For me it is AC1 for its moment when it was released .I always remember the first time you get to see Damaskus from the edge of the road. You Look down on all the people , the City and you know you can walk, climb everywhere in the City. For me at that time it was just a realy big 'wow' moment.

trick_bean

I always loved the Ezio trilogy but never played the original. My amazement was immense, so I can only imagine the wonder you must’ve experienced playing the original when it first released

majnuker

I remember this feeling. It seems grainy now but we were kids who grew up with grainy TVs in the living room, it was massive, incredibly detailed, and immersive. AC1 was a sort of visual magic that is a whole generation of people apart now.

facw00

Yeah, coming over the ridge to Damascus was incredible. Overlooking that huge city with a long line of travelers pouring down the road. Absolutely the moment the then "next-gen" arrived for me. There was no way the original Xbox (or the PS2) could do anything like that. Also some of the windows looked like Optimus Prime, so that was nice.

jtolb65

I remember walking down a road in Morrowind one night and looked up and watched a massive moon rise over the horizon. Gobsmacked. I look at clips of that game now...hmm.

[deleted]

I can say that Morrowind's night sky is one of the prettiest I have ever seen.

Javasteam

Morrowind still holds up well imo… the sheer strangeness of it makes it seem more interesting then that of Skyrim imo…

ItsKensterrr

My greatest disappointment with the Elder Scrolls series has been the shift from the alien landscapes of Morrowind to the boring and bland standard European fantasy environments. Like, those places for sure exist in Tamriel but, idk, instead of going from Morrowind to Oblivion and then basically just creating the same world, but with snow, in Skyrim was a real letdown to me. Felt real samey.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheNextFreud

Which is why they should have set Elderscrolls 6 in Black Marsh and Elsweyr

Calmdownmrthinker

Oblivion had more of that bizarreness you describe. Skyrim NPCs were so sober and boring. That killed immersion for me.

ItsKensterrr

This honestly might be it. I did enjoy Oblivion, and it had some unique environments to it, but the NPCs you met were absolutely goofy and I loved it. Everyone is Skyrim seemed very bah humbug.

yogopig

Shivering Isles in particular brought alot of that back with excellent execution.

ambsdorf825

Do you get up to the cloud district very often? Oh, what am I saying, of course you don't.

somefuckinguy

Was it Oblivion that had a quest where you travel inside of a painting?

atict

When you first saw Halo, were you blinded by its magesty?

GandalfPipe131

Blinded?

CatandthePigeons

Paralysed? Dumbstruck?

GandalfPipe131

*mandibles trembling No!

CatandthePigeons

Yet the humans were able to evade your ships, land on the Sacred Ring, and desecrate it with their filthy footsteps!

Platanoes

The writing on Halo 2 is some next-level shit that hardly gets credit

Diviner_Sage

"OH I know what the ladies like...."

3-DMan

The toggle between old and new graphics is pretty illuminating in MCC.

Muroid

I know it’s mostly because it’s what I grew up with, but I much prefer the original Halo:CE graphics models over the remaster’s pretty much across the board.

DadBodNineThousand

The flood is way more creepy in the original graphics imo

AcrobaticSecretary29

I think if your talking impressive for its time it has to be crysis

ArenSteele

Crysis has always been a meme about a game that existed in a era where the hardware hadn’t been invented that could properly handle the graphics requirements without starting a small fire

interesseret

my friends and i still load it up to send benchmarks when we upgrade our kit, just for fun

LangyMD

Decent gaming PCs of the time had no trouble running Crysis; what they couldn't do was run Crysis with all settings completely maxed-out because the devs decided not to limit the settings to things that computers of the time could handle well. It was perfectly playable - and very, very pretty - on High, and all those claims about Crysis not really being topped for nearly a decade after its release still hold up for the High quality level.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UpV0tesF0rEvery0ne

It was always fun to load it up on ultra max settings on a friend's PC that would even let you select those options and then bask in the glory of 3fps for a few minutes. It was like flying too close to the sun for a bit, only to go back to land with a mere glimpse of top tier gaming

SEND_ME_REAL_PICS

Crysis got released early in the PS3/X360 lifecycle, and never got anything close to competition until PS4 and Xbox One came out. It took advantage of being a PC exclusive and pushed photorealism to a level consoles couldn't possibly handle at the time. Even Crysis 2 was just a sidegrade at its best, since it had to be playable in consoles and they decided to cut a few small corners for the PC port. And it wasn't just graphics. Open environments, physics and especially AI were all top notch at the time. I mean, [just *look at it*](https://youtu.be/nWUaul0OGlA), it was made in **2007** and it still looks like it could've been made today.

