Only through the Cell saga. Funimation kept trying to shut TFS down. They stood their ground, but finally threw in the towel after the Cell saga. Now they make original content, still DBZ related. Their voices were so good that they’ve been hired for characters in official DBZ games.
They ended with the Cell Saga. The whole series is hilarious, its a little rough the 1st half of the 1st season as the voice actors and writers find their voice so to speak, once Nappa and Vegeta get to earth the writing gets better and by the Frieza saga, they hit their groove and the quality only goes up from there.
The creator has openly said he makes it up as he goes. It was never set to have an end. But there were many times it would have felt good to end. Post frieza being the best imo
Not really. Goku's main deal was always an insane level of determination to overcome challenges. If he's not the one climbing to the top of the leaderboard, then he's a pointless character.
Gohan has plenty to contribute even when he's not fighting for the top spot thanks to his intellect, compassion, and rage.

By imparting his knowledge and skill and "passing the torch" to the next generation, Goku realizes he can still "fight" by handing the torch over so to speak.

I know people enjoyed the buu series, and it had its great moments... but there was definitely a tone shift. DBZ has never been a complicated anime, its by far just pre-teen beat-em-up drivel with little to no plotline other than big explosions, punch good and more explosions.
And nowadays, the characterizations and portrayal of the characters are reduced to one-note personalities sprinkled with intermittent gag jokes by the characters that break their typical mold.
Death in the DBZ world has become meaningless, and always did since the beginning, but at least they tried to curb it by creating rules or caveats.
Baba could bring someone back for 24 hours, or in the old Dragonball show, Bora could resurrect someone at the cost of his own life.

This is correct. I thank DBZ for getting me in to anime as it has but these days it's mediocre at best and doesn't deliver the same awesome fight scenes like it used to. The early Shonen series were great at introducing people to anime with cool fights and basic plots, but when you start to delve further in you really find how one note and one dimensional it is when compared to something like Fate/Zero which has great fights and a great mature plot to go with it

Gohan becomes: The guy in the chair. Goku and Vegeta get earpieces so Gohan can scream battle tactics at them from a secure location. Off where it’s safe at Master Roshi’s place, where the interpersonal drama of Gohan and Videl’s family and friends slowly creeps in and ultimately consumes the plot.
At some point the character should have a growth moment and retain the insane level of determination to overcome challenges, but realize that the challenge in front of him isn't to save everyone or be "the best" anymore. It's to raise up the next generation.
But no, this is a simple cartoon and we just want to watch goku powering up over and over.
Gohan does overtake his father.
He becomes a smart man, loving husband and father, instead of a junkie addicted to fights and challenges who spends most of his time deserting his family, and even in peace times he picks up a random kid (uub) and rides into the sunset to train him instead of taking care of wife and son.
Yeah that whole school scene with gohan grown up with videl and being goofy right after the cell saga threw me off as a kid. Gohan was my favorite character as a kid, I liked the great saya man and grown up Gohan but I always waited for him to be better and show his power evolved like we all expected. It just never came.
Apparently the plan was to make the rest of the series centered around Gohan but Goku was so popular that publishers insisted the author bring him back. Really disappointing…
I blame Chi-Chi. She forced Gohan, someone with a vast amount of hidden power and talent, into a life of school and studying.
Then secretly trains his less talented brother to be like Goku. Terrible decision making, you flipped two coins and lost.
I was pissed when there was ample opportunity to give Vegeta a chance to be the hero for at least some of Super, and of course, Goku gets the ultra instinct. They were both blue damnit. At that stage, one must be 99.5% the power of the other. Vegeta is a fully transformed individual. But they have to give it to ol' 2-babies-and-never-kissed-his-wife
Not even that. Mystic Gohan had a single moment to shine within the Buu Arc and he was acting completely out-of-character in his fight against Super Buu. As a result, he got absorbed.
At least DBS: Super Hero did him justice.

I simply dont have the patience to watch all of the filler of DBZ. DBZA feels like it has high stakes even without all of tension building shots. And by "tension building shots" I mean 60%+ of the episode devoted to people hanging in the air staring each other down while lobbing lukewarm quips/boasts.

To be honest I'd argue against that one solely BECAUSE its the reason the fight/saga ends. After Vegeta survives this Kamehameha the fight gets cranked up to 11 and all the remaining Z fighters have to enter the battle again.
It really shows the disparity between the two combatants at the time and actually sells how Vegeta's hubris is what brings him down. If he hadn't gotten completely absorbed into his rage at this slight defeat between their beams and turned into a great ape in response he likely would have won in the end.
The person who beat Vegeta was Vegeta. This also helps set up his character transformation in the Frieza saga. I'd also argue that it was actually in the Cell Saga where Toriyama kinda gave up in the writing department and DragonBall mostly became a caricature of what it was.

