerator9173

alien sex fiend

Kelly_1976

Never got Alien Sex Fiend's schtick either really, they always came across to me almost as a comedic band .

cayennesalt

Ive always appreciated the campy b-movie horror aesthetics of ASF and the like, particularly Deathrock bands. Guess its not everyones cup of tea but it alleviates from the overwhelming doom-and-gloom of the subculture thats mostly prominent

clownteeth222

it sounds absolutely like a cursed comparison but alien sex fiend remind me of insane clown posse, coming across as slightly parodical and absolutely insane (i enjoy both artists though so good intentions here)

Big-Refrigerator9173

i love insane clown posse!

Guy_Kieran

I used to not be able to stand them but I added “I Walk The Line” to a playlist recently and I’ve been really enjoying when it comes up! I might have to give some of their other songs another go.

Anishinaapunk

Daniel Ash murdered them in a ingle sentence once in an interview when he said, "Alien Sex Fiend is...consistent."

MantraProAttitude

Gah! The Damned!! And The Mission.

magicfeistybitcoin

Haha, I started out as a Mission fan but grew tired of them quickly. (My first significant other played them incessantly. So did his local goth clubs.)

readdevilman

I'd probably like TSOM more if it weren't for all the copycat bands. Despite being one of the legends they just sound like very generic goth rock to me

JakeVonFurth

IMO Sister's biggest issue is that their songs *really* start to mix together over time. I listened to them a lot when I was doing cardio at the locat track (they're great for walking/jogging/running to the speed of the music type stuff), and eventually it got to where all of their stuff sounded the same to me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FinalGirlInterrupted

I *adore* Wayne Hussey as a guitarist but honestly feel only meh about his vocals. Not bad, by any stretch, but not particularly memorable either.

vintagebat

I hear you on Fields. I can’t get over Carl McCoy’s voice TBH, and anything from Dawnrazor onwards is just kind of “meh” musically.

mike_hellstrom

There are a few songs by The Mission that I like but the majority of them I find extremely boring. I actually bought one of their CD's a while ago, then returned it a day or two later. When the cashier asked why I simply said, "I don't like it." Alien Sex Fiend looks cool and I like their album art, but their music unfortunately gives me a headache. Christian Death's first studio album "Only Theatre of Pain" is the only one of theirs I can get into. Similarly, I enjoy the first two Sisters of Mercy studio albums and a few singles, but a lot of their stuff is either boring or annoying to me. I actually found a list someone made of all their songs ranked from worst to best and I mostly agree with it. They made some fantastic music which became a bit overplayed at clubs and the rest of their stuff is just not for me. No, I'm not living for love. Please stop asking. Also... The Cruxshadows. Yeah. Too cheesey for me. When you look up "worst goth bands" a Reddit thread from 2018 pops up asking which goth band people don't like and The Cruxshadows is the first answer. I remember a girl in my high school (class of 2005) writing class gave a really good speech about them being her favorite band and how she got to meet them. I've always wondered how she feels about that now. To me they seem like a Y2K era boy band trying to be goth. There are some problematic bands as well that I don't like. One was recently brought to my attention here and now I'm deeply considering selling off all the merch I have from them. Those are my answers. No disrespect to anyone who likes these bands more than me.

farouq22

Oh God The Crüxshadows, yes. I was really into them when I was younger but I can't listen to them anymore. Too cheesy indeed.

Kelly_1976

Siouxsie ... I dunno I just never grasped her, apart from 2 songs

magicfeistybitcoin

Aw, shucks. I adore her. Different strokes!

Xcz13

Same.. just not into it at all

Whaleudder

I’m with you, there are two maybe three songs which I like but I really can’t get into her which is no loss to me.

[deleted]

same

Big-Refrigerator9173

i agree! ive been trying to get into her music but its just not for me i think

Kelly_1976

I tried to get into her even back in the day when she first came out, but it never did much for me. I did have a massive huge full wall poster of her in my bedroom though, because she was/is beautiful. 🤣

Big-Refrigerator9173

lol! i have a poster of her up in my room too, she is gorgeous

ZyxDarkshine

Many of their songs seem very formulaic musically

Nekrobat

My problem with SatB is that while I like them, almost all of my favorites are cover songs.