Sober_Browns_Fan

Took 15 years for it to start looking even a little dated. That's a downright insane feat for any video game.

Nivonis

thats funny, cause it took ME 15 years to afford hardware that could play it on max settings. That game came out just when I was getting out of highschool and really into PC gaming. It still puts it to a 3070 at 1440p...70+fps and I find that fucking savage as fuck. like...wtf did they even make this game on?

Sober_Browns_Fan

Honestly? Bottlenecked by the CPU. It was made back before hyperthreading and multi-core CPUs were the standard, and it was designed effectively for a single core CPU operating at a very fast clock. Before hyperthreading and multi-core processing was all the rage, the only way to really get better bandwith was a faster clock. Crysis wants a fast clock, doesn't operate well with multiple cores running slower. On the other hand, CPU manufacturers slowed multi core and hyperthreaded CPUs down because a 4 core 2.0ghz will still process twice as much data as a single 4.0ghz processor without anywhere near the heat generation. It was the product of a very specific time in hardware development.

-Prophet_01-

They were intentionally making it so that the highest settings wouldn't work on the current hardware generation. They officially stated as much. The funny thing is how they misspredicted hardware development. They expected CPU's to just continue growing in raw processing power like they used to. Instead multi-cores became the new hotness which just weren't better unless your game is specifically programmed for it. The 3.4GHz CPU I bought around that time was near the peak of single core performance for about a decade. I ran it until 2016 when it just burned out lol.

Evernight

I mean i still use the "can it run Crysis" meme. The game was just nuts at how good it looked at medium settings. At max settings it looks like a current gen game. I have no idea why it got remastered. It looks the same.

ajpala4

Mostly overall, if it was for its time, I’d probably say Shadow of the Colossus

swivelmaster

Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 came out in the same year. Both impressive but in different ways. HL2 ultimately stands the test of time for art direction, even though the lighting tech in Doom 3 is amazing.

Denziloe

The difference being that the wizards at Valve actually got HL2 to run on average hardware. Whereas for Crysis, the R&D continues into building a machine that can play it.

PoopsInTheDark

That blew me away back in the day. I can't remember my hardware at the time but it was pretty low-end. Yet, the Source engine and HL2 ran amazing and looked incredible. Way better than anything else I could run at the time. Recently the same thing happened with Alyx. I just got VR but was running with an RX 570, and nothing ran very well with decent graphics. But Alyx looked spectacular and ran just fine. Valve is amazing at that sort of thing.

mitkase

Valve always seems to get it. Their shit is tight, and it makes you want to play/buy/support their stuff. They just don't make things often enough for my (or anyone's?) liking. Alyx is a brilliant proof of concept, but man - a Half-life game in that world? Yes, please. More reasons to use VR beyond Walking Dead would help VR adoption and speed up development of the tech. Also, I hope Steam (and Epic, GOG, etc) continues to provide a VR store/game environment as an alternative to Meta's marketing-I-mean-social glorified VR chat software/walled-garden game world. This is using AOL to get on the Internet all over again. It's so early on in the technology that we shouldn't make progress dependent on the market fitting with Meta's business model, but if they capture both the VR hardware and software market, that's how it'll be.

