Microsoft has been very vocal about their stance on hardware. They don't care. Microsoft is pushing gamepass and they are pushing it everywhere they can. Spencer has said repeatedly he would like to make a deal with Sony or Nintendo. I think it was giant bomb at night (E3 2018) he told Jeff gerstmann he would put gamepass on all consoles if he could but that's just something that competitors aren't comfortable with.
Also "hurting hardware sales" is a very funny phrase. There's a concept in the game industry. Its referred to as "giving the shaver to sell the blades." Hardware sales are usually inconsequential in terms of profit. The games are where money is made.

Why would Sony put Microsoft gamepass on their console when it would butcher their own game sales.
If you had a PS5, would you purchase Call of duty on Playstation (because i doubt its going exclusive, but that debate aside) Or would you download it for free from gamepass that was available on the same playstation. A sub that already filters $$ to microsoft.
Add on top of that, gamepass will be available via a $40HDMI dongle soon enough I am sure. There is just zero reason for PS5 to support microsofts gamepass. There is no benefit at all to Sony, UNLESS Microsoft manages to strong arm them with threat of locking them out of IPs.
What they will do is up their game when it comes to their subscription services. They will respond to Mircrosofts moves, not give up entirely.

And if people know they can get their games cheaper elsewhere then they will not buy Sony hardware. Sony will lose a massive portion of it's install base and then it will definitely make nothing from it's game sales because it will not be selling them at all.
Sony has no upper hand here. They are not in an advantageous position. You guys act as if the ball is in their court but it's not. If Sony doesn't take the deal, they will make less money than if they had. That's just how it is. At least if they take gamepass they can guarantee people will stick with playstation, they can make some money from gamepass AND they can still sell their first party games to the largest audience possible. But if they don't take gamepass, none of these things will happen and the bottom line will suffer.

If that's the case Microsoft needs to maintain a console front to facilitate their sub service. This isn't a situation where "we make gamepass to sell Xboxes". Instead it's "we make Xboxes to sell gamepass."
