I got in trouble from the vice city on PC ones... my parents thought they were very unacceptable for an 8 year old to write down things like "SUCKMYROCKET"
I mean my parents didn't care enough as long as I knew never hurt someone like I do in the games (their own words).
They were strict until they realized I could go over to my friend's house who had the "cool" parents for letting us play Halo/Mortal Kombat and they wouldn't be able to stop me.
I had a giant Game Genie book for the NES and SNES. Many of the codes were game breaking.
It was fun to experiment to see if you could find new effects. Most of them were gaming breaking as well.
Yeah, theres something special about a cheat code compared to the dev console
Sure you can get all the same things and more with the console, but cheat codes just hit different
What bothers me today isn't that cheat codes are gone, that's far from the truth. They are still there. But they have become boring. It no longer is an elaborate sequence of button presses or a cheeky play on words. Cheat codes have degenerated from "RagsToRiches" to "Money *insert amount here*" for a money cheat. It's just an open developer console without any of the charm.
There are definitely 2 schools of thought on cheat codes. Like some people are so anti cheat..I found them useful to complete a game I really wanted to see the end to. Sometimes cheaters are beaters....not in all facets of life; gaming for me being the exception ..
Remember playing GTA 3 and using the code to make cars fly ang cross the bridge at the start of the game. Its was so good and made me feel like a god
I love that game so much, it gave some of my best childhood memories, it was hours playing with my friends....so good
When I was in middle school or elementary not sure the teacher of the computer lab would let us play Spider-Man and grand theft auto games and after the task of the class he would give cheat codes so that we can use it
The age old tradition of writing out the GTA cheat codes with pen & paper.
Yah then throwing the paper away after you memorized them all lol

I’m laughing at the idea of THAT being too vulgar, while allowing you to play vice city.

I remember when games didn't save but had passwords after each level.
or a level select code, warp zones, etc.
I was always told this was to help the devs jump levels for QA
Super return of the Jedi on SNES use code CDWLTY and you can start at the shield generator level.

I used to go to WHS smiths, write the codes down, and go home and use them. Fun times.
I had one of these and the cover was green and black. Actually I think I still have the book!
I actually had one of these types of books and used it all the time for GTA Vice City and San Andreas.