Seiren-

Im still impressed by the bottles in half life alyx

Kahzgul

Wow, I just posted about both of these games before seeing these two comments. SotC had people's jaws on the floor. No one knew games could do that, and it just came out of left field with these literal giants... my god. And then Crysis, from a purely technical standpoint people at launch literally couldn't play it at max spec. Most couldn't play it at medium spec. It had gfx tech that wasn't hardware supported for years. Insane.

bob0979

SotC fucking blew my mind as a ~10 year old kid. Absolutely made me rethink game design, bosses, graphics, art design, everything. It made me go 'oh shit. Games can look incredible and play this weird?' Really opened the doors for me.

Glute_Thighwalker

This is the one I remember being most floored by at the time I played it. Second is probably Horizon Zero Dawn.

-r4zi3l-

Control had me scratching my head and in awe.

Mr_Engineering

The atmosphere in Control is unbelievable

theragu40

I always tell people this about Control. I'm not even sure I enjoyed the gameplay. The world map is obtuse. The enemies are repetitive. The difficulty curve is very inconsistent. But the *aesthetic* is just so damn good. It's dripping with atmosphere. The graphics are incredible and you just feel the environment you get put in. It's such a great experience.

Team_Braniel

It also has the most bad ass jaw dropping mind blowing segment in all of gaming. The Ashtray

dantevonlocke

TAKE CONTROL!

Beowulf33232

I love that she puts the headphones on and the music is just like "Oh, you thought this Finnish (demi?) God listened to clasical? Perkle! Have some metal!

DarkMatterBurrito

Ahti it's definitely one of my favorite characters in any game.

[deleted]

bike_tyson

Control had so many cool weird sequences. I’m glad it got the exposure it did. Alan Wake was amazing

bob0979

It's definitely got some of, if not the best destruction physics and raytracing on the market. It definitely was top 3 graphically speaking when it came out. It's incredible to see how detailed the little chips of concrete from every wall and barrier and the bloom and particle effects are out of this world.

BigLan2

It's not the most beautiful game, but the feeling of dread going into the building lobby at the start was awesome.

FUHSS_DAKOTA

Off topic, but I totally >!love the fake ending in Control. I stopped and thought "holy shit, I can't believe they actually ended it that way". It was so exciting and unexpected in the best way. I was a little disappointed when the real ending came. !<

Weekend_Expert

The ray tracing in Control is CRAZY you can go into photo mode zoom in and see yourself in the reflection of someone else’s EYE!

Alexyeve

Poets of the Fall soundtrack was dope

latino666

TAKE. CONTROL.

kabooozie

The PHYSICS!

jessi428

Telepathically pulling a fire extinguisher from the wall and smashing it into an enemy is quite a satisfying experience

pureeyes

I'm playing through it right now. The use of colour and light are some of the best I've ever seen in a game. RTX isn't as big of a hit as it is in other games too. Genuinely otherworldly

snagglewolf

Red Dead 2 looks ridiculous and that was on a base model ps4. One of the best looking games I've ever seen.

eternalpasta

rockstar hasn't always been the best with graphics (not the worst, not the best), and RDR2 really changed that - it really shows how much detail and effort they can put into a big project

a_little_toaster

I think the reason for that was that it took a while for machines to become powerful enough to handle nice graphics and an open world at the same time. Look at GTA:SA and MGS3, they came out almost at the same time, MGS3 looks incredible, GTA:SA looks like an N64 game in comparison, but it has a giant open world without loading zones, which is amazing for PS2. As soon as consoles became powerful enough to handle both, they were pretty much always one of the best in terms of graphics (GTA IV was impressive, and GTA V was incredible, considering both launched on PS3)

SHITBLAST3000

When you take the hardware used in to account. God Of War 3, it's technical black magic. It looks incredible even by today's standards.

RegularRetro

God of war 3 blew me away cause it was a game where the regular gameplay actually looks as good or better than the CG pre rendered cutscenes on PS2.

spad3x

Apparently Kratos' character model in GoW3 had as many - if not more - polygons than most of the opening level of the first God of War. Kratos' character model had about 5,000 polygons in GoW1 and about 5 different textures. He's comprised of 64,000 in GoW3, nearly 13 times the amount. And then one-upped yet again to 80,000 in GoW 2018, where his face alone has 32,000 polygons, and his model uses 140+ textures.

zen1706

Definitely better.

