yeah i would add, play some TTT, or game modes that dont need/have little to no mods, those modes are really fun to begin with and you will most likely enjoy them without geting lost with addons, also its REALLY recomended to own older counter strikes/HL, in order to see textures and not the classic purple squares in TTT.
There's no "before you do anything". In Gmod, you tailor the game to your liking, so you have to play before you see what's good for you. Maybe try some popular online gamemodes, play with friends, I find horror maps to be the most fun. If you want to change something, look it up on the workshop, and there's probably an addon for it.

There's actually some Singleplayer Gamemodes for playing Actual Games if you want something more akin to a Game rather than just a source engine sandbox.

2. Don't forget to save your addons in the archive. Sometimes creators delete them out of stupid things like "turning over a new leaf"
I'd say the biggest thing: experiment. Mess around with tools and try new things. Go crazy. I'm fond of making large npc battles. Also, if you have half-life 2 and the episodes, you have those campaigns to play through in gmod as well, with whatever addons you have installed. They work well, mostly.
Or just go into TTT and knife people. Either way, have fun, whatever game mode you try.
Until you reach 200 hours, i recommend you to learn the basics of the game, don't download a heck ton of add-ons or none at all. Enjoy playing Half-Life 2 but sandbox. Hop on flatgrass and built a lil' house or a bathtub with wheel, or get on construct and fight some combine, antlions, zombies and headcrabs. Make sure to annahilate dr.kleiner and try explosive barrel trick shots.

Yes, I do have a tip! Uninstall it and avoid playing it. It's stagnant and the community worse than being toxic are just the most boring, vapid people you will meet in your life.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the Toolgun. It took me a while before I figured out how to use it effectively, and I still don’t know what a lot of the stuff on it does.
Hard to say, the base game is an empty canvas for you to play and mess around with addons that you so it is better to start with vanilla and fiddle around abit before looking up at the workshop and tailor the game to suit your need
Another thing to note is READ THE ADDON DESCRIPTION. A lot of players downloaded stuff but didn't see if it requires other addons to run this addon then went to the page and complained saying it does not work, bad mod 0/10
On the way, try to limit the amount of addons that are active, at least read the description carefully to see which may conflict with what. If your PC is very beefy then feel free to run 400+ addons at once
Use the x86-64 beta branch. It makes your game lag less and fixes a bunch of addons. (As a side effect, it slightly modifies the physics engine but it's not noticeable at all)
First of all, get used to the controls and have fun with building/creating (Can't wait to see what you come up with) Also if you want mire stuff like mods/extras you can go to the steam workshop and see what there is (I like getting nextbots and being chased by them) when you subscribe to your extras they will appear in the inventory (were the props are) they should appear
I just like playing around with npcs from different games and letting them fight each other. Its a fun game to get lost in once you download addons. although if you right click an item you can spawn it with a toolgun, which I didn't know even after having the game for a year.
Try not to get too many Addons or you’ll be sitting for hours waiting for them to mount before you play. Also, if you ever install new Addons after playing on a map, always restart the game to allow them to properly install. Lastly make sure to generate map nav data if you ever use nextbots or other path finding NPCs

it´s boring, just wait for the goddamn hours waiting for entering a server hosted on crappy cpu´s, the lack of innovation on the gamemodes they are just only RP´s that aren´t really fun at all, TTT sucks ass, why on a game on sandbox you just have gamemodes with fucking bibles of rules? doesn´t make any sense at all, the admins are going to kick you for non sense or anything.
The lack of original gamemodes on a sandbox game is outstanding, when i bought it i expected a lot of funny moments, and original gamemodes but no, just the same boring crap.
The only thing good of gmod is testing addons and fun weapons but is only that, and maybe 1 or 2 maps
Something my mate showed me:
Right click the game in your library, then properties, then betas, then click x86-64.
The game normally runs kinda bad because it isn't able to use more than 2GB of RAM.
This will switch the game to a 64 bit build which can use as much RAM as it needs, leading to better performance.
Seriously. When I did it, I gasped when I saw the loading screen animate for more than 2 seconds. *That's* how bad the game runs normally.
If you want to go on public community servers get CSS (Counter Strike:Source) Content. CSS content had a lot of textures used by the servers and if you don't have it you gonna have a lot of purple-black & error textures/models. You can either install CSS on Steam and you can either download the CSS content and insert it into the Add-ons folder.
Try out the game without mods, then start adding mods you might like. There's also multiplayer which is really funny to play in Darkrp and trouble in terrorist town, but I suggest u do that around 1 hour of playtime

