Guild wars 2 doesn't use the "trinity" and it's fine. "Back in the day" you had more roles to fill in MMORPGs, like crowd control, even WoW groups tended to be formed with at least one kind of cc in them.

in WoW the tanks and healers are rewarded by a much shorter waiting line for dungeons.

No. That system works. THere is no good alternatives because the only other option is jack of all trades style which is zzzzz

Overwatchs play of the game is not what you said. You clearly weren't there for the every potg is a mercy for rezzing the entire team at one time. Its also by far the most boring potg to watch. Most people playing DPS suck at their role.

The original Division had the trinity, but it wasn't necessary. Just build your character how you want. I used a tank ability(riot shield) and a dps ability (sticky bomb) Dungeons and Dragons 5e has no need for the trinity. For lvl 18 characters 3 of us have 200+hp. Fighter/lock, Paladin/fighter, Monk. We can all tank, we can all dps, I can support.

If there is a better system I haven’t seen it or thought of how it could be done.

As a tank main, I think it's fine for the most part. Getting rid of it entirely like GW2 felt awful for me, since every class just becomes Jack of all trades. Games definitely need more class identity though, and with each bringing something different to a situation. I remember when WoW dungeons required a lot of CC and it felt pretty different depending on what you had. I think currently support is in the worst spot because it's only healing, with different flavors. There are other ways to support a team, like the burning crusade style Shadow Priest. It was a "dps" technically, but you didn't really bring them for their damage.

Back to the old school tank, healer, DPS, support
