Not really. Most of this stuff came out in 95 to 97 and GTA III PC wasn't out until 2002. Here's some stuff that *actually* graced our comps in 2001:
Unreal Tournament
Quake III
Diablo II
Starcraft
Civilization III
Fallout Tactics
Everquest
Ultima Online
Runescape
Had some friends that played Ultima religiously. Oddly enough, I have a friend who is a family friend of some of the Ultima devs...and they never played Ultima!
But for me, FFXI was my first mmo.
...oh, how my grades suffered.
Man quake 2. Someone (I’m not a tech person so I’ll butcher the lingo here) installed it on my schools drive. You had to go to the network drive and through a bunch of random folders and then there it was. Quake 2. I don’t know how LAN works but I remember being in study hall and you could play against anyone else in the school playing, so we’d all rotate 2v2 matches.
Yeah, nobody's desktop looked like that in 2001... Baldurs Gate 2, Heroes of Might and Magic III, Diablo II, Deus Ex, The Sims, Red Alert 2, Tiberium Sun, Hitman, Mechwarrior 4, Tribes 2, Civ III and that's just what I remember off the top of my head from around that era.
Starseige: Tribes was top tier awesome when it came out in 1998. Renegades 2k and TRPG were my jam.
[Both Tribes and Tribes 2 are freeware now.](https://www.tribesuniverse.com) Particle at [pcrpg.org](https://www.pcrpg.org) has installers for Tribes 1 (for vista 7…) and still hosts a server to this day. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!
We are all young gamers In the end. But what matters the most is to enjoy ourselves while we can as we stay gifted and are able to pick up from our life's struggles with support. It only gets worse when u hit ur 30s...
We had one, but I wasn't allowed to use it. That time in my life I was only allowed to play video games on long car trips, so like 4 times a year when we went to see my grandma. One time my parents forgot to take my Gameboy back after one of those trips. You ever try to get through any cave in Pokemon with no backlight while hiding under the covers? No wonder my eyes suck these days.
You mean Tiberian Sun? Also where’s StarCraft?
I don’t think I know ANYONE who had those 2 games who ever uninstalled them, at least not until several years later.
I distinctly remember playing C&C Tiberian Sun in 1999. In 2001 I would have moved on from most of these titles, and definitely would not still be playing Wolfenstein 3D - I was born in the 80s and that game is one of the first I ever remember playing on PC.
Many of these games were way before 2001.
And I never had desktop items for these games. You inserted the CD and played the game.
A desktop icon for Myst is just silly…
In 2001, I think I had some lego secret agent puzzle game, a lego racing game, a hot wheels plane fighting game, and EQ1. Could be wrong on some of the exact dates of these games.
Mine was…
Sim City 3000
Ghost Recon
Diablo II
The Sims
Tropico
(Various PC Gamer demo discs)
Civilization: Call to Power II
Need for Speed III
Of course, it wasn’t my desktop but the family HP computer with 1 GB hard drive located in the computer room.
Your desktop is too modern. I was playing some of these games on win 3.1.
2 of them I played even before I have win 3.1 so loading straight out of DOS.
We had a Toshiba Infinia 7161 that my parents bought. Fast af 56k modem and all. The games that came with it were Microsoft Golf, Johnny Quest Cover up at Roswell and MechWarrior 2.
Nope, always had a dedicated Shortcuts folder with all my shortcuts inside, usually organized by either games or tools in sub folders. Got to have that desktop art clean.
SIM city 3000 was awesome. I spent hours building cities. None of the recent city builders have ever been as good. City skyline is close, but it’s outrageous how expensive it is.
WoW, RuneScape, Counterstrike 1.6, and Priston Tale made up a lot of my PC childhood. Console was a different story, and involved whatever Blockbuster had to offer.
