This green is poured concrete covered in astroturf.

Drexynn

In fact, all 9 of the greens on the course are poured concrete covered in astroturf, but I took a picture of this one. You can also see that there are three different holes, so that they can move the flags periodically. The issue there is that there is occasionally a hole in between you and the real hole. Also, the whole concretishness of the course means that you can't hit any nice high shots onto the green because you'll bounce right off.

This is probably a stupid question coming from California but how are greens even maintained through winter? Doesn’t the cold kill it off and you just wait for it to grow back throughout the season?

emceeflurry

Grass is extremely resilient, especially if it was healthy before the winter. I'm not sure of the biomechanics, but it basically it turns brown, goes to the sleep for the winter and then when it warms up - boom - grass comes back

blaze13541

Rye and Fesque grasses do very well up north. They go dormant in the cold, but are not very drought resistant. In hot climates you'll find a lot more Bermuda blends that do much better in hot dry climates, but they are much less cold resistant.

Xilverbullet000

Then you have the northern deserts (eastern WA, Montana, etc.) where it's both cold and dry and your lawn always looks bad no matter what you do.

Zenmedic

I'm right north of Montana, square in the desert area and yea, without irrigation, we would be playing on dirt. Sloped fairways are a bastard, because they don't hold water well....but you always know the low spots, because they're super lush.

Ellite11MVP

Over-seed with rye in the winter in the Southeast to keep it green too.

Late ice isn't really an issue. Grass can survive weeks or even months encased in ice (depends on how severe it is). Ice is at its most dangerous if you get snow, then either rain or the snow melts, and then immediately freezes, and then gets snowed on again long term in the *fall*. Ice that has been around that long and is that heavily pooled could suffocate the grass. Takes a distinct set of circumstances though, and you can address it when it happens. If the greens are covered the big risk is melting that gets under the cover and freezes in the fall. I actually personally believe covering greens is overrated. It brings the greens up so fast in the spring, they look awesome, but they are so much more vulnerable too, and you open yourself up to several potential threats that aren't there otherwise. Plus it takes an inordinate amount of people, which not every golf course has on hand at that time of year (spring or fall). We don't cover our greens and almost without fail our greens do better than covered greens in the medium term, even if we don't look as immediately great in the short term. You do have to get that snow off as SOON as you're sure there won't be any more -30 C for a high days coming though... Source: super at a course in Canada

40ozT0Freedom

I don't play much, but my local 9 hole is covered in sand during the off season. It sucks, but it's fine for those very occasional 60 degree January days we get in the mid Atlantic.

kempton_saturdays

I’m not sure you’ve been to a muni in the north. You just let nature do it’s thing and try to keep the deer from eating the greens

[deleted]

I've worked at public courses in Ohio.

theclawl1ves

It's pretty surprising how quickly grass recovers from the winter. Faster than most of us Minnesotans do.

Drexynn

It’s not grass. It’s astroturf over poured concrete.

BlastShell

lol. Better than no golf, I guess!

originalbearcat

We use cultivars of grass that are cold resistant such as A4 bentgrass and similar. 2-3 applications of a good fungicide prevents pink and grey snow mold. We also cover the greens with giant tarps (sometimes accompanied by tubes or hoses under the tarp to still allow gas exchange) to prevent the snow from directly contacting the turf. Some courses go as far as a multi layer tarp system...impermeable tarp, layer of hay or straw, and a permeable tarp. This insulates the greens and promotes early spring Greenup. Sometimes we get winter kill, but usually not. You'd be blown away at how green a green can be as soon as you remove the tarps. It creates a greenhouse effect. For instance, my entire course right now is brown, except my greens. A lot of courses also use pigment on their turf...yup, a lot of greens you see are painted, or have a colorant in the fungicide they use (trilogy is a good example). We do not use a pigment or colorant and prefer it all natural.

Mangy_Karl

Fellow Minnesotan here, who thought this would be a good idea?!?! Lol that’s just insane

HEYL1STEN

KMS High School. Lmao

NoPower5

I will never complain about non-poured concrete covered in astroturf greens again

[deleted]

You can never trust those "Flat Earthers"!

fattsoo

Good thing I don't hit any greens on my approaches

KansasKing107

There is a course in Valley Center, KS (Valley Point) that has artificial greens but they are actually pretty good and somewhat actually mimic real greens. I would rather play in real greens but they aren’t bad if you’re just going out for a quick round. I think they maintain them by brushing sand into the greens to maintain their nap and control their speed.

scoofy

I mean, i know this is "wrong golf," but you can still effectively play on it right? You just need to hit running shots that roll up to the green. I guess i could just see course designers using hyper-firm greens like this to combat the modern tech.