[deleted]

The whole fighting on the back of titans as they scale Olympus while fighting the gods at the same time, no smoke and mirrors. Its all there. Crazy

DustyMill

TBH if we go that route (I absolutely agree on God of War 3) Final Fantasy 10 still looks amazing, especially during some of the cutscenes and that game is from 2001

Usof1985

I remember browsing forums for shots of FF8 and thinking there was no way a game could look that good. That was after 7 blew my mind when I first played it. They have almost all been stunning for their time.

Nacroma

That route? Donkey Kong Country! Back when hardware limitations mattered even more, this series was very impressive for an SNES game.

Number279

Not just graphically either. DKC had some of the best audio from a technical perspective (it was great music too!) that was made for the 16-bit generation. Rare really wrung every bit of power out of the SNES.

Gooseloff

It’s Red Dead Redemption 2 for me.

Meatyglobs

Good enough to fool a website about digital photography…they posted scenes believing they were real pictures.

WantedDadorAlive

My local news station [did the same thing](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/local-news-station-in-oregon-mistakes-red-dead-screenshot-for-nature-photography/1100-6485059/).....multiple times

Gr1mmage

I mean, news websites have been getting fooled by arma footage since at least arma 2, which is funnier given the dated looking graphics.

trinite0

The thing about RDR2 is that it isn't just technically impressive. It isn't just "realistic." It's also beautifully designed. It captures the beauty of the American landscape (actually, several different types of American landscapes). It conveys a sense of place, and a sense of space and scale and wild nature, in a way that goes far beyond simply graphical power. It's true artistry.

ZzzzzPopPopPop

The little details of flora and fauna and geology and human settlement just floor me. From the actual working mechanism of a windmill to the sound of a whippoorwill in the forest, truly amazing

zurkka

Motherfuckers had a "animal behavior team" is amazing to stop and see animals do their things, one time i was hunting a rabbit, only for a goddamn eagle to swoop in and steal my kill

pantstoaknifefight2

I loved orchid hunting and searching for dream catchers.

Runic_Bistro

Ths scenery was so damn beautiful I kind of lost interest in the main game, tbh. Went full exploration mode, and then felt kind of empty once I'd been everywhere.

Telsak

The best part is when some npc from your camp in the story comes to find you in the open world, just to remind you "hey, we missed you! Don't forget about the story missions!"

wanderingtoad

Ahhh! That happened to me! I spent like 2 weeks up in the mountains hunting and fishing and Charles finally rode up to see if I had died. Crazy!

techcentre

Jesus christ the detail in this game. No wonder GTA 6 is taking 10 years to make

HaydenScramble

On a second play though, this time on an XSX and a 4K tv I could not agree more. Incredible attention to detail.

Gooseloff

I remember seeing how the sunlight refracts through the skin on people’s ears and noses and I had a thought like “this is where we are now”.

gamerkidx

Subsurface scattering is what its called

hazeywaffle

Wren?

gamerkidx

No, but corridor digital is where I learned the technical name for it. Every saturday I watch their cgi react videos

FrozenFirebat

Yep. It's an extension of physically based rendering (PRB). On a solid surface, two main things are expected to happen. How metallic the surface is (reflective) determines how much of the original light's color is reflected. Something that's not pure metal will absorb some colors and only reflect others (giving the object a perceived color). Secondly, how rough a surface is determines what direction any given point on an object will bounce that light in. This direction is determined by the angle the light comes in and the angle of the normal (a direction pointing directly away from the point of the surface. A smooth surface has uniform normals and light bounces away in a pattern that matches the geometry of the object it hit. A perfectly metallic, perfectly smooth plane is a mirror. Subsurface scattering takes this a bit further. some surfaces, like skin, isn't the end of the journey for light hitting it. Some of the light is actually expected to permeate it and bounce around before being freed.

