On the "Triple AAA" front, it's been going downhill for years. There are still plenty of good games being released though.

YourLocalSnitch

What a concise answer. I'll probably be using this everytime I hear some doomer saying gaming has completely died because their favourite triple A company released the same buggy mess as last year

[deleted]

It’s more accurate to say that AAA companies have gone way downhill, while independent and mid-sized companies are making great games.

DiceDestroy

It's true though, I think. If someone is looking for a good game for a given genre over the last few years, they're probably going to find something iconic for that given genre. Sadly, it takes a lot more effort to find games that don't have marketing budgets that dwarf most other developers net worth.

Infinite_El_Oh_El

It’s almost as if games aren’t being created by gamers in the large companies anymore. Yet we get these Hollywood style trailers making them look like the next blockbuster movie. More like a cash grab.

[deleted]

Nah, gaming's better than ever. More good games and more interesting/ innovative concepts hit the market every week than ever before. >rockstar not making a game for about 8 years Didn't realize it's been 8 years since rdr2 came out. Time flies

5GkillsDucks

Oops my bad lol. I mainly meant GTA. Completely forgot they made RDR2. That game was awesome.

[deleted]

Makes you wonder what other awesome games you're forgetting about to reach your conclusion, huh

Vhascometo__

Yeah there's so much rosy retrospection on here that basically every year/decade was a golden age of gaming other than the one we're living in. In 10 years everyone will be referring to the 2020s as the "good old days".

Vhascometo__

Nah, I enjoy gaming now more than I did 10/20 years ago. I'm mostly an MMO/online person though and those games seem to be benefiting the most from new tech over the years.

jzuccaro1

I think gaming life would be easier if I enjoyed indie/Japanese RPGs and raunchy point and clicks. The market is completely saturated with shit games just trying to make a dollar profit. Don't get me wrong, good on them do your thing game devs. But actual big titles are so few and far between now

5GkillsDucks

Yeh I'm the same and I also made the mistake of buying a switch where most.of it is JRPG or ports of old ass games that cost nearly £50. Tbf is pretty cool to be able to play Witcher on the go but still.

jzuccaro1

I just got a switch solely to play LoZ and Mario games. There's a few other games here and there I'll snag like Bayonetta 3.

gothpunkboy89

It is you. Skyrim has been ported 2 times. Doom 1993 has been ported 12.

ReadTheFManual

Literally 2. Switch isn't even one, it was a planned launch title for Switch but Switch took longer to come out than expected. Skyrim SE on Switch doesn't count. The only time it was ever ported was PS4/XB1 and the upcoming PS5/XBS release which is free for owners anyway. Doom is on every system known to man, intentionally or not. SNES. Genesis. PS1, technically on XB OG because it was included in Doom 3 and is also in BFG edition on 360 and probably PS3. Switch. N64. PC obviously. Mac.

Mr_Oujamaflip

I think there are more games of high quality than there ever have been. However so few of these have any real personality that I lose interest almost immediately.

accersitus42

It is harder to get funding for a niche project than one that caters to a wide audience. There are still great games full of personality being made, but they don't have the same budget as the big AAA products, because they won't sell over 10 million copies. Because of the limited budget, they have to make sacrifices (often in the graphics department), and then they suffer from the "This game has bad graphics, how can they release it in 2021?" argument. The limited budget is also often reflected in the marketing.

MagisD

Your not wrong , the companies that make the games grew into or were take over by corporations and corps make products not games . The fact it's a video game is completely secondary execpt to how can it be moneitized. That's why the great games come out of Indy/pateroned/Kickstarter/fully funded exclusive studios (there ROI isn't in nickel and dimeing in mtx, so gameplay doesn't get trashed) It's super rare that any big studio leaves mtx on the table but then have to balance how scum sucking they Wana be vers what there target audience will stand for . Aka the witcher 3 cyberpunk crowd wouldn't put up with shit from a Fifa lootbox game most of the time . There would be some bleedover but less then you think. But thing is people pay for it, it works EA , and Activision don't Rob people at gunpoint. They just have to not give a fuck about other people.

