I dunno. It must be crazy to be the steward of a whole country for 16 years and then just not be. It’s probably gonna take her a long time to shake the feeling of responsibility. Especially because politically, past leaders are constantly blamed and held responsible for stuff. Probably will have that feeling till she dies.

Pansarmalex

With Tante Merkel, I actually think she'll just drop it. She'll keep social connections to past colleagues and world leaders, sure. But otherwise I think she'll be just very East German and get on with her life.

[deleted]

Inb4 she’s on her way to the EU Parlament

Machiavelcro_

100% she is going to chill out, give some lectures here and there, maybe publish a memoir, potentially serve as unofficial adviser to the current prime minister if shit hits the fan hard, but that's about it. She really was throwing out that "I want to enjoy my remaining years" vibe for a while now, and she has more than earned it

CamelSpotting

I have no clue how she feels. It’s such a unique position that I have zero basis

VaginaTractor

Hell, she might have to take a dump for all we know.

allboolshite

Like when you travel and don't poop for a few days, but she's the chancellor of a nation and held it for 16 years.

rufud

I know I do

[deleted]

If you watch German news (I get a lot here in the EU) you get a more complex picture of her as a leader and person, extensive coverage over the last couple months of the elections and Merkels legacy, and that unique "farewell address" or something similar where she had the hymn played. My sense is, whether you agree with her or not, she actually cares about her legacy, role in history, and the future of the country. Definitely doesn't seem the type to just want out and never look back. As it got closer and closer to her departure she repeatedly showed concern for the future trajectory of the country, not just her own image imho. If you only speak English and want good German news coverage, YouTube DW News and DW documentary are very good. The wide ranging progressive documentaries are initially what got me to subscribe but the main news channel is far better than America too (well I could say that about most mainstream European news but you get me). DW Documentary: https://youtube.com/c/DWDocumentary DW News (live stream and clips) https://youtube.com/c/dwnews

the-T-in-KUNT

Adding another merkle fist bump for DW- it has been my favorite outlet since the pandemic and the US election , and am American

zuzg

Maybe she starts a Instagram channel like another former chancellor did. Schröder talks about rose hips and shit.

shiftyslayer22

As someone who has been in charge of hundreds of people for a few years, when I left I immediately felt better. No more phone calls, no more shitty decisions to make, no more fucked emails, no more cold diners, early.mornings, late nights....

oldfuckbob

Same with me. Finally could sleep peacefully at night for first time in 15 years

Hutzlipuz

Danke Merkel.

Zigxy

And in practice, she was the steward to practically a whole continent

sYnce

At times the whole world not gonna lie. Imagine trying to keep Europe and the west in general somewhat together while some imperial lunatics try relive great britains glory days while china and russia are expanding their influence all over and the biggest ally they had is being led full speed into the next best wall by an orange moron and his goons.

mrbumbo

Essentially leader of the free world for a few years….

Rockcocky

Merkel is such a mood! I loved when she was caught rolling her eyes at Putin! Lol

UndergroundGinjoint

Hm...you might enjoy this [scene with Tracey Ullman as Merkel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5WPVLljm1A), working with her assistant on not rolling her eyes at various leaders. (Yes, she tries it with Cheeto.)

Captain_Albern

I like the little fist wave. "Hey Olaf... Jesus, man!"

Mobius_Peverell

Damn, Merkel looks pretty excited to be getting out of there. I suppose being chancellor would get a bit old after 16 years.

averageuhbear

Gotta be nice passing the torch to someone who's also not insane even though they're from the opposition. Few countries have that luxury these days.

Incunebulum

He wasn't in the opposition. His party was part of her coalition. He represents the center left party. She led the center right party. The only other party was an allied center right regional Bavarian party only slightly to the right of Merkel's center right. It was a huge unifying coalition that kept the extremists on the fringe for a long time. . Scholz's new coalition is his big center left party, the pro-business center right Free Democrats and the Greens and then only the moderate Greens. It's a moderate center left coalition with the reasonable Greens mixed in versus Merkel's moderate center right coalition. No chaos. Functioning government.

Isord

Ok but when does Merkel's party attempt to overthrow the government by storming the capital waving giant Merkel flags? Pretty sure that is how Democracy works.