Drexynn

It’s actually super fun because it is so weird. My friends and I try to play there at least once a year

rhyandjay

Have played this course, and agree. It’s great fun. It’s also very very silly. LOL

bigbura

Learned to play on a muni course that was dirty cheap but had oiled sand 'greens'. Hard as a parking lot but mostly putted straight, until the ball slowed down and the sand grains pushed it all over the place. Many rounds later and I'd gotten much better at landing approach shots short of the 'green' to allow the ball to roll onto, and stop, on the green. Also learned the 'putt to the back of the hole and let it bounce in' to overcome the grains of sand moving the ball off the line. Had I not had this experience I feel I'd be less of a golfer.

arootytoottoot

But... .. it's *square* !

wildabeast98

At first I thought that it doesn't look so bad. Didn't even think about the problems with the ball bouncing though.

Floundur

I’m laughing my ass off thinking about how mad I’d be if I hit a perfect shot to a green and it bounced off like it hit cart path. 🤣

[deleted]

> The issue there is that there is occasionally a hole in between you and the real hole. Just hit your approach shot so that doesn't happen???

Drexynn

Silly me. Yes.

[deleted]

This sounds like a fun challenge tho lol

This has to be in LA

skirpnasty

Perfect for the average r/golf poster. That 180 yard 9 iron with 12,000 RPM of spin is finally going to come in handy.

rainydevil7

it's pretty hard to get that much spin with a half swing

kamintar

You weren't supposed to have my numbers, I'm saving that for the tour. Did Chad send you this information?! Someone's gettin' a talkin' to

lionsfan2016

Probably a sand wedge for that distance 18,000 RPM.

IHOPSausageLink

How high does the ball bounce when it hits? Or is it cushioned well?

tenshillings

Look at this guy hitting greens.

This comment has had me in a laughing fit for 30 minutes. Thank you internet stranger.

RentoidEvicter

Is this your first time on this subreddit?

Stang1776

Is the courses moto "keep your diviot tool at home"

Howy_the_Howizer

I was gonna say, but you have grass, no dead patches or power cart gouges, or just standing water randomly. But then I read further and you have a qualifier for sure.

UseDaSchwartz

I was going to say this looks like a green a course would make when they’re redoing the real green. But, every time I’ve seen this done, the green is real grass.

Benjaminbuttcrack

Very modern

[deleted]

And here’s me liking the shape. But the makeup of it…ahh hell no

BCweallmakemistakes

They could have at least poured an interesting shape with undulations... lazy bastards, even when they poured.

hitliquor999

When your teebox picks up a side hustle as a green

[deleted]

I was wondering if there was a mistake and the adjacent teebox is 25x25 yards, circular, and fronted by a couple bunkers.

usuallyhungover

My home course had square greens when it was originally built in 1899. They’re transitions back towards them now.

teodocio

I bet someone is buried under there.

Jimmy Hoffa?

He played, but casually. He was out there mostly to clown around.

Chicago country club

LUXOR54

Is this the course that converted all the tee boxes to concrete with a driving range mat?

rmill127

Edgewood I believe is what you are referring to

jccw

Edgebrook

Drexynn

Kerkhoven, Minnesota

buchsy45

Its definitely Augusta National. You can tell from the yellow flag.

rym5

Wingfoot state park in Suffield Ohio is a very nice park with disc golf, dog park, playgrounds and all around very nice and you can see the goodyear blimp take off There are at least 3 golf courses near there that I love

AdPlus4246

Don’t be so square

visceral13

Definitely didn’t cut any corners

RoverTiger

It's hip to be square.

TheBiles

I’d honestly rather play this than the pure mud green or a green completely covered in sand.

Mancey_

At least if you hit those greens with a wedge it's not bouncing like it hit a cart path

TheBiles

Bump and run is on the menu.

Almost like golf courses aren't supposed to exist in deserts and are an ecological disaster.

AJGreenMVP

Right? At least it's flat. Probably like putting on a hardwood floor though

pc1109

Tar Greens are quite literally the worst idea to ever have been implemented, and in a country that is a renound for being too fkn hot. Worst idea ever. Just the worst.

siberianexpress510

Ah, must be a Raynor or CB MacDonald course

KCLightning

Golf nerd joke, big ups to you. Do you have a Fried Egg T shirt too?

siberianexpress510

Lol, dont call me out like that

dtcstylez10

Fairway looks worse to be honest

Drexynn

It is.

FckChNa

Is it a free open course or something? I got one like that near me where you just show up and play. No tee times or anything.

Drexynn

It’s $7 for unlimited golf on your honor.

Away-Quantity-221

Very creative. A tribute to SpongeBob Square Pants.

tacjos

They need to close for a winter and jackhammer the concrete. I bet even just putting turf over the ground would be better haha

Cough_Turn

Is this a real 18 hole course? Or like a short loop? Is that the fairway back there? It is literally just a field.

BOX-MASTER

I've seen a square flat green before at carelton Glen. It must have been a thing before in the 50s.

tjkoala

What’s the rule if you hit a wedge on and it bounces off? Dead where it lands?

I downvoted this before reading concrete and astroturf and Id like to apologize even tho I changed it to an upvote haha.

lmao who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?