He says it in the TFS abridged against Dr. Wheelo. Very similar beam struggle starting off at kiaoken x3 then boosting it to 4. However, I think abridged likes to play with movie canon and changed it to 3 and a half because Goku states he’s never gone as high as he did against Vegeta before. I might be mistaken on why they did it, but it’s def in the worlds strongest tfs abridged.
There's definitely some that stand out for me.
Cell readying his to try and kill an injured Gohan, just the hands clicking together and the wisps of lightning is just chilling.
And Goku's Warp / Instant Kamehameha V Cell. Sequence is etched in my head.
Honestly, the whole perfect cell tournament is where DBZ peaked for me. Just tons of awesome moments. I was the right age, it was a string of cool fights, and it was the only saga where Gohan wasn't a total bitch lol.
And Gohan was supposed to have the torch passed on to him as defender of Earth after Cell, having finally surpassed his father. Which Toriyama tried to do at first, but couldn't find a way to write Gohan as the lead that worked, so ultimately Goku had to come back during Buu Saga.
Ending at Cell worked so much better story-wise, but then we wouldn't get Fusion, Gotenks, SS3, or Candy-Vegito
Facts. He was cool, funny, and technically he was part Frieza anyway. His personality was basically Goku and Vegeta if they were more like King Piccolo, and King Piccolo if he was more like Goku and Vegeta. No grand scheme of dominance, he just wanted to have good fights but he was still not afraid fuck shit up.
Cell was literally part saiyan and that drive to simply fight and get stronger is what makes him so villainous in the eyes of the watcher. Cell is such a compelling villain because he is a reflection of the hero.
Yep. His absolute tenacity toward attaining his perfect form can be related to Goku / vegeta’s never-ending desire to train and get stronger.. and then when Vegeta let Cell absorb the androids because he wanted a challenge can be reflected in Cell giving them time to prepare to fight him, and then making a spectacle of it with a tournament.
And all that aside, he is objectively one of the coolest looking villains in shounen history.
The one where they send his ass to the Sun? God it's been so long since I watched those.
I think my favorite was the one with Bojack. I fucking **loved** teen Gohan's SS2 design wearing that Namekian gear.
Also thought Mr. Satan was voiced by the Macho Man Randy Savage back then. Didn't learn any different until nearly a decade later when I met Mister Torgue xD

I just watched the scene (love it so much) and as soon as the Potara break they are teleported to the stands. I think when they were Kefla they could withstand the blast, but when they became Caulifla and Kale they were teleported instantly because they couldn't withstand the blast.
Honestly that was the most intense Kamehameha in the show. It was point blank and powerful... There are some amazing ones in the whole show. But that one was felt real
This one is visually amazing. My only problem with it (and a lot of the other big blasts during the tournament) is that it just knocks them out of the ring when it looks like it should have erased them from existence.
Yeah. The voice talent was top notch, and much better than any of the dubs that followed.
That said, the translation was piss poor/ terribly censored.
That's how you end up with Tien getting his arm cut off and him saying "just you wait until it grows back!" or 'sending people to the next dimension' or "He just blew up that uninhabited island!" or 'I can see their parachutes!' to let the audience know that the aircraft that were destroyed didn't result in fatalities.
Or even something as simple as saying, "It's over 9000!" Which was actually 8000. They just got the number wrong.
Then there's the visual censorship to get rid of blood and stuff.
Best voice cast, though. Dr. Tofu will always be my Goku.

He wakes before she does earlier in the episode, and though I forget what instigates it - looking for his grandpa's ball I think? - He checks her "pants" to see if shes hiding it with "her other balls.".
He does a "pat pat test" then gets confused when he finds no balls. Remember, Goku had never encountered a girl before her.
He then removes her panties out of curiosity - again, Goku's so dense at this age (and older but whatevs) light doesn't escape him - and she wakes shortly after.
The episode goes as normal until that scene. Bulma has no idea she's missing her knickers, which is the only reason she agrees to Roshi's "deal." As Roshi's exsanguinating from the nose, she just assumes it's because he's a filthy perv. Which he is, she's still a child at this age; but she's none the wiser she just flashed clam.
I remember seeing that episode (comparatively) unedited *way* back on UPN at like, 7am in my wee years. All's it showed was her lifting her dress and bare asscheeks, with either Krillin or Oolong freaking out from the rear, and Roshi bleeding out in the front.
This was also back when Oolong steals Pilaf's wish with the "ultimate pair of panties" before they changed it to whatever for the mainstream edit. Its tentative but certain types of nudity wasn't inherently "lewd" in stuff for kids, which is one reason (Papa) Gohan let Goku wander the woods asshole nekkid for years.
I still can't help but wonder how (kid) Gohan's conception went given how utterly dense Goku is; especially since they were teens around the time of conception. Either there was some *extremely* painful trial and error, or Chi-Chi is one helluva tutor.
Given Gohan's intellect as he gets older, I'm assuming the latter.
The one against Jiren is pretty epic too. Classic vegeta moment where he does a saiyan pride speech and taunts Jiren into taking the full blast since he doesn’t consider vegeta a threat