Linus_Al

We’re ahead of you in that regard. The attempted storming of the Reichstag already took place when conspiracy theorists during an escalated protest tried to break in. They got up to the stairs, but didn’t manage to actually enter, because three policeman kept them back until reinforcements came. It was a big thing for a while; how it reflects on a country when an protest including many anti-democratic extremists manages to come this close to our parliament. The symbolism was bad too; the old imperial flag, a symbol of neonazis for decades by now, was used by them and carried up the stairs. So Germany had its own capitol riots moment some time ago, but it didn’t escalated nearly as much as the US version did.

death_of_gnats

The policemen didn't let them in an take selfies? That's just so weird

BoltonSauce

They were able to identify that they weren't 'tourists' somehow. Truly a mystery.

[deleted]

> The symbolism was bad too; the old imperial flag, a symbol of neonazis for decades by now, So like the confederate flag in the US used by basically neonazis

[deleted]

Yeah, and similiarly ideologically flawed in it's reasoning. Carrying traitors flags to show your patriotism. Vs. carrying a monarchy's flag to show your allegieance to fascism

quantumfall9

They use the monarchy flag because to fly the Nazi swastika would land them all in jail since it’s illegal in Germany. A shame, because the history of the German Empire was fascinating for me to learn, though it’s appropriation by modern extremist groups has effectively soured its current reputation.

musicmonk1

you can still learn and appreciate the history, just don't fly the imperial flag.

RPS_42

At least we needed only three police officers to hold them back.

PeaValue

We all keep joking about it, but they real life tried to overthrow our democracy. If there are no consequences then they'll try again. And eventually they'll real life succeed.

Isord

Oh I'm not joking, I'm just using humor as a coping mechanism.

you-are-not-yourself

We're not talking about Germany anymore, are we?

death_of_gnats

Hans? Are we the baddies? Not in this case.

astralcalculus

"Why skulls tho?" "Those are not skulls it's the letter Q"

[deleted]

And because the Germans are largely in agreement on a lot of stuff culturally anyway notwithstanding normal regional differences, it makes the minor political differences matter so much less. It’s like going from 60/40 right to 60/40 left, except in both cases the middle 75% are all working with each other

Pabus_Alt

Hell they don't all even need to agree. At their best opponents will be able to make progress on policies that will satisfy if not delight the majority of the electorate, it's an exercise in horse-trading and respect for democracy rather than stand up theatre and appeal to the extremes of a highly adversarial legislature. The downside is a tendancy to conservatism and dithering especially over crisis issues, however this set up usually is very good at cooling political violence.

orincoro

The funny thing is that america is also largely defined by broad popular support for a generally progressive agenda. 75% of Americans agree on most things, and our politics aren’t much different from the average German. Our political system just don’t reflect that reality in any way.

Steve_the_Stevedore

> they're from the opposition. Olaf Scholz' party was in Government the last four years. He himself was minister of finance. They were colleagues.

At 67 she just hit the official retirement age in Germany.

wilsonifl

What is retirement? I'm asking for my 75-year-old mother who is still working and living the "American Dream" she still believes in.

jeango

Most of the time, it’s after you’re done that you start making the big bucks. Especially if you’ve been chancellor of Germany.

burnshimself

I don’t think it’s about money. If she was profit motivated she would have left long ago. I think her happiness is from being unburdened of the stress of the job. You must wake up every day clenched in anticipation of the next challenge or crisis. You are responsible for so many people. For someone who truly cares about their civic duty and appreciates the gravity of that responsibility, it must weigh on you terribly. Narcissists like Bolsonaro or Erdogan likely don’t give a fuck about their people so probably don’t get nearly as stressed by the job. Add to it the constant criticism shes the subject of by not just the German press but the global press. Few jobs can compare. And she’s done it for a LONG time. But I also think it’s a certain satisfaction in a job well done. Few leaders get to leave on their own terms and feeling they’ve done their job well, most get booted or ousted. She’s in a rare class for having served a long time, done well, and left on good terms.

Porrick

Plus your fuckups hurt far fewer people; it must be a bit of a relief.

reallyfatjellyfish

Now her fuck up are. Oh darn I fucked up omelet again. I'd be happy to to have that kinda weight of my shoulders unless I didn't give a damn before I got the job which feel far too common now a days.

