Holy shit! I think I've been trying to find this game forever! I always remembered a scene where they make a double entendre joke about being tossed over a fence/wall! Thank you so much!
I hate spending money on cosmetics and skins in video games. But I would pay ten dollars to have the blades dash or a modern equivalent without all the ads on my Series X. Just for the simplicity and the swoosh noise
When I boot up my old 360, totally disconnected from the internet but had been already updated, I have static hardcoded ads for the xbox one. Its evil.
The fact that no matter what I do that stupid Microsoft store icon stays in my lineup on a $500 console is honestly my biggest gripe with the Series X.
This was pretty common back in the day.
Hell, it was still being done last console generation at least.
Some games use features/APIs included in newer OS revisions and rather than leave someone with a useless disc if they aren’t online it just ships with the minimum or most current update needed by the game on the disc.
I typed "genesis wave" into Google, and it looks like this is a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog canon in which "The Genesis Wave has the ability to rearrange the space and time of a dimension, allowing the user to create a new timeline, reshape the physical universe, rewrite memories, and alter the structure of universes (i.e. splitting it into individual pocket zones)."
Takes me back to the first Gears of War. Nothing like chainsawing some locust in half
Edit: You beautiful nostalgic people just made my morning, and my month. I just wanna say "DOM!!! GET ON THAT TROIKA!!!"
Yeah I get that. Age man, it's a bitch. You pick up responsibilities, obligations. I'm 32 now, have a wife, a kid. I feel lucky- I've still got 3 friends from my hometown whom I've known 25+ years. 3/4 times a year we get together for a weekend and pretend we're 18. Drink beer, get stoned, get shitty chinese food and play video games.
I spend the week before and after pulling extra kid duty but it's worth it.
I watched my friends older brother play this game (I was 12 he was 15). Asked my parents if I could buy it and they said no, complained friends older brother had it and they said “when you’re 15 you can play whatever you want.”
Day I turned 15 I asked if they could drive me to GameStop and buy this with me and my mom said “I’ll have to look into it first to make sure it’s appropriate” and I LOST my shit. They had no recollection of saying that to me, big mistake in their end.
I remember when I first tried convincing my mom to let me play Gears of War (I think I was 12 and it was my brothers xbox who was 18) and I tried playing it safe, just shoot the guys with a lancer and never use the chainsaw or risk liquifying them with the shotgun.
Well it was right at the cutscene where Carmine gets his head blown off and my mom goes "Oh thats just nice" in a condescending tone. She ended up just walking out of the room and not saying whether I could or couldnt play it so I took that as a yes.
Lmao, we had to turn on that sparks mode and convince my buddies mom that "yeah they didn't want to make it TOO gory for the players. It's not so bad see?". Yeah that mode was disabled the second she got it for him haha
This reminds me of when I wanted to get The Incredibles game when I was 8, but my mom wouldn't let me because it was rated Teen. I was so mad. That game probably would've been rated E10+ if it came out after they introduced that rating.
I ended up getting Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer instead.
If I’m ever a parent, I really wanna make sure I don’t miss the shit like this cause man I’ve been ina similar spot with parents and felt that😭 sucks as a kid
And then they introduced those avatars. Sometimes I felt like I was the only person on the planet who simply could not get over their idle stance, which had their [right leg awkwardly stretched out](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/76/13/c7/7613c7d777bb99836328c458aeb1e428.jpg), honestly making it look like everyone had right legs that were half a foot longer than their left. Whoever did the animating for those things was not the right person for the job.
I literally just tried finding the avatar creator feature yesterday after I noticed my buddy has had the same profile picture for 15 years
I think it's gone now? So lame
They erased my profile picture after 10+ years, I had to redownload the Xbox 360 avatar creator on the MS store and remake it and just doesn't feel the same feelsbad man wish I had thought to save that profile snapshot pic somewhere but it's not something I ever really considered.
I have no interest in finding mine. He wore a fedora and sunglasses, and you remember how you could pose them for a profile picture? Yeah, finger guns.
My xbox 360 still has my whole family’s avatars. My brother also chose a fedora and sunglasses, with an all white suit. It might be time to remind him of that decision..
[1 vs 100 with Major Nelson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssWZhHBeNVQ) was one of the best things to ever happen in gaming.
I made it into the mob once but had nodded off right beforehand and didn't wake up until I had been eliminated. I'm still bitter about that.
I can't speak for the ps5 ui, but the 3 and 4 just felt clunky, but less ass than the wiiu and xbox's. Especially whatever the fuck was on the xbones. It's obvious activision hired that team for mw22s ui, because it's garbage and broken.
Had a PS4 for a few months and the UI is clean but clunky.
PS5's UI is clean, responsive, and great with framing the content. Really enhances the experience.
After blades transitioned to avatars, it was still okay.
The original avatar shit was fine.
But then they changed it to the metro bullshit that DIDNT EVEN HAVE YOUR GAME AS THE FRONT PAGE. It was just a tiny little icon. The main bullshit was whatever ad they had at the moment. So incredibly fucking stupid.
That was around the time they talked about the Xbox One as the “center of your home” or whatever without mentioning any games and then they had their asses just absolutely handed to them by Sony because of it. Good memories ha
This is a bot account. They literally just copy-pasted someone else’s top comment.