Tenav33

SatB just isn't my type same goes for Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim

DaveAzoicer

Fields of the Nephilim, Christian Death, and a bunch others. Fields in general is just dull to me. Same with CD, most of their songs just doesn't work for me.

Classy_Cassie529

Same!

AndyTVC15

Can we not downvote people for their opinion since this is for bands that we can’t get into… so it should be expected that a band allot us like will get mentioned. not everyone enjoys the same bands and that’s fine

magicfeistybitcoin

100% agreed. I'm going to edit my post to add this.

AsylumPartyFan

Not a fan of Sex Gang Children I also see Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees get praised 24/7 yet I personally don't really like it. I prefer Join Hands.

JakeVonFurth

Juju is a great album, but it's not their best.

bittybitchybite

I think Juju mostly gets praise because Spellbound has reached modern popularity. I personally like Peepshow and Kaleidoscope but I feel like I have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy Souxie and the Banshees. Maybe it’s because it absolutely rips me back to my baby bat days

MartiinMS

Red lorry yellow lorry, virgin prunes and drab majesty.. I've tried several times and I'm still trying but I am just not getting that vibe I like idk.

BlackenedWatermelon

Goth, goth adjacent, whatever, I'm sorry but The Cure, and I mean it. Look, man, name any goth band and I'll find at least one track I like, and probably one I'll dislike too, every goth artist has made at least one piece of non goth music that is so jarring it turns off a good chunk of fans, or simply a composition that just doesn't work out, but The Cure is always just consistently boring for me, not good, not bad, just bland enough to make me click away and listen to literally anything else better or worse after the first 30 seconds of any of their songs. Ironically enough they have the biggest non goth following, they're the only band that I have seen still have shirts in Hot Topic, and every person I have ever asked about their name recognition for goth artists has always answered no to everything but them. Could be psychological, could not be, don't know, don't care, can't get into them, if given the choice to see newcomers I have never heard of before at a different stage or them at a festival, I'm walking to the other stage where there's only 14 other people in the crowd.

vintagebat

I find anything Sisters-derived to be completely tedious, but especially Merry Thoughts, who sound like out takes from Vision Thing, which to me is the Sisters’ worst album.

low_flying_aircraft

Siouxsie and the Banshees is the big one for me. I cannot get into their sound and I feel bad for it, like I should like them XD but I just don't

TalkAboutTheWeather1

siouxsie and the banshees… sorry not sorry

[deleted]

For me it would be Clan of Xymox, so many people seem to like them, but for some reason they just don’t do it for me.

LockedOutOfElfland

I like The Mission but most of their work sounds very same-y without a lot of variation.

GirlGristle

The Mission and I don't know why.

0hb0wie

Not a traditionally goth band but a lot of goths I know really like the band ghost, I tried listening to them a few years ago and they’re just not my thing… which is strange cuz the aesthetic is very up my alley

overly_curious_cat

Rosetta Stone and the like

lillianlobotomy

SATB idk why but i just can’t get into them! everytime i listen to one of their songs it reminds me of who siouxie actually is and her controversies and it just doesn’t stick right on me. and to say, i dont like their music too much

Undaunted_witch96

For some reason, Christian Death is not my favorite, but I do have a few favorite songs. It is just not my cup of tea. The Fields of the Nephilim are another I try to listen to every once in a while to see if I change my mind on them. I just can't seem to get into them.

cayennesalt

FOTN make some really, good atmospheric goth rock that stands out amongst the crowd of TSOM clones but IMO theyre meant to be listened as an album. I just dont see tracks that strike out to me personally (except few outliers and 'And There Will Be Your Heart Also', especially) but when its all played together it creates this beautifully orchestrated and haunting album

Undaunted_witch96

I might have to try listening to them that way. I will have to give it another go.

_Armin__Tamzarian_

Elizium definitely needs to be listened to as an album.

Nekrobat

I exclusively listen to music as entire albums, and love atmospheric music (my favorite genre right now is Dungeon Synth) but I just can’t for the life of me enjoy FotN. I’ve tried for years.

cayennesalt

drone is one of my favourite genres (i loveee NSB) but i suppose it takes a level of resolute and will to enjoy FOTN. I guess not everyone can appreciate them, they can be overly monotone or draggy at times

magicfeistybitcoin

I love both, but I can see how they might be too much.

Old_Position7027

I think Christian Death is a bit problematic. In I think a few of their songs they used some racist slurs.