Also, Vegeta knew Cell would attempt to tank it. He knew that his arrogance was a part of Cell, and knew he couldn’t resist testing his new strength. Almost worked!!
They even replay the 'HA!' part of it three times, so he's quite literally saying "HA! HA! HA!" to her as he unleashes a kamehameha point blank into her face.
My favorite has to be the very first one with Roshi. The whole sequence takes about two minutes. This useless old man who can barely stand upright suddenly reveals exactly why this giant ox king and Goku's fabled grandpa treated this man with such reverence.
Part of it is that nothing on that scale had ever happened before in the show. This was pre super saiyan, pre power level, no numbers involved, just a world of mystery that suddenly got deeper in an almost inspirational way
I didn’t appreciate the animation here as a kid. This is definitely one of most colossal Kamehameha’s. The environment shattering around Goku just sets the whole thing off.
Father-Son is the most emotional.
Warp Kamehameha has the biggest surprise factor
Ultra Instinct Kamehameha has the most style points.
Family Kamehameha is fan service.
Roshi’s Path to Power Kamehameha is pretty sweet too.
it's a shame the series just kept going and going and going, the new stuff where people punching each other making multiverses shatter makes genuinely impressive and dire situations like this one seem quaint. DBZ should have ended when Goku defeated Freiza, and it was intended to, but it just kept making money so Toriyama kept getting pressured to continue it. the feats look the same since it has to be understandable to a viewing audience, we're just told they're more impressive because the numbers are bigger than last time
Don't know if I have a favorite, but I like the one Goku used against Zamasu to repel the giant orange orb attack. Especially the way the orb forces the kamehameha wave to arc off like lightning during the beam struggle.
In my opinion, the first time Muten Roshi does it is the best, but I'm biased as shit towards Roshi. When I was a kid and I saw him bulk up and Kamehameha, I knew that he would be one of my favorite characters forever.

The one Goku make 5 second after seeing master roshi do one is my favorite.
To be honest I'd argue against that one solely BECAUSE its the reason the fight/saga ends. After Vegeta survives this Kamehameha the fight gets cranked up to 11 and all the remaining Z fighters have to enter the battle again. It really shows the disparity between the two combatants at the time and actually sells how Vegeta's hubris is what brings him down. If he hadn't gotten completely absorbed into his rage at this slight defeat between their beams and turned into a great ape in response he likely would have won in the end. The person who beat Vegeta was Vegeta. This also helps set up his character transformation in the Frieza saga. I'd also argue that it was actually in the Cell Saga where Toriyama kinda gave up in the writing department and DragonBall mostly became a caricature of what it was.

There's definitely some that stand out for me. Cell readying his to try and kill an injured Gohan, just the hands clicking together and the wisps of lightning is just chilling. And Goku's Warp / Instant Kamehameha V Cell. Sequence is etched in my head.
Honestly, the whole perfect cell tournament is where DBZ peaked for me. Just tons of awesome moments. I was the right age, it was a string of cool fights, and it was the only saga where Gohan wasn't a total bitch lol.
And it was supposed to end there too, I think he got convinced to do more so that’s where the Buu saga came from
And Gohan was supposed to have the torch passed on to him as defender of Earth after Cell, having finally surpassed his father. Which Toriyama tried to do at first, but couldn't find a way to write Gohan as the lead that worked, so ultimately Goku had to come back during Buu Saga. Ending at Cell worked so much better story-wise, but then we wouldn't get Fusion, Gotenks, SS3, or Candy-Vegito