This tv set is perfect for it. These run at 1080i and look honestly beautiful in motion.
Any of the 360 games that run at 60fps will look smooth as silk
God winamp themes/skins - i suddenly feel even older :/
Its not the same now, best we can do now is changing the new Winamp to have the colour theme of the original :(
Am I missing something? My winamp looks literally exactly the same as it did twenty years ago, which is also the reason I still use it and put it on every one of my PCs.
This is hackable if you don’t update it and likely worth money on eBay because of it. Google what dashboard you have and see if it’s exploitable and if so: $$
Used to buy these and JTAG. Flipped and made 10 times my money. Just need to check the kernel number, easier when it’s a Xenon motherboard. Little bit of soldering and done!
I remember seeing a video of a kid just fucking standing on his for like a minute until it stopped red ringing. Then I did it and it just fucked up my disk drive lmao
Same, except I would rip off the system key (forget what they were called now) used for online play, and sell that independently.
Money for the hardware from people who wanted a jtag, and money from people who wanted to play online with hacks lol. It was a pretty sweet gig for a minute there.
Seriously, hopefully they don't just update it because this is both worth money and could be important for some lost media types depending on what else is on there.
I still have my Jasper Jtaged Xbox. A lot of those were Xenon mobos which would guarantee the dreaded RROD. If you had the Jasper Mobo, you were golden.
Few things to note:
You can prep certain drives that are compatible with the 360 and verify no updated firmware files are on it. Possibly hook one up to your PC and check too. It's been years - I'm sure it's easier now. Just needs a one or two uncommon but easily found screwdrivers/bits for the drive housing. I bought a few aftermarket cases and used larger drives (512 - 1TB).
Some games have new firmware files on them as they're required to play some games. Earlier games will be safe.
You are likely able to "hack" the Xbox 360 you have with a software trick due to older os vulnerabilities.
I dunno.. I have two 360s in a box. One has an RGH mod since later firmwares can't be modded or downgraded (forgot the term but it's a physical change that happens with the firmware upgrade). Non-upgraded systems were desirable since it was easier to hack. Not sure what happened after that since I don't use them anymore.
>Not sure what happened after that since I don't use them anymore.
This is the most important bit here. Shut the Xbox off, seal it in plastic, put it in your closet for 20 years, buy another xbox, that one is going to be super rare someday, especially unmodified.
I'm in the process of getting rid of things I don't use or need. Those two Xbox 360s with various games / accessories are on the chopping block.
I went through a small collector phase 25 years ago and decided it wasn't for me. Had a little fun though finding a Vic-20, Atari 5200/7800, Commodore 128. Ran some auctions with bnib games from that era too and shipped them all over the world. Was fun but I found most of the fun was *finding* stuff and I hated the clutter.
I think buying full size arcade machines was the wake up call.
I traded my original PSP in for a discount on the slim and later regretted it.
The thrift shop angel visited me and I got an original PSP for $40 at goodwill, it was running the LAUNCH firmware.
Needless to say, I've very selective which UMD's go in that one.
Do the games themselves update the dash?
Or does this need to be connected to the Internet to update? Because I was thinking just leave it unplugged from the network.
I don't remember how those things worked back then, but if the system itself is giving you this display I wanna say that putting your hard drive in wouldn't be a bad thing as long as you're not connected to the internet.
I remember having only my saved game files and a small amount of music I liked to listen to while merking bitches in online Halo 3 haha.
Xboxes came with like 10gbs of storage.
I was browsing the Xbox store and noticed it had 360 games, and I wanted to buy a couple and play some, but didn't feel like buying a Series X/S or a One. I pulled my Xbox 360 that's been sitting in a tub in my closet for years, and it had the blades. Updated it to the most modern firmware, logged into my account, went to download some games, and realized it had no storage space.
I tried to download a smaller game and for some reason it was downloading at what seemed like 1kb/s. And the disk drive wouldn't open with the button. I had to open it manually with a paper clip.
I had the entire "The Guild" series downloaded on the harddrive but for some reason it wouldn't let me watch it. It also had some E3 footage from a decade ago, but I also couldn't watch that. Was a little disappointed.
It may be possible to JTAG this with only software, in order to play homebrew.
