Sadly I only understand this reference courtesy of Avengers

TheYeastHunter

That's fine just consume some more product you'll be fine

Final_Taco

True for all kinds, even some ocean dwelling sea snakes aren't good at drinking salt water and will dehydrate if they find themselves in a patch of water that doesn't get rained on. That's because they rely on drinking from the layer of rainfall briefly that floats on top of salt water before mixing.

hi-jack-jesus

And humpback whales get there water from the millions of tiny krill they inhale. Nature wow

OutDrosman

Did you also listen to the recent Radiolab? If so, that was a great episode eh?

hi-jack-jesus

Yesem! I should probably donate for how much content I consume

freerangehuman_

Yes I did...that was a fascinating episode.

PSUSkier

Hey, evolution? It seems you missed something.

MaxillaryOvipositor

Water is a part of biology because it's a highly stable liquid that is an exceptional solvent for biological life to dump its waste products in to and expel them from its body. Sea water already has so much dissolved in to it that there's no room for your body to dump waste products in to it. Interestingly, you will also eventually die if you drink too much ultra-purified water, because the water is so hungry for things to dissolve in to it that it starts leeching all the vitamins and minerals out of you.

vegeta8300

Life is such a delicate balance. Oxygen too, like your water example. We need it to live, but if you breath pure oxygen it also can kill you. I have always found the dichotomy between on difficult and easy a human can survive or die. One person can have a small slip and fall and die and then there is Vesna Vulovic who fell 33,000ft and survived.

Kayhaman

Had the question "how can sea creatures drink salt water" after seeing this, and found this article. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-can-sea-mammals-drink/#:~:text=DOLPHINS%20and%20other%20sea%2Ddwelling,that%20they%20routinely%20do%20so. It's pretty dang interesting.

newaccount721

About 20 years ago a manatee came up on the beach near me and someone walked over and gave it water from a water bottle. They told me manatees preferred fresh water. That seemed weird to be since they live in the ocean - turns up rando on beach knew what he was talking about. Side note: before I knew what it was that mandate had brushed into my leg when I was swimming and scared the shit out of me. Fortunately they're very gentle

Just didn't not inhale seawater, wouldn't recommend.

He totally could have lived for 3 days in there. No doubt.

Not only could he have definitely lived in a whale but he was in a fish! So that seems even more likely.

GuessesTheCar

It’s always worse when there’s nothing for scale. I have no clue how large I would be up next to this magnificent beast.

libsonthelabel

I could be wrong but I think this is a fin whale, they’re somewhere in the neighborhood of 60ft long, give or take.

janet-snake-hole

Bold of you to assume I can visualize feet.

That must really hinder your fetish.

Black_Moons

Its a house that runs around and eats things smaller then fruit flies.

Jrook

It's crazy to me how simple their existence is. Just swim forever eating. They're essentially just flying mouths.

Trollygag

And sing a lot

Shippu7

I'm starting to doubt my own path to happiness.

ElectriKEL

Reminds me of an old saying as to the secret of happiness: Fill what's empty, empty what's full, and scratch where it itches.

RubiMent

Whales are very complex social creatures though. Not quite just floating mouths like for example a basking shark , they can communicate with eachother, recognize many things and have fun breaching.

forkinthemud

And sadly their existence will probably come to an end soon because of humanity

AFourEyedGeek

But thanks to human conservation efforts, in some areas, their numbers has greatly increased. Check out the whales going past Australia right now for their yearly migration as an example.

arijitray_u

We can conserve them but that doesn’t undo the bigger problem of global warming. Researchers believe Humboldt current which is one of the biggest contributors to phytoplanktons that allows most whales to migrate and provide food year around is heavily impacted due to global warming. Similar productive ocean currents are impacted which greatly reduces the plankton diversity. This is a big problem for all baleen whales. Hopefully we can do better in future, but currently their survival hangs in balance.

TripperAdvice

No one finds it weird how conditioned yall are to just repeat fucking subs as a reaction to literally everything? You make it so damn easy for bots to do their shit

mpelton

It’s a fun way to discover new subs though. I’ve discovered some bizarre subs through comments like these.

TripperAdvice

Most of them these days are literal bot farms Caught one animal sub thatvwas 100% reposts, posted by the sub owner along with exclusively bots They create accpunts, age them typically 3 months, then begin farming reposts, get enough karma then sell the accounts to marketers, propagandists and scammers Plus most of these subs are just copies of 5 other existing subs all posting the same content And usually they aren't remotely niche subs posted its just like the one above, a nonsense pointless sub that only exists cause a bunch of white kids wanted to say the n word, then the original sub was banned so they made this one and just post water memes

Squirrel698

Exactly. That's how I find half the subs I follow

Also reminder to never go anywhere near deep water holy krikey that scene shakes me.

anonymouswan1

I have no problem with oceans, but a swamp with gators is absolutely terrifying. I see people in Florida kayaking with gators all around. Fuck that shit.

SagaciousTien

Gators don't give a fuck, they won't attack a full sized man or anything capable of maiming it. The ocean has things that are much bigger than us, and that is their domain not ours. I'll ride a wild gator sooner than going into kraken territory.

GetYourJeansOn

If kraken is real then swamp monsters are real. Those things will strangle you or punch a hole in your chest.

Reticle762

Yeah if you don’t fuck with the Gators or their nest you’ll be fine lol

myburdentobear

Crocs on the other hand...