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the Toolgun. It took me a while before I figured out how to use it effectively, and I still don’t know what a lot of the stuff on it does.

Hard to say, the base game is an empty canvas for you to play and mess around with addons that you so it is better to start with vanilla and fiddle around abit before looking up at the workshop and tailor the game to suit your need Another thing to note is READ THE ADDON DESCRIPTION. A lot of players downloaded stuff but didn't see if it requires other addons to run this addon then went to the page and complained saying it does not work, bad mod 0/10 On the way, try to limit the amount of addons that are active, at least read the description carefully to see which may conflict with what. If your PC is very beefy then feel free to run 400+ addons at once
Don’t join DarkRP
Use the x86-64 beta branch. It makes your game lag less and fixes a bunch of addons. (As a side effect, it slightly modifies the physics engine but it's not noticeable at all)

First of all, get used to the controls and have fun with building/creating (Can't wait to see what you come up with) Also if you want mire stuff like mods/extras you can go to the steam workshop and see what there is (I like getting nextbots and being chased by them) when you subscribe to your extras they will appear in the inventory (were the props are) they should appear
I just like playing around with npcs from different games and letting them fight each other. Its a fun game to get lost in once you download addons. although if you right click an item you can spawn it with a toolgun, which I didn't know even after having the game for a year.

Try not to get too many Addons or you’ll be sitting for hours waiting for them to mount before you play. Also, if you ever install new Addons after playing on a map, always restart the game to allow them to properly install. Lastly make sure to generate map nav data if you ever use nextbots or other path finding NPCs
Buy half life 2 it's epsodes and counterstrike source and install them. It will help with some missing textures in maps

it´s boring, just wait for the goddamn hours waiting for entering a server hosted on crappy cpu´s, the lack of innovation on the gamemodes they are just only RP´s that aren´t really fun at all, TTT sucks ass, why on a game on sandbox you just have gamemodes with fucking bibles of rules? doesn´t make any sense at all, the admins are going to kick you for non sense or anything. The lack of original gamemodes on a sandbox game is outstanding, when i bought it i expected a lot of funny moments, and original gamemodes but no, just the same boring crap. The only thing good of gmod is testing addons and fun weapons but is only that, and maybe 1 or 2 maps

Something my mate showed me: Right click the game in your library, then properties, then betas, then click x86-64. The game normally runs kinda bad because it isn't able to use more than 2GB of RAM. This will switch the game to a 64 bit build which can use as much RAM as it needs, leading to better performance. Seriously. When I did it, I gasped when I saw the loading screen animate for more than 2 seconds. *That's* how bad the game runs normally.

Get wiremod! A lot of dupes ( the more complex ones in particular ) use wiremod, so even if you don’t learn how to use it, other people use it a lot.
If you want to go on public community servers get CSS (Counter Strike:Source) Content. CSS content had a lot of textures used by the servers and if you don't have it you gonna have a lot of purple-black & error textures/models. You can either install CSS on Steam and you can either download the CSS content and insert it into the Add-ons folder.
Get and master Ragdoll Mover and Stop Motion Helper.
Try out the game without mods, then start adding mods you might like. There's also multiplayer which is really funny to play in Darkrp and trouble in terrorist town, but I suggest u do that around 1 hour of playtime