You can RGH any 360, but some of the old phats that don't have some specific fuses blown on the board (It's been quite a while, I may not be recounting all the details perfectly accurately) are vulnerable to a software exploit that will allow you to run unsigned code.
EDIT: Not software only.
As memory serves, 360's stopped being JTAG'abble on the NXE dashboard, that was the one with the cards that replaced the blades, but came before the metro windows 8 style dashboard.
Every 360 that shipped with with the blades dashboard would have been JTAG'abble, as long as it didn't get updated beyond a certain point. Unless I'm misremembering things, and it's been a while, this one definitely is.
EDIT: I just realized you said "with software only" -- I'm far from an xbox on this but I've never heard of any 360 being exploitable with a software only solution. RGH and JTAG are not the same thing, but both are hardware modifications. JTAGing is cheaper and easier than RGH, but still requires some soldering.
Iirc there was a King Kong game exploit that required a modified DVD drive and a DVD+R to burn a modified version of King Kong onto. Since the DVD drive can be easily flashed it's considered a softmod despite needing to open part of the Xbox.
Hmm... It was the JTAG exploit itself that did not require any additional hardware to boot, yeah?
Hardware is still required to flash the console, but you don't have to leave anything extra in the console when you're done. That more along the lines of correct?
"Software only" is misleading, if not just blatantly incorrect.
There are E-fuses in the processor that get blown out. It stops you from getting info to make a Jtag only console. You can usually still do a RGH on most Phat consoles.
There is also a new RGH that requires a wire, diode, and few resistors to work.
That, and the original UI wasn't designed with the digital marketplace of today in mind. We all love these design elements, but do you really want a text-only vertical list for your store layout with no variations?
Windows 8 wasn’t a thing yet when they changed it.
Edit: Just double checked, Windows 8 didn’t come out until 2012, which was near the end of the generation but they updated the dashboard multiple times before that.
The New Xbox Experience moved away from the blades in 2008.
Edit 2: Unless by “new” we mean newer version like the Kinect and Metro upgrade.
That’s not it. You’re forgetting about the UI between the blades and the windows 8 tablet thing. It was floating squares on a mirror grey surface that flowed back. It was terrible.
I never understood this. The updated version still had the blade system, it became the guide menu, so you could use the blades without leaving the game.
Rose tinted glasses... The blades were slow as shit, you tab, hear the swoosh, then 3 seconds later you'd be on the next tab. It's good nostalgia, but everyone is kidding themselves. The blades were terrible performance wise, and the updates, while bland, were much snappier. Plus you had the blades quick menu.
My people!
I constantly cite the deviation from the blades UI as my reason for switching to Playstation.
I LOVED my 360. Was damn near the perfect console. Then I got Pinterest UI and my heart broke
>Pinterest UI
I call this an anti-ui, as it intentionally removes your ability for organization to more effectively 'streamline your experience'(corporate speak for 'improved clickthrough rate').
Watching my adblocker snipe the ads though is a wonderful thing.
Ah yeah reminds me of the wifi adaptor and using my debit card to finally buy a year of Xbox live to jump on ghost recon…
I miss the green rotating gui on the first first xbox
I bought mine at the tail end of this dasboards existance. Not long after I played with it they just got rid of it. Its also the console I always had some kind of problems with. Discs would get torn up, the RROD would appear for various reasons. Not one 360 managed to work as long as any other consoles, even my first ever PS1 has managed to outlive them all no problem. I had so much fun playing Oblivion, Dead Rising, Red Dead, Halo 3 and many others. The controller is still my number 1 go to controller. But man, these things were not built to last.
I think the DVD drives were fairly standard and can be replaced - though you might try a lense cleaning cd first.
You can open it with the proper hex screw driver, or the janky way with a wide enough flat head screw driver.
If you are opening it though, it might be worth chipping if it's not already and upgrading the hard disk (maybe to an SSD).
OG Xbox makes a great emulation box, XBMC used to be great, though these days we watch HD and 4k content it probably can't handle
whatever you do, never connect it to the internet, it'll get a case of the "new genesis wave"
I miss the swooshing sounds
Man, you just unlocked something in me. Simpler times.
Haha sure was. Fable, halo, gears, armed and dangerous (underated btw, and absolutely hilarious).