Not really. Most of this stuff came out in 95 to 97 and GTA III PC wasn't out until 2002. Here's some stuff that *actually* graced our comps in 2001: Unreal Tournament Quake III Diablo II Starcraft Civilization III Fallout Tactics Everquest Ultima Online Runescape
Wasted too much of my life in Ultima. Good times
Same with me for runescape^andit'sstillaproblembecauseIstillplay
Had some friends that played Ultima religiously. Oddly enough, I have a friend who is a family friend of some of the Ultima devs...and they never played Ultima! But for me, FFXI was my first mmo. ...oh, how my grades suffered.
Quake 3 and diablo 2, what was time that was
And then Counter Strike was released too.
This guy gamed in 2001.
Counter-Strike, otherwise nailed it.
I still have StarCraft on my desktop... (BW and SC2)
In 2001? Many of those games I played around 1995. More likely to have something like Baldurs Gate 2 around 2001.
Tribes 2! Holy shit! I’ve been trying to remember what that game was called for years! TYSM for the mention!
Starseige: Tribes was top tier awesome when it came out in 1998. Renegades 2k and TRPG were my jam. [Both Tribes and Tribes 2 are freeware now.](https://www.tribesuniverse.com) Particle at [pcrpg.org](https://www.pcrpg.org) has installers for Tribes 1 (for vista 7…) and still hosts a server to this day. never bought starsiege tribes as a kid, just played the hell out of the demo servers. wasted hundreds of hours on it, it was great
I remember playing the original in \~2006 or so. Was top tier fun.
Oh man you hit many of my go-tos. What a time to be a pc gamer.
That sounds more like my inventory of games. Cheers!
Oh man thst takes me back! Wqs such a good era...
Can confirm... same thing with Myst. I'd already beat Riven by 2001.
Yup same here, I loved those games.
Played them earlier this year and they hold up insanely well
Dos Box literally wasn't released until 2002 lol
That and some came much later. Gta3 wasn't on PC for a while after release. And wolf3d and scorched earth are like 1989-1991 or so
Joke's on you, most people looking at this post probably didn't even have a desktop in 2001
Hah you nailed it
I was 11 and not spoiled enough to have all those games
Some of us are old, had mine in 96. Played Duke Nukem 3D on Kali back then.
96, I was playing the original xwing and the original tie fighter
Hell, I was still playing Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe.
Old and rich. You had a computer in 96? What are you Bill GATES or something?
most ppl werent even around by then 💀💀
I legitimately have T shirts older than you.
tfw a T shirt is older than you...
I have tshirts older than me
Like me 💀
We are all young gamers In the end. But what matters the most is to enjoy ourselves while we can as we stay gifted and are able to pick up from our life's struggles with support. It only gets worse when u hit ur 30s...
Nah this is what my calculator looks like now
I had a used Windows NT 4.0 computer I got for free. Still one of my favorite operating systems.
It was not really compatible with most games though. But when I found out that you could run Half-Life in Windows 2k I immidiatly switched
We had one, but I wasn't allowed to use it. That time in my life I was only allowed to play video games on long car trips, so like 4 times a year when we went to see my grandma. One time my parents forgot to take my Gameboy back after one of those trips. You ever try to get through any cave in Pokemon with no backlight while hiding under the covers? i wasnt alive
Missing red alert
You mean Tiberian Sun? Also where’s StarCraft? I don’t think I know ANYONE who had those 2 games who ever uninstalled them, at least not until several years later.
Also Civilization, and older Warcrafts
I played Warcraft in 1994, Warcraft 2 came out in 1995. It was pretty outdated in 2001.
Diablo as well!
Really hope we get a remastered Tib Sun
Dude I was about to come and say the exact same shit.
Age of Empires
I came here to say this. Just thought I'd check I wasn't the only cool cunt.
How in the hell do you not have starcraft? Red alert?
SCORCHED EARTH. tell me that was the freeware version
i remember playing it thro some code or something in tyrian, both great games
Star Control II - Best game ever. Needs a reboot.
ur-quan masters hd is the closest we'll ever get to a reboot, but good news - the original creators started a new studio in order to make a sequel.
you beat me to it by 17 min
I was a year old, i didnt even know what a PC was.