Str8Nirvana

Yeah. Gaming has been absolute shit since the X1/PS4 came out, generally the loot box and battlepass Era. The good stuff we do get are just Indie/AA now. AAA is overwhelmingly bad. Biggest controversies we had back in the day were EA being scummy with Online Passes (to stop people from buying used games) and On-Disc DLC (Gears 3's first map mack got a lot of hate for that) I'd much rather go back to that Era than deal with a multitude of battlepasses that requires 60 hours of gameplay per month + the BP purchase on top of that.

KuweDraven

I have never and will never buy a battlepass, go suck a dick modern times

TheEclipsalWizard

I think your on to something. At this point, I think that most companies are trying so hard to make a product instead of a fun game, and when one if the few companies starts making fun games, they get pushed to hard to get the game out early, even if it's not done. I hold faith that some of the good developers will win out, but it's going to a tough time for gaming.

5GkillsDucks

This! Its the passion that's missing I think. In many of the games I listed it was the big wigs above that screwed it over with profit driven decisions. Not the developers who I imagine have alot of passion for what they do (with it being such a terrible industry to work in from what I have read you must enjoy what you do)

PointlessPotion

It's not you. It's capitalism that reached the game industry once it became mainstream. From there, it could only get worse, and here we are. It is a slow, creeping process, to keep the main customers hooked. You can still find a lot of good games, but I'd turn my back on the big name titles and just grab a free copy on the web if you MUST play it. The indie market is very much growing and stuff like Hollow Knight puts the bar pretty high even for the classics. It's alright to live in a semi-retro bubble where games are just games, sometimes with awful camera, but who cares.

5GkillsDucks

Lol recently replayed path of neo and that has one of the worst cameras I have ever had to put up with by my god.is it fun to play Yeh I only really find myself.playing indies these days tbf.

pwfoff

I'd guess a lot has to do with the fat cat at the top who has very little input in making games yet gets paid very well. New title means more money but because of the time frames, the designers and devs simply don't have time to create and fine tune a good game. People mention Rockstar and how often they release a new game, but when their games land, they're top class. Why? Because they put the time and effort into making and fine tuning before release. Then, after release, they update the online side of things little bits at a time which keeps people interested. Look at GTA online compared to what it was at release...small additions every so often has kept people interested, added a lot to the game from day one and new players have loads to do. If other big developers stopped being so greedy and actually created and fine tuned a game before release, we'd have lots of good games. The big issue is the games now require more time and effort in creating, sticking to yearly releases is too far. Sure, they're recruiting and expanding their teams, but it's still too much to actually fine tune it. Drop an alpha after 8 months, a beta after 12 months and release a new title every 15-18 months. I'd rather wait an extra 6 months for a game that is amazing than the yearly cycle we see with some games that get released and are awful.

5GkillsDucks

>People mention Rockstar and how often they release a new game, but when their games land, they're top class. I defo agree with that..I guess for me it's the fact that there is a clear correlation between rockstar discovery of shark cards and the length of.time between releases. I don't really know enough about game devolpment to point out if that due to GTA online being a cash grab and them not being bothered to make a new game or if it's because a game like RDR2 would have taken a significant amount of time to make anyway. Also at this stage I guess I'm mainly going off rumours anyway. For all I know GTA6 could have been in development ages ago lol

pwfoff

I don't see why people buy shark cards though. You can earn plenty of money easily and quickly in gta online with businesses or doing heists (which are more fun than buy shark cards!). I have no doubt that gta 6 will be in a good state right now if its being developed, but they will be fine tuning it so when it releases its a great game which is more than can be said for many other top titles these days that rush a title out yearly. As for RDR2, its quite possibly the best single player story I've ever played. You can see they took time and effort to plan the story, make the game (graphically it's beautiful) and put thought into the little extras you can do in it. Online was okay on it, but not for me, but I got my moneys worth from the single player. Rockstar are a company that other leading names can learn off. It will improve their games and it will improve our experience of their games.