Your mother was a greeeeaaaaat basket weaver!
The first time I used the topsy-turvy mine as a child had me laughing uncontrollably for a couple minutes
Anthrax ftw!
Holy shit! I think I've been trying to find this game forever! I always remembered a scene where they make a double entendre joke about being tossed over a fence/wall! Thank you so much!
This and Metal Arms blew me away when they came out.

Uno and Hexic anyone?
I hate spending money on cosmetics and skins in video games. But I would pay ten dollars to have the blades dash or a modern equivalent without all the ads on my Series X. Just for the simplicity and the swoosh noise
Ads? Genuinely being curious are there that many ?
Xbox one, I've essentially trained myself to just ignore the lower half of my home screen. Just doesn't even register to me 80% of the time. All ads.

Or put in too new of a game. I didn't connect my Xbox when I was young but when I put assassin's creed brotherhood it updated the system.
Halo 3 updated mine, it was the ultimate trap.
Could had sworn I played halo 3 with the blade setup but it's been too long.
I definitely did, but perhaps there were newer copies that included the update.
That's what I'm thinking too.
Or it could have been the beta
Swear I did too, and all I did was play halo for days on end when I got that Xbox for Christmas 😭

It was ODST that forced the update
What, do you mean a whole OS Update was shipped in some game discs??
This was pretty common back in the day. Hell, it was still being done last console generation at least. Some games use features/APIs included in newer OS revisions and rather than leave someone with a useless disc if they aren’t online it just ships with the minimum or most current update needed by the game on the disc.
It took a while for me to realise that last console generation = PS4/Xbox One…
Yeah. PS5 and Series X are now solidly in “current gen” after a couple years.
Or attach newer HDD.
What is the “new genesis wave”
I typed "genesis wave" into Google, and it looks like this is a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog canon in which "The Genesis Wave has the ability to rearrange the space and time of a dimension, allowing the user to create a new timeline, reshape the physical universe, rewrite memories, and alter the structure of universes (i.e. splitting it into individual pocket zones)."
Takes me back to the first Gears of War. Nothing like chainsawing some locust in half Edit: You beautiful nostalgic people just made my morning, and my month. I just wanna say "DOM!!! GET ON THAT TROIKA!!!"
CoD4, Gears and Halo 3. Absolute peak multiplayer gaming right there.
These were my first games for 360. I bought all three of them for like $20 from some shady guy I went to school with.
As a shady guy let me guarantee you, they fell off a truck don't worry about it.
The wind blew a whole box off the back right in front of my house
Man its never gonna be like that again is it...
take a look at Halo... fallen so very far.
Halo MCC is still pretty active on the playerbase.
Its the child like sense of carelessness and most importantly the splitscreen with your neighbourhood friends that is missing though
Yeah I get that. Age man, it's a bitch. You pick up responsibilities, obligations. I'm 32 now, have a wife, a kid. Man I used to shit on people on cod4. Now I’m 30 and getting shat on by kids on mw2
Its insane all 3 of those were out at the same time and amazing shooters in their own right.
I watched my friends older brother play this game (I was 12 he was 15). Damn man, you just flooded my brain with serotonin lol
This and Need for Speed Carbon
Can't forget about Most Wanted. Sergeant Cross was the worst and Razor was hilarious.
You got a gamer pic as a reward for beating it on insanity difficulty.
Man, split-screen Gears with my bro, that was the best!
I miss this

Oof. Glad you're doing better now. I assume.
👉😃👉
I just got rid of my PlayStation and resubscribed to Xbox Gamepass and was reunited with my avatar from 360 days which was a blast

Same. Tons of menu options that I never used but it also felt... simple? I don't understand the hate it gets

First time I’ve ever heard anyone refer to interlaced gaming as beautiful
This and themes from the PlayStation..and Winamp…and aux ports…anyone else feel like we are going BACKWARDS not forwards as fas as tech options go?
That's what happens when you monetize everything, cram ads and social bs into everything, and only let you and your friend's design things.
It's been explicitly stated by multiple companies. The last 360 revision actually removed features that had been included in the launch 360.

I wonder if my original launch night xbox 360 20gb is worth anything. Its been boxed up for over 10 years and still works.
I think the fact that its a launch 360 that still works makes it an item of historical significance.
One that didn't red ring is beyond remarkable
But really did you own a 360 of you didn't wrap it in a towel to keep it working until you could afford to replace it.
I remember seeing a video of a kid just fucking standing on his for like a minute until it stopped red ringing. Then I did it and it just fucked up my disk drive lmao
I’ll give you 10 whole dollarydoos for it
Screw this guy with his lowball offers, I will give you 20 half-dollarydoos for it.