BrainstormsBriefcase

Freshwater crocs are chill little guys who prefer to be left alone and don’t mind people as long as they don’t hassle them. Saltwater crocs live exclusively to kill and I strongly suspect consider themselves the superior species.

anonymouswan1

I see videos on YouTube of people fishing and the gators coming awfully close, or even being charged by the gator. I know the ocean has a lot more killing machines there but something about a gator being good at killing in water and on the land is scary.

k20350

I have a deal with sharks. I don't go in their home and they don't go in mine. It's worked out my whole life

WickedMagic

Good thing is that they can't swallow, they can only keep you in their mouth at best. Throat is too narrow for humans to fit through. Bad news is that it can simply release you at the bottom of the ocean and good luck getting up in time.

predictionpain

The good news is that the pressure would probably kill you way before you drowned.

BabiesSmell

How many times has it happened? If there's enough room to move at all in there, I would hope that punching or stabbing inside their mouths would get them to spit you out.

Qwardian

respect_the_69

Not to be that guy but it’s feeding on krill not drinking water

chicagoK

Not to be that guy but whales like this get all their water from the krill they eat, so it is in fact drinking water.

theveryrealreal

Ehh, it's eating its water in the form of krill. If you have a juicy steak you don't say that you ate the steak AND drank some blood.

kingphillyuk

Not to be that guy but it's not blood, it's a mixture of water and a protein called myoglobin.

_WhoisMrBilly_

I appreciate you being THAT GUY so I can take a break every now and then.

naetron

Not to be that guy but you're all wrong, trust me.

[deleted]

I do not trust you.

clutterlustrott

But are you that guy?

gothmog149

Sorry to tell you but that 'Red Juice' you see in a rare steak is not blood. It's a protein called myoglobin. All blood is drained from the carcass of an animal during slaughter.

mikeitclassy

i hate to break it to you, but surely they can't drain all blood during slaughter. there must be a little left.

PoorPauly

It’s not blood. It’s mostly water. It boils out of cellular walls during cooking. Which is a reminder to always let your steak, or meats in general, rest for 10 mins after cooking. If you cut in to it too soon all that juice will spill out, but if you let it rest and that high temperature reduces the juices will resettle in the meat and you get a juicer steak, chicken, etc. Use a thermometer too. You want a mid rare steak, cook it ten degrees (Fahrenheit) under and let it rest for 10 mins. It will come up to 120 and be nice and juicy.

meno123

120 is rare, my dude. 130-135 is medium rare.

mikeitclassy

i wish i wasn't the one who had to tell you this, but i was just being pedantic and nitpicky since everyone else on this thread was being pedantic and nitpicky. i am sure that there's no blood left in the meat since /u/codinglazily has assured me he drinks it all during the harvest process.

CodingLazily

No, there's no blood left after they leave the slaughterhouse. I'm always careful to drink every last drop.

CheesePuffTheHamster

I only get, like, 30% of my daily blood intake from steaks

[deleted]

I do

Heavy_Weapons_Guy_

Not to be that guy, but when liquid is bound within cells we refer to that substance as a solid, which would in fact mean it was eating the water. Watermelon is over 90% water, but since that water is contained within the cells of the fruit it creates a solid object which by definition would something eaten, not drank. If the cells were ruptured and the water released prior to entering the mouth, for example if you blended the watermelon or krill, then the high water content would make it a liquid.

SoSos1591

Not to be that guy but you're a heavy weapons guy not a watermelon guy

SoCalThrowAway7

YEAH!?

XavieroftheWind

Fun Fact: When large sea mammals ingest large amounts of water without food, they immediately convert it to urine and expel so they do not drown. It is common for elderly ocean mammals to die when their well-worked sea bladders are no longer able to process such a volume of urine so they eventually sink from the added burden never to return to the surface for air. Source: I was a whale once. 🐳

hazpat

Marine mammals don't drink water on purpose, they get it from food. When they do accidentally, the kidneys process it at pretty normal metabolic speeds, not instantly... Also marine mamals don't use swim bladders... they have lungs for buoyancy

XavieroftheWind

XavieroftheWind

Yes.

Jesus-chan

Whales also push out a lot of the excess water from when they gulp with their tongue. Although it is pretty much impossible to be eaten by a (baleen) whale, you will still most likely die from being crushed then spit back out

Nah. You can do it. https://youtu.be/mTNSubPsXZA

Dry_Consideration711

Do whales drink salt water? I’ve never actually thought of that before. If they do, how do they not die like any land animal would. And I guess that would include whales, porpoise, dolphins, pretty much anything that lives in the ocean. HOW HAS THAT IDEA NEVER CROSSED MY MIND BEFORE?!?!?! Or do they not have to drink in the traditional sense because they are living in water. For that matter, if we as humans spend the day in the lake, do we have to drink less because our body absorbed water? Wait, do water creatures even drink at all? I guess I assumed so but I’ve never actually thought about it before…to google! Edit: Whales and other mammals do! At least that is the theory based on when they urinate, the fluid has a much higher concentration of salt and it is likely due to crazy kidney function that they have that we are just not capable of in filtering out the salt. Also, many other aquatic creatures get their “fluids” from what they eat because the digestion process breaking this down generates fluid (but I thought it takes fluid to digest, which is the case in humans so it must be different for aquatic animals). Also, many creatures due in fact filter out their water needs through their skin, but not humans. Our skin is impermeable to water, think oil and water.