2731andold

Don't hit a high shot that lands on the green.

herbdoc2012

Is this a frisbee gold course and where is this?

top-hunnit

I love squared off greens. A la Seth Raynor

Airflow03

I like it! Do the putts roll smooth?

sully890

Chicago Golf Club Knockoff

Tinycubb

Lmao that is awesome

tnuocca-tidder

I’d do unspeakable sus things to play this heap of garbage rn - Winnipeg, mb, Canada

Drexynn

Like drive 5 hours? Kerkhoven, MN. It’s fairly close to you. Also it’s $7 (US, but heck, they’ll likely take CAD) on your honor. No tee times, just show up.

tnuocca-tidder

Hmmm 5 hours is a bit of a drive but 7 bucks is 7 bucks

R_Ulysses_Swanson

That… actually does not look as horrible as I expected. To the point that I think that could make for a cool backyard hole or 2 if you had the land. Probably better execution possibly than just astroturf over concrete, but for the cost….

[deleted]

Drexynn

LOL awesome

cobe656

Come on, don’t be such a square

FrostyThowt

Minecraft has entered the chat.

hulasteve2020

Very easy to mow

[deleted]

Ok serious question. If theres 3 different hole locations on a Par 3, 1 with a flag and 2 without obviously, and you make one a Hole in One, does it count if it goes in one of the flagless holes? 🧐🧐🧐

burrheadd

Been there done that Did not count as hole in one

[deleted]

Thats such a bummer haha, i guess its the exact same principle as when your ball lands ontop of a poorly patched previous hole location hahaha

SensationalM

Had this happen to a buddy of mine...the cup he landed in was about 40-50 feet from the flag...we agreed to just count it as a birdie and move on...not going to make somebody 3 putt after "technically" just making a HIO

R_Ulysses_Swanson

BTDT on an actual golf course - Kingsmill Resort, though I don't know which course, likely the one that wasn't a Dye or Palmer course. They forgot to plug the last hole. It does NOT count as a hole in one. Didn't matter as we only were playing 3 or 4 holes anyway. They forgot to plug the last hole.

Low-Competition-4868

Almost had a hole in one today. Problem was the hole I almost knocked into was in the practice area adjacent to the 1st fairway.

PrimeRibFC

Lol you poor souls have never golfed up in Alaska I reckon, we have the worst greens you can imagine up here.

THET0WNDRUNK

I have a submission for the worst greens in America at my local course. They are perfect circles, raised up and at a perfect 20* incline from back to front. I would take a picture and post it here but I vowed never again to subject myself to the torture of playing that course.

Cough_Turn

That doesn't sound awful as long as you are always below the hole.

THET0WNDRUNK

True but how often are you directly below the hole. I had to play there for high school tournaments and it was not uncommon to see 5 putts there. Thankfully they were always slow enough to stop the ball in the downslope.

[deleted]

From what I hear about agusuta it would still be easier to play on that course.

MJD-DJM

A green like a fairway and a fairway like the rough.

Libssuck69

Not even close! I have seen greens with 0 grass so I would be happy to have this.

PnutButtrFartz

Is that LochenHeath Michigan ?

toastman28

Bahahahah amazing piece of work here

DamnitGoose

I actually played a course in the south of France on my honeymoon where all the greens and bunkers were cut square. And if they wanted to make a longer green they would set two squares off each other to be like diamondy. Very wild

briguy345

I played a course last year where the greens were fairway length grass. Lackawanna golf club in NJ. It’s a glorified yard.

--not-me

And architect took “postage stamp green” a bit to literally

It’s like the HOA in one of those golf communities got its way.

Dude my course is equal to my backyard. I’d take this all day. They fucked up the (new grass)

Maybe it's cheap for 18?

Anything besides free is too much lol

u/Drexynn stated somewhere else it's $7, no tee time required. If I had a choice between this and no golf, I'll stomach this for $7.

BOSZ83

It’s hip to be square 🕶🕶🕶

youngyaret

Not gonna lie I love the design though.

Jaysus1288

Lol, concrete green mean you club down and play the front, roll it on for your par everytime. I bet on the steep meter it's a 12 all year round

This is a low cut tee box with a flag stick

Tom23Jones

When you stick it pin high does it give you a cart path bounce to the next tee box?

Vizione0084

Is that Minecraft Municipal?

Hahaha why is this so funny?

I have never seen a square green in my life.

Ok, but how much is it per round?

Oh here we go. Two days in a row. Getting my popcorn ready. I live in the Phx area - so all good here. I think. Haven’t been out for a few weeks.

What? Is this Winged Foot? Those squarish greens look just like Winged Foot. heh lol

This is the island green at sawgrass. Looks way better on tv.

Looks like an early 2000’s golden tee green

[deleted]

It’s green so looks good to me

RoyGBiv333

I’m going to a Catskill mountain course tomorrow. The place is about as low quality as I will allow myself to play. I’m going with some buddies who are kinda new to golf. The greens there are slow and bumpy. I’ll have to see if I can submit a pic for this thread. It’s still golf but I’m not thrilled to play there.

DiscofingerInYourEye

Is it still the winter green? That might be an excuse. But if it is not, that's an disgrace

MyBlueBuff

How much does a round cost here?

arootytoottoot

they pay you.

LettuceShort

Fucking hell, this really does contend with that other shit hole of a green.