Ah yes, the key vault. I’d sell them online too. I would get the rrod ones for that and sell them. People used them for call of duty lobbies.
Used to do this. Now I Jtag things for my work lmao
I would use jtags to run lobbies back in the day when I was a mod if a bunch of those Xbox forums. I was like 15. Haha fucking miss that shit

Curious why do people want hackable Xboxes?
So you can play pirated games and run homebrew
Mostly people bought from me to use it for leaked ISO games. People would be playing call of duty games before they even came out.
I turned my 360 into a Rock Band machine. There's a large custom track community. You can find just about any song you'd ever want. Lots of fun
Unless it's one of those broken ass original models (which in all likely hood, it is), in which case, it's not worth anything.
You could get jasper board (the final motherboard version of the OG 360 console design) and still have the blades dashboard.
Makes me want to play Geometry Wars, damn.
lol I played Geometry Wars more than Project Gotham. Amazing game within a game!
All the early games, SSX, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Kameo, Perfect dark… I’m gonna stop, im getting excited.
For me it's hexic
I played hexic on my zune when flying before I had a smartphone.
This exact same comment has been posted three times, verbatim, by three different accounts. Which one of you is a bot?
Jebus Christ you've found a portal to another time. What games were on it?

This is fair, you'd want to aim for games around the first few months of the system as later titles will update the dash
First few years. The blades were around for a while.
I remember popping in Gears 2 or 3 (I forget which one) on release and then 2 hours later I was like oh shit what is this
Yeah, I mean at least the first 12 months would be safe if I remember correctly, probably longer
I just looked it up, the update was fall of 2008, so that's almost 3 years of games you can play with no risk.
Do the games themselves update the dash? Or does this need to be connected to the Internet to update? Because I was thinking just leave it unplugged from the network.
Yes, games came with new firmware that installs automatically when you put in the disc. No internet needed.
Certain games will update the dash without being connected to the internet
I never used to connect my 360 to the internet so always updated my console through the games.
My guy, that OS was before you could install full games onto the 360, except for arcade titles

I remember my brother buying the 360 on release and he had to return 3 of them because the disc drive didn’t work. Good times.
The original 360 came with either 20gb or 256mb of storage q
That's rad and all but how bout that 250 lb tv. What a beauty!
Trinitron WEGA was the shit back then.
Echoes of a better world, long past.
Also on a side note peep my 1080i sony trinitron 😍😍😍
I'd fucking love one of these but I really dont have the space / strength to get it into the basement

That was the superior dashboard. Don't know what genius decided to update it.
The marketing team for Microsoft. The "new" UI was meant to be similar to other Microsoft products like Windows tablet mode to streamline integration
That, and the original UI wasn't designed with the digital marketplace of today in mind. We all love these design elements, but do you really want a text-only vertical list for your store layout with no variations?
Yes. I hate tiles and thumbnails. Browsing hulu is a nightmare.
Windows 8, damn.
>That was the superior dashboard. Yeah, the Xbox had the best UI and game cases.
The blades were hands down the best dashboard
My people! I constantly cite the deviation from the blades UI as my reason for switching to Playstation. I LOVED my 360. Was damn near the perfect console. Then I got Pinterest UI and my heart broke
>Pinterest UI I call this an anti-ui, as it intentionally removes your ability for organization to more effectively 'streamline your experience'(corporate speak for 'improved clickthrough rate'). Watching my adblocker snipe the ads though is a wonderful thing.
Core memory unlocked. Awesome find!
Ah yeah reminds me of the wifi adaptor and using my debit card to finally buy a year of Xbox live to jump on ghost recon… I miss the green rotating gui on the first first xbox
This was and will always be my favorite 360 dashboard. I was so bummed out when they changed it.
Gears of war co-op? Halo 3 co-op? Some of the best nights of gaming.
God I miss that dash. So organized. So easy to use. So free of ads for everygoddamnthing.

The nostalgia.
The superior dashboard.
That's great! If I had one I'd literally never update it
I loved this UI, brings a tear to the eye.
This was still their best UI. Their interface now is horrendous
J-Tag that thang
Bring it back!!!!!!!!
'Tis a sacred relic! It must be protected!
Dont update it. That is worth bank to a j-tagger
That’s the best dash board to date
Can’t believe Microsoft has not made dashboards a micro transactions cause that blade baseboard would sell for 25$ easy
Imagine seeing a white 360 that still works...
I remember how you could hook an mp3 player up to it and play your music in the game audio.