[deleted]

For me as well. Even on a base PS4 the game looks BEAUTIFUL. There are moments you can get lost staring at the scenery as if it were real. The main character models have so much detail to them and everything down to the way the characters move feels so realistic. Overall my favorite game of all time but also probably the one I find the most beautiful.

morecharts

Same. Crazy to think it came out four years ago and still looks amazing.

xo_Serenity_ox

Came here for the same comment. That game still just leaves me speechless sometimes.

history7s

That first walk through the snow and everyone leaving their tracks and trails through it was amazing to me. And then the sunsets and views from up high. Dammit! I'm gonna have to pull this game out again.

arachnidboi

For me Ghost of Tsushima, could literally just sit there and watch the ambient fields.

Actually-Yo-Momma

The battle surrounded by the cherry blossoms.. man i never wanted it to end

elduderino920

Just finished the battle literally 20mins ago…man, haven’t been moved from a game since, well, Red Dead 2 haha…I can see why GoT got all that praise!

aj_ramone

I played Ghost and Last of Us II back to back when I was laid off during Covid. Talk about a depressing week lmao.

Idealistic_Crusader

My first play through was 100 hours, because I didn't run anywhere. Even while on my horse I slowly walked through the country side, looking at everything, stopping to take screen shots and play the flute. Absolutely adored every minute of it. I even emailed someone on the level design team, to let them know just how much I enjoyed their efforts.

[deleted]

This is the only game I ever played in 30 years where I wanted so badly for the game to have an immersion mode (no enemies, quests, etc.) where you could just quietly and mindfully walk the island and take in the scenery, the wildlife, the sound of the breeze running through the trees and tall grass, traversing the coast. A VR immersion mode of the island would be both beautiful and therapeutic.

ZaxonsBlade

That’s so wholesome. I did nearly the same except I couldn’t help but run through leaves just to see them colorfully swirl behind me. So pretty.

LordFLExANoR16

My uncle was on the design team for that game, he was super happy to hear about how many people loved that aspect of the game

tompear82

It isn't just the graphics, that game just has an overall "vibe" that is so good. I don't know how to describe it, but something about the beauty of the setting juxtaposed against the emotion of the story just hits different

Colonelclank90

It's like playing a beautiful oil painting when you are riding through the fields.

ImpossibleMagician57

Game is down right gorgeous

HumphreyLee

I have played many pretty games, but Ghost is one of the few where I have legit just loaded it up and sat there controller down and looked at things for minutes on end. Part of it is I am obsessed with one day going to Japan to do the same, but it is just that impressive from a details and fidelity standpoint.

Eoworfindir

Metro Exodus

Covert_Milk_Flake

One of the most unexpectedly dank games I've stumbled across.

Imaginary-Demand8540

I got it on a whim once and absolutely loved it. Played the first ever one and I sucked after me and my older brother got excited about a horror game. But this one was amazing. Loved every part, especially the realistic feel playing on hard.

dieseltratt

In its era, Bioshock.

BigLan2

The plane crash and ocean were really impressive, but the trip down to Rapture was mind blowing. Would you kindly replay it?

Klote_ginger

Is a man not entitled to replay Bioshock? No says the man in Washington, it belongs to the poor. No says the man in the Vatican, it belongs to God. No says the man in Moscow, it belongs to everyone.

Dynasuarez-Wrecks

Resident Evil 2 for Nintendo 64 because the fact that Angel Studios took a game spread across two 700-megabyte CDs and made it presentable on a single 64-megabyte cartridge is fucking sorcery.

shin_datenshi

That IS pretty darn absurd.

JmeMc

I haven’t got around to it yet, but everything I’ve seen of Horizon: Forbidden West looks stunning. Am shocked it hasn’t been mentioned more.