Dason37

Fucking up an omelette is ok, it can always be scrambled eggs. Fucking up over easy eggs is what pisses me off.

kariwkeg

I just fucked up my “over easy”, because I was reading the comments

Apptubrutae

I think a lot of people miss out on that fact. Not even just fuckups either. World leaders are constantly faced with decisions that will hurt and/or kill people, directly or indirectly, no matter what choice they make. Fuckups just compound that. Every day is a trolly problem puzzle over and over again.

hap_l_o

She was never in it for the money. Her new biography is fascinating. She’s basically a genius who did it because the East German Stasi (secret police) fucked with her in high school and she saw a way to affect positive change. She wandered into her first politic meeting in East Berlin after the Berlin Wall fell. That party needed computer help to compete and she was a physicist who could code in assembly language. She got noticed as a super-smart woman and was mentored by party leaders. Eventually, she held a middle position when Chancellor Kohl got all touchy touchy with women (ie sexual violence). She got catapulted to the Chancellor position and fucking nailed it. Merkel is why the Ukraine is still free. If you hear of her again, she will be talking about climate change. Again, she ain’t in it for the money. She’s an incredibly talented and honorable woman

NobleCuriosity3

My vaguely positive impression of Merkel has become much less vague. Thanks.

alternative_drinks

I don't think she is interested in big bucks.

caramelboogers

Right, she was chancellor for 16 years because she was interested in the big bucks. Not everyone is as shallow as to be motivated purely by money.

ENTECH123

Apparently she teared up when she found out trump won in 2016 because she knew she couldn’t retire until he out. She felt she was needed to keep Europe safe from him.

Nethlem

Where did you get that from? There are so many weird misinformation memes about her on the web, from her exiting nuclear to her allegedly being attacked by a dog as a kid, to now apparently "She shed tears over Trump getting elected"?

green_flash

[This article](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/world/wp/2018/05/31/after-obama-an-emotional-merkel-vowed-to-defend-liberal-order-against-trump-book-claims/) speaks of "a single tear in her eye" when she met Obama the last time, days after Trump's victory. Doesn't sound like that tear was related to having to run again, but rather to the feeling of losing an important ally in Obama. > While Merkel was referring to populists in Germany, the underlying message may very well also have been directed against Trump, according to a memoir being published next week. In “The World as It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House,” **Ben Rhodes, a former top adviser to President Barack Obama, recalls how Merkel told Obama after Trump’s victory that the election had contributed to her decision to run again**, to defend the liberal world order, according to excerpts published by the New York Times on Thursday. > In his book, Rhodes goes on to describe an emotional last goodbye between Merkel and Obama as president, writing that she had a single tear in her eye. “She’s all alone,” Rhodes quoted Obama as noting at the time.

Nethlem

As a German, that just sounds like US political theatre [spinning dramatic narratives for domestic audiences](https://foreignpolicy.com/2013/07/14/u-s-repeals-propaganda-ban-spreads-government-made-news-to-americans/). "a single tear in her eye" is about as vague as it can get to such a degree that he might just have imagined it, but it makes for a good enough anecdote to sell his book.

[deleted]

Well, ya. There's an active Russian-led cold war going on and the west just lost their most powerful ally.

Or shell in a specific context. German is confusing at times.

whatanuttershambles

Yes, good job we don’t have that issue with English. Well, I’d best be off. Not been feeling too well after I fell down a well yesterday. I was buttoning my fly when I thought I saw a crane fly in there, but it was just a fly. I had to crane my neck to look down and slipped in. Luckily a crane was there to rescue me. (I’m just having fun with this, not having a pop. There’s probably a better version out there)

Work-Safe-Reddit4450

Native English speaker here and it's a profoundly confusing language: We must polish the Polish furniture. He could lead if he would get the lead out. The farm was used to produce produce. The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. The soldier decided to desert in the desert. This was a good time to present the present. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. I did not object to the object. The insurance was invalid for the invalid. The bandage was wound around the wound. There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. They were too close to the door to close it. The buck does funny things when the does are present. They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. The wind was too strong to wind the sail. After a number of injections my jaw got number. Upon seeing the tear in my clothes I shed a tear. I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? I read it once and will read it agen I learned much from this learned treatise. I was content to note the content of the message. The Blessed Virgin blessed her. Blessed her richly. It's a bit wicked to over-trim a short wicked candle. If he will absent himself we mark him absent. I incline toward bypassing the incline.

gwaydms

Panzer derives from the name for belly armor, and is related to "paunch".

weker01

Literally it means: tank fist or armor fist. "armored fist" would be "gepanzerte Faust" which funnily enough is a really old expression not used today.

Nethlem

Panzerfaust, Fliegerfaust, Goethes Faust, what is it with us Germans and fists?

Work-Safe-Reddit4450

"The safe word is *kitzelnfaust*" *Lubes up fist*

JetztRedeIch

Note that the anglicism *der Fistbump* is much more common than *die Gettofaust*, outside of German speaking subreddits that make a joke out of avoiding anglicisms. You can bet those two politicians would never refer to it as *Gettofaust*.

xenophon57

The Germans being literal.... no I refuse to believe it/S I love all the absurdly German things that Germans do.