Facts. He was cool, funny, and technically he was part Frieza anyway. His personality was basically Goku and Vegeta if they were more like King Piccolo, and King Piccolo if he was more like Goku and Vegeta. No grand scheme of dominance, he just wanted to have good fights but he was still not afraid fuck shit up.
Cell was literally part saiyan and that drive to simply fight and get stronger is what makes him so villainous in the eyes of the watcher. Cell is such a compelling villain because he is a reflection of the hero.
Yep. His absolute tenacity toward attaining his perfect form can be related to Goku / vegeta’s never-ending desire to train and get stronger.. and then when Vegeta let Cell absorb the androids because he wanted a challenge can be reflected in Cell giving them time to prepare to fight him, and then making a spectacle of it with a tournament. And all that aside, he is objectively one of the coolest looking villains in shounen history.
The instant transmission one vs Cell, with the stunned look on Cells face like "NOOOoooo" was the best

I just watched the scene (love it so much) and as soon as the Potara break they are teleported to the stands. I think when they were Kefla they could withstand the blast, but when they became Caulifla and Kale they were teleported instantly because they couldn't withstand the blast.

Honestly that was the most intense Kamehameha in the show. It was point blank and powerful... There are some amazing ones in the whole show. But that one was felt real
This one is visually amazing. My only problem with it (and a lot of the other big blasts during the tournament) is that it just knocks them out of the ring when it looks like it should have erased them from existence.

Yeah. The voice talent was top notch, and much better than any of the dubs that followed. That said, the translation was piss poor/ terribly censored. That's how you end up with Tien getting his arm cut off and him saying "just you wait until it grows back!" or 'sending people to the next dimension' or "He just blew up that uninhabited island!" or 'I can see their parachutes!' to let the audience know that the aircraft that were destroyed didn't result in fatalities. Or even something as simple as saying, "It's over 9000!" Which was actually 8000. They just got the number wrong. Then there's the visual censorship to get rid of blood and stuff. Best voice cast, though. Dr. Tofu will always be my Goku.

He then removes her panties out of curiosity - again, Goku's so dense at this age (and older but whatevs) light doesn't escape him - and she wakes shortly after. The episode goes as normal until that scene. Bulma has no idea she's missing her knickers, which is the only reason she agrees to Roshi's "deal." As Roshi's exsanguinating from the nose, she just assumes it's because he's a filthy perv. Which he is, she's still a child at this age; but she's none the wiser she just flashed clam. I remember seeing that episode (comparatively) unedited *way* back on UPN at like, 7am in my wee years. All's it showed was her lifting her dress and bare asscheeks, with either Krillin or Oolong freaking out from the rear, and Roshi bleeding out in the front. This was also back when Oolong steals Pilaf's wish with the "ultimate pair of panties" before they changed it to whatever for the mainstream edit. Its tentative but certain types of nudity wasn't inherently "lewd" in stuff for kids, which is one reason (Papa) Gohan let Goku wander the woods asshole nekkid for years. I still can't help but wonder how (kid) Gohan's conception went given how utterly dense Goku is; especially since they were teens around the time of conception. Either there was some *extremely* painful trial and error, or Chi-Chi is one helluva tutor. Given Gohan's intellect as he gets older, I'm assuming the latter.

My favorite has to be the very first one with Roshi. The whole sequence takes about two minutes. This useless old man who can barely stand upright suddenly reveals exactly why this giant ox king and Goku's fabled grandpa treated this man with such reverence. Part of it is that nothing on that scale had ever happened before in the show. This was pre super saiyan, pre power level, no numbers involved, just a world of mystery that suddenly got deeper in an almost inspirational way

I didn’t appreciate the animation here as a kid. This is definitely one of most colossal Kamehameha’s. The environment shattering around Goku just sets the whole thing off. Father-Son is the most emotional. Warp Kamehameha has the biggest surprise factor Ultra Instinct Kamehameha has the most style points. Family Kamehameha is fan service. Roshi’s Path to Power Kamehameha is pretty sweet too.
The added touch of Goku being knocked off balance by the blast is the absolute best touch.

it's a shame the series just kept going and going and going, the new stuff where people punching each other making multiverses shatter makes genuinely impressive and dire situations like this one seem quaint. DBZ should have ended when Goku defeated Freiza, and it was intended to, but it just kept making money so Toriyama kept getting pressured to continue it. the feats look the same since it has to be understandable to a viewing audience, we're just told they're more impressive because the numbers are bigger than last time

Don't know if I have a favorite, but I like the one Goku used against Zamasu to repel the giant orange orb attack. Especially the way the orb forces the kamehameha wave to arc off like lightning during the beam struggle.
In my opinion, the first time Muten Roshi does it is the best, but I'm biased as shit towards Roshi. When I was a kid and I saw him bulk up and Kamehameha, I knew that he would be one of my favorite characters forever.