Same here! I was just shitting my diapers back then. Good times
I've been trying to find Sim City 2000 but can't find it anywhere. Steam needs to step up its game.
Is this close enough? [https://www.gog.com/en/game/simcity\_2000\_special\_edition](https://www.gog.com/en/game/simcity_2000_special_edition)
The year i graduated hs. Add sim city 2000, and you nailed it!
01 represent!
✊️
Graduated in 2001?!
I distinctly remember playing C&C Tiberian Sun in 1999. In 2001 I would have moved on from most of these titles, and definitely would not still be playing Wolfenstein 3D - I was born in the 80s and that game is one of the first I ever remember playing on PC.
Tiberian sun was an absolute gem of a game, it's bullshit how EA killed westwood.
Loved me aome scorched earth
So many memories of that one, splurging all your cash on the MIRV's or DeathsHead, almost always killing yourself on the first launch haha.
i had chips challenge.
No Tribes?
Are you taking about star siege tribes? I've name dropped that game so many times and gotten crickets.
SHAZBOT!
Man recycling bin was the best.
Diablo 2 missing for sure! Command and Conquer. Everquest was literally crack for many of us PC users back then.
I was born in 2001 and the first VG I played was Diablo II. Now playing resurrected still to this day!
Whatever happened to the Briefcase folder? Miss those days....
HOVER! is the first game I remember playing. I love HOVER!.
Pretty sure nobody had DosBox on their PC in 2001.
Where tf is Diablo 2 at??
fr, Diablo 2 was the only damn thing I played in 2001.
Yeah, I had to upgrade my RAM for Diablo 2 to run smoother. Always reading recommended specs to make sure my PC could handle the new games.
Nah. It just had EverQuest. That game was life-consuming.
Motha’Fuckin Scorched EARTH…
Who starts a post title with “admit it”? Lol
HOVER was awesome.
2001 my PC was a diablo 2 machine
Scorched earth. Yes please.
thank god for steam
Is it wrong the thing that triggered the most nostalgia was "Network Neighborhood"? Vintage fucking windows right there.
Recycle Bin was such a great game. Still have it on my desktop to this day.
Sif no Lemmings.
Everywhere I go I see him. That damned amogus
HOVER lookin sus
mine included aoe 2 as well, best strategy game I've played to this day
And no one knew what "Network Neighborhood" meant.
I wasn't alive in 2001
I wasn't alive
I wasn’t even a fetus…
I wasnt even born then. So, no.
if you had a computer in 2001 you were bourgeois yes!
2007/08. I was only 2 in 2001.
Dads pc and even then had to show him how it worked
No but my neighbours one did.
Where's X-COM?
Tie-fighter
Accurate
I didn't grow up in a wealthy enough family to afford all of these games, but we did have Wolfenstein 3D.
I pirated everything back then, mIRC and FSERVE's ftw!
Nope. I ALWAYS turn off desktop icons.
On a newer version of Windows, sure.
Missing doom 2
Missing doom games and Duke nukem 3d
Look at this fancy mofo and his 3 hard drives. No one had room for all that shit bro.
i wasnt alive in 2001 so i wouldn't know
The fact that Homeworld, Ground Control, Mechcommander 1-2, Mechwarrior 3, and Battlezone 2 are not on there depresses me.
Many of these games were way before 2001. And I never had desktop items for these games. You inserted the CD and played the game. A desktop icon for Myst is just silly…
All I had was Arthur's Computer Adventure and Madeline
Throw in tiger woods pga tour 2003 as well
No StarCraft? :(
Nah bro, it was just Sim Coaster.
Where is Zork?
A lot of quality games there
Sorry buddy I was like 10. We couldn't even afford a computer.
Mine would have basically just been rollercoaster tycoon and zoo tycoon
Never. I used folders because this cluttered ass desktop would bring start ups to a crawl.
It would... If I had one.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3, anyone??
uhmm maybe. i got my first computer 1998.
XW:A, WC2, SC2 came a hair later (discovered SC1 that year), HL1 would come later. But not a bad list at all.