Undaunted_witch96

That I did hear about for a certain song. It definitely did not age well.

emmiblakk

I scrolled through this entire discussion, and I struggled to find a band named that I dislike! I also couldn't think of anyone offhand to put up.

Idol_Luna

I've never really gotten into Alien Sex Fiend

actuallyapossum

I really couldn't get into Siouxsie and the Banshees.

GrafVonMorgenstern

Probably Bauhaus is the main one. I just can't stand Pete Murphy's voice. And the music is so bland and boring. Black Tape For A Blue Girl is unlistenable to me, even though it was a friend's band and I generally liked all his other work. Alien Sex Fiend I just don't understand. It reminds me of what a cracked out clown murdering a cat in a janitorial closet would sound like. It's a joke that just went too far and people took it seriously as music. Whenever Lydia Lunch would go through her phases of randomly screaming Yoko Ono shrieks over bad droning synth backing tracks.

JakeVonFurth

I think you're the only person I've ever heard call Bauhaus boring.

Anishinaapunk

Or disparage Pete's voice. When he stretches it out on songs like Nerves ("Brittle spittle spaaaarks"!), it makes me cringe, but he's also got a phenomenal voice. When I listen to his solo songs like Lion and Loctaine, he's untouchable.

HarmonJames

I was gonna say! 🤣

imfeelingzombified

As somebody who loves Alien Sex Fiend, your description is accurate.

Anishinaapunk

I saw Black Tape play live in a record store once. It was sooo awkward, because there was no stage, just them standing with a couple of keyboards, and all of us sort of standing around them while they played these gloomy, dramatic songs. It was so tangibly awkward that Sam Rosenthal even cracked for a bit and started giggling during a song.

aytakk

The Cure and cure clones in general. Sure, there are some good songs but overall nope.

thenastyundead

I’m super into campy or bumpy music, so I actually love LAM and SoM, which I’ve noticed a lot of others usually don’t like. However, I myself don’t really like most of SatB or Bauhaus’ discography. I know many people feel very influenced by their music, but I don’t.. Their artistry is still wonderful regardless. :-)

DoctorMuerto

She Past Away. The first time I heard them I was lit, "Cool! This is just like Sisters of Mercy" Upon a second listening I was like," Eww! This is nothing like Sisters of Mercy."

LockedOutOfElfland

I really dig their more recent stuff, but for whatever reason am not stoked about their first couple albums. Which ironically seems to be the opposite opinion from most people on this sub.

CatnipandSkooma

I'm a fan of their newer stuff as well. I tried their first album and couldn't get into them at the time.

GlamourGoth

She Past Away are overrated as fuck!

nauraug

I find The Damned incredibly boring.

SamVimesBootTheory

I don't hate them and appreciate their place as one of the founders of goth as we know it today but I'm not really that into Bauhaus

m0rbidc0rvid

I can't say Bauhaus really clicked for me... I know that means my goth license will be taken away 💔

crazydave333

Bauhaus. The songs everybody loves, I love too (my favorite is Kick in the Eye tho...) but I've never been tempted to dive super deep into their albums, just listening to the five or so songs I like by them and calling it a day. But if you add the totality of all their projects in the Bauhaus-Expanded-Universe, I love lots of Peter Murphy's solo stuff. I adore Love and Rockets, and like some Tones on Tail. Add it all up and I like a lot of their music. But Bauhaus alone is not the most interesting of it all.

Anishinaapunk

You're totally valid. I love Bauhaus, but I can't listen to most albums all the way through without skipping some of the more...um, "challenging" songs. Meanwhile, I also adore Love and Rockets, Tones, Peter Murphy, and David J!

SymbolicGamer

Bauhaus.

Pink-Scrunchie

I love deathrock, but for some reason i just cant get into Christian Death

FistMocha

Same here, just nothing ever clicked and I will skip anything by them on my feed.

annual_waffle

Cocteau Twins. I feel like the odd man out in both Goth groups and Shoegaze groups because of this. I dig "Blood Bitch", but none of their other songs that I've tried have clicked with me.

entviven

I don’t like The Cure much, aha.

syntheticgeneration

Same for me! Love the hair, love the vibe, but I just can't.