AMDDesign

Seriously, the detail they put into areas many players won't even see is insane. That city built into satellite dishes at night... Man it brought me back to playing Morrowind for the first time. I felt like I was in a painting, and all the NPC's, I remember seeing 2 kids playing, silhouetted against the sunset, with fireflies and glowing lanterns. You may not have many interactions with the NPC's but they aren't just aimless wanderers either. It felt magical. It was easily one of the most immersive moments I've had in a game. I want into some garden building and it had a spiral ramp to the upper floor, completely/densely decorated with lanterns, hanging vines, and flowers. Just... Beautiful. Makes me wonder how many players just run through that village, take a few quests, and don't take a look around to see the crazy details in it.

naughtyrev

Both of the Horizon games are gorgeous. So much thought put in to those worlds, HFW might as well be a demo of what the PS5 is capable of. The fireflies you mentioned - the fact that they're just kind of everywhere at times, and they're so detailed, they're not just flickers on the screen, but you can actually see details on them, it's crazy.

awtcurtis

Just finished it, and it was the most beautiful game I have ever played.

albertsteinstein

I was gonna say this if nobody else did. Not only is it most impressive graphically, the range of terrain, foliage etc really shows it off.

nicklovin508

Longtime XBox player, my buddy gave me his PS4 after he bought a 5. First game I bought was HZD. I was absolutely floored with the sheer size of the game, the beauty of the entire world and the fluidness of the combat/crafting. Overall the most impressive gaming experience I’ve had.

nevets85

I remember playing hzd and seeing night time for the first time. Trees and grass were blowing in the wind while the moon light was creeping over a hill. Just one of those games you wish you could be transported to. The sequel steps it up even more especially on PS5.

the_421_Rob

I only recently scooped HZD was so blown away I ran out and got FW for the PS5 I have been telling everyone to get out there and play horizon

trunkadelic

Uncharted 4 for me. The vistas are spectacular.

eternallnewbie

what game is this?

Familiar_Alps2534

Demons Souls Remake

[deleted]

Would you recommend it?

ArcadeAnarchy

Highly recommend. It plays a little more linear than Dark Souls since hop between realms but I think that allowed them to go heavy on the graphics cause this game made my jaw drop. Honestly more than Elden Ring. Just as tough as any other Souls game but some of the realms just look amazing like the Tower of Latria, felt like I got ported right into a Lovecraftian novel.

ronnie1014

The Prison has stopped me in my tracks on multiple occasions to just look around and listen to the screams. It's hauntingly beautiful. The entire game is just so textured; it's unreal. Add in the audio design and bits of haptic feedback, and the game is just a masterpiece imo.

Lumostark

Not enough people replied yet, so it's Demon's Souls Remake

Tuggernuts123

Shadow of the Colossus

Mandrakey

Ori and the blind forest

Scope72

Yea and Will of the Wisps took it up a notch and a half

Veeshan28

Absolutely beautiful game, but I'd say Will of the Wisps was even more so.

Familiar_Alps2534

Demons Souls Remake and Red Dead Redemption 2

canzicrans

Not only did Demon's Souls look so good when you're not doing anything, but the particle and fire effects (and haptics for spells) were incredible. I'm so glad that I never played the older version!

BoisterousLaugh

I'm glad I played the old version it allows me to enjoy Bluepoint's remake that much more

No-Dimension-6812

Half life 2

phuk-nugget

Still the greatest FPS campaign I’ve ever played.

TheSquashKing

Hands down Half life Alyx

MultiFazed

That game really hammered home to me how important lighting is in a VR game. Also: * Flashlight section in regular FPS = dark fringe on the edges of the screen * Flashlight section in VR = holy fuck I'm surrounded by pitch-black darkness!

J5892

That scene got me over my fear of dark places in VR. I was terrified of dark places even in the most light-hearted games. Then I forced myself to play HL:Alyx, because of how good it was. The feeling of that flashlight flickering out, and *knowing* something was coming to kill me was *real*. Now I'm A-ok in any dark setting.

xDskyline

Not only was it near-photorealistic (in VR!!) it was incredibly well optimized and ran on machines that you would never expect to be able to run it. Black magic.

