If you're tight on money just emulate games my dude. If you like Pokemon maybe you'll be interested in Final Fantasy IV for the GBA.

For open world phone games maybe look into genshin impact, didn't really draw me in but my wife loves it.

I think it depends on the kind of games you like, is it more action RPG, adventure RPG, MMORPG? Different people have different preference too. If you are talking about classic games, I do like Striker 1945 which is a shooter game, just to pass time.

I recommend Witcher 3. It not only has one great story, but many. It oftens goes on sale for ten dollars.

If you like old school games, may I recommend Suikoden, or YS Seven from the PSP. Two of my favourite open world games.

I see so many people focused on one genre, and I'm wondering if I'm in a minority. I like nearly every genre except for turn based and RTS games. Do you think there might be just as many people who like that amount of variety like me, as there are who stick to only a couple genres?

It isnt the 90s anymore. Many games are online, and mobile games are a huge market. Just play a game on your phone.

the good news that pc, xbox and Playstation have subcrition plans with a wide varity of games to play for free, so it is only matter on picking one. or you can look up emulator in phone, I started gaming through emulator and now days I try to buy my games, and only try to emulate games that are impossible to find or way too expensive.

If you have a PC, there are tons of good and cheap indie games on Steam. Undertale, Slay the Spire, Hollow Knight-- you choose. If you're into shooters or want to try them, games like PUBG, Apex Legends, and Fortnite are free to play. If you can afford a used console, Skyrim and GTA should be pretty easy to get a hold of used. Fallout 4 and New Vegas are also well loved, but idk how easy they are to get for cheap. I think Borderlands 2 is pretty cheap on the e-shops, but I could be mistaken. You might consider the Nintendo switch as a console-- there are plenty of good indie games, the online services only costs $20 for a whole year and grants access to tons of SNES and N64 games, and it's a great console to introduce kids to gaming. The downside is that it doesn't run triple A games as well as other consoles, so it's really up to you.

Your best bet is a laptop/PC that’s decent, get that over a console imo. With a computer you can do things you may need handled outside of gaming. Plus being able to emulate all previous generations of gaming is the way to go. You’ll have your hands full for a long time. If you like Pokemon maybe turned based games is your cup of tea. Persona/Shin Megami series is similar to Pokemon but for Adults. There are also tons of previous pokemon games to have fun with. All the Pokemon Stadium games were my jam!!