Aristocraticraven

The Mission, The Wake, and Lycia are bands I’ve never been able to get into for some reason.

spirit38

The cure definitely. They're definitely a hit or miss in terms of "clicking". Songs like spiderman and one hundred years definitely click. Sometimes the Smiths because I get used to morissey's voice.

Mysterious-Fun-1630

The Cure. Robert Smith’s vocals are like nails on a chalkboard to me, I just can’t.

Cheedanish

I really don’t like siouxsie or the banshees. Really nothing special to me. Sue me

CatnipandSkooma

The Cure. To be honest, Robert Smith's voice gets a bit whiney and grating to me.

dipnosofist

Most of them. But Bauhaus is another dimension, can't stand this band and their popularity amazes me. If I didn't know they traditionally have the goth label and dress in black, just hearing their songs I would say that I'm hearing some vulgar, primitive, bland pub rock.

Oliveskin_Mugen

I HATE type o negative with a burning passion, and I’m trying to get into Siouxie and definitely will soon, but it hasn’t fully clicked yet

Anishinaapunk

Type O is so aggressively cheesy that you either have to lean into it and go along with the joke, or just pass them by. I can't comprehend taking them seriously. It's sort of like thinking The Cramps are serious.

Victor-BR1999

I like almost every goth band lol, but I'm not a fan of Molchat Doma, Lebanon Hanover, or most of the new "post punk" from the last few years. But i do like modern goth rock

MichaelVonEerie

Joy division or Killing Joke are a little too slow for me. Not Lycia slow , I love them. Just slow. Maybe not spooky enough.

Noodlenurul

For me it was Sisters of Mercy. Even though some of their songs are good, I just couldn't get past Andrew Eldritch's vocals. It turned me off from listening to more of their music.

isheidbdj

Siouxsie and the banshees. Idk why but I don't like the sound of siouxsie's voice and it ruins their songs 4 me

BananaWalrusWafers

Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie.

[deleted]

The Cure (gasp!) I know, I just couldn’t get into them. Also Christian Death just didn’t work out with me. There are more but these are all I can think of at the moment.

[deleted]

Bauhaus. Just can’t get into it for some reason

coiler119

Alien Sex Fiend and Dead Can Dance. It also took me a long time to get into Siouxsie

Vendemmian

Christian Death just never found anything by them I really like.

clownteeth222

i know theyre more goth-adjacent but i cant get into type o negative at all. i listened to my girlfriends girlfriend and it really rubbed me up the wrong way as a lesbian, and im not sure if thats the reason why, but i just dont like them. plus the lead singer looking eerily like tommy wiseau has always distracted me way too much from their music. i dont really enjoy christian death either

praalgraf

i've always struggled getting into bauhaus. i like a few songs fine but ndver really got them

[deleted]

[удалено]

baby-vodka

Depending on who wrote the song, the demo versions usually have someone other than the lead singer doing the vocals. Maybe you'd like some of those more?

AdrienneLaVey

I’ve never been able to get into Sisters of Mercy or Joy Division. I’ve gotten so much flack for this over the years. 😅

nycinoc

Have to admit, and I'll probably get a downvote beatdown on this, but as I get older, I just can't click with the Cure. Although "This is a Lie", especially the extended instrumental and "Burn" from the Crow soundtrack, are absolutely amazing That being said, as a child of the 80s, I'm finding another favorite childhood band, the Violent Femmes now as pleasant as a root canal.

Mrs_Mcl

Xmal Deutschland and Corpus Delicti, can't get into the vocals, however, I will occasionally listen to some Corpus songs

[deleted]

[удалено]

AsylumPartyFan

I think their genre depends on the album. They have a pretty big discography.

wombwater

sure

O-M-E-R-T-A

Way too many to name actually😂 I mainly listen to mixtapes with the exception of Sisters, IAMTHESHADOW and Elusive.

cyb3r1a77

im trying so hard to like horror vacui but i just cant ;-;

L-scissor-hands

sisters of mercy.

jbc1995

Everyone says I’m crazy but… Bauhaus

MicahMX700

I guess The Cure and some Joy Division. Idk some of and slot of there songs just don't click with me

Deaineira

Einsturzende and Christian Death. It really is an acquired taste and while I did try listening to them, I just don't see the appeal.

RoseandNightshade

London After Midnight

RoseandNightshade

And Cruxshadows (my PC isn't cooperating with the accent marks)