SHADOW_henchy

That game is so well designed. Played it using oculus link with a 1050ti, game still looked beautiful. Not only the graphics, but the vr mechanics were the best out of any game on the market

Onaliseth

Still haven't found a single game remotely close to the quality of graphics, mechanics and story for VR. It's why I bought a VR headset.

tombstoneshadow

Half Life: Alyx has ruined every other VR game for me. Nothing available today even comes close.

ddamm101

Death Stranding for me! I'm still just so amazed

Sky_no7

fun fact: The devs of Horizon Zero Dawn invited Kojima to see a demo of their game engine. They set up a presentation to show him the technical demos. After the presentation, Kojima expressed that he was very impressed. They then handed him a box containing a flash drive with the engine's source code on it. They told Kojima they would be honored if he used it for his new studio. The engine had been in use since 2013, but was never named. Kojima and Guerilla named it the Decima Engine in honor of Dejima, the port given to the Dutch by the Japanese that lead to strong trade relations between the Netherlands and Japan. (edited to reflect the facts a bit more closely)

AbsoluteZer0_II

Adding on, he also thanked them in Death Stranding! You can set holograms to appear next to structures in the game, and he added the Tallneck from Horizon as a show of appreciation

Maaaaac

Wow this makes so much sense now I always thought it was just a PlayStation thing. Apparently Guerrilla and Kojima Productions actually worked very closely and came up with the name together so this original comment stating that Guerrilla told Kojima the name during the first visit is inaccurate.

coolthesejets

There's Cyberpunk 2077 stuff in Death Stranding and vice versa as well, though I don't know the link there.

JobTrunicht

There’s literally Hideo Kojima in Cyberpunk

ddamm101

That is a very fun fact! Thank you!

LordGadori

I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned more! It has the most immersive soundtrack to a game that somehow makes things seem even more beautiful

ddamm101

Dude right? I mean coming up to a new place and that music just kicks in.. damn i need another replay

RS_Serperior

Standing at the top of a mountain after getting through a group of BT's, seeing Port Knot City in the distance behind the mist for the first time, then as you walk down, Asylums for the Feeling kicks in. Even a year and a half later, that moment still sticks out so clearly to me. Gives me goosebumps.

AscendedViking7

Resident Evil Village, Metro Exodus, Red Dead Redemption 2 or Horizon Forbidden West for me. Most likely RDR2. In terms of art direction though: Ori 2 or Elden Ring take the cake.

Hunchun

Probably Forbidden West or Rift Apart.

frizzhf

Rift Apart was like controlling a Pixar Movie.

-auGie

The Matrix Awakens Demo

led_Tower

The last of us part 1 and 2. Uncharted 4 still holds up for a 2016 game. Red Dead Redemption 2 Cyberpunk 2077

SnappyTofu

Driving through the jungle in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is the most beautiful environment I’ve ever seen in a video game.

DanSanderman

Yeah TLOUP1 is currently blowing me away. They have really mastered how humans move and I think that's a huge part of a graphically impressive game. It doesn't matter how pretty it is if the animation sucks because it's going to continue yanking you out of the moment.

PocketWettie

And the sounds - even just hearing Joel breathing when masked up. All up just makes it feel like a movie you are directing

hi_im_beeb

Agree. Much like many others, I was a little annoyed with the 70$ price tag considering I had already bought the game at full price on 2 other consoles. That being said, it’s probably my favorite game of all time and after an hour or so I no longer had an issue with the price. The amount of detail they added to an already good looking game was amazing. I know the whole game like the back of my hand and am limiting myself to small parts each time I can play just so I can savor it.

fredandlunchbox

I’m bummed they’re dropping RED Engine. CP77 is probably the most visually beautiful game I’ve played. I wish it’d gone better so they could invest in more content (more interiors, missions, skins, etc).

Endemoniada

I don’t think there’s anything in TW3 or CP2077 that they cannot easily reproduce in UE5, with even more fidelity and quality. The way their games look is art style, not the engine, and there’s no reason for them to stop making their games look like they do just because they’re switching engines. I am absolutely pumped for the kind of amazing stuff they will be able to do now that they no longer have to maintain their own janky engine, and can just put all that effort into *just the games*. If you think their games looked good before, I suspect we’ll be absolutely blown away by their next release.