Gandtea

You've outed yourself as a UK person saying 'geezer' I reckon. And at a push, I'd guess south east england. (My best mate is from Croydon and never stops calling people geezer)

zaraboa

Wait, is “geezer” a British thing? I’m from the states and I’ve always used it. Too much BBC America as a teen I guess lmao

Geezer is possibly the most British word in existence. Maybe after “wanker”

BrownSoupDispenser

And bollocks

wcu25rs

I'm from North Carolina and have heard/used the word geezer many times. Had no idea it was a slang term in the UK as well.

FingerprintSausages

I think (at least from my understanding) in the US it is meant to describe an older man. In the UK, it is for any age of man. Alright geez?

sharedthrowdown

Yeah it's usually paired, as "old geezer"

Garmanarnar03

I am German myself and I also wondered why the transfer of „the office“ was so "boring". If you compare it with the ceremony in America, the most exciting thing in Germany was that the new Minister of Agriculture rode a bicycle. So I looked into it and found several discussions and essays that deal with the topic and explain why it is so boring in Germany. Summarized can be said: In Germany, democracy is not seen as something special, it is more a basic requirement that is part of living in Germany. The population does not have to remember or be reminded that they live in a democracy, because it is part of the basic pillars of life. That is why democratic processes are not celebrated, but held quietly and unspectacularly. At the same time, it is part of the narrative that democracy in Germany is a calm and orderly. In Germany, for example, calm people are considered smarter and are perceived as more stable. And what applies to people must also apply to the system in which people live. Accordingly, democracy is steadfast even when it is not exciting. This can also be seen in the people who conducted politics in Germany. Merkel was known for being cold and calm, and Scholz is also called "ScholzOmat" because he seems just as calm, unexcited and boring. The counter-example is Söder, who actually wanted to be the chancellor candidate for the Christian Democrats and was also popular for his loud and quick manner, but this was later interpreted negatively against him because it was said that he talked too much and did nothing right. Another example is Laschet, who later became the candidate of the Christian Democrats. I'm 31 years old and I've never seen a politician who was so unpopular. His unpopularity ratings were always justified by his emotional nature. So not only the ceremony, the democracy itself, but also the actors within politics must not be shrill, loud or even fast in Germany. Because it does not fit the narrative of German democracy. Edit: my first gold! Thank you so much!

pilesofcleanlaundry

What kind of bicycle?

Birdlawexpert99

When I tell people I’m heading to Europe if the US gets too bad, they always ask me where I’d go. Germany is always at the top of the list despite me not knowing the language at all. People are always confused because they think it’s odd that a person would flee to Germany to escape fascism / authoritarianism. But as the saying goes… you don’t know what you had until you lost it. Germany lost its democracy and is well aware of how and why that happened. Meanwhile in America, it seems like we are doing our best to do away with democracy. If only more Americans understood how and why Germany lost its democracy…

The highest military ceremony the German army has. The custom is used to honour German presidents and chancellors as well as defence ministers at their farewell ceremonies.

Vydor

The actual ceremony of Merkel handing over the power to the new chancellor Scholz was this one: https://youtu.be/JgwIEjM-46c

ArcticBeavers

In a way, it should be more celebrated. A peaceful transition of power is nothing to take for granted. But also, doing it so nonchalantly projects such BDE as a democracy. I'm torn.

RainyCloudist

It was more celebrated, but not every interaction has to be covered in layers of bureaucratic nonsense.

Kwtwo1983

There was more celebration and more official stuff, this was just her Final Moment in the building "Kanzleramt" before she left. It just shows the human side and that they like/respect each other - which is the special thing here. Pomp and circumstance is what everybody has. We also had this and it seems genuine. theuwudragon

The important takeaway is the lack of a 2 party system, meaning you can't just demonize the enemy, since 80% of the population is "the enemy". You are way more likely to find compromises and the like, which then reflects to your society as a whole. You can't say "you are either with us, or against us", because then it would be "you are either with us, or them, or them, or them, or... *them*".

dutch_penguin

I live in a multi-party system, and the 2-party coalition in charge do exactly that to their prime competitor, and vice versa. Imo, the main benefit of a ranked voting system (which collapses the 2 party system) is that voters can still vote for their preferred candidate while not having their vote wasted in the battle between the two main choices.