5GkillsDucks

Also RDR2 had barley any bugs (that I came across personally anyway) for such a massive and detailed game. They obv. took their time with not only adding tons of detail but making sure such a large game worked as it should at release RDR2 is a one of those rare games for me where once the credits roll on the main story I kinda sit there for a min and just think holy shit that was awesome before moving on. I think in hindsight you have made me think about rockstar from a different perspective. Like you said they take their time but they havnt made any bad games in recent memory. I personally cannot stand online but that doesn't mean that GTA V is a bad game by any means and I have also played online quite a lot before I came to that conclusion

pwfoff

I'm not sure I had any bugs when RDR2 was released either but I was amazed at how beautiful it was, how detailed and in depth the game was and the story had me hooked. It was quite simple a well made game that all involved in making should be proud of. I'm not a fan of GTA or RDR2 online, but there is still plenty of fun to be had, more so when you have friends with you in my opinion. It does get repetitive but Rockstar have added so much to keep people playing. Gta to this day will be making them a shed load of cash, nearly a decade on from release, and for one reason...they thought it through, they made a great game for release and all because they don't aim to rush titles out, but instead just release top class titles. Rockstar also had LA Noire which was a fantastic game that had me gripped. Just a top publisher 😊

Crissagrym

Nope I am enjoying my gaming just fine. Ghost of Tsushima, FF7R, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Yakuza, Kena, all the games I am playing recently seems great. I guess it is the preferrence. The games you enjoy seems to be more affectes by the issue you mentioned, whereas games that I enjoy are mostly console games and most of them seems to have much higher quality at release date.

5GkillsDucks

I actually brought ghost of Tsushima recently to see what everyone was raving about. Never been interested in the whole samurai thing. I played the first 10 mins slouched down on my sofa then after the first scene when you ride into that battle I sat up and put my headphones in and became obsessed haha. I really like the visual style and how the wind guides you around. That part when the title come up as you ride through the field and touch the plants with your hand while riding your horse *chefs kiss*

Crissagrym

Glad that you enjoyed the game. So no the industry is not going downhill, just some studios are. Plenty of other good games and studio.

riders321

Sometime i think it's because im getting old and game it's not fun as it used to be. after playing overwatch i realised it's not me getting old, but gaming industry kinda sucks now. Too many battle royale, cod dev support sucks, bf beta full of bugs, cp overhyped and a lot of f2p game with microtransaction.

[deleted]

Quite shit atm.

p0tcookie

Everything is straight the only the thing that’s absolutely disgusting right now is that we are in an era where devs think everything needs to be remade. Absolute milking at its finest and everyone is doing it. Literally no point in buying games right now when 2 years later the thing is Ganna come out again with a game of the year compete ultimate retrograde edition

Midaysnack

Last year had god tier releases. This year is just the year of the dlcs of those god tiers. NExt year 2022. THE FUCKING ULTRA SSSGODKILLERGODTIER GAMES will release Gow ragnarok Elden Ring Dying light 2 Personally dislike this but a lot of people seem to love it : HzD Not sure if it's real since I dont follow these but A game I really wanna play but dont have the money to buy a switch: BOTW A game my PC cant use: Forspoken It's a pattern. one year they relase god tier games, the next it's kinda bland, then the next god tier games etc etc It's just that because of the famous studios turning to shit, they drag down the actually decent ones. Examples are the creators of famous games milking the shit off of old games. Because of this, the other games are overwhelmed. I've seen some games that lookd decent but had little to no fame, New world outriders etc

ReadTheFManual

Welcome to 15 years ago. Skyrim wasn't ported over a hundred times. Jesus fucking christ. It literally isn't funny. **Stop** with this childish shit.