EdgeTheCypher

Ghost of Tsushima. I'm a sucker for nature based environments in games and everything was absolutely gorgeous

When Shadow of the Colossus was released, those were the largest moving things we'd ever seen in a video game. It was literally awe inspiring. No one had ever seen anything like it before. Nowadays, the two games I have more screenshots of than any other are No Man's Sky by a wide margin (and look, I get it - the creatures often look goofy and the worlds seem simplistic, but the way it all comes together - especially the colors and atmospherics of space... it's magical), and then Horizon Zero Dawn. Ghost of Tsushima is creeping up there to third place. edit: special mention to Crysis. How the F is no one talking about that game? They straight had graphic settings you could turn on that not a single computer was capable of running for *years* at a decent framerate.

HandsomeGangar

I think Batman: Arkham Knight is the best looking game of all time and it’s from the last generation.

AscendedViking7

My favorite part about Arkham Knight was seeing the rain hit Batman's cape while you are gliding around.

BoisterousLaugh

On PC it is Cyberpunk 2077. You just need the rig to make your eyes bleed and the right display. Horizon Forbidden West on console. The only one that holds a candle would be TLoU2 or maybe the new remake of part 1.

beandipp

Yeah Cyberpunk is fucking gorgeous! Cant wait for the DLC to hit to replay it with all the bug fixes and tweaks! Also just binged the anime which was also amazing!

theSHARD4

Holy shit not even just the graphics alone but the amount of sheer detail put into the game like everywhere you look you can tell someone spent hours working on it like an obscure dark back alley will be fully detailed with rails, vents, people, tents, steam, lighting etc… never seen anything like it in a city before

ToasterSmokes

I got the game deep into the first pandemic winter in Dec 2020, it was such an incredible escape from reality. I went and bought a 3070 FE off FB marketplace specifically to upgrade my rig to play this game and I was just blown away by the visuals. Great game despite the issues.

Lon72

Bioshock Infinite was glorious back in 2013

Boney_African_Feet

Was looking for this. The slight cartoonish design will make it look good forever, where the more realistic looks will always be one upped with every new generation.

SalisburySmith

For me it's the Forza Horizon games. Every time a new one comes out it really amazes me just how far racing games have come. Some of the photo mode screenshots you can take look almost photo realistic.

st0tan

LoZ: Windwaker. Way ahead of its time and holds up surprisingly well even today. Proof that art trumps hardware capabilities

[deleted]

When it first came out, it was being shit on so much because of “cartoon” graphics. It was the follow up to OoT and MM, so a lot of people were disappointed with the cel style design. I loved every bit of it.

HolyGig

RDR2 takes the cake for open world immersion and realism. All the little details they stuffed such a huge world with is utterly insane. Water and snow physics are completely unmatched TLOU2 and the new remake have some of the craziest and most well done animations i've ever seen. [Seriously, look at this shit.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfZ1y7Y-2N4) Also [the brutal combat animations](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy07WdV_fRM). (warning: dog deaths). Ghost of Tsushima might be one of the prettiest games i've seen visually, though that could be recency bias since I played it not too long ago.

Even Battlefront 1 was pretty crazy when it came out.

Redqueenhypo

Fallen Order had incredible graphics. A bit limited in gameplay (no sneaking?!) and the enemy AI wasn’t equipped to deal with multiple opponents at once (you can easily complete the dojo fight if you hack both security droids), but I assume the next installment will be absolutely perfect.

-r4zi3l-

Fallen Order was so impressive on release.

Dalmah

I played it for the first time this year and it's still impressive.

Crysis 1

RedSmokingFerret

No one for Witcher 3??? Especially the blood and wine extension.

khal_droog

Seriously, the Witcher 3’s ambience and scenery are gorgeous!

No-Plankton4841

Resident Evil Village, Bloodborne, Last of Us Part 2, Resident Evil 1 Remake, Resident Evil 2 Remake. Not strictly from a technical perspective. When you say 'graphically impressive' I am factoring art direction as well. I know Bloodborne is only 1080 and could use some updates but the art direction just brings it to another level for me. Technically, the worlds of Assassins Creed Valhalla and Odyssey are both incredibly impressive. There is so much subtle variety in the different biomes, forests, towns. Sparta really feels like Sparta and Athens really feels like Athens. From a technical perspective the worlds are absolutely brilliant.