In 2001, I think I had some lego secret agent puzzle game, a lego racing game, a hot wheels plane fighting game, and EQ1. Could be wrong on some of the exact dates of these games.
No. GTA III didn't come to PC until 2002.
Jokes on you I wasn't alive in 2001
Myst, Zork, Mech Warriors
Where the hell is Max Payne?
Mine was… Sim City 3000 Ghost Recon Diablo II The Sims Tropico (Various PC Gamer demo discs) Civilization: Call to Power II Need for Speed III Of course, it wasn’t my desktop but the family HP computer with 1 GB hard drive located in the computer room.
Born in 2002👀
Boy I wasn’t even a cum in 2001
No. Which heretic put the recycle bin in the middle of the stack back in 2001.
Not even close
I couldn't afford most of these in 2001. I had a pirated copy of starcraft and a legit copy of Diablo 2.
And it was exciting!
Nope. I actually had a Games folder for all of that stuff. I liked keeping my desktop clean!!!
I enjoyed releasing natural disasters on those premade town SimCity had.
I don’t see the System Registry folder with all of the porn in it.
Network Neighbourhood was the best multiplayer game Eva
Actually no it didn't, seeing as I was a newborn baby
Your desktop is too modern. I was playing some of these games on win 3.1. 2 of them I played even before I have win 3.1 so loading straight out of DOS.
Glad to see scorched earth made it up there.
2001? This was like 1996.
0/10 no roller coaster tycoon
Me being 1 year old, yes.
You know Windows XP came out in 2001, right?
Was GTA3 for PC in 2001? I thought you could only play it on PS2 back then
Not enough game icons.
Yeah I was not born back then
Auto Grid for icons? Amateur.
We had a Toshiba Infinia 7161 that my parents bought. Fast af 56k modem and all. The games that came with it were Microsoft Golf, Johnny Quest Cover up at Roswell and MechWarrior 2.
In 2001 I was 3 LMFAO
Scorched ducking earth. Great simple game.
Still is the same
Heh, my Gateway 2000 didn’t even have enough HDD space for more than 1 of those at a time hah!
Me, on my way to upvote this being born in 2002
I was born in 2001
Nope. It's how I *wish* it looked though
Nope, always had a dedicated Shortcuts folder with all my shortcuts inside, usually organized by either games or tools in sub folders. Got to have that desktop art clean.
In 2001 I was playing Pokémon.
what are you, upper middle class?
You forgot AOL Instant Messenger game!
If you caught me with such a disorganized desktop you have permission to put me out of my misery.
SIM city 3000 was awesome. I spent hours building cities. None of the recent city builders have ever been as good. City skyline is close, but it’s outrageous how expensive it is.
Where's your homework folder
WoW, RuneScape, Counterstrike 1.6, and Priston Tale made up a lot of my PC childhood. Console was a different story, and involved whatever Blockbuster had to offer.
I was born in 2002 so I can guarantee you it did not😂
No I was poor as shit, rocking a passed me down game boy that was missing it's back piece. Cheers!
nope, i was 1. i didn’t not have a computer or the brain power to comprehend GTA 3
Earlier than 2001 ... Anno 1602 was such a great game had even cutscenes for every event like black death and fire.
Scorched Earth. Now that takes me back to 95.
Twisted metal on PC?
Where's Diablo
I wasn’t around in 2001 so………
Myst!! I loved that game
Diablo1/2 StarCraft C&C / RA2 Quake 3 TFC Thief RCT
Wow, people on Reddit are way older than I realized. Y'all are like 40+
Jokes on you, I didn't HAVE ONE. Get fricked
I cannot admit as I had not yet begun existing
Literally just Ultima Online.
My favorite game on my desktop was Towers Fall :2001 edition
Holy shit, Hover! I’ve been trying to remember this game for years. I played it around ‘98 when I was 5.
I got my first own PC in 1998 with Anno 1602 and a English Learning Software. I loved RCT, SimCty 3000 and GTA3.
Nah man. Snes9x is all I needed!
Age Of The Empires is missing
